Chapter 9
Urmila sat on the nuptial bed. She was beautifully dressed up by her mother-in-law Sumitra in a red and golden lehenga with intricate jewellery going along with it. As Urmila touched the sindoor in the parting of her forehead she still couldn't believe she was Lakshman's bride. Everything had happened so fast. Her thoughts went back to the time after Sita's swayamvar where her sister's marriage preparations were in progress and Sita didi had walked upto her.
"Didi just check whether I have packed the right dresses and jewellery for you," mentioned Urmila pointed towards the large trunks that were getting ready to be taken to Ayodhya post the wedding.
Sita made her sister sit on the bed gently caressing her cheeks, "Urmila I didn't come to check on whether you have packed the right things. I know my sister will do everything correctly. I came to ask you something. Urmi I have received a letter from Raghunandan. He has written his brother Lakshman has fallen for you. If you have no disagreements then he would like to speak about your alliance to his father King Dasrath who can speak to our father. So Urmi what do you want me to reply."
Urmila looked at her sister tearing streaming from her eyes. Her jeeju wanted to give her the man she loved. He was asking her permission to speak to his father. Sita hugged Urmila.
"Urmi you don't need to tell me anything. I understood your reply. I will reply to Raghunandan that my sister would love to come to Ayodhya as my sister-in-law". Urmila smiled and cried on Sita's shoulder and Sita too was crying. After all her sister too was coming with her. She was not going to be lonely in the big palace of Ayodhya.
"Princess Urmila," Urmila was jolted back to present hearing the voice of a maid. She looked up not lifting her veil indicating the maid to speak.
"Princess I have kept the milk and fruits on the table. Prince Lakshman would be arriving any time soon. Have a happy and beautiful night with your husband princess." Urmila blushed hearing it and the maid was smiling as she took leave.
Once again Urmila went back to her thoughts. What happened with the arrival of king Dasrath was not just the proposal of her and Lakshman. The king requested the hands of her cousin sisters Mandavi and Kirti for his sons Bharath and Shatrughna. Her father and her uncle were pleased and the alliances were fixed. In Mithila instead of one marriage four marriages were celebrated and the four sisters had entered as the daughters-in law of Ayodhya. They all were happy thinking that now rest of the life they will be together. They will be able to lead a happy life the way they had lived in Mithila. Unknowingly Urmila giggled thinking about the fights she can have with Mandavi and Kirti only to hear a voice.
"I was expecting a bride who will be blushing and here I am seeing someone who is giggling seeing her husband. What a welcome."
Urmila looked up and saw her husband looking at her suppressing a smile. Her cheeks blushed deep red but she didn't want to let him go easily for his remark.
"Sumitranandan look at yourself. Do you look a prince from any side? Always anger on that nose and sarcastic remarks. Is this the way a prince behaves. Look at Ram jeeju how calm he is. If not at least look at Bharat jeeju. How elegantly carries himself. Atleast take some trait from your twin Shatrughnan who is so obedient and talks to everyone with respect."
Lakshman sat on the bed taking her veil and pulling her close. Urmila's heart beats increased.
"Mila if I don't look at prince why did you choose me. You could have told your sister tell jeeju I would like to marry any of his other brother's but not this angry young man." Urmila's lips quivered as he took her nose ring and maang tikka. Her defenses were failing in his tight grip and she fell on his shoulder as Lakshman pulled her closer.
"Tell me Mila you didn't answer my question. Why did you choose me?" this time his voice was soft and Urmila could feel his breath on her neck.
"Sumitranandan I can admire qualities in anyone. But I can't belong to anyone else. My heart was set on you the day I saw you. It was like my soul was telling it has found its mate. It doesn't matter whether you look or behave like a prince. But you are the prince of my heart," her voice was whisper.
Lakshman lifted her face from his shoulders and held her shoulders looking deeply into her eyes.
"Mila you need to understand I am like Ram bhaiyya's shadow. My first loyalty will be always towards him. I don't want you to regret tomorrow that you married a wrong man who couldn't do justice to you or our marriage. I had even mentioned this to Ram bhaiyya that I don't want to marry because I may not be able to do justice to my wife. But he insisted I listen to my heart and accept you as my life partner."
Urmila held his hands, "Sumitranandan I had married you the moment Sita didi put the garland on Ram bhaiyya. I had decided to be your better half sharing your joy and sorrow and also the burden of your duties. If you had decided not to accept me then Urmila could have remained unmarried her whole life as she had become yours for now and ever. Dear husband I promise you, I will never come between you and your duty. I will do my best to ensure you deliver your duty properly. Never worry about doing justice to me. I just want the place in your heart forever. Promise me that place will never belong to another woman."
Lakshman cupped her hands, "Mila I the son of Dasratha and Sumitra promise you there won't be another woman in my life apart from you. You will be in my heart always and I will always love and respect you. I am always grateful to you for becoming my bride.
Urmila smiled with tears in her eyes as Lakshman gently hugged her.
In Kailas Parvathy looked at Mahadev who was deep in thought and questioned what was bothering him. He should be happy as they have attended the grand wedding of the human incarnation of Narayan and Lakshmi.
"Parvathy I am thinking whether Urmila will be able to carry the weight of her promise. Because even Narayan is dependent on her keeping the promise for the establishment of dharma."
"Mahadev you and my brother always speak in puzzles. By such things you are terrifying me. Urmila is a young girl. Let her enjoy her marital life. My brother can play Leela's later and Mahadev stop supporting him."
Mahadev looked at his anguished wife and replied with a smile, "Gouri you very well know I have also taken incarnation on earth. Rudramsa has grown up Devi. I would suggest for the time being you enjoy the Leela's of Kesarinandan not worrying about your brother's Leela."
Parvathy had to agree to Mahadev. Infact her brother never spoke anything about his Leela's. So, for the time being it was better she enjoyed the Leela's of Kesarinandan Hanuman who was giving hard time to his mother Anjana by doing so many naughty things.
