Forty-Four

"She wanted to be a pretty girl." Connie says as tears fall down her face.

Mitch just sits there silent as he's trying to come to terms that Nicole is now dead.

"Of course, she didn't look so pretty lying on that table, under those harsh, energy-efficient lights. One of the many comforts of having children is knowing one's youth has not fled, but merely been passed down to a new generation. They say when a parent dies, a child feels his own mortality. But when a child dies, it's immortality that a parent loses." She continues.

Mitch just looks at Connie with every word she says and can't but feel sorry for her lose.

Connie might have been mean to Nicole at times, but she loved her daughter with all her heart and now the only thing she loved in this life is gone.

"Connie, I'm so sorry." Mitch says.

"Well, you did encourage her. That's true. But you were just trying to be kind, weren't you?" Connie says.

Mitch just sighs and nods his head.

"I was the one who sent her out into the world tonight. And it did what it will do. Go ahead, drink yo- drink your tea, honey." Connie says.

Connie fixes herself some more tea while Mitch just looks at her still in shock.

"Can I have one of those?" Mitch ask as he watches Connie light a cigarette.

"Oh, a cigarette? Oh, certainly." Connie says handing over her pack of cigarettes.

Mitch takes one along with the ashtray to take some of the sadness away.

She sighs. "Just don't let your mama know that I am encouraging your vices."

Then Connie sticks out her lighter to light it for Mitch as in the moment she sees Mitch as her own child.

He just looks at her and nods his head as he keeps this their little secret.

Connie chuckles as she watches Mitch take a hit off of the cigarette.

"You know, Nicole was a willful child. I suppose if she inherited anything from me, it was that. In truth, I think my little monster was more like me than any of my other children."

"I didn't know you had other children."

Connie pauses for a minute then sighs.

"Scott is my son." She says.

"What?" Mitch asks surprised.

"He cannot know about this, Mitch. He cannot know that his sister has passed. Not now. He doesn't react well to certain things. So you- You have to promise me." Connie explains.

Mitch is shocked at the fact Scott is her son and that he has to keep Nicole's death a secret from him.

She then takes Mitch by the arm and looks in his eyes.

"I don't understand." Mitch says.

"Well, he's a sensitive boy. You've seen that. He's a young man with too deep feelings, the soul of a poet, but none of the grit or steel that acts as a bulwark against this...these horrors of this world." Connie explains as she walks over to the cabinet.

Mitch just sits there silent and lets Connie talk.

"The steel that has protected me, that Nicole possessed. And that...you have, too." She continues.

She picks up a picture of Scott and Nicole and looks at it with tear falling onto it.

"I, uh...I think...that's why he's taken so with you. He craves your strength. Look." Connie says walking towards Mitch with the picture.

He just stares at her and then to the picture she hands him.

"Maybe he misses his sister. But we must protect him, Mitch."

Scott runs down the small sand hill back to the beach out of breath.

The group of teenagers are still close to him as the follow him down the sand hill to the beach.

"I used to run track." Scott groans.

"We know." Cameron sasses.

"Is somebody going to explain this to me?" Scott asks.

"Do you believe in God?" Trisha asks.

"Is that what this is about? You guys are with the Campus Crusade." Scott says.

Trisha forcefully pushes Scott into the garbage can behind him causing him to stumble backwards.

"You asked me if I believed in God and you put a gun to my head. I said yes. It wasn't even true, and I said yes. And then, you pulled the trigger." Trisha explains with tears forming in her eyes.

Scott just stares at her not knowing whether or not to believe what she's saying.

"What is this? Is this part of a Halloween act? Because, I mean, the makeup, it's chilling, but the performance-"

Jeremy grabs him and kicks him in the stomach causing him to fall to the ground.

"No more bullshit, Scott! You owe us an explanation!" Jeremy yells.

"Why are you doing this to me? What do you-"

Jeremy kicks him again shutting him up.

"Why did you target the jocks? I never did anything to you!" Jeremy yells.

"It wasn't just the jocks, man. I mean, look at me. Look at Matt. Did you ever once go to a football game?" Romeo says walking towards Matt.

Matt shakes his head.

"This guy was honor roll. He could've been valedictorian. Asshole!" Romeo yells as he punches Scott in the face.

"Now I'm not gonna change the world, okay? But he could have! He could have been something and you ruined all that potential." Romeo says.

Scott finally works up enough strength to stand up and sit down on the bench in from of the group.

"We want to know why. You owe us that." Cameron says.

"Way more than that." Trisha says.

"You got the wrong guy, okay?" Scott says crying.

"No. Don't you dare! We have been looking for you for years!" Cameron says starting to cry.

Scott just looks at them as they all gang up around him.

"He's screwing with us."

"Maybe he's in denial."

"Maybe he's psychotic."

As the kids keep talking, Scott, begins to have flashes of the dreams that have been playing in his head.

But now he's not sure if they are really dreams, but repressed memories.

"Get out! Get out of my head!" Scott screams hitting his head with his hands.

"We aren't in your head. We are right here." Cameron says getting up in his face.

Then Jeremy pulls her away from Scott. " Come on, Cameron. The sun's coming up."

"Please just say it. Just say what you did." Cameron says with tears rolling down her face.

Scott and Cameron both look at each other with tears in their eyes while everyone else is trying to leave before the sun comes up.

They all look at Scott for an answer, but he doesn't give them one.

"I should be thirty-four years old. And married, with babies." Cameron says.

"I don't know you. I'm sorry. I don't know you." Scott says.

They all look at him and realize they will never get the answers out of him.

"Come on. We gotta go." Trisha says.

As the group walks away, Romeo turns around and flashes Scott the middle figure as he walks away.

Scott sits on the bench by himself crying and groaning from the pain he feels in his stomach.

Angelica, Shawn, Alex, Esther, Avi, Stephanie, Maria, and Stella walk back to the Murder House as the sun comes up to return to their eternity there haunting the halls.

"How was your night?" Shawn asks Angelica.

"My mother's dead." She says.

"I'm sorry." Shawn says.

"I couldn't go with her."

"No."

Shawn walks past Alex as he walks up the front stairs of the house.

"I am not speaking to you." Shawn says.

"I'm sorry, baby. I can't help myself." Alex says.

They all walk through the front gate and sigh as they see the house.

"I feel like I'm doomed for all of eternity, to be trapped in an unhappy, adulterous relationship, working on this goddamn house, which will never be just the way I want it." Shawn explains.

"You are." Angelica says.

"We all are."

Todrick drives Isabel from the house to the jail and file a report on her after what happened tonight.

"So what is it with you girls? Young, everything to live for, but you throw it all away on some guy you can't even have." Todrick says.

Isabel turns her head towards Todrick and tries to explain herself.

"I did have him. We were in love. He was just too guilty to leave her." Isabel says turning back to look out the window.

"A lovely woman like Mrs. Grassi. Pretending that you nuked her dog. That's evil. Just plain evil. You don't do things like that out of love. What'd you out in there anyways?" Todrick asks.

Isabel sighs and keep her eyes aimed out the window.

"Tomatoes. It was a joke. A stupid Halloween prank."

"I see."

"Oh, you don't see anything. He was the love of my life. What's gonna happen now?"

"You're going to jail."

As Todrick pulls into the police station parking lot, he greets a fellow officer and goes to take Isabel out of the backseat, but quickly notices something.

She's gone.

As Nel requested, Mike is packing up some stuff and going to a hotel until further notice.

Mike walks over to his nightstand to grab his watch and notices the broken family picture on the ground.

He cleans the broken glass off of it and just stares at the smiling face in the picture wishing they can still have those happy times as a family.

Nel sits in the kitchen with a warm cup of coffee waiting for him to leave.

He walks in the kitchen to say his goodbyes to his wife even though she can't stand to look at him.

He walks towards her and kisses her forehead and sighs before walking out of the kitchen to the front door.

"I'm sorry, Nel."
