Family That Could Have Been
~Cira POV~
Just as quickly as I had warmed up on the ship, we were back in the snowy, icy, streets of Pantora. My blue blooded apprentice seemed right at home, waltzing around in just a light jacket over her usual tunic and leggings. I, on the other hand, had a massive, fur lined parka on over snow pants, snow boots, and the hood up. Though, she did make sure we both had foot warmers. I honestly wouldn't have even known those existed. I'm glad I do now.
We eventually arrived at a ground level house complex. Each was cozy and homey looking, very different than Corasaunt. Each house even had a big, fenced in backyard and a much needed garage for whatever personal ship they each had.
"Does this place look familiar?" I asked Yula, who I could sense was incredibly nervous.
She sighed, her breathe showing prominently in the cold air. "Nope, but it feels right. And according to the Data Card, this is the place." She glanced down at the holo she was holding, her lilac hair whipping around in the stormy winds.
"After you, then," I put a hand on her shoulder and gestured to the door,"You're luckier than most." She's probably the first Jedi in hundreds of years to ever revisit her family. Yet somehow she managed to track her mom down in a Galaxy full of people. Sometimes I swear she's too cunning for her own good.
She smiled and nodded, taking one last, deep breathe, and walked up to the steps. She hesitated before ringing the doorbell. The buzzer sounded and inside we heard a woman talking over her laughing, happily yelling kids. "Boys, quiet down! Someone's here."
Yula turned, wide eyed. "Wrong house. I don't have siblings!" She whirled around and started bounding back down the steps, then stopped a few feet behind me, clearly wanting to leave before we meet the person inside.
She was taken in when she was 2, and was 16 now. Turning 17 soon. "Wait, you have been gone for 12 years. You never know." I tried to convince her to see it through, trust her initial instincts.
The frozen, grey door slip open with a shivering creaking sound, and there stood a Pantoran woman. With the same facial markings as Yula. She had shoulder length, wavy lilac hair that was pulled back into a messy bun.
Yula then turned around while standing a little ways behind me from her attempt to retreat. When the woman saw her, she gasped and her eyes widened to the size of moons. Yula stood there, speechless. They both shared the same diagonal, double, yellow lines under and above their eyes. That was the mark of her lineage.
"Yula..?"
Yula took a few steps forward so she was not between me and the steps. She nodded and smiled. The woman ran down the steps, despite being in pajamas, and wrapped her in a giant hug. Yula, being the socially awkward thing she is, stood stiffly and half hugged her back. Honesty, it's an honor to even get that from her.
"Wait so, I have brothers?" Yula asked once we took our layers off, myself having the most, and the two twin boys were running around the living room.
Her mom smiled and chuckled a bit,"Boys, come here!" The two came bounding in, abandoning whatever game they were playing,"This is Luka and Jato." She gestured to the two who stood at her side looking appropriately confused. They only physical difference between the two was Luka had a red sweater, and Jato a green one.
Yula awkwardly waved a little to them and tried to imitate Master Yoda talking to younglings,"I'm Yula," she hesitates before adding,"Your-um- your sister."
The two stared up at Yula, then their mom. "Why don't you two run off to bed, you have school tomorrow," she said to then kindly as she ushered the confused, young boys off to their rooms upstairs.
Yula looked over and grimaced after they left the scene,"Should I have said that?" She asked worriedly.
"Maybe not, but they'd find out anyways," I chuckled and smiled,"It's probably pretty cool to have s Jedi for a sister."
She smiled down at her boots, which now had a puddle beneath them, and then slowly wandered off. She walked around her old house, almost cautiously, as if she'd disturb someone or disarrange the furniture.
"Is it strange to be back?" I asked as I followed her around, examining the old pictures and artifacts. One was an old photo of Yula as a child. The same crazy hair, the same crazy smirk. Just in the form of a baby. She was playing with a stuffed Pantoran Wolf outside in the snow. I couldn't help but smile fondly at it. So purely joyful. So entirely and completely happy. I felt like that side of her rarely ever showed nowadays. I try and tell myself it's teen angst.
"A little," she replied as she finally looked back over to me from across the room. "Its just, I don't know..," her words trailed off,"Weird to see what could have been."
I looked at her thoughtfully and asked with a gentle voice,"Do you ever wish this was the life you'd been given?"
Her eyes darted to the side and she fiddled with her sleeve. Before she could say anything, her mom cams walking down the stairs and back in,"So sorry about that. It's an early morning for them, and once it hits 8:00 they never fall asleep." She sat down on a chair and smiled, pointing towards a sofa,"Please, have a seat. I want to hear everything."
After hours of telling her mom, who was named Benavola Gafomaar, Yula went upstairs to get some much needed rest. She's been through too much lately.
"So, Cira, what's your role? Mentor? Guide?" She asked, both fascinated and curious about the subject of the Jedi.
"Well," I said leaning forward,"A little of everything. A mentor, guide, protector, supporter-" she cut me off.
"-Like a parent." She smiled longingly. I could sense a lot of sudden relief and gratitude.
I smiled a little bit, having never heard the words escape someone's lips before. I barely let myself think like that, let alone say it. "Attachment is forbidden for Jedi... But yes," I smiled from ear to ear,"Like a parent."
I talked with Benevola for a little longer. She expressed her gratitude for Yula ending up under my wing and that she was fulfilling her destiny as a Jedi. It became a therapy session of sorts. She confided in me about feeling guilty for not being there, but also thankful she ended up where she's meant to be. With the Jedi.
As I climbed up the stairs to the guest room, I knocked softly on the door to Yula's room. I was signaled to come in by an exhausted sounding,"Come in."
She was sitting against the headboard of her bed, holding a stuffed Pantoran Wolf. The same from the picture. Her room looked as if though it was for a young child. It must've never gotten renovated after she left, all those years ago.
"How you holding up? I can sense you're at odds with something," I said as I sat on the other end of the bed.
She sighed and sat cross legged, placing the old, stuffed Wolf beside her. "This is just so weird. It's like I'm seeing what life would be like if I'd never gotten found or trained as a Jedi," her voice darkened,"What it'd be like without the war..."
I smiled somberly,"At least you're here. You've got to be the first Jedi in at least a hundred years to be able to come back to their birth family."
She smiled, much happier this time. "I know," her voice trailed off before she out of the blue said,"Thank you for coming with me."
I smiled at her,"I always will. Plus, you'd find a way to get yourself killed if I didn't."
She chuckled a little before doing something I never ever in a million years thought I'd see her do. The socially awkward, emotion hating, grumpy as could be Padawan reached forward from her side of the bed and hugged me. Actually hugged me. Not some awkward pat on the back, but a real hug. I was taken aback at first, but hugged her back just as warmly.
"I love you, kid."
"Ditto."
