(S1-C13) Second Chance

"Well, I have two things of good news for you girl." Haley said as she walked towards the husky's bed. "First of all, your breathing is back to normal, so you don't need this anymore. It's going to feel a bit weird when I take it out by the way." She stated, beginning to remove the tube from her throat.

The husky took a few breaths, glad to have the tube gone. It had been very limiting for the past few days. "Thanks, that thing was really annoying. Oh, and what else were you going to say?" She asked, realizing she had interrupted the nurse.

"And second of all, that means you get to go home today!" Haley announced. The pup immediately jumped up in excitement, she was waiting to hear that ever since she woke up.

"Really?!" She asked happily. Haley smiled at her obvious joy and gave her a small pat on the head, to which the pup nuzzled her hand in response.

"Yep, you finally get to get out of here and go see your family again. Now, what's your name?" The nurse questioned.

"My name's Everest." The husky replied.

Haley clearly got caught off guard by what she had said. "Wait, like the one from the Paw Patrol?" She asked with a small laugh, assuming it wasn't actually her. That Everest was dead, wasn't she?

"Yep, that's me." Everest confirmed, a bit confused on why she found that weird. However, she had been in a coma for three months now, so there really had been no way of knowing.

The girl's eyes almost popped out of her skull out of surprise. That was an answer she wasn't ready for at all. "Wait what? Y-you're the actual Everest?" She replied in return, earning a simple nod from the husky.

"Wow. I mean, Everest......everyone thought that died months ago. From what I heard, your funeral was just about a week ago." Haley explained, confirming one of her worries. The others thought that she was killed, so they had no idea that she, well, wasn't. She looked back at Haley with a very nervous expression, havning one other major concern.

"W-what about the others? Is Marshy still alive?" She asked, still completely unaware of what had happened to him after she fell off the cliff.

"Who is-, oh you mean Marshall, right?" The nurse asked in return. Everest blushed a bit realizing she had used his nickname, just out of habit. Regardless, she nodded. "Well, as far as I've heard, yeah he's alive and so is everyone else."

The husky sighed in relief. Her mate was still alive. Damian didn't kill him, and that's all she could've asked for. Although, She still knew that her supposed death would be very hard on him. It had likely taken a toll on him, she just wasn't sure how big it was. Either way, she would get to see him at some point today. Wait, wasn't today...."Haley, what is today's date?"

Haley thought for a moment, then just pointed to a calendar.  A huge smile appeared on Everest's face as she saw what today was, which Haley noticed. "Heh, what's that look mean? Is something happening today?" She asked.

"Today is Marshy's birthday." The husky replied simply, even more excited that she'd be able to see him on his birthday. She knew he'd be overjoyed to see her after all the time they had been sepertaed.

"Oh, well then, looks like we found him a good gift. So let's get you home so you can see him. Do you want me to call them to come and pick you up, or would you rather me just bring you there? I drive through Adventure Bay to get somewhere anyway so I wouldn't mind at all." Haley offered.

"I'll just ride with you then, I think it would be more fun to surprise them." Everest replied, trying to contain her excitement. Haley couldn't help but giggle seeing the pup so happy.

"Alright then, let's get going." She replied, grabbing her car keys. The two left the building, giving the husky her first breath of fresh air in three months, which felt rather refreshing. It had been to long since she had been outside, but at least things seemed to be back to normal.

By the time the two had gotten to two Adventure Bay, Everest had another idea. "Hey, can you drop me off at Katie's? She's that vet building over there. I think it would get a better reaction than me just showing up." She requested as she pointed to Katie's building. Haley chuckled and agreed, pulling over.

"Well, I would love to meet everyone, but I really need to get going. Take care girl." Haley said as the husky jumped out of her car.

"Aw, do you think maybe you can come back one day and visit? I'm sure the others would want to meet you." Everest offered. Even though she hadn't spent too much time with the nurse, she still saved her life. And, she knew everyone else, especially Marshall, would want to say something.

"If you want me to, I'm sure I can come by at some point. I have to come through here to pick up supplies. But we can talk about this another time, I need to go. Bye Everest!" Haley called out as she started to drive away.

"Bye! And thanks for everything!" The husky responded. After that, she turned and walked into Katie's, hoping she was there. It would be a bit awkward if she wasn't.

Thankfully she was. "Just a minute!" She hollered from the back once she heard the door. About a minute or so passed before she came walking in with a glass of water. "Hi, how can I h-" Katie froze and dropped her glass upon seeing the husky. "E-Everest?"

"Yep, hi Katie." The husky greeted, in a surprisingly nonchalant tone. Katie eyed her carefully, almost as if testing if it was really her, before rushing up to her and giving her pets, clearly happy to see her.

"W-wow, I-I can't believe this. Where have you been, girl? What happened? We all thought you died." Katie exclaimed.

"I'll answer that soon, but first can you call the pups and Jake and tell them to come here. Oh, and tell them not to bring Marshy. I want to surprise him later tonight." She requested. Although still shocked, Katie nodded and reached for the phone.

At the lookout, the rest were planning out Marshall's party. They had all gotten him gifts, but it was kind of hard to get gifts for the pup who seemingly couldn't care less. Hopefully, their effort would be paid off, his party would start in about an hour as it was already around five. Just as they were about to finish, Ryder heard his phone ringing.

"Katie? Hey, What's up? Perfect gift for Marshall? What are you talking about?" He asked. There was a slience for a moment before he said his goodbyes and hung up. After that, he turned to the pups who were all looking at him confused.

"Apparently Katie has found a really good gift for Marshall. From what I could hear, she's pretty excited about it. She told me to bring you guys down there so she can show you. I think she said she was also gonna call Jake, not sure why though." He explained. The rest of the pups got excited and all ran out to their vehicles, hoping that it was as good as it was being made out.

Ryder made sure to stop by Marshall's puphouse to let them know that they would be leaving for a bit. Unsurprisingly, the dally didn't show any interest in going, so he just bid them farewell. He was feeling even worse today. He knew that he should feel happy today, it was his birthday after all. However, he would still be spending it without his mate by his side.

The pups and Ryder made it to Katie's and walked in. Jake had also just arrived, and he seemed just as confused as everyone else. "So, what's the gift, Katie?" The boy asked, getting straight to the point.

The girl smirked at them, excited to tell the rest. "Well, I think I found Marshall's second chance at happiness. This will help him so much with everything he's going through." She explained. The others exchanged confused glances.

"Well, if it's that good, what is it?" Chase asked, a bit skeptical. Surely, her gift couldn't be that good, it would take a miracle to really help Marshall. This gift would have to be a life-changer to do that.

"Well, it's not exactly a what Chase, it's more of a who." Katie replied. The others looked like they had just been told the most ridiculous thing imaginable. Katie had gotten Marshall a living being?

Seeing as no one had any idea what she was talking about, she continued. "Really? No guesses? I thought it would be pretty obvious that the best thing we can give him..." She paused before a new, yet very familiar voice spoke up.

"...Is his mate back." Stated the lavender husky, walking out from her hiding spot. If it was possible, everyone else's jaws would've hit the ground. They all just stood there in shock, not saying a single word.

Eventually, being the first one to do anything, Skye ran over to her friend, hugging her tightly, which was a bit hard due to their size differences. Regardless, Everest hugged back.

"Hi Skye, I've missed you as well". She said warmly. The cockapoo smiled and broke the hug as everyone else just sat there, still processing the fact that the husky was standing in front of them. "Well, aren't you guys gonna say something?"

"E-Everest, is that really you girl?" Jake asked, finally speaking. The husky smiled and nodded in response. Then, still trying his best not to cry, he bent down on his knees and opened his arms. Without hesitation, Everest tackled him to the ground and started licking his face.

"I'm so happy to see you!" The boy exclaimed as he hugged her. "But, how are you here? We saw you fall off the cliff, and I know you couldn't have survived that long alone." He asked. Everest got off of him and explained everything, how Haley had saved her, that she had been in a coma, and that now she was alive and ok.

"Aw man, I would've liked to thank her." Ryder remarked a bit disappointedly, referring to the husky's savior. "But still, I can't believe you're really here." He added, still letting the full reality of it sink in.

"She said that she would come and visit eventually, so don't worry about it. Anyways, how have you guys been? It's been a while, has everything been ok recently?" Everest asked.

"It took all of us a while to get over your death, so we haven't been doing too well. We've been on a break from missions ever since you died. Well, I guess you never actually died, but you know what I mean." Ryder explained as Everest giggled a little. There was still one thing the husky was concerned about though.

"Well, what about Marshy? How's he been taking it?" She asked worriedly. The atmosphere immediately shifted tones. Everyone felt uncomfortable. This was something Ryder had definitely never planned on having to explain to her.

"Oh jeez. Uhm, this might be a lot to take in Everest. First of all, he's been really depressed. He blames himself for your death, and the incident last week didn't help either." Everest cut him off before he got a chance to explain.

"What incident? Is he ok? D-did he get hurt?" She asked, clearly showing concern for her love.

"The day of your funeral, which was about a week ago, Damian came to the lookout." Everest's face went from worried to terrified as Ryder continued, knowing that this would only end poorly. "He didn't hurt any of us but he said some things and it really got to him." He sadly explained. "You know how Marshall can be, he takes everything to heart. Ever since then, it's seemed like he's been getting worse every day."

Everest felt terrified, starting to understand how much suffering he had been through. "Wait, worse? W-what do you mean? There's not something wrong with him, right?" She asked, starting to become genuinely scared at what answer she'd get.

At this point, Ryder just felt terrible for her. The look on her face showed such fear and concern, and he hadn't even told her the worst part. This next bit of news he'd have to share would destroy her.

He somehow had to break it to Everest that her mate had PTSD.
