Chapter 7

All three of them looked at each other and nodded. They pulled out their tranquilizers and assumed positions for a raid. Freddie kicked down the door and they all rushed the house.

"ZPD!" Judy shouted as she raised her tranquilizer.

They marched into the living room, stepping over a fallen table with a broken vase. In the living room there stood a tiger with a bag of money, as if he was attempting to flee. He froze up with his paws in the air.

"Wilfred Warner, you're under arrest for theft!" Nick stepped forward and pulled out his cuffs.

"No please! I-I just wanted the money... I need the money-" Wilfred begged desperately.

Nick cut him off by slamming the cuffs onto him and reciting, "you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be used against you in a court of law." Nick pushed him out of his house, into the car.

"Wow, what rookie." Nick said as he closed the car door. "That was too easy."

"You speak from experience?" Judy teased.

"Ha ha." Nick laughed sarcastically.

"You did good. You got all authoritative on him-I liked that." Judy winked at Nick.

"Oh? Want me to get authoritative with you-"

"Ahem!" Freddie loudly clears his throat, Judy and Nick look at him. "I called the precinct to get some more uniforms* to search the place, but-uh good job guys, I'll take him in. You guys should take your break now." He smiled.

"What? But it's 11:06!" Judy complained.

"I let Chief know Clawhauser, and us are going to be leaving early. 4:00." He smiled once more.

"Plenty of time to set up for the party!" Nick smirked. "Why should we take our break now?" Nick asked.

"You and Hopps still got to talk I imagine." Freddie walked over to the driver seat and opened the door. "Call me when you're done. I'll pick you guys up." He got in and drove off.

"Bye!" Judy waved. "Well... want to go to Sahara Sweets?" She smiled happily, holding Nick's paw.

"Sure thing Whiskers." Nick smiled back at her.

...

Nick and Judy entered Sahara Sweets. They sat at the table Nick and Freddie sat at last time, near the window. They sat at opposite ends of the table. The same waitress the night before approached them, beaming a smile.

"Hello! Can I take your orders?" Judy opened her mouth to respond.

Nick answered for Judy."Oh um, two cappuccinos, foamed, with a drop of sugar and two carrot muffins." He winked at Judy.

"Okay, I'll be back with your drinks." She walked away.

"Really? More coffee?" Judy asked.

"You don't want it? I thought you'd-"

"No-no-no! I do! I just didn't think you'd be up for that." She smirked shyly. Judy didn't like Nick buying things for her, she was grateful for it but didn't prefer doing it.

Nick shook his head. "Alright Juds, what do you want to talk about?" Nick pleasantly asked, leaning back in his chair.

Judy held Nick's paw across the table. "Hmm, when did you start liking me?" She asked.

"Uhh, not sure when. Over time I wasn't really sure of it. I guess I did like you after the missing mammals case, but last movie night was nice." Nick admitted openly. "I thought it was really... comfortable. I felt a spark." Nick said charmingly.

Judy blushed. "Oh... I-I liked that." She looked to the floor.

"How 'bout you?" Nick replied.

"After the missing mammals case. You had such a way to hang out with me that I really admired. I liked how you acted as an officer." Judy smirked.

"Well, girls love a mammal in a uniform." Nick joked.

Judy and Nick both laughed as the waitress came back with their drinks.

"Oh thank you!" Judy smiled.

The waiter walked back to the counter leaving the two alone for their conversation. Nick thoughtlessly thought of a brief and insane idea.

Nick lifted his coffee up to his lips."If you want Carrots, you-uh... could-um stay at my place if you want." Nick slipped in as he took a sip of his coffee.

Judy choked on her coffee. "Wh-what!"

"I... never mind, nothing." Nick changed his mind.

"No no no! Back it up, you want me to move in?" Judy beamed a huge smile. "Really Nick?"

"Yeah. I-uh, your apartment isn't the best, so you could stay with me-that is, if you want to!" Nick said almost assertively, but still worried to push.

"Are you kidding me? Nick I'd love to!" Judy cheered.

"Are-are you sure? You don't think we're rushing?" Nick asks nervously.

"I-I don't mind it! I really needed to get out of my apartment-this is the best way!" Judy cheered once more, pumping her fists in the air.

"Really? Great! How about we work out everything tomorrow?" Nick smiled at the adorable bunny in front of him.

"Sounds great! We could take half of the rent, we'd see each other everyday-well, more than usual. We could eat breakfast together and dinner, we could even-" Judy agreed.

As Judy went on about how they could spend their time together, Nick realized he had to tell Judy about his background search on Gideon. Starting off a relationship, Nick didn't want it to be based off lies. "Uh Judy?" Nick said ashamed.

"Yes Nick?"

"Do you think the spite of jealousy is a big deal?" Nick bit his lip.

"What do you mean?"

"If I were jealous of someone who hung out with you, would you hate me?" Nick cautiously asked.

"What, no! Depending on what you did then... I don't know." Judy shrugged. "Why?"

"Say if, I were to do a background search-hypothetically speaking-on a mammal who you were hanging out with-" During all this Judy's mouth hanged ajar.

"Nick! You did a background search on Gideon? How could you!" She reached across the table and smacked his shoulder.

Nick rubbed his shoulder gently. "I-I didn't like the looks of it! It seemed so suspicious that a fox, who was your bully, could automatically become all good and dandy with you!" Nick retorted.

Judy frowned. "I... I guess I didn't give you a lot to hold onto." Judy sighed. "I thought you'd trust me!" She pouted.

"I do!" Nick responded immediately, he could tell things were heading into the waterworks zone. "Judy, I'm sorry! I just... got so worried!" Nick confessed. "I-I know I'm an idiot! I-I just wanted to watch over you!"

Judy's frowned turned into a smile. "Yeah, you are an idiot." Judy commented.

"Wait, did you you just set me up?" Nick asked.

Judy had a delighted look on her face. "Maybe." Judy pulled out her carrot pen, playing it. "I-I know I'm an idiot!" It played over, Judy smirked.

"Oh come on!" Nick frowned.

"It's called a hustle sweetheart." Judy laughed, reciting her and Nick's run on joke. "But in all seriousness, I do appreciate how honest you are."

"Exactly!" Nick thoughtlessly agreed. Judy glared at him. "Sorry. I told you because I want you to know that I will be completely-one hundred percent, honest!" Nick placed his right paw on his heart.

Judy smiled, walked over to his side of the table and sat next to him to give him a peck on the cheek.

"Good." She held his paw. "So tell me, what'd you find out about him?" She asked with a devious smile.

"What?" Nick had a shocked expression.

"I just want to make sure!" She whined.

"Okay, uh-well nothing! He's a clean slate, all good Whiskers!" Nick smiled.

Judy sighed in relief. "Oh thank goodness. Wouldn't want to be friends with a drug addict or something." Judy laughed.

Nick laughed for a brief moment. "Wait, you're friends-like official friends?" Nick frowned.

"Oh Nick!" She shook her head. "Just deal with it!"

"Why did you invite him to movie night?" Nick asked, moving onto a greater subject.

"He's new in town, he could use some friends!" Judy retorted.

"But our friends? Why!"

"Nick... let it go." She sighed.

Nick grumbled, "Okay fine. Whatever."

"Nick, I'm serious. Let. It. Go." Judy said slowly yet seriously.

Nick frowned. "Judy, I will... if you promise that only you and I get to sit next to each other!" Nick smirked brightly, as if he thought he was the smartest fox in all of Zootopia.

"What? We always do-"

"No! Only us, no Gideon with us-and I get first pick on a movie!" Nick extended his index finger higher each time he extended the list. "Do we have a deal?"

Judy smiled. "We gladly do!" She cuddled closer to Nick and took a bite out of his carrot muffin.

"Hey! Eat your own!"

Judy smirked. "Share with me, you can have mine later. Besides, you owe me for the whole background search thing." Judy took another bite, rubbing it in front of Nick's face.

"Okay, fine." Nick took a bite out of the other side of the muffin.

"Hey Nick, check the time." Judy tried to speak with her mouth full.

"Alright." Nick pulled out his phone. "12:02."

"We need to head back, we gotta do our patrol." Judy said to Nick, having a moment of realization.

"Yeah I know, go on and call Fred. I'll take care of the bill." Nick smiled as they both stood up.
