Prologue: The Full Moon Singer Legend
Once upon a time, there was a musical beginning, in which classical and instrumental drove the market. But evolution has caught on, music is expanding all over the globe. New inventions, new experiments with new singers.
And it has hit Finland!
In the 1990's, a popular new trend was so-called Eurodance music. This style, in and of itself, had numerous Finnish followers. Many of which today are, sadly, quite forgotten. A couple of bands in this genre also wrote their lyrics in English, but didn't make it on the international market.
A number of iskelma, rock-and-pop songs, have attained the status of a classic, where many people have had some connection with the song. But these pieces of art are not considered to be "hits of today."
There are some contemporary pop-rock singers and pop-rock groups, which are very popular in Finland. Primarily singing in Finnish, they stick to a relatively low profile internationally, but, in the late 2000s, there have been very few long-term bands singing in English (and Finnish).
Although the differences between "pop," "rock" and "iskelma" are remarkable in social significance, stereotypically, iskelma is music for people of greater age and countryside, while "rock" and "pop" are that of youth and people living in cities. The boundaries between the popular music genres are, in reality, rather vague, which seems to be true especially in a small number of popular songs that are performed over and over again in original form, or rearranged into new musical idioms and dialects.
With the arrival of new music forms, there are quite a handful of talented young male artists that are entering the song business. With all the talent, a legend was born as one of the early pop singers, a young man, only named Lucas Benjamin.
Setting Finnish trends for new singers, including being one of the first pop singers to grace Finland's stages and radios, he established himself as a performer and played before thousands. He was a pop star in every sense of the word...until he found a magical silver ball ornament. People spread rumors, saying that he purchased the item from a Helsinki pawn shop that is owned by a powerful psychic wizard.
The wizard placed a blessing on the object as well as a curse.
Activated only on a full moon, the legend came to be known as the "Full Moon Singer." The ball would glow when a singer was to hold it in their hands and sing a phrase to it. The trick was, however, only good singers could activate it for wishes. The falsetto of a singer's voice was the key.
This is why many pop singers have found success in Finland as opposed to others.
Lucas Benjamin, product of the orb's success, began to pass the object on to other worthy singers that were just breaking into the business. He seemed to have a knack for knowing just who to pass it on to, continuing to drive up the fame of pop music in Finland and make it the country's staple genre of music.
But then...
The ball was passed into the hands of someone named Isaac Taehyung, who struggled to comb his voice after puberty. When he tried to use the ornament, he simply vanished off the face of the Earth and from Finland, leaving behind only a handful of ten songs produced when he was a teenager.
It is unknown what happens to the bad singers, but most have simply just disappeared out of nowhere. It's highly fabricated through one survivor, who learned how to sing, that the bad singing enacts a curse of failure and sends the person off to a fairytale world known as Busantia.
Throughout the years, the ball has gone missing. No one can find it. So, singers focus on gaining natural success as opposed to seeking and winning it from magic. It's since been forgotten, unimportant, until two music industry rivals were born.
One, super talented with a falsetto so sweet and romantic to sweep you off your feet and a range out of this world.
His name is Robin Nieminen.
Following in Lucas Benjamin's footsteps, Robin started out writing and producing songs solely in Finnish, but has since branched into English-version songs, mainly to gain international status recondition. He is well-known around Finland, being a popular pop music genre icon, driving music charts and Suomi-Spotify lists. He constantly produces number one hits, which leads him to being celebrated throughout the northern European country.
The other singer, with a smaller range, has struggled to gain stardom and is full of jealousy for those who succeed.
Lee WooJin is his name.
