Operation Choose

"Now where do I start?" Jimin wrings his hands nervously, a sad smile on his face as the two of you walk down the almost deserted street. Well, it:s not like you expected anything less - it's a little past six, and not many sane people - apart from the older ones, but they're called senile for a reason - would be out at such an ungodly hour.

"Maybe from the beginning?" You try not to let the bitterness seep inyo your voice, but you suspect you've already failed. "When you left me alone on New Year's Dance."

He glances at you guiltily. "Y/N..."

"Literally minutes before the clock struck midnight." You're on a roll anyway, and not even his painfully sorrowful look can quell your bitterness.

"Y/N..."

"And I was alone," You swallow. "And cold, because hell, it was December, and everyone was staring and it was so sudden and I was crying so hard-"

"Kitten." He gently takes your hand in his, and runs the pad of his thumb over your knuckles. "I know. I know, I was an asshole."

"Because you had promised." The months of pent-up feelings have begun to crop up, and you feel like you are relieving all the anger, the rage and the pain that had built up in you. "You said that you wouldn't go, and you didn't even warn me, and it was like a jump scare but it was real-"

"I'm sorry." His words sound genuine, and maybe a month ago, you would have believed them.

But the episode of the car is still fresh in your mind.

"Tell me something," You try to keep your voice level. "While you were gone - when you were...running your father's..." Words fail you. "What did you do?"

Jimin suddenly goes quiet, his expression closing off. You shiver, feeling scared at the thought of him actually doing something - Jimin, the boy who stole your first kiss and all your first times.

"Pass." He says hoarsely.

You drop your hand, your fingers slipping from his grip, and shake your head. "Why have you come back?"

You almost laugh at the irony of it - just a few weeks ago, all you wanted was for him to come back. And now, you weren't so sure.

He opens his mouth, but before he can speak, his phone rings. Sighing, Jimin pulls it out and answers the call, throwing you an apologetic look as he turns around.

Your hands feel clammy.

A few minutes later, he's back and his face has smoothed over. "I'm sorry about that, kitten, but something important has come up - I...I have to-"

"Go?" You smile, bitter. "Leave, then."

The skin around his mouth goes white. "I'll be back, I promise."

"Don't bother." You whisper, blinking away the sting in your eyes. "I don't miss you anymore, Jimin."

His face freezes, his eyebrows nervously drawing together. "What-"

"You came back at the wrong time." You say, face blank. "I've...I think I've finally found that part of myself that doesn't really need this, Jimin. And anyway - we never could work out."

Jimin's face is slack, fearful. "Why?"

"Why you left in the first place." You step back, and suddenly your anger has melted away into sadness. "We're just not right. When you left...it took me a long time to figure myself out. But I think I finally have."

He doesn't speak.

"Yoongi was right." You swallow thickly. "You can't just waltz back into my life and expect everything to be okay again. You left me, Jimin. And even if you think it was to protect me, it was still selfish.

"When you left me alone that day at the dance," The words come easily now, and you don't feel like crying anymore. "You know who was there for me? It wasn't just Yoongi - it was Taehyung, Jungkook, Hoseok - hell, even Lisa in her own twisted way-" You feel a laugh bubbling up inside you. "Not you."

His face is ashen. "You don't want me anymore."

"I don't need you anymore." It sounds wrong, but you get the words out. "You - a murderer, a dealer, the leader of a gang - and me, just another girl. What are the odds, Jimin? Do you really think we can work?" You shake your head. "I can't leave everything I have here. There's something - some people - holding me back."

"I-" Jimin can't seem to speak. "But I..."

"Even if you do, it doesn't matter." You smile at him sadly, stepping away from him. "Even though I cared about you - I don't know if you're the same person I used to care about - I can't support what you do, Jimin. You made that choice. Now I've made mine."

"Kitten..." His expression is stricken.

"Goodbye, then." You incline your head. "I hope you remember my words, Jimin."

And you turn to walk away, but pause and look at him once more.

"It's your choice." You say. "Your path.

"You chose this that night when you left me."
