Chapter 5

AN: I might take a short break from this story to update my others as well as figure out where I'm going with this one. Enjoy!

We kissed some more before I had to go. David drove me back to the boardwalk. He stalled while watching me walk away.

"You sure you have to go home now?" He called after me. I turned around with a laugh.

"I'm sure!" I called back. "I work tomorrow David. I gotta go to sleep! Good night!" I walked backwards while David watched me from his bike. I gave him a final wave before I turned the corner and headed towards my apartment building. I quickly went through my nightly routine before going to bed. As I tried to fall asleep, I ran my fingers over my lips, thinking about David and the many kisses that we had shared that night. The next morning, I got up and went about my business. As I was headed out of the door, I slipped on my jacket and turned around to lock my door. I slipped the keys into my pocket but felt something else in there. I pulled out David's gloves and smiled at them. I slipped them on and started my walk to work.

It was a long, boring day at the video store. Max came in at his usual time and greeted me with a hug. It was tighter and longer than his usual hugs so I knew he was checking me over to make sure that David hadn't hurt me the night before.

"I'm fine Max. Nothing happened last night." I assured him as he pulled away from the hug and went about clocking in.

"Are you sure?" Max asked, concern lacing his voice. I shook my head and laughed.

"I'm sure Max. Nothing bad happened." I moved from behind the counter to grab the stack of movies that needed to be put away.

"When you say nothing bad....." Max's eyes followed me around the store. I had to hide my blush and smile by hiding behind one of Max's many displays. "(Y/N), what do you mean when you say nothing bad happened?" his voice was slightly raised. Enough to tell me that I was in possible trouble but not enough to alert the other people in the store. I caught a glimpse of the clock as I was hiding from Max and silently thanked my lucky stars that David would be arriving soon. He hadn't actually said anything about coming to get me tonight. It was kind of expected at this point. Turning the corner, I nearly ran into Max who grabbed my arm to keep me from running away. "(Y/N). Please answer me." The look on his face was almost too much to bare.

"He didn't do anything to me Max." I shook my head at his overprotectiveness. "All that happened was he took me to watch the sunset on the beach and we went back to his place." I shrugged free of Max's hold and finished putting the movies back. Moving behind the counter, I kept my eye on the boardwalk, knowing David wouldn't come back in the store with Max watching him.

"You went to his place?" Max had come up behind me and cornered me. I sighed.

"Yes Max. I went back to his place. We sat and talked and had a good time." I responded. "He even drove me back here so I could get home." Max looked at me carefully. I could tell he was checking to see if I was lying.

"A good time." He sighed. "If that's all then I guess I have nothing to worry about." A flash of a bike and it's blond haired rider caught my eye.

"If you don't need me tonight...." I trailed off as I started to clock out. Max saw what I was looking at and shook his head.

"No. Go have fun." Max sighed. He stood aside and let me grab my things from under the counter. "But if he does anything, you'll tell me right?" I laughed and nodded.

"Of course I will Max." I shrugged on my jacket and pulled on David's gloves. I noticed Max's gaze lingered on the gloves for a second. "You're the closest thing I have to a father out here. And besides..." I leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I tell you everything." I smiled at him and made my way to the front of the store.

"Just be safe tonight. Looks like a storm is coming." Max lifted his hand in parting and I raised mine back.

"Will do." I turned around before I left the store. "Oh and Max?" He turned back towards me with a look of concern. "David and I kissed last night." I ran out of the store before I could see the look on Max's face but I knew he wouldn't be too thrilled about it.

During my conversation with Max, I had lost sight of David and his bike. Walking a ways down the boardwalk, I ended up standing on a picnic bench to see if I could spot him in the growing crowd. Realizing that he must have driven off somewhere to park, I got down and stood around thinking about what I should do. If I went back to the store to wait, Max would chew me out for kissing David. If I waited here, David might not realize I wasn't at the store and would spend the night looking for me. Or he would think I left without meeting up with him. In the end I decided to sit at the bench and watch the video store to see if David would show up there. People came and went. I was too busy people watching to realize that the person I was looking for was right next to me.

"Looking for someone?" I jumped at his voice and turned around. My hand flew to my heart and I let out a breathy chuckle.

"Oh my God! David! You scared me." I smiled at him as I tried to calm my heart beat. David tilted his head.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to." I noticed he was on his bike.

"You rode your bike on the boardwalk?" He looked down and looked back at me smirking.

"Yeah." I gave him a look of disbelief. "People tend to get out of the way a little quicker when there's a motorcycle right behind them." He chuckled. "Come on. Get on. I gotta park anyway." Shaking my head, I got on behind David. He turned his head and smiled back at me. "Nice gloves by the way." I laughed and tightened my grip on him even though I knew that he wouldn't be going as fast as he normally did. I just wanted to hold onto him.

"Thanks. Found them in my jacket pocket this morning." I smiled back at him. I hugged him a little closer and kissed his cheek. "You left them there on purpose didn't you?" David shrugged and started down the boardwalk. I let out a little laugh. David was right. People did tend to move a little faster when there was a motorcycle behind them. I rested my head on David's back as we slowly made our way to where David usually parked. There were three other bikes parked there and David took his usual spot at the end. We got off the bike and David took my hand.

"I didn't think the others were going to be here tonight." David muttered before turning back to me. "If they meet up with us, would you want to meet them? I mean you already met Marko but would you like to meet the other two?" I kissed David's cheek to get him to stop talking.

"I'd love to." I said. David visibly relaxed. "They're your family. You already met mine. Only seems right I meet yours." He cocked his head and gave a quizzical look.

"I have?" I smiled at his adorableness and nodded.

"You met (F/N). She's basically my sister." David nodded and gently pulled me in the direction of the games and rides that lined the boardwalk. "And you know Max. Who, for better or for worse, is basically my father." David squeezed my hand. "How is Marko? I haven't seen (F/N) and gotten to ask her how things went. Or even if she was still seeing Marko." David shrugged.

"Marko's Marko." He chuckled. "As far as I know, they are still seeing each other but if I know Marko, he's also got someone else he's seeing or planning on seeing soon." I laughed.

"That's (F/N) as well." The slight sadness was evident in my voice. "Always running from person to person. I kind of wish she would settle down with Marko. Even if just for the month."

"Then she is more like Marko than I thought." David sighed. "Maybe one day." He gently bumped into me. "Hey. Let's not dwell on these sad thoughts." I looked up at him. David started to swing our hands as we walked. "Tonight is about having fun."

"Depends on what your definition of fun is." I laughed at his childishness.

"Just you and me. Walking the boardwalk. Playing games. Going on rides." David smiled over at me. "Maybe do some shopping. Who knows. The night is ours!" Letting go of my hand, David threw his arm over my shoulder and pulled me as close to him as he could. My arm automatically went around his waist and tried to hold him as tightly as he was holding me. Pausing for a moment, David leaned down and kissed me. "Been waiting all day to do that." He whispered with a smile.

"Then what took you so long?" I giggled. David smirked and leaned down to kiss me again. He was interrupted by a loud whistle.

"Go David!" I recognized the voice as Marko's and let my head fall to David's shoulder with a laugh.

"Timing Marko." David huffed. "Timing." I looked up at David as he sighed and pulled me a little closer before turning us around.

"Hi (Y/N)!" Marko chirped and waved at me. I waved back and smiled when I saw that (F/N) was tucked under his arm. She smiled at me and I smiled back. There were two other boys following behind Marko who I didn't recognize. One of them had a kid with them and the other was holding hands with a girl.

"Hi David." (F/N) said as they got nearer. David gave her a smile and a nod in greeting before turning to the others that had joined us.

"(Y/N), this is the rest of my family." David pointed to the two boys. "The blond is Paul." Paul waved with his free hand. "The girl he's with is Star." She smiled at me. "The other one is Dwayne." He waved just like Paul had. "And the kid is Laddie." I watched as the little kid made eye contact with me before hurrying to hide behind Dwayne's leg. I smiled softly at him and gave him a small wave, hoping that he would eventually warm up to me.

"Nice to meet you all." I said a little shyly. I moved closer to David, who squeezed my shoulder in comfort. I saw the look on (F/N) face and felt my face heat up. She turned to Marko and whispered something in his ear that made him look at me before turning to her and nodding. "What's the plan for tonight?" I looked up at David, partly to wait for his response and partly so I didn't have to have Marko and (F/N) looking at me.

"Well, if you're up for it, we were all planning a night together on the boardwalk." David suggested. I nodded. He smiled at me before turning to the small group that had surrounded us. They all nodded their agreement. "Then let's go." David led the small group to the end of the boardwalk where the carousel was. Laddie pulled on Dwayne's pant leg, holding him back. Dwayne bent down to talk to him. I turned to talk to (F/N) while David bought our tickets and noticed the two were hanging back. David turned away from the booth and gave me a look. I nodded over to Dwayne and Laddie.

"Everything ok?" David's voice was flat, almost as if he knew that this would happen. Dwayne straightened up and picked up the boy hiding behind him.

"Yeah. Everything's fine. I'm just going to take Laddie to get some food." Dwayne said with a tight smile. David nodded and waved at the young boy as Dwayne led them to a food stand. David and I moved to the side and waited for the others. I looked over my shoulder at where we had last seen Dwayne and Laddie. Various reasons why they didn't want to join us ran through my head.

"Everything ok with you (Y/N)?" David's voice drew me out of my thoughts. I turned back to him and sighed. I took a second to collect my thoughts before looking up at him. His blue eyes were soft as he looked down at me. Where his voice was flat with Dwayne and Laddie, it was full of concern and wonder with me.

"Yeah." I shook my head. "I'm just wondering about Laddie..." I trailed off with another glance over my shoulder. David bowed his head with a chuckle.

"You're wondering if he hates you." David looked up at me with a gentle smile. I bit my lip and nodded. "He doesn't hate you. He just needs to..." David trailed off and looked over to where the two were eating. "Warm up to you. He's been through a lot. We try to take care of him as best as we can but it gets a little difficult." I squeezed his waist and laid my head on his shoulder.

"He's awfully young." I sighed. David rested his head on top of mine.

"He is." He agreed. He gently pressed a kiss to my temple. "Most of us ran away because our parents either didn't care enough or cared too much." I felt David move his head so he was talking into the top of my head. "But Laddie." He sighed. "Laddie ran away because his parents couldn't give two shits about him. And if they did, it was too much. When we found him, his clothes and hair were brown from the dried blood. He was covered in cuts and bruises and wouldn't let anyone touch him. He looked like he hadn't eaten in forever. Dwayne was the only one that could get through to him." I nodded and wrapped my other arm around David.

"Why Dwayne? Why not you or Marko or Paul?" I shifted so I was looking up at him with my chin on his chest. David let his forehead rest against mine.

"Dwayne basically bribed the kid." David chuckled. I gave him a confused look. "He had food. And like I said the kid looked like he hadn't eaten in forever." I smiled. "He came back to the resort with us because of Dwayne. Took forever for him to warm up to the rest of us. First it was Dwayne but he was still going to school. Laddie eventually warmed up to Paul. Dwayne and Paul could be siblings they're so similar. Then it was Marko." He smiled down at me.

"Wait." I hesitated. "What about you?" David nodded when he saw that I had caught on.

"He's still warming up to me." David's eyes shifted to Laddie and Dwayne sitting on a bench goofing around. "So it wasn't just you earlier. And he doesn't hate you." His eyes came back to meet mine. "He's just taking his time figuring out his place in our little band and I just added someone new to it." The look on his face could only convey sorrow and I knew I had to stop that before it turned into something else.

"Not just you." David's eyebrows furrowed and I moved my hands to his cheeks. "Marko brought (F/N) into this little band of merry men." David let out a laugh and hugged me tighter. "So don't say it's just us when we haven't seen the two of them interact yet."

"What would I do without you?" David took my hand as the rest of the boys and (F/N) joined us. We all got on the carousel. David tugged my hand and watched as everyone got on one of the animals. "I know I said we would spend the night with them but how about we ditch my family and make it just the two of us?" He whispered in my ear as we moved around between the animals.

"I say that's a great plan." I giggled and followed David's lead. He moved past Marko and (F/N) who winked at us. Marko crossed his heart and David smiled before pulling me off the ride. When we hit the concrete under the ride, David jumped the fence. He turned back to help me over and we took off running down the boardwalk. People turned their heads at our laughter and gave us dirty looks when we bumped into them. "Have a fun night Laddie! Nice to meet you Dwayne!" I yelled as we ran past the two still sitting at the bench.

"See you two at home!" David called his over shoulder. He had the biggest grin on his face that I had ever seen and apparently Dwayne wasn't used to it either. Laddie laughed at us, which caused David and me to share a look while Dwayne just raised his hand in an awkward goodbye. The night passed slowly as David and I made our way down the boardwalk. We played most of the games and failed miserably at them. It didn't matter because we were having fun. David and I finally stopped in front of the comic book store. We were out of breath from all the laughing we were doing. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed two boys watching me and David. I brushed it off thinking they were just a little wary of how David was dressed. It didn't matter because something had caught David's eye and he pulled me off in the direction of the dart game.

"David! Slow down! We've been running all night!" I laughed as David started fumbling in his pocket for his wallet.

"Sorry. It's just..." he finally pulled out his wallet and handed a five dollar bill over to the guy running the booth. He got five darts handed to him and turned towards me. "I'm really good at this game." He turned back towards the booth and pointed up at a bear hanging on the wall. "And that bear has your name all over it." I laughed as David squared up and got ready to throw the first dart. He winked over at me and popped the first balloon. I watched as he popped the other four before pointing at the bear again. "This is for you my dear." David passed the bear over to me before leading me away from the booth. I hugged the bear tightly before turning and engulfing David in a hug. He stumbled back slightly before hugging me back.

"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." I laughed as David started to blush. "This is perfect. You're amazing!" I kissed David's cheek before burying my head in his neck. He kissed the top of my head and just held me tightly for a few minutes.

"We should probably start heading back to the resort. The boys will be heading back soon too." David murmured. He gently pulled me with him back to his bike. "But first...." he smiled down at me with mischief in his eyes. We got on the bike and took off. Before I knew it, we were back at the cliff that we had our first date at. I smiled as David helped me off the bike. It was incredibly windy and I didn't expect to be nearly blown over. I held onto David as we stopped a ways away from the actual cliff. David took his long coat off and laid it on the grass. We sat down on the coat. David unzipped his leather jacket and held it open for me to get close to him before he covered me with as much of it as he could. I looked up at David and smiled when I saw the look he was giving me. He looked perfect even with the wind blowing his hair all over and the redness in his cheeks from the chill.

"This place is perfect." I said above the wind as I snuggled closer to him. His grip on me tightened and he rested his chin on my shoulder.

"It is." he agreed. We sat looking out over the beach in comfortable silence. David kissed me a few times before moving to stand up. "We should start heading back. Wouldn't want to keep the boys waiting for us." He helped me up before picking up his coat and putting it back on. We got on his bike and headed back to the resort. We still got back before the rest of the boys. David sat down in his wheelchair. I went to sit on the fountain like I had the first night that I was there but David grabbed my arm before pulling me into his lap. Laughing, I fell on his lap as gracefully as I could. David's laugh joined mine and he helped me sit more comfortably. Once I was situated, David kissed me. It was slow and sweet. We pulled apart before sharing a look and starting to kiss again. The few kisses quickly turned into a make out session.

"Lucky lucky David." Paul's voice echoed through the cave, causing the two of us to pull apart. I got off David's lap and situated myself on the fountain. "Don't stop on our account." David glared at Paul as he walked in with Star. They gave me a smile and wave as they came in and took what seemed to be their places. Marko soon followed with (F/N).

"So what did we miss?" Marko clapped David on the back as he walked over to where I was sitting. (F/N) climbed onto the fountain and took a seat not too far from where I was sitting. (F/N) sat in front of him and I sent a look at David that he returned.

"You didn't miss anything." David growled. (F/N) shared a look with Marko that was similar to the one I had shared with David.

"They were making out!" Paul sang as he came back into the main room. Star was nowhere to be seen but I shrugged it off. Marko busted up laughing and everyone seemed to tease David about it. "Yo where's Dwayne and Laddie with the food?" Everyone looked towards the entrance of the resort just as the two walked in.

"We have brought the food!" Dwayne called as Laddie held up a box that was easily bigger than him. I jumped up and quickly ran up to grab the box before he dropped it. Dwayne watched the interaction and I noticed his eyes shift over to David before falling back to me. Laddie handed over the box without arguing. He didn't say anything but he did give me a small smile as I helped him down the stairs. Raising an eyebrow, I handed Dwayne the box of food before heading back to my seat on the fountain. I didn't even notice that David had been watching the entire interaction with a smile on his face. He turned around and tried to hide his smile as I came into view. Dwayne passed out the food and took a seat near Paul. David's eyes fell on me as I took a box from Dwayne and opened it. I caught his eye and smiled at him.

"Bon appetit." Marko yelled before digging into his food, causing everyone to laugh. David and I shared a look again before starting to eat.
