The next morning when Patch wakes up instead of Patches, Kevin thought now was as a good of time as any to get Tim started on making Patch a legal citizen.
After giving his neighbor a call, he goes to find Patch. He finds him alone in the bedroom getting dressed.
"Hey, Patch. You ready?" Kevin asks with a huge grin.
"Ready for what?" Patch asks wondering why Kevin was grinning like the cat that ate the canary.
"Tim is on his way over. Today is the day we're going to try and start making you a legal person." Kevin smiles. He speaks in sign language so wherever Kirstie was, she could not hear him.
"Really?!" Patch asks with excitement. "I can't believe this is actually happening."
"That's probably Tim now." Kevin says when hearing the doorbell.
"I'm ready." Patch says after tying his hair back into a man bun.
They head downstairs where Kirstie is already opening the door for Tim.
"Well, good morning, Tim." Kirstie smiles. "You're out and about awfully early."
"Kirst, it's 9:30." Tim laughs. "Anyway, I came to steal your guys."
"Steal my guys? Why?" Kirstie ask as she looks around at Kevin and Patch.
"Uh, business." Tim smirks.
"Oh, really? What kind of business?" Kirstie asks crossing her arms over her chest.
"Nunya." Tim chuckles as he looks down at the short girl.
"Nunya business?" She shakes her head and rolls her eyes. "Cute, Tim."
"You guys ready?" Tim asks.
"Well, what am I suppose to do all day?" Kirstie whines.
"Jenika and Adam are at home. You can go over there, you and Jenika can start looking for a house." Tim says as he, Kevin and Patch start to leave.
"Awesome." She says, her eyes lighting up with excitement.
She and Patch kiss each other good-bye before he follows Kevin and Tim out to the car.
"Where to first?" Kevin asks as he fastens his seat belt.
"My lawyer, Tom Selleck. He's expecting us." Tim says as they head toward town. "He'll know what steps we need to take."
Patch sat in the back seat, he was nervous but couldn't seem to stop smiling.
~~
"How ya been, Tim?" Mr. Selleck says as he extends his hand.
"Couldn't be better." Tim smiles as he shakes his lawyer's hand.
"Congratulations on your wedding." Tom smiles as he gestures for the men to sit down.
"Thank you." Tim nods as he sits down. "We need your help."
"Sure." Tom smiles as he sits down at his desk.
"First of all, these are my friends Kevin Olusola and Patch. Now, for the reason we're here." Tim says. "Patch was born on the street, Skid Row. His mother abandoned him on the streets when he was born. So he doesn't know who she is. She sold her body for drugs so he doesn't know who his father is either. The problem is, there is no record of his birth. No birth certificate, no social security number, no nothing. So according to the records, he doesn't exist."
"Do you know if the mother is still alive?" The lawyer asks.
"No, they found her dead in an alley of a drug overdose." Kevin answers.
"Okay? That shouldn't really be a problem." Tom says, then turns his attention to Patch. "Do you have any idea about how old you are, Mr. Patch?"
Patch shakes his head.
"Uh, Mr. Selleck, he can't talk. He only talks sign language." Kevin answers. "But we're guessing maybe in his mid-twenties."
"But how did an infant survive living on Skid Row?" Tom asks.
"I was raised by an old man that everyone knew as Old Charlie." Patch says and Kevin interpreted.
"I have a friend who is the top investigator at the police department." Mr. Selleck says as he writes down the information that he's been told. "His name is Morgan Freeman and I believe he used to patrol Skid Row years ago. If anyone can help you, he can."
"I think I remember him." Patch signs. "But he would probably remember me as Patches."
Kevin interprets for Mr. Selleck.
The lawyer nods and writes that down in his notes.
"Let me give Morgan a call and see if I can get him started on the case." Tom says as he reaches for his phone.
"Well, it's a good start so far." Tim whispers to his friends while his lawyer is on the phone.
"Yeah, it sounds promising." Kevin says quietly.
"How long do you think it will take?" Patch asks.
"That, I don't know." Tim answers.
"Good news." Tom says as he hangs up the phone. "Morgan does remember you and he also remembers Old Charlie. He's already started his research."
"That's great." Tim smiles.
"And he's also expecting you." Mr. Selleck smiles as he stands up from his desk.
"Thanks, Tom." Tim smiles as he shakes his lawyer's hand.
"Anytime." The lawyer shakes their hands. "And good luck, Patch."
Patch smiles and nods as he shakes Mr. Selleck's hand.
The excitement was building as Tim drove quickly to the Police Department. They hurry into the building.
"May I help you?" The dispatcher asks.
"We're here to see Detective Morgan Freeman." Tim says, almost out of breath.
"Your name?" She asks with a smile.
"Tim Foust. Tom Selleck sent us." Tim answers.
"Alright. Just have a seat, I'll let him know you're here." The dispatcher says.
"I'm scared." Patch says, as he nervously bounces his leg.
"There's nothing to be scared about." Kevin smiles as he rubs a comforting hand on his friend's back.
"Mr. Foust?" A tall gray-haired black man greeted them with a smile.
Tim struggles to stand up but with a helping hand from Kevin, he manages.
"Detective Freeman. Tom speaks highly of you." Tim smiles as he shakes the detective's hand.
"We've been friends and golf buddies for years." Morgan smiles, showing the aged wrinkles on his weathered face. "Let's go to my office."
"So, is Patches with you? I haven't seen that little booger in years. I'm just glad to hear that he's still alive." Morgan says as he sits down behind his desk.
Patch chuckles as he taps on the detective's desk to get his attention.
Morgan looks up into the smiling green eyes. A smile slowly starts to form on the older gentleman's face.
"Patches? Heck, I'd know those green eyes anywhere." He laughs as he grabs the smaller man into a hug. "How the hell are you?"
Patch nods and gives him a thumbs up.
"Wow." Morgan says as he looks Patch up and down. "You sure look a hell of a lot different from the last time I saw you."
"I don't live on the streets anymore." Patch tells him. "Kevin and I live with my girlfriend and I have a daughter now, Emily."
"Holy cow." Morgan smiles, understanding what Patch was saying. "A girlfriend and a little girl. I'm so happy for you."
"Have you been able to find any information that could help Patch?" Tim asks.
"As a matter of fact, yes." Morgan beginning. "I remember finding the body of a young woman in an alley approximately 26 years ago. An autopsy was done. She had died of a drug overdose and it was discovered that she had recently given birth to a child."
"Was the body indentified?" Tim asks.
"Yes." Morgan answers as he thumbs through the files. "She was identified as Julia Roberts."
"Is there any way to estimate when he was born?" Kevin asks.
"Let's see." The detective says as he looks at the autopsy report. "Her estimated death was April 22, 1989. And from the report, she had given birth a few days before her death. So it would be safe to say, maybe around the 17th."
Patch smiles widely at his two friends as his eyes fill with tears. He now had a birthday and an age.
