Author Q&A
*The most common questions from my Instagram Q&A compiled. Follow me on IG to see the rest as well as the special Q&A about the spin-off! Can be found on my story highlights.*
Q: How old are you/Where are you from?
A: I'm a twenty-three year old from Canada.
Q: Where did you get your inspiration to write Fighter's Den?
A: Honestly, it just came to me. Prior to writing book one I'd read an NA romance about boxing and that was a huge part of my inspiration. It's called Fighting Silence by Aly Martinez and I highly recommend it. It made me fall in love with the whole boxing/romance trope so I wanted to try it for myself.
Q: How old were you when you first started writing Fighter's Den?
A: I was nineteen by the time I wrote book one. I was still pretty young and I believe my writing has come a long way since. I'll always be proud of my first book but now that I've grown as a writer, I hope to go back and re-write it to make it better.
Q: Are you a boxer/do you watch boxing in real life?
A: Not at all. I also had to learn a lot about the sport as my books progressed. I've made technical errors in the first couple books but by book three I had the rulings down. Now when I see boxing on TV I think of my boys but still don't have the urge to actually watch a match.
Q: Which FD book is your favourite?
A: This is always the hardest question I'll get asked. I can't choose. All of my books are my babies and I love them for different reasons. So I'll tell you HOW each book is important to me. Book One is sentimental — my first ever book. Book Two is perseverance — I lost inspiration for a year and a half but came back stronger than ever. Book Three is déjà vu — the story came to me so easily I actually wondered if I wrote it in another life time. Book Four is realization (just like the title! crazy!) — it was the book that made me realize I was meant to be an author. Book Five is dedication — my hardest book to write in the series and I wanted to give up but I kept going and reached my insane goal of writing a five-book-series.
Q: Who is your favourite FD character?
A: Again, I love them all for different reasons. However, I have a super soft spot for Greg. I never saw his character coming. I honestly had no plans for him outside of book one but he ended up being the most important and amazing character. I think it goes without saying he deserves his own story. I'm seriously considering it. Probably a novella.
Q: Who is your favourite FD couple?
A: Can I just describe my favourite thing about each? Jax and Em are perfectly imperfect (and my OG's), Cam and Aves are hilariously sexy, Nate and Del are fairytale sweethearts, Ash and Ria are passionate with the deepest bond, and Wolfe and Melanie are my two loners who found a home in each other. I love all of them.
Q: Is your name really Amber Isabelle?
A: Nope. It's just my pen name. For personal reasons I write under a different persona but maybe one day you guys will know who I actually am. I truly hope so.
Q: Do any of your friends and family know about your books? Have they read them?
A: Only my younger sister knows about my Wattpad life. Her and I are tight and she's currently in the middle of finally binging the whole series now that I've completed it. The rest of my family? I'd rather slit my own throat than have them know I write smut on a daily! A select few of my friends know and support me as well! I'm waiting for them to finally read my series now (grr...come at their necks and tell them they're missing out!)
Q: Your books always talk about real life problems and issues. Have you been through some of the things your books talk about?
A: My books definitely center on some dark topics that I can't relate to but I do my best to bring awareness to these topics and do them justice. I don't want to just talk about things like depression and abuse and losing loved ones for the sake of a story. I want these things to have a spotlight, a positive one, so that people can be encouraged and know good things are set in stone even if bad things happen to them. I learn a lot about life everyday and I try to incorporate my knowledge as best as I can in my stories.
Q: Will your books ever be published?
A: It's hard to say. That's the dream! Wattpad is a tricky place sometimes too. I get offers for my books to be published but sometimes I can't trust who approaches me. I don't think I'll take any offer seriously unless it's the verified Wattpad account that approaches me! And if there are serious agents out there, then I'd most likely get an email so I'm always checking.
Q: How come your books aren't in the paid program?
A: I've thought about it for sure but ultimately feel like I'd be cheating my readers. Wattpad is slowly falling apart and is basically all about the money making and I don't want to contribute to that.
Q: How did you get to write like this?
A: Practice. Just keep writing and writing and writing and you'll see for yourself that you'll improve. I'm sure a lot of my readers have noticed that my writing improves with each book. I'm constantly researching and fixing what I can, but above all I just WRITE. Practice is everything and I know I still have a long way to go.
Q: Do you have any advice for someone who wants to write a book?
A: Just write it. A book can only get so far if it exists in your head. Once you put it out there in the real world, you suddenly have something to work with and you'd be surprised at how far you can take it. So just write it and surprise yourself.
Q: What are some tips for writing a book?
A: The three main foundations that help me are: plot, outline, and flexibility. Plot your story from the beginning. What are the elements you'll include so that you have a climax, a goal, development, and how does everything tie together? Outline your story finish to end. I like to do it chapter by chapter. I'll usually write the gist of what each chapter should include and it helps me map out how the plot will unfold as well as identify if I've left out loose ends. Be flexible above all. Sometimes you can't know a story until you write it and that changes things. Suddenly something in your plot and outline don't make sense anymore and that's okay. Change it as you go. Keep changing it until it feels right again. It's okay to be flexible.
Q: How can I conquer writer's block?
A: You can't. There's no answer. You just have to wait for inspiration to hit again. Sometimes that means to just keep writing until your words make sense. Sometimes that means taking a step back and giving your mind a break. Do what feels right and don't pressure yourself. Eventually you WILL feel inspired again and when the moments arrives, jump on it. I don't care if it's five in the morning, wake your ass up and write before that feeling is gone. I can't even tell you how many times I've written in the dead of night because that's the only time my creativity wants to flow.
Q: What comes after FD?
A: The spin-off, first and foremost. I'm making great progress on it and I'm so excited for you guys to read it. It's very different from my other books. Other than that, I have four other projects that are waiting for me to get started on. Don't worry, I have way too many books in me and I'm not about to stop anytime soon.
Q: Do you have any other platforms we can follow you on?
A: As you all know I've recently created an Instagram that I'm very active on. I reply to all your messages, and post as often as I can both on my page and on my story. I plan to only use Wattpad to actually post my stories but that's it. I'll only be interacting with my readers on IG because it's so much easier and better and I can do all kinds of things there. The next few weeks I'll be doing A LOT of promo for the spin-off with teasers, excerpts, and trailers. If you don't follow me there, you won't receive any of that content since I won't be including them on my Wattpad. I'll also be doing more Q&A's, polls, contests, and possibly an IG live. I promise the FD family is so much more fun there than it is on Wattpad. So please follow @its_author_tfb!
