(S1-C5) Tying up Loose Ends
People always say time flies by when you're having fun. And clearly, that sang is true. It's been a few months since Marshall and Everest had become mates. To say that the two had gotten closer would be an understatement. At this point, they were practically inseparable, especially since the husky had moved into the lookout
Right now, the sun was beginning to rise up, as it was the start of a new day. And despite usually sleeping in as much as she could, today Everest woke up earlier than she typically would. Not willingly, but it wasn't just by chance either. It's what this day was, and the horrible memories it brought back. It was a normal day for everyone else, and she had mostly gotten over everything, but this one day was always hard.
She sat there in her mate's puphouse just silently thinking, trying her best to not tears escape her eyes. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to do or feel, but luckily, she suddenly heard Marshall waking up, allowing her to turn her attention to something that actually made her happy.
"Good morning Marshy." She greeted warmly, nuzzling him as he tiredly stood up. The dally smiled and nuzzled back, but he felt like something was off. Everest didn't seem as cheery as she usually did, her smile seemed forced, and the look in her eyes was off. But, he figured she just might not have slept well, so he shrugged it off.
"Morning Eve." He replied after letting himself wake up. He still couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, so of course, wanting her to be ok, he asked her about it. "Is everything ok? You seem a bit down."
"Huh? Oh, I'm fine, just tired." She answered, making up an excuse. Although not fully convinced, Marshall just let it go as the two left their puphouse to join the others for breakfast. They both went outside to see Chase and Skye also leaving their houses.
The two couples greeted each other before Chase pulled out his megaphone and signaled for the other three to cover their ears, something they defiantly wouldn't have to be told twice. That stupid megaphone seemed like it would blow out one's eardrums sometimes.
"ALRIGHT, GUYS! LET'S WAKE UP AND GET BREAKFAST!" He shouted. As always, Rubble woke up the second Chase said breakfast. The bulldog quickly ran outside of his puphouse along with the others, only they were slower.
"Come on, what are we waiting for? Let's eat!" He said happily as he ran into the elevator, followed by the rest of the pups as they shook their heads in amusement. Everyone went upstairs for breakfast, which Ryder had just finished preparing.
Despite loving the liver pup food that the boy would get for her, Everest still ate slowly. Even if she was just tired, she would always at least eat something. That fun and tomboyish side of her just wasn't there right now. Even though she knew that her past couldn't physically hurt her, it still stung in her heart.
Her still unusual behavior didn't go unnoticed by her mate as he walked over to check on her. "Eve, are you sure you're ok? You usually love that food. Do you feel sick?" He asked, clearly concerned.
"I already said I was fine Marshy, you don't need to keep asking." The husky responded, raising her voice slightly. Unlike the last time, Marshall wasn't convinced. He knew her well enough to know when something was wrong.
"No, you're not. I can tell you're upset. I just wanna help, please tell me what's wrong." Marshall begged, hoping for some sort of an explanation. Instead, he got a much different reply from her.
"I SAID I WAS FINE MARSHALL!" Everest yelled in frustration. Everyone was shocked by her sudden outburst, especially Marshall. She had never gotten angry at him like this, or at anyone for that matter.
After realizing what she had just done, she immediately got up and ran out of the lookout. "Wait, Eve come back!" She heard Marshall calling for her, but she didn't stop. She went outside to clear her head and laid down under a tree. That same tree that Marshall confessed to her under.
She mentally cursed herself for what she had just done. The dally was only trying to help her, and she just made things worse. Not to mention now she just felt guilty for yelling at him, something she thought she'd never do/
Shortly afterward, Marshall came out looking for her. Once he spotted her, he slowly walked over to her, not wanting to make her any more frustrated than she already was. Everest heard him and turned around to make eye contact. She motioned for him to come over and sit with her, which he did.
"Eve, I'm sor-." Marshall began to say, but was interrupted by the husky.
"No, you don't need to be sorry. It's my own fault, it was stupid of me to try and keep this from you." She replied. The dally sat there for a minute, assuming she'd elaborate more, but she stayed quiet.
"Keep what from me?" He questioned, realizing she wasn't gonna say anything. Everest let out a sad sigh, knowing exactly what would happen next. She never liked thinking about her past, but now she didn't have much of a choice.
"My past. I lied when I said lived in the south pole for as long as I remembered. I used to have a home, but on this day a few years ago, I ran away and boarded a ship that apparently went down there." She explained.
"Oh. I understand if you don't want to tell me, but why did you run away?" Marshall asked, curious as to why she felt the need to hide all of it from him. He had multiple questions but decided to stay quiet and just let her talk.
"It's fine, I'll just start from the beginning. I was born into a family of husky breeders, so I was quickly sold off. The family that bought me wasn't a very good one. They fed me and gave me water, but that was about the most attention I got. That wasn't the problem though. The real reason I left was because of their other husky, Damian." She paused for a moment as Marshall wrapped an arm around her to try and comfort her.
This was the part that Everest really didn't want to tell him, but she knew she had to. "Marshy, I'm going, to be honest with you, you aren't my first mate. Damian was, but I didn't really love him. He forced and manipulated me into being with him." At this point, tears were starting to run down the husky's face. Marshall noticed and pulled her into a hug before she continued.
"It was awful. He would abuse me. He said that if I ever left him and found a new mate, he'd kill me. I couldn't handle it anymore, so I left. I didn't even care where I ended up, just as long as it was far away from him. I don't know what happened to him after that." She choked out between tears as Marshall held her in his arms.
"It's ok Eve, he's gone now, he can't hurt you anymore. I promise you I would never do something like that." He reassured, to which Everest calmed down surprisingly quickly.
"I know you wouldn't Marshy. I've basically fully gotten over it at this point, it's just that this day brings back some of those memories." She replied. She was smiling now, which let Marshall know that she was fine now.
Before they could say anything else, their puptags went off. "Paw Patrol, to the lookout!" They heard Ryder's voice ringing through. The two got up and joined the rest of the pups at the lookout. Chase said his signature line, and then their leader started delivering the mission.
"Before I say anything, Everest, are you ok?" He asked. The husky nodded, and just by looking at her, they could all tell she was feeling a lot better. Whatever Marshall had done or said worked well.
"Good. So anyways, Mrs. Goodway was out skiing on Jake's mountain and she ended up falling and injuring her leg. So for this mission, I'll need Everest, since we'll be in the mountains, and Marshall, to make sure that there are no major injuries." He explained.
The two pups looked at each other and smiled. It was rare that they got to go on missions with each other, much less it just is them two. It would be nice to just have some time without the other pups around. Sure, it had to be while they were working, but that was fine. Besides...
What was the worst that could happen?
