Chapter Seventy-One

My eyes flutter open as I yawn still exhausted from yesterday. It doesn't take me long to notice the weight on my chest. I turn my head to see Archer sleeping next to me with his arm wrapped securely across my waist. Our legs are intertwined underneath the sheets.

He looks at peace for the first time in a while. I feel the same. Looking at him with his hair dishevelled and his lips slightly parted causes butterflies to erupt in my stomach. I find myself snuggling a little closer.

I know I need to tell Penny about me and her brother soon. I'm not going to make the same mistake I did last time. She deserves to know. I can't help the anxiety that grows in my chest at the thought of telling her despite her reassuring me, whatever happens, we'll be friends.

Once I've told her, I'll finally be able to relax knowing that I'm not hiding anything from anyone. With this in mind, I carefully lift his arm off of me and roll out of the bed. I open the door as slowly as I can to prevent it from making a noise and turn around to see if I was successful. A triumphant smile takes over my features when I see him still sleeping soundly.

I think I'm in the clear until my foot comes into contact with one of the floorboards outside and it creaks. I scrunch my eyes shut, freezing in place. Cautiously, I turn back hoping that I didn't wake him up. I'm not sure what time we fell asleep last night but I know it was late.

"Where are you going?" He asks. His voice is deeper than usual, and it sends shivers around my body.

I plaster a smile onto my face. "To see Penny," I state.

I sigh in relief when he rolls over and pulls the duvet over his head. I'm not used to seeing him in my bed but I'm definitely happy about it. We've only spent the night together a couple of times, but I treasure them all. Yesterday was definitely a day to remember.

I rip my gaze away from him and pad over to her room. My fist comes into contact with her door as I knock on it. I press my ear against it when I don't get an answer right away only to hear shuffling on the other side. The shuffling stops seconds before the door's ripped open.

"Madison," she says breathlessly.

"Morning." I chorus, choosing to ignore her strange behaviour.

I walk further into her room before plopping myself onto her bed. Countless ways to start this conversation swim around my head. I find myself getting lost in them. When I return to reality, I notice her biting her nails. "Are you okay?" I eye her suspiciously.

She purses her lips. "I need your help."

"With what?"

I don't expect what she says next. When I finally process it, my eyes are wide, and my eyebrows are raised. "Tyler stayed the night and I need to get him out of the house before Archer wakes up." Her pleading eyes make me agree without a second thought.

"Where is he?"

She yanks open the door to her closet and reveals Tyler standing amongst her clothes. He steps out with a sheepish grin, a slight blush on his cheeks. He gives me a small wave as I stare at him blankly. "Oh," is all I say.

"I guess what I need to tell you will have to wait."

We set out on our operation to get Tyler out. He's still carrying his shirt in his hands when we leave the room. I'm not entirely sure why. He had time to put it on already, but I shrug it off. If he wants to walk around the house without a shirt on, then so be it.

I tell them to wait there while I creep towards my room, making sure to miss the creaky floorboard in front of the door. I open it as slowly as possible and peek my head through the gap. I'm met with Archer's sleeping form covered by my cream-coloured duvet. He's still asleep.

I close the door again and give Penny a thumbs up. A crease has formed in between her eyebrows. I already know what she's thinking. Why is Archer in my room? I'm thankful that she decides to leave it for now. We have more important things to do.

We all go downstairs, and she practically shoves him towards the door. "Now, leave. Quick." She demands. Her gaze is flickering all over the place. She's anxious about her brother seeing him here. I understand completely.

Tyler raises his hand and salutes her to which she rolls her eyes, a blush creeping up her neck. It makes me happy to see her so happy. If Tyler makes her happy then so be it. I know that Archer won't think the same way I do but he'll understand eventually. She's his sister and he's his best friend, how could he not?

"See you soon, beautiful." Tyler winks.

He turns to leave but we all freeze once we hear his voice. "What the fuck?"

I'm the first one to turn around. I cringe inwardly that he's awake. Penny turns around next, and I focus all my attention on her. We've been caught red-handed.

"How much of that did you see?" She asks awkwardly.

His eyes are filled with anger, but it isn't aimed at her. His stone-cold gaze is piercing through Tyler's soul. I watch helplessly as he stomps towards him. "I saw enough to know that you're fucking my sister." He spits.

His hands collide with Tyler's chest as he shoves him against the door. "You!" He seethes. "Out of all the people you could have chosen, you chose my sister!"

The redness spread across Tyler's cheeks gradually grows darker. I can't tell if it's from embarrassment or the fact that Archer is currently crushing him against the door. I look at Penny and then back to them. What do we do?

There isn't any regret in Tyler's eyes like I expected. I can see that he doesn't regret anything that's happened between him and Penny. The only thing he possibly regrets is not being straightforward about it and telling Archer.

"Listen, Arch." He grips his wrists to try and push him away, but he doesn't move. "I never meant for this to happen."

Archer shakes his head in amusement, a deep chuckle emitting from his lips. "That's a bullshit excuse." He says through gritted teeth.

"How dare you?" She shouts. Penny finally recovers from the shock and joins in. I'm itching to say something, but I know I shouldn't interrupt. This doesn't involve me. "You hid your relationship with Madison from me. How can you stand there and be angry at us when you did the same thing?"

"This is different." He's pissed off now which only makes my urge to interrupt stronger.

"How is it?" She asks. I start to feel uncomfortable being here. I'm pained with the guilt of what I did but I know that I need to do something soon before this gets out of hand.

"You've been sleeping with my best friend, Penny! Do you know how that feels?"

"I know exactly how that feels because you slept with mine. Or have you forgotten that Madison isn't only here for your own personal benefit?" She glares daggers at him.

"That's enough," I state causing their attention to snap to me. I don't want to pull the leaving card, but I know I have to. Their scrutinizing gazes make me want to back into a corner, but I don't. "I'm leaving in less than two weeks and I don't want our last memories together being us arguing, okay?" I pray that they give in.

Archer's eyes soften ever so slightly. He opens the door and shoves Tyler outside. He almost falls over from the force but manages to catch himself before his head hits the pavement. He stands up but there isn't any hatred in his eyes. He doesn't hate Archer for how he's reacted. My respect for him grows.

"Wish yourself lucky that I'm not kicking the shit out of you right now."

"What do you want me to say?" Tyler starts walking closer but decides against it. "Do you want me to tell you that I'm sorry?"

Archer rolls his eyes. "I don't want to hear it."

"I'm not sorry. You're right, I should have told you but I'm not sorry for everything that's happened between me and your sister. Don't take this out on Penny. This is my fault. She's done nothing wrong." He tries to persuade him.

"I can't look at you right now." He slams the door shut before pushing past Penny and going upstairs.

Penny and I look at each other with wide eyes. That definitely wasn't part of the operation. I shoot her an apologetic look before following him upstairs. The door to my room is slightly ajar and, when I push it open, I see him sitting on my bed with his head in his hands.

"Can you believe that son of a bitch?" His hands ball into fists.

I sit next to him. "Archer," I rest my head on his shoulder, intertwining our hands in the hopes that it will help calm him down. He releases a shaky breath which tells me that my affection does. "I get that she's your sister, but you should understand where she's coming from."

He doesn't say anything. "He makes her happy. I'm sure you saw enough of what happened downstairs to see that."

He sighs deeply, resting his head on top of mine. His hand squeezes mine and I squeeze his back. "I don't want to talk about this right now or else I'm going to end up going after him and doing something I'll regret." My heart melts even more
