Sixty-Two

Sorry I know I was supposed to update all last month, twice a day, but between my busy life and work I got sick as ever and pretty much slept for a few weeks straight!

But I'm here now with an update and possibly a couple more tonight!

**

Mike walks down the basement stairs to find Mitch sitting in the middle of the floor rolling a red ball into the other room and laughing.

"You wanna play? Come out. I won't hurt you."Mitch says whoever is in the room in front of him.

Mike watches his son and is puzzled since he can't see who the hell Mitch is talking to.

"Who are you talking to?" Mike asks startling Mitch.

Mitch quickly turns around. "No one."

Mike brushes it off and walks back upstairs telling Mitch to follow him.

"Come on. We have things to discuss." He says.

"A discussion? Oh shit." Mitch says following his dad.

Mike walks to his office and closes the door behind Mitch and tell him to sit down in the chair in front of his desk.

"I just got off the phone with your principal. Mitch, you haven't been in school for two weeks! What is going on?" Mike asks.

"I don't like it. It's boring and they bull me." Mitch says flat out.

"What does that mean?"

"That is so you! Some kids say they're bullied and their parents pull them right out. You ask me to define bullying."

"Have you told your mom about this?"

Mitch chuckles.

"How is it that a big, fancy shrink hasn't noticed that his wife has completely lost her shit?" Mitch asks.

Mike shakes his head as he is confused at Mitch's question.

Mitch sighs and breaks eye contact with his father.

"Mitch, look at me. Look at me!"

He finally looks back at his father with a stern look on his face as he's over this bullshit discussion.

"What's been going on with her?" Mike asks.

"Well, when she's not in bed or worrying about absolutely everything, she's eating raw brains! Maybe she thinks the twins are stealing hers because that's kind of how is seems." Mitch explains.

Mike's eyes widen and he moves closer to Mitch trying to collect his thoughts.

"Well, it sounds like, um, your mom is depressed, and you're feeling very alone and isolated." Mike says.

"This isn't about me! I'm saying mom's crazy and it's your fault! You drove her crazy! You're a cheater! Young girls, old ladies with feather dusters!? You're so weird and pathetic. I'm surprised you haven't gone after me."

Mike sighs and points to Mitch sternly.

"I'm still your father! Don't talk to me like that!"

"I don't have anything more to say anyway. Sessions over."

Mitch then gets up from his chair and walks out of Mike's office quickly.

"Mitch. Mitch!"

Nel sits at the kitchen counter crying and looking around the room until Angelica walks in to take the tea off the stove.

She quickly wipes her face and tries to calm herself down.

"Madam, are you alright?" Angelica asks.

Nel nods her head as she tries not to look at Angelica with her puffy red eyes.

"It's my own fault. I...I read labels on everything. And then, when it really counted, I just...I just followed directions blindly. My doctor gave me a prescription last week for a drug for nausea, and...I just checked it on the internet, and it says that it can cause fever and seizures and, um, vision changes. That's the only explanation." Nel explains.

Angelica is relieved Nel doesn't believe it's ghosts anymore.

At the same time though she looks at Nel as if she has lost her mind, but it willing to see what else she has to say.

"For what, madam?"

"For all the crazy stuff that's been happening. My doctor never even told me about the side effects." Nel says.

Angelica pours Nel a cup of tea and puts the tea bag into her cup as she listens to her problems.

She wishes that Nel would just see that the house is actually evil and haunted, but it seems like the place and the people in it are getting to her and making her crazy.

"Doctors are charlatans." Angelica says.

Nel shakes her head and stares at the cup of tea.

"My mind is playing tricks on me, Angelica. I'm literally seeing things." Nel whispers.

She nods her head and tries to fight back tears.

Angelica doesn't know how to help Nel out, but knows she has to get to the bottom of it.

"There, there, madam. You just need a good cry. Sometimes it's the best possible thing." Angelica says putting a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"Everyone thinks I'm crazy. I know Mike does. I know it. And I've been too embarrassed to call Todrick."

"That's what men do. They make you think they're crazy so they can have their fun. Haven't you read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman?" Angelica asks.

Nel shakes her head no.

"Her husband, a doctor, locks her away in the upstairs bedroom to recuperate from a slight hysterical tendency. Staring at the yellow wallpaper day after day, she begins to hallucinate that there is a woman trapped in the pattern. Half mad, she scrapes off the wallpaper to set the woman free. When her husband finally unlocks the door, he finds her circling the room, touching the wallpaper, whispering 'I finally got out of here.'" Angelica explains.

Nel nods her head as she understands how the woman in the book felt.

"Since the beginning of time, men find excuses to lock women away. They make up diseases, like hysteria. Do you know where that word comes from?"

Nel shakes her head no again.

Angelica pauses before telling her.

"The Greek word for uterus. In the second century, they thought it was caused by sexual deprivation, and the only possible cure was hysterical paroxysm. Doctors would sexually assault women in their office and call it medicine." Angelica explains.

Nel shakes her head in disbelief.

"I had no idea." Nel says.

"It was over a hundred years ago, but we're no better off today. Men are still inventing ways to drive women over the edge."

She sits at the counter looking at her tea as Angelica keeps talking and starting to realize how true it all is.

Men are still driving women over the edge for no reason.

"Look at you and Mr. Grassi. Cheating on you and leaving you here, pregnant with twins, alone, to care for your truant teenage son. Any woman would lose her mind." Angelica continues.

There is a small pause between the two women before Angelica asks to speak up again.

"May I speak freely, Mrs. Grassi?"

"Yes."

"You are not crazy. And the strange things you are experiencing, I'm afraid it's not the drugs. I've never said this to any of my employers, for fear of losing their trust or my job, but this house is possessed."

Angelica goes on about all the things that go on in the house and it's all starting to make sense in Nel's mind now.

"Things break, disappear."

"Doors open for no reason."

"There are spirits here. Malevolent spirits."

"Mrs. Grassi, please hear me. You need to get out while you still can. I fear for you if you don't."
