Chapter 4
When David had stopped at a red light, I leaned forward slightly.
"Where are we going tonight?" David looked back over his shoulder and smirked down at me. The light turned green and David gunned the engine without giving me an answer. I shook my head as I enjoyed the ride and settled in against him. Max's words rang in my ears about being careful around David. And even though I knew Max meant well, I also knew that he was sometimes biased against the guys that would come into the video store. He saw me almost as a daughter and thus was incredibly protective of me. The thought of the argument that had happened between Max and the last guy that had left me for (F/N) made me close my eyes and move a little closer to David. I felt David shift a little and smiled as he quickly took his hand off of the handles and squeezed one of mine that was gripping onto his jacket. His hand was back on the handles just as quickly as it had left so I didn't even bother lifting my head from his back. We took corners at high speeds and I knew David was being careful because I was on the back of his bike but was also having the time of his life. We soon pulled up to where David was taking me and he cut the engine. He sat on the bike and I lifted my head.
"What do you think of the view?" It came out as a whisper but I heard him loud and clear. Sitting up a little straighter, I rested my chin on David's shoulder. I smelled the smoke before I saw the cigarette David had lit. He didn't turn around but put his hand back on top of mine. "Well?" I sighed and hugged him tightly.
"It's amazing." I whispered. David started to slip his fingers between mine and squeezed my hand as tightly as he could without hurting me. He started to slowly get off the bike and gently pulled me up with him. I let him tug me along, waiting to see where he was taking me. We followed the steps leading up but stopped before the steps started to go down. David stopped on the last step before the landing and I was on the landing.
"This is going to sound incredibly strange but I need to cover your eyes." David smiled and moved behind me. I bit my lip and slowly nodded as I wrung my hands. "Don't worry I won't let you fall." I let out a little airy laugh.
"It's ok David." I looked over my shoulder at him and nodded. "I trust you. I know you won't let me fall." David put his hand on my waist before thinking twice and grabbing my hand. He moved both our hands to my waist and used his other hand to cover my eyes. I giggled as he hesitant pushed me forward and caused the two of us to stumble. "Ok that's not going to work." I laughed out as David's laugh joined mine. He pulled me back before I tripped down the stairs and wrapped his arm around my waist.
"Maybe this would be easier." I nodded and moved a little closer to him before moving my hand to hold onto his arm rather than his hand. "Ready?" His voice was breathy and so close to my ear. Turning towards him, I reached up and gently pulled his hand away from my eyes. I looked down at his blue eyes and nodded.
"It's ok David." I reassured him. He nodded up at me. "I know you'll carry me if you have to. It will all work out." David took a deep breath before covering my eyes again and gently pushing me forward and down the stairs. There were a few stumbles here and there were many laughs. When we finally reached the final steps David pushed me forward another step so he could join me on the floor. "Can I look now?" David chuckled and squeezed my side.
"Not yet." I felt David move away from me. "Don't open your eyes yet." His voice was further away and I could hear him moving around. I was very tempted to open my eyes so I covered my face with my hands. After a while I couldn't hear David making noise and started wondering if he had left me standing there alone. "How about now?" I called out jokingly.
"Go ahead." David's voice made me jump. He must have been standing awfully close because his hands were on my forearms in a matter of seconds. "It's just me. Sorry." He chuckled softly and gently pulled my hands down. I opened my eyes to see David smiling right in front of me. "You ready?" His grin was contagious and I couldn't help but smile excited as I nodded. David took my hands excitedly. "Good." He led me down a few steps before letting go of my hands and gently pushing me forward. My eyes widened and my jaw dropped when I saw the room that we were in. Well if you could call it a room.
"What is this place?" I slowly moved through the room and couldn't figure out where to look. There was a fountain in the middle of the room, candles lining the entire room, a Doors poster hanging on the far wall, a wheelchair sitting by the fountain, curtains hanging from rafters, and so much more. David was slowly following me around as I explored the room.
"This was the hottest resort in Santa Carla back about eighty years ago." David perched himself on the wheelchair and motioned me over. I made my way back to him and sat on the edge of the fountain. "Too bad they built it right on top of the San Andreas fault. In 1906, when the big one hit San Francisco, the ground opened up and this place took a header into the crack." Chuckling, David spread his arms wide. "Now it's ours." Smiling David looking around what I realized was the resort lobby. "You wouldn't believe the cool stuff we've found in here." I laughed and leaned over to gently shove the wheelchair.
"Stuff like this?" David looked down and nodding laughing.
"Yeah. I still haven't figured out how this got here but it's here." He looked up at me and shrugged. "As far as I can tell no one was here when it went down. So we had to bring some of this stuff down ourselves. But some of it was already here."
"Like that?" I laughed as I pointed to the giant Jim Morrison poster. David looked behind him and laughed too.
"Yeah. That was one of ours." He smiled at me. "The curtains mostly too. Some were from various rooms we could get to. Others were brought in. The mattresses were all already here. We brought in the candles. Record player and radio too." David got up and put on the radio before looking around the lobby again. "It's not much but it's become home." With a shrug, David sat down next to me on the fountain.
"Home?" I questioned. David nodded and took a deep breath.
"Yeah. Me and the other boys you saw in the video store earlier live here." David explained. "We're kind of a group of lost boys really. We all ran away from home and ended up here." He looked out over the lobby and shrugged again. "In a way I guess we all end up here." David's eyes held a vacancy to them. I waited a beat before finally asking him the question that popped into my head.
"If you all ran away, why didn't you leave Santa Carla?" I asked. David seemed to snap out of his self-imposed trance. He focused on me and shrugged.
"Not sure. I guess we all just liked it here too much." David's eyes scanned my face before he gave me a little smirk. "Besides if we had, I wouldn't have ever spotted you in that video store and we wouldn't be here having this conversation now would we?" I smiled at him and blushed slightly.
"No. I guess we wouldn't." I responded. I blushed when I noticed how close David and I were. Even in the candlelight, I could see just how blue David's eyes were. "And I guess if we weren't having this conversation, we wouldn't...." My voice trailed off as we seemed to move closer to each other. His eyes fell down to my lips before snapping up to meet mine. My eyes started to close slowly and I felt David's hand move to cup my cheek. My eyes shut fully before our lips connected. It was a soft, sweet kiss that took my breath away. David's thumb moved back and forth on my cheekbone and I moved my hand to tangle in the hair at the back of his head. A few seconds later, we broke apart. I opened my eyes and started at David. His eyes were still closed and there was a small smile on his face. Smiling, I moved my hand from his hair to his cheek and smiled at how peaceful he looked. David slowly opened his eyes and his smile grew when he saw me smiling back at him.
"We wouldn't what?" he chuckled as he brushed a piece of hair out of my face. I blushed and shook my head. "What? I really want to know. We wouldn't what?" Laughing, I looked down at my lap.
"We wouldn't have done....."I laughed and nodded my head back and forth again. "That." Looking back up, I noticed the look that David was giving me. I blushed as I bit my lip and put my hand on top of his.
"What's that?" David couldn't take his eyes off of me and his smile grew. I shook my head at him again. "I'm being serious. What did we just do?" I couldn't stop my laughter but tried desperately to do so. David's quiet chuckle joined mine.
"We kissed." I whispered, hardly believing it myself. David's eyes lit up and he started to lean into me again.
"Yeah." He whispered back. "We kissed." I let out a breathy laugh before David pressed his lips to mine once again.
