Chapter 1
"NICK!"
Nick turned around from his desk to see Judy, a hyper active amazing bunny, beaming a huge smile. She held her phone in her hands, after hearing a beep come from it she shot out of her chair.
Ever since the case on the 14 missing mammals, they've been partners. Nick didn't mind it, he loved working with Judy. Going on patrols, arresting criminals, and working together in general. She changed him, which he was greatly thankful for. Since he joined the force, he was Judy's partner. He would always work by her and stay with her. He would ride with her to work, get her coffee in the morning, hang out with her on break, he would stay by her side. She didn't mind it either.
Nick smiled back at Judy. Thinking of a smug, quip, joke he can make to her. Judy wouldn't mind his jokes. In fact, those jokes became her nicknames. Names like Carrots, Whiskers, and Cottontail. Judy didn't really care, she loved them. She saw a nice, sweet fox. One who wasn't based off of the predator and prey book. She knew he played by his own rules, she liked that. Judy thought that their partnership was unique, different from other officers. They were just that close. Nick and Judy loved spending time with each other, they were friends. A unique friendship.
Judy's body shook excitedly, as if she was on a sugar high.
Nick raised a brow. "Hey Carrots, what's up-"
"I'm meeting an old friend!" Judy blurts out instantaneously. She immediately covered her mouth. "Sorry!"
Nick laughed. "It's alright Whiskers. So, who's the bunny?" He smirked.
Judy bit her lip. "Actually, it's not a bunny." She smiled. "It's a fox!"
Nick froze up. A fox? He thought. Nick would never have considered Judy to be friends with a fox, let alone any predator. He thought he was her first fox friend. But he knew Judy, she was optimistic, especially of the predator and prey story. Nick raised a brow, thinking about his next words carefully.
"A fox? Never would've imagined it." He chuckled.
Judy frowned. "Yeah, I know. But we weren't always... friends." Judy says slowly while swaying her body back and forth.
"Whatta you mean?" Nick smirked. He reached for his coffee taking a sip.
"He actually... bullied me at first." Judy shrugged.
"What!" Nick choked on his coffee. "Judy, are you insane!" He shouted.
Judy's ears went up. Nick stood atop his seat to see that every officer in the precinct within range of their office were looking at their cubicle, where the source of the shouting came from. After an awkward moment of staring, the mammals resumed their work.
"Nick, it's not a big deal-"
Nick scoffed, "it's a huge deal Carrots, how can you even trust him?" Nick lowered his voice, being wary of his previous stunt, he didn't want to draw attention once again.
"Calm down. I met him back when I quit, when I was at my folk's farm. He actually works with them, he makes blueberry pies." Judy smiled. Knowing Nick, he'd be interested with the berries part. "Nick, if it weren't for him, I would've never known about the night howlers."
Nick sighed. "Alright, if you're sure." Nick patted her shoulder, as Judy smiled and turned back to her desk. Her desk was right of Nicks, both of them had a corner cubicle.
Nick was often worried about Judy's open trusting nature. One of the main reasons he sticks with Judy is to make sure she doesn't get taken advantage of. Some parts of Zootopia, the mammals would take any chance they got for open-minded animals and especially cops. Nick turned back to his computer, clearing out all his windows.
He took another sip of his coffee. "So, when ya meeting him?" He asks, still remaining eye contact with his computer.
Judy walked over to her desk and sat down. "Oh, around 4:00 we're going to meet at Sahara Sweets. You know, the coffee shop in Sahara Square?" She nodded, smiling brightly at Nick.
"Yes I do Juds, I get our coffee there." Nick nodded, whilst biting his lip. "Tell me about this..." Nick stops, hinting at the fact Judy hasn't mentioned the fox's name.
"Oh! Gideon!" Judy responds enthusiastically.
"Okay. Tell me about this Gideon." Nick raises his brows at Judy.
"Well, not much to say really. I know that he's moved to Zootopia, but that's the whole point of this meet. I've kept in contact with him after I quit. But I want to get to know him, also thank him. He not only helped me solve the case, he also was the reason why I was encouraged to be a cop." Judy smiles once more.
"Ooh! Inspiration! Guess I've got him to thank for having a Cottontail around." Nick says smugly.
"I'll give him your thanks." Judy winks at him.
"Would ya please?" Nick chuckles.
Judy laughed quietly. She turned back to her desk, opening her drawers. Her expression changes to a confused one.
"Hey Nick, do you know where my phone is?"
Nick averts his eyes from his computer back to Judy. "Uh, no." He raises a brow.
"I swear, I had it in my hands." She shakes her head.
"Tsk tsk Juds, your memory isn't what it used to be." Nick shook his head as he turned his head back to the computer.
"Nick, did you see me with my phone here?"
"Nope. Check the break room." Nick points to the break room.
"Huh... weird." Judy shrugs and walks off to the break room, muttering to herself confused.
Little did Judy know whilst Nick patted Judy's shoulder he managed to swipe her phone without her noticing just as she turned around. Nick shook his head, "Sorry Whiskers." Nick knew this was a huge deal within their friendship. He may be a sly fox, but he promised Judy he would never invade her privacy without her consent. He pressed the home button, turning the phone on. Nick didn't know Judy's password, but that isn't what he needed. He looked at the message that Judy received. "Guess what? Cleared my schedule. I'm free Hopps." Nick looked at the name, "Gideon Grey."
"Gideon Grey." Nick muttered to himself.
He now knew how to spell the name, the full name, without getting Judy suspicious. Nick walked over to Judy's desk, opening a drawer on the left and tossing the phone in, burying it under files. Nick wanted it to look believable. He walked back to his seat, and opened up a background search on Gideon Grey. As he typed the name, he heard: "Nick, it wasn't there!"
He immediately turned off his monitor. "Darn." He snapped his fingers. "Double check your desk." He points with his thumb toward the desk.
"Oh no, you've gotta help me too Nick." Judy grabs his hand and pulls him towards her desk. "I don't want to be late!"
Nick nodded. "Okay, I'll help." He walked over to the right set of drawers. Thinking logically, he'd want Judy to find the phone. Him finding it would look suspicious. Judy dug into the first drawer, moving the papers. Nick had placed the phone in the second drawer. Judy closed the first, moving onto the second she looked at the files.
"Wait a minute..." She mutters.
She grabbed the phone and cheered, "~Found it!~" She shouted in sing song.
"Well well, Zootopia's greatest detective has solved the case of the missing phone!" Nick claps his hands.
"Thank you, thank you. I try!" Judy bows.
She looks up at Nick and smiles, then turns on her phone and gasps.
"Oh darn, it's 3:36! I gotta go meet Gideon!" Judy grabs her coat and runs out of their cubicle, putting on her coat as she ran. "Bye Nick! See ya tomorrow! Remember, we need to talk about tomorrow night!"
Nick waved goodbye. "Yeah I know. Can you meet me at my place at 6:00?"
"Yeah, obviously!" She shouted as she ran out of the room, closing the door behind her.
