I walk into Grand Arts music studio. I'm on holiday and decided to come see my friends. For whatever reason, Sam hasn't been talking to me. I really want to find out why. Maybe I offended him or something. 

″Hey Khaled″, I greet the DJ.

″Sup Alexis. How've you been?″

″I'm good. Where are the others? ″

″They went to town but Renée is here. Why didn't you tell us you were coming? ″

″I wanted to surprise you guys, so, surprise!″

He smiles then gives me directions to where Renee is.
Funny enough, she's at the rooftop. Renée hates heights.
Well, she's at the door leading to the rooftop but that's not the point. She's looking at some guy who has his back to us.
Scratch that, she's watching him like a hawk.

″Hi Renée″, I say, placing my hand on her  shoulder.

She jumps.

″Don't do that again ″, she hisses.

Ok? What's up with her?

″Sorry ″, I say.

″It's fine. How are you?″

″I'm good. And you? ″

″I'm worried″, she says, sighing.

″Why? What's wrong?″

She looks surprised.
″Alexis, Sam is your best friend so how come you don't know what's wrong with him? ″

When she says that, I realise it's Sam she's been watching.

″Renée I've been calling and texting him but he wouldn't talk to me. I never heard from him throughout this last semester and that's strange. I don't know what I did wrong.″

″Oh. It's not you. It's his father,″ she says, ″go talk to him Alexis. You and Amara are the only ones he'll listen to. He doesn't even talk to Max anymore.″

″Uhmm ok.″

I go and sit beside him. I don't think he has even noticed my presence.

″Y'know, friends aren't meant to hide things from each other. Anyway, I've missed my best friend. I just hope he's missed me too″, I say after taking a deep breath.

He looks shocked that I'm here.

″I've missed you Alex. Why wouldn't I?″

″Then why did you stop talking to me? What's wrong Sam? ″

I can see indecision in his eyes. Why wouldn't he tell me what's wrong? I wrap my arm around his shoulders.

″It's Jim,″ he says after a while, ″he's been cheating on my mom for years now and I just found out. Worse, he wants his girlfriend and his kids to move in with us. He even said I was never enough for him but that's not the point. The point is that he's nothing thinking of how heartbroken my mom will be.″

Wow. His father must be an idiot to have a son like Sam and not appreciate him.

″You didn't tell your Mom?″

″I don't have the guts to do that.″

″Listen Sam, your father was stupid to have said such a thing to you. No matter how many children he has, they will never be you. People are out there looking for a kid like you while he's there deceiving himself. He'll look for you one day, trust me.″

He smiles. I just hope he knows that I'm telling the truth and not just trying to make him feel better.

″I want you to listen to something ″, I say as I pull out my phone. I play him Brother by MI and Bigger by Beyonce.

Then we sit there for a while without saying anything.

″I've made my decision″, he says abruptly.

My eyes twinkle. At least that's what I think.
″That's the Bolton I know″, I say.

When we get back to their lounging area, everyone is sitting and looking apprehensive.

″I'm fine guys,″ Sam says and everyone begins to look relieved.

″I have a plan though, ″ he continues.

″That's what I like to hear ″, Max says.
