The Magic

Pay Day is a miraculous thing. I remember hearing the old stories, the legends of how Meowth can create gold from thin air.

Let me tell you right now, It's all true.

I found myself admiring the home being constructed around me on the mountainside. I had never seen the Vanderbook's home so close before. Mother had never been so happy, and father so proud. We told the local newspaper that I had stumbled upon some buried treasure in my backyard, and a sack full of gold coins... Two thousand to be exact.

I had expected to pay one thousand for the house of my family's dreams, but because I had so much money, and Mr. Macho, Shrooma Town's homebuilder, had some ideas, I paid one thousand and three hundred gold coins for an even better house. The rest of the gold pennies, I took to the banker, for him to keep safe and give to those who had good ideas. He had told me that my money would grow, and by the time the home was completed, the seven hundred gold coins I had left over in the bank had grown to seven hundred and fifty. My money was multiplying like magic. This was how the Vanderbooks, the Cleaners, and now, my family, was going to earn its living from now on. We had it all figured out.

At last, the house was completed, and I sat on the mountainside with Mr. Macho, the homebuilder, as we looked down into the valley. I saw my old neighborhood, and the little wooden shacks looking like a maze of blocks down below. "Wouldn't it be great if more people found some gold?" I asked. "Then, they could all have homes like my new one."

Mr. Macho smiled. "I second that," he said. "If more people could buy homes like that, I'd be a very rich man, and I could pay a lot more workers a lot more money to build them. I tell ya, it's hard work building houses, but its not as miserable as being in those mushroom mines. But, you know, man's gotta eat, and them mushrooms once they've been cleaned are a lot cheaper than trying to get berries all the way from across the mountains."

I sat outside my new house that night and looked up at all the lights shining in the new rooms. I was about to go inside and have a new mushroom stir-fry dish that mother was preparing, but Pooch started barking again.

Sure enough, there was Meowth, smiling at me, gold coin shining on its head.

I gazed at my house, and then at the maze of wooden shacks where the poor miners used to live. Where we  used to live before when we were a poor family just like them.  Then, I had my idea. I looked at Meowth, and I put my plan into motion. Soon, there would be no more poor people living in our little town, once there was only a little bit more gold to go around.

My plan was perfect, or so I thought.
