Partners in Crime

Their story together starts like most relationships: two lonely people meeting with the same thought in mind. Dang, they can shoot. Shoot their shot? No, in this instance, these two individuals are talking, or rather, thinking about the other's ability to fire their guns. In the right place at the right time, Eleanor Reese and Connor King were strangers robbing the same bank at the same time. Who could have guessed that when going to the bank that day, they would be caught in not just one, but two hold-ups?

"Hands in the air!" Could be heard from two voices that had never spoken together before. Fate brought these two together, guns held up in one hand and large black bags in the other. They looked across the teller table and the surprise in their eyes swiftly lead to cheeky grins and the same thought.

Together.

Both were dressed as if they were on their way to a gala. But instead of bringing home a slight headache from champagne and many voices, these two planned on bringing home the green. Little did they know that this Saturday the 15th, a normal day of robbing, would be different than every other day of their lives. Because not only did they leave with heavier pockets, but they didn't go home alone.

Since that fateful day, Eleanor and Connor spent their lives engaging in the best couple therapy: robbery. It was a good way to strengthen a relationship, between the planning and stressing, it helps build trust. During the couple's therapy, they loved to look their best. In suit and dress, they would knock on rooms of famous hotels in their city, taking what was theirs and leaving bodies and the lingering scent of Eleanor's vanilla perfume.

Personally, their favorite places to rob were adorable little boutiques. Eleanor's eyes always sparkled in the presence of shiny little baubles. And many of the small shops in their city were filled to the brim with jewelry, gems, and shiny trinkets. With little charms, Eleanor was happy and as with many healthy relationships, with the happiness of one, comes the happiness of their partner.

Life was never better for the happy couple. Stealing was always for pleasure and never the money. Although it was a nice bonus. The thrill of living on the edge is what kept Eleanor and Connor committing crimes as recklessly as possible. Thieving as bystanders walked by. Holding their guns high as the sun shone brightly. The smell of gunpowder and the sound of squealing tires is what kept them thrilled.

As one could imagine, keeping up with a high-stakes life can get exhausting so whenever the couple needed a break, their go-to vacation was any resort near the ocean far from the smokey skies and sewer stink. Surrounded by nature, it was a special kind of fun. Relaxing in the hot tub of an actor's suite, his limp body taking a long dip with them.

This is not saying that home life was bad. In fact, their relationship was stronger than most marriages in America. Unlike what you are probably thinking, they do not live in a hole, their home smells like cinnamon, not dirt. This is thanks to Connor's addiction to cinnamon rolls. And because Eleanor loves her husband more than life, she learned how to make cinnamon rolls. It saved them trips to the bakery, although stealing sugary goods was always a good time with their cute little shops and charming color palette. Connor does say, though, that Eleanor makes the best cinnamon rolls around, which is why there is always a batch in the oven.

Their hideout/ forever home was a cookie-cutter house, one that looked like all the rest. As flashy as the couple was, this was a part of their life they liked to keep out of the limelight. So, they made sure their home didn't stand out. Beyond their armory of guns and knives hiding under the maple wood flooring, the only difference from the neighbors is the couple's cleanliness. According to Eleanor, their house was much cleaner than their neighbor who had an army of messy, loud children. Not that they were against children. Eleanor and Connor would love children someday. But for now, their only babies will be the cinnamon rolls and firearms.

Eleanor and Connor loved their life together and enjoyed every moment, but after a good heist came some of their favorite moments. On their ridiculously large television, which was most definitely 'borrowed', the lovers play an action film and would recite their cheesy couple saying they stole from their favorite romance/crime film.

"Together, forever, Ellie love."

"Beyond forever."

It never failed to raise heartrates and calm minds. Allowing the couple to relax, it was a time when they could enjoy each other's company in a quiet environment. Well, except the noise from the gunfire exploding out of the screen.

One would say that the two lovers shared the perfect, most blessed life. If criminals could be blessed, that is. Cinnamon rolls in the oven, Connor and Eleanor were seated around their cozy dining room table, teacups in hand and old-fashioned paper map on the table. In the past month, a new leather shop had opened up. Albeit small, it was booming and rolling in the cash. It was also the lovers' next stop.

Chamomile-warmed stomachs and the plan-excited minds. Simple enough, the two partners in crime would enter at closing time on this cheery Tuesday and leave cloaked in darkness but with bright expressions. The lovers dressed in their fancy garb: a formal suit for Connor (Eleanor loved seeing him in a bowtie) and a floor-length, dark blue number for Eleanor. Conspicuous? Definitely. But what fun is life without risks?

Our criminals made their merry way to the new leather shop. The bell rang. The lovers entered. Guns were raised. But not just our criminals' guns. The lone store owner didn't plan to go down without a fight. Remington against his shoulder, the leather store owner slid his hand under the counter. Our lovers stood still; guns pointed at the lone man. The scene was frozen in time. Nobody moved until the sound of sirens could be heard. The couple had never run into resistance in the form of a rifle.

"He sounded the alarm." Eleanor whispered.

"If the heat comes close to burn us, then we're burning this place to the ground." Connor lifted his firearm higher.

"This is the police department. We've got the place surrounded. Put your weapons down." A megaphone made the voice fuzzy.

The two lovers were trapped. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, and in this case, between a gun, and more guns. Guns raised still, the officers repeated the order. Eleanor and Connor poised their guns toward the squad cars. "You'll never take us alive. We swore that death would do us part."

As the lovers prepared for a gunfight, the leather store owner took his leave, sneaking out the back and leaving the duo to face the police force alone. Eleanor and Connor waited for the police to make the first move and when the officers realized the villains had no intention of backing down, all hell broke loose. Lead filled the sky and the ground cried out, flooded with the officers' lifeforce. Against all odds, the lovers stood their ground and seemed to be dealt the winning hand.

Although in the chaos, the sound of metal meeting flesh was a common occurrence, the yelp that followed a certain one struck differently. Surrounded by broken glass from the store windows, our criminals stood hiding behind shelving units, one of them injured. Connor's firearm touched the ground for only a moment before being swiftly picked up again, only by his right hand this time.

Gore was soaking the sleave of Connor's left shoulder. With a dozen more officers and only two villains, the lovers knew the end was near. Though their gallivanting around town had given them the occasional gunfight, Eleanor and Connor were not blind to the severity of the situation. Determination was set in both of their gazes and they silently agreed, they wouldn't leave this life without making a lasting impression.

Connor hoisted up his firearm; his left hanging uselessly, only being used to water the carpet. Eleanor straightened her own gun and together the lovers stepped out from behind the shelves and into the fray. Many more officers met the fate of their fellow comrades, but their losses were not the only ones.

With calm minds, the lovers stood firm in their last crime. Taking down as many as they could before they themselves closed the curtain on this finale. Guns still firing nonstop, Connor took his love's hand with his left hand. The couple was bombarded with bullets and gained the appearance of swiss cheese, bones cracked, and muscles torn. In their last moments, all that came to mind was their movie quote:

"Together, forever."

"Beyond forever, Ellie love."

With their last declaration, they clung to each other as their bodies hit the ground. The lovers breathed their last, knowing that their names would go down in history. They knew that their love could not stay buried. And it didn't. Though their mortal bodies breathed no more, the couple stayed together, beyond forever as they promised. Lovers and partners in crime.
