Chapter 47: Tale of Celest Part 2

Time had passed, and Layla grew to adapt to her new home. Firstborne eventually warmed up to her a bit and allowed her to go outside with the young dragons. Layla spent her days playing with the young dragons right outside the nest as they awaited for Svern and his squad to return from battle.

They heard a roar echo through the sky, the young dragons became excited and looked up to the sky. They jumped around and made little squeaky roars in response before Firstborne roared back the loudest. Layla looked up towards the sky as a large black dragon came into view with his squad behind him.

"Svern!" Layla calls out excitedly as she raised her hand to the sky.

The dragons began landing and their children ran to greet their parents. Layla stood still as Svern came down and landed in front of her.

"Welcome home," Layla smiles.

Svern lowered his head and Layla touched her forehead to his. Firstborne stood behind Layla as she watched the two. Svern raised his head to look at his mother.

"How did it go?" Firstborne asks.

"Clean sweep," Svern replies.

"Good..." Firstborne replies before looking down at Layla. "I hope you're still taking my advice. Svern"

"Mother," Svern puffs smoke out "leave it alone."

"I only wish for you not to go through the same heartbreak I did," Firstborne responds.

Svern uses his nose to push Layla towards the nest. Layla began walking to their room with Svern behind her.

"I do not meddle in your affairs mother," Svern says "do not meddle in mine."

Firstborne looks back at the other dragons as Svern and Layla return to their room where Svern transforms back into his human form. Layla immediately hugs him and he returns the hug.

"Was it hard?" Layla questions worriedly "Did you get hurt?"

"I'm perfectly fine my love," Svern replies as he puts his hand on her cheek "just.. tired."

"Do you wanna see what I worked on while you were gone?" Layla asks excitedly "Will that cheer you up?"

"Very much so," Svern smiles.

Layla turns away from him and lifts her hands in the air. Gold particles surround the room before forming a sphere and Layla puts her hands to her side.

"Let's go," Layla grabs his hand.

Svern and Layla walk into the sphere and they were suddenly in a whole different world. They were in a grassy field that radiated light with green trees. Nothing but a small field and no vision of their old world.

"It's still small, but the realm is ever expanding." Layla tells him with a gleam in her eyes.

"That's an Oni of creation for ya," Svern chuckles as he puts his hand atop her head "it's beautiful, just like you."

Svern turns and looks at the sky.

"We should leave now before I ruin it," Svern says.

"You wouldn't ruin it," Layla pouts "it's not complete without you."

"My darkness is not meant for a world as pure as this one Layla," Svern tells her with a sad look "darkness will only lead to disaster."

"That's not true," Layla argues as her cheeks puff out in irritation "You take that back mister."

"Layla," Svern sighs "lets not fight again."

"No!" Layla shouts at him as she grabs his hand "A friend of mine once said, light cannot exist without darkness. I- I cannot exist without you, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you either. So don't you ever say you'd ruin something of mine!"

"...I cannot win against you." Svern says before he kisses her "Thank you."

"Hehe," Layla smiles "let's get out of here before your mother notices."

-

At night, Svern slept in his dragon form with Layla curled up under his wing. She smiled as she snuggled against him, the warm of a dragon would beat a campfire any night in her books. They were however awoken by a loud alarming roar from Firstborne.

"Svern!" Layla panicked.

Svern got to his feet immediately and roared at her.

"I still can't speak draconian!" Layla responds.

Svern carefully used his teeth to pick up Layla and place her on his back as he left his room. Layla held onto his scales as they entered the den where all baby dragons were being rushed from the nest.

"What's happening mother?!" Svern asks.

"Those damn Oni, this is all your fault!" Firstborne responds as she turns to him angrily "Because you brought her here! She's told them where we were!"

"That's impossible mother," Svern says in shock "Layla wouldn't do that!"

"Get rid of her quickly, we have to relocate!" Firstborne tells him.

"What do you mean get rid of her?!" Svern questions angrily.

"Throw her into the abyss, the volcano, anywhere!" Firstborne responds.

"I won't do that," Svern states.

"You're not thinking straight!" Firstborne shouts "She is the reason we're in danger! She's the reason we may loose many tonight!"

"I- I don't care!" Svern shouts.

"What?!" Firstborne angrily walks towards him.

"If you so blatantly want to blame someone, blame yourself and your negligence." Svern tells her. "You never once cared about my happiness! Finally for once I have someone that makes me happy, something worth fighting for! And you expect me to throw her away like it's nothing!"

"I expect you to do it because I told you to, for the safety of our dragons." Firstborne responds "You've always put this tribe first, this time should be no difference."

"She didn't even do it!" Svern argues "She was with me at all times, if she wasn't with you! I won't do it!"

"I refuse to let you put everyone in danger so you can keep your pet." Firstborne turns away from him.

"Then I'll leave," Svern says. "Then your precious family won't be harmed."

"Excuse me?" Firstborne turns back to face him "You ungrateful child, I have sacrificed everything for you. Now you choose to defy me, your mother, when I'm only trying to keep you safe?! That girl will only bring misfortune as all Oni's do."

"This war has made you senile old woman," Svern says "either she comes with us, or I'll leave."

"Then leave," Firstborne responds.

Svern takes a step back before angrily taking flight through the chaos of dragons. They flew away from the scene as they watched the Oni army advancing towards the army of dragons waiting to fight.

"Svern wait!" Layla calls out "What's happening? What about your family?"

Svern continued flying through the fly until they were out of range of the battle commencing. Svern landed in the forest the two had first met, where Layla slid off his back.

"Svern," Layla approached him.

Svern turned away from her and she looked surprised.

"Hey, talk to me." Layla says softly. "What happened?"

Svern hesitated before turning into his human form, he faced Layla with tears in his eyes before she embraced him in a hug.

"It's because of me isn't it?" Layla asks softly.

"No," Svern wrapped his arms around her tightly "I chose to leave."

"The Oni," Layla looked off towards the dragon's nest.

"They are not our concern Layla." Svern turns her back to him "You always talked about wanting to leave, let's do it."

"What?" Layla asks confused.

"Let's leave this place, go to the place we want to call home." Svern grabs her arms "Please.. I want to leave this place. Nobody here.."

"Alright," Layla put her hand on his cheek cutting him off  "let's go."

Svern took Layla's hand as she raised a hand to the sky. Gold partials covered the forest, many more then in the next, before they came together creating a gold sphere that lit up the forest, radiating into the sky. The two looked at each other before walking into the sphere together, before it disappeared, leaving nothing behind.
