Chapter 12

Urmila sat in her room staring at the mirror. Ram jeeju had requested Sita didi and others to move out of the room as he wanted to talk to Mata Kausalya and Mata Sumitra. But Lakshman had refused to budge as he wanted to know what has happened and what Ram jeeju was planning to do. Finally, Ram jeeju had to order him out. Even then he hadn't accompanied her. He had decided to wait outside Mata Kausalya's room.

Urmila knew what would be the decision of her jeeju. Her jeeju was the embodiment of truth. So, if as the maids said if King Dasrath had promised Mata Kaikeyi two boons for saving his life during the war between Gods and demons then her jeeju would stand upto the word of his father. Because every child in Raghu Kul was taught even it means sacrificing your life to keep the word, you have to keep the word. So, if jeeju had accepted the 14-year exile to forest she very well knew what would her husband do. He will follow his brother to forest as Lakshman was Ram's shadow. Shadow cannot exist without form.

It was then Urmila faced the most important question of her life. Was she ready to let go of her husband for 14 years? She had given word to him that she won't come between him and his duty towards his brother. Can she live upto that word without crying? Even while thinking tears started flowing from Urmila's eyes erasing the Kajal. Then she thought even Sita didi will be in same condition. So together they will take care of Mata Kausalya and Mata Sumitra. She was sure Bharat jeeju won't misbehave with them even if he became the king. The thought of having Sita didi with her gave Urmila some courage.

Urmila's chain of thoughts was broken as she heard footsteps behind her. She wiped her tears and turned. She saw Lakshman standing there. His lips were silent but his eyes spoke volumes. She got up and walked to him.

"Sumitranandan I know you are accompanying Ram jeeju to forest for 14 years. I had promised you I won't come between you and your duty. I am the daughter of King Janaka and daughter in law of Raghu Kul. How could you think I wont live upto my word?"

"Mila, I know you would live upto your word. I also know you would have guessed my decision by this time. Ram bhaiyya want to ensure father's word is kept irrespective of injustice that has happened to him. He feels it's a son's duty. If he doesn't keep the word then no one will believe on the word given by a Raghuvanshi. I have to agree to him on that. So, I have decided to accompany him.

But my concern is about you Mila. The whole responsibility of Mata Sumitra and Mata Kausalya will be on you. I don't know how Bharat Bhaiyya will treat them post his coronation. So, you will have to manage everything."

"I have to handle everything. What about Sita didi. Wont she be here," Urmila was shocked and it showed on her face.

Lakshman gently touched her shoulder, "No Mila. Bhabi is accompanying bhaiyya to the forest. She mentioned she can't be in a place where her husband has been banished. If she stays there then she is not doing the duty of a wife. Bhaiyya and other elders had to agree to her arguments. One more thing is that we have to leave the palace today itself."

Urmila wanted to cry and shout. This cannot happen to her. She had to bid adieu to her husband and her sister. She had to manage the mothers alone. But then she remembered her father's words which he had spoken to all the four sisters.

"Daughters always remember if you are faced with a tough situation in life that's because Shri Hari trusts you to rise above the situation. He has chosen you as an instrument who can support him in establishing dharma in this world. So, accept the challenge with a smile on your face."

Urmila understood if Ram jeeju and Sita didi can go to forest for 14 years, her husband was willing to let go of his personal happiness in the service of his brother and sister-in-law she too can manage the mother's. She will get all the support of Sri Hari in her journey. She held Lakshman's shoulder back, looked at him with a smiling face and spoke

"Sumitranandan I wanted you to carry this smiling face of mine in your heart. You are taking this exile to protect your brother and my sister. I am your wife and just like Sita didi is sharing Ram jeeju's burden I need to share your burden. So, I take the responsibility of Mata Kausalya and Mata Sumitra. I promise you I will take good care of them to the best of my ability.

Lakshman pulled her into his arms and they shared a tight hug knowing very well the next time they can be so close physically would be after 14 years.Urmila sat in her room staring at the mirror.
