Chapter 25
Alexis
I walk out of the shower with a towel wrapped around me. Sitting down at the dressing table, I quickly apply some body and face cream. I naturally hate creaming but I can't have my shiny skin look unhealthy.
In no time, I'm dressed in a black Tee-shirt on a pair of khaki shorts. Max is waiting for me in the living room. I told him we need to talk.
"Sorry for taking too long," I said when I sat down.
He smiled at me. "No problem, babe. What did you want us to talk about? I have the feeling it's serious."
I sit back to observe him for a minute, this person that I have come to show the kind of love I didn't know I had in me. He is more of a soulmate to me. He's a friend, a brother, a counsellor, everything I could think of. He is indeed a sight to behold as well. His jet black isn't scanty, neither is it full. It's just enough to suit his face.
He has a long British nose that makes him look like he came straight from paradise. His dentition is almost like mine, with a tiny unnoticeable gap between his upper front teeth. The difference between mine and his is that my gap is slightly pronounced.
The blue eyes his was blessed with are just out of this world. They look like electric blue and very beautiful. And then his smile, his smile alone can brighten my dark days. If men were beautiful, I would say my boyfriend is extremely beautiful.
"Alexi? Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Why not?" I say.
He scratched the back of his head. "You were staring."
This makes me smile sheepishly and say, "Sorry."
He moves closer and drapes an arm around my shoulders. "So tell me what's bothering you."
I can't help it but exhale. " First of all, it's about us." I can feel him stiffen at that. "I've been trying to understand how my father, who's all the way in Africa, got to know about us. I don't like that."
He rubs my arm. "I understand. But don't let that get to you. I'll see what I can do about that, okay?"
"Max, I don't mean to be rude but I have a feeling one of your friends told the media about it but it must have been a discreet thing since it wasn't in the news," I say. This is the part I've been dreading. What if he thinks I'm trying to turn him against his friends?
"Who do you have in mind?"
"Sierra," I say. Why do I feel like it's a bad idea telling him this?
He expression becomes serious. "Why?"
I take a deep breath. "Because my dad only called me a few days after we saw Sierra."
He stays silent for some minutes, he has the look which says that he wants to argue with me. Unfortunately for him, I don't have strength for that.
"What you're saying is impossible," he finally speaks. Just as I thought. "Did you want to consider how long Sierra and I have been friends? We've been friends since we were teens! She's the reason I stopped being bullied in high school!"
This is getting frustrating. "Could you quit telling?" I say quietly. I can see this will be our first official argument if I decide to match my tone with his, hence my reason for deliberately lowering my voice. If I yell back, I might end up showing him the extent of my madness.
"I'm sorry, Alexis, but I won't supposed your allegation against my friend. Think of something else to say."
So I'm now Alexis, how lovely, and because of a girl too. "Maxwell Jordan, I know what the fuck I'm saying. I'm a female so I know how the minds of female's work. Do you think I just woke up this morning and jumped into conclusion? Do you think I'm happy talking about your friend this way?"
"It sure looks like it!" he yells at me. I've had enough of this useless yelling. I mean, I know it's normal to argue but for him to yell at me in my own apartment because of a girl? I won't take that. It's not like he's paying my rent. "Please leave."
He looks stunned. "What?"
"I said leave," I repeat. "I said something in a mild manner and you took it to next level, screaming at me like I'm an animal. If she's so damn important, couldn't you explain that to me like a normal living being? Did you have to yell? Lord knows if you can ever defend me like this. Get out of my house and don't come back until you retrieve your manners."
He says nothing but stands up to leave. I open the door wide enough for him to take his demons with him. Max walks out, taking a last look at me. As soon as he drives out, I slam the door shut. It pains me that our first disagreement was over my fellow girl but I won't kill myself. That he's my boyfriend doesn't mean he can disrespect me, it isn't a guarantee that I'd take any shit from him.
