Chapter 3 History Repeats
Rogers first met Kassidy a couple years ago when tracking down a serial killer, required reinforcements, Kassidy was a detective for the south Seattle precinct and she was a damn good detective if one could get past her snarky commentary and overall attitude, and of course the fact that she slept with him for weeks, let him think they were something more than a fling and then left him in a hotel room with a stupid note.
No..She's still a good Detective, don't let your personal feelings try to change that. Rogers thought to himself.
Rogers had hardly seen Kassidy Cole since they worked together two years ago. There were glimpses of her in the News paper, and every now and then, her and Weaver would have lunch together but she wouldn't say a word to him..maybe it was guilt, maybe he was looking too far into it. Weaver often got little gag gifts in the mail from Kassidy. One of them however had ended up on Rogers desk by accident and the second he opened it, there was an explosion of glitter everywhere. He was still finding pieces of it on his desk, and on him.
Kassidy blew a blonde curl out of her gray eyes and gave him a cheeky grin.
"Hello there partner." She said and kicked her boot clad feet up on his desk.
"Temporary partner." Rogers corrected her and pushed her feet off his desk. "Weaver's desk is over there." He said and nodded at the other desk in the room.
"But I like this one. It sparkles, just like your personality." Kassidy flashed another grin as she moved her index finger across the desk picking up leftover glitter.
"Get out of my chair Cole." Rogers sighed.
"Someone is a grump this morning." Kassidy said in a sing-song tone before getting up from his chair and walking over to the other chair in the room to sit down.
Rogers sat down in his chair and pulled a case file from his desk and started looking over it.
Kassidy scooted herself across the room to his desk. "What are we working on?" She asked as she picked up the stress ball from his desk and tossed it up and down to herself.
"I'm looking for anything I might have missed on this recent string of break ins around the Height's. I haven't a clue what you are doing." Rogers said.
"Break-ins? Things are getting kinda boring on your side of Seattle, Detective."
"Peaceful you mean? No ones getting killed, that's a good thing Cole."
"I didn't mean it like that you grump." Kassidy sighed and rolled her eyes. "Let me see the file."
"I've got this. In fact, I've got everything pretty well handled here on my own, so you can go back to your own cases in your own sector and leave me to mine." Rogers suggested.
"Weaver seemed to think I needed to be here, so here is where I stay until he recovers, or says otherwise." Kassidy shrugged. "So.. let me help."
Rogers sighed and pushed the case file to her. Kassidy started looking it over, pulling out the photos of the suspects.
"Have you actually questioned any of these people or.. Are you just guessing?" Kassidy asked.
"What makes you say that?" Rogers scoffed. Kassidy pushed a picture to him.
"I Just arrested that guy a few weeks ago. For.. get this: A string of break-ins."
"Last I checked he and his gang lived over here in my sector Cole."
"Last you checked was likely two months ago. They moved bases. Now.. his brother on the other hand, still runs a small operation over here on your side of town Detective, but I see no picture of him in your little file." Kassidy smirked and sat back.
Rogers narrowed his eyes.
"Forgive me if I haven't been looking too far into this this week with my partner being shot and all." Rogers practically seethed, she was getting under his skin. Kassidy frowned.
"I'm sorry.. I was just-"
"Just what Cole? What exactly are you trying to do here?" Rogers asked and stood up putting his hands on his desk leaning in.
"I didn't mean to offend you James, honestly." Kassidy said.
"Why do you think you can come in here, and tell me how to do my job, when you were handed evidence, after evidence that your partner was a murderer and you STILL refuse to believe it! You're still looking into a solved case from two years ago!" Rogers barked.
Kassidy stood up.
"And you're still an asshole." She said. "I'll let Weaver know you've got this." She mumbled. Her gray eyes were misty and she sniffled as she turned away from him and walked out of the office.
Rogers felt instant regret. He knew that case was not meant to be used against her in some petty argument. That case almost destroyed her and it was still affecting her to this day.
"Kass.. wait!" He sighed and went after her but she had already stormed out of the precinct and was getting into her new Firebird she had parked out front that he had clearly missed coming in the building.
"You going after her or what?"
Rogers looked at the officer working the desk.
"Do I look like I fancy being run over?" Rogers asked. "I'll give the lass some space and then I'll go after her, besides I know where she'll be." He sighed.
Rogers gave Kassidy a couple hours to herself, which gave him some time to look into the younger brother of the gang leader she had mentioned earlier, and it turned out, she was right. So he figured it would only be right if she were there when the arrest was made. As much as she hurt him, and as much as she got under his skin, he knew what he said was way out of line and he was at least going to attempt to apologize to her.
Rogers looked at his watch, it was noon, so he knew Kassidy would be getting her second, (or third) coffee of the day at the starbucks around the corner from her precinct. At least that was her routine 2 years ago surely it hadn't changed because Cole was a caffeine addict.
Rogers looked in the window of the coffee shop, and sure enough, Kassidy was leaning against the counter talking to the young Barista, Blaire. He opened the door and stepped in. Kassidy looked at him and scoffed before stepping away from the counter and pulling out her phone.
Blaire looked at Rogers and crossed her arms.
"Should I spit in his coffee Kass?" She asked.
" Uh..I can hear you." Rogers said.
"Please don't tell me you spit in people's coffee Blaire. We talked about this" Kassidy said.
Blaire sighed.
"Just because we don't like someone, doesn't mean we should spit in their food or drink." Blaire said and a mocking tone and turned around to make Rogers his usual.
"Haven't seen you in while." She muttered.
Kassidy looked at Rogers and raised an eyebrow.
"I..Uh.." Rogers stammered.
"Theres a starbucks on your side of town, Rogers.. Actually, theres one on every block its Seattle." Kassidy said. "So..why come to this one?"
Rogers was absolutely not about to tell her that he sometimes came here, hoping to accidentally bump into her...this was about 6 months into her ditching him in the hotel room before he gave up on her all together of course.
"I had other business over here." Rogers shrugged.
"Mmhm." Blaire said and passed him his coffee.
Rogers paid for the coffee and narrowed his eyes at Blaire.
"Anyways.." He sighed and looked at Kassidy "I came here this time to apologize." He said and took a sip of his coffee expecting only his usual americano with a splash of cream. This time however, he got Americano and a dash of black pepper. Rogers made a face.
"Did you put pepper in my coffee?" He accused and glared at the Barista.
Blaire shrugged.
Rogers turned his gaze to Kassidy.
"I only told her not to spit in people's food and drink." Kassidy shrugged.
"So we'll forget that tampering with something someone is going to consume is illegal." Rogers muttered.
Kassidy sighed and rolled her eyes.
"Make him a new coffee Blaire, sans pepper. I've gotta go. I'll be back around 5 for another fix." Kassidy said. "Be good."
"I'm always good.." Blaire grinned.
"Debatable." Rogers sighed as he was given his new, coffee. "Cole, wait!" He said as Kassidy was already out the door and rounding the corner.
"Better hurry dude, she's zoomin." Blaire said.
Rogers hurried out of the coffee shop and after Kassidy.
"Kassidy, wait!" He huffed. Kassidy turned around with her nose in her phone.
"What?" She asked. Her brows furrowed in concentration at her screen as she furiously swiped up.
"I wanted to apologize Kassidy. What I said was out of line." Rogers said.
"Mmhm. Kinda." She muttered.
"Look, I'm not entirely settled on the idea of us working together again." Rogers started and tilted his head to the side watching her on her phone.
"Hah Hah! Got you you little bastard!" She cheered and grinned.
"I'm..sorry what?" Rogers asked.
Kassidy showed him her phone.
"I caught a shiny squirtle."
"I haven't the faintest idea what that is.." Rogers mumbled.
"Pokemon Go?" Kassidy asked and then sighed at Rogers' growing confusion. "Nevermind.." She said and tucked her phone back into her pocket.
"You were saying?" She asked.
"Right.. As I was saying, I'm not fond of the idea of us working together again and I'm not sure exactly why Weaver insisted on you being his replacement but that doesn't excuse me saying what I said, I know what that case did to you Kassidy.. And I'm sorry." He said sincerely.
Kassidy looked like she was thinking for a minute and then shrugged.
"It's okay." She said and turned back to walk towards her precinct.
"Wait.. thats it?" Rogers asked.
"Well what did you expect?" Kassidy asked.
"I don't know really... I guess. Just.. are you sure you are okay?"
"Yup." Kassidy replied. "Therapy does wonders Rogers, you should try it." She said and walked into the precinct.
"Why am I still bloody chasing this woman?" Rogers mumbled to himself and followed her.
"So.. you were right, about my break in case that is. It's the brother. I was actually going to go make the arrest..if you wanted to come." He said.
"You actually want me there, or do you just feel bad for what you said, and this will make you feel better?" Kassidy asked and picked up her mail in the box outside her office before walking in.
Rogers followed her in and looked around. Wills desk had been moved out entirely and there didn't appear to be any sign of her having a new partner. He looked over at Kassidy shuffling through her mail. Her eyes widened at an envelope and she quickly tucked it into her desk and looked up at him noticing him watching.
"Everything okay?" He asked.
"Yeah. Fine." Kassidy nodded. "So.. drug dealing, thieving brother guy. You gonna go get him or what?"
"Just come with me Cole, because if you don't I'm going to have to hear about it from Weaver and-"
"Nobody wants to listen to that." Kassidy finished for him. "I told him, you and I working together again wasn't a good idea."
"Aye, thats the first thing we can agree on today." Rogers sighed. Being here in this office was actually giving him a lot of painful memories he did not want to revisit.
"You can come with me, or you can stay here, but I'm going to go." Rogers said and turned around walking out of the office.
Rogers almost made it to his car before he heard footsteps behind him. He turned around and looked at Kassidy.
"So.. I'm bored." She shrugged and shifted her gaze to the ground. "Lets go catch a burglar."
That same dangerous magnetic pull she felt to Rogers when she first met him, was back like it never even left to begin with.
"Alright then, get in." Rogers said and scratched behind his ear nervously.
"Uh no, I figured out who the bad guy is, I get to drive." Kassidy said and held her hand out. "Thems the rules."
"Then drive your own car, Cole." Rogers said with a death grip on his keys.
Kassidy pouted.
Rogers sighed and cursed under his breath.
"Just be gentle with her. I know what you did to your old car."
"You keeping tabs on me Rogers?" Kassidy smirked.
It wasn't exactly keeping tabs, it had happened not long after they solved the case, Kassidy wasn't in the best state of mind, everyone knew it and the Seattle press really liked to get right into the middle of it. So when she fell asleep at the wheel and wrapped her car around a light post of course, 2 years ago that was front page news.
"Easy to do when you're front page news, Cole." Rogers said and handed over his car keys. "Keep your eyes on the road, and not looking for sparkly whootles." He said.
Kassidy blinked at him.
"Shiny. Squirtles. Rogers, Jesus Christ you're ancient." She shook her head and got into his car.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple days later.
Rogers was sincerely wondering what on Earth possessed him to let Kassidy Cole continue working with him, Since he walked into his office the other say and saw her sitting there, it reopened old wounds and continuing to work with her was like pouring salt into them.
Rogers morning had started with a headache, Tilly had a bad morning, not wanting to go to school so he had been running late and Kassidy didn't seem to be helping that headache. He found himself getting irritated by every little thing she did or said today.
Kassidy practically ran to keep up with Rogers as he strode down the sidewalk.
"Do you really have to walk so fast? I haven't even had my morning coffee." Kassidy whined. Rogers rolled his eyes and slowed down enough for her to keep up with him. "We're going to get the coffee now. Must you whine?" He asked in a grumble.
"We could have just as easily drove to get the coffee you know.. in that really nice car of yours in the parking garage. Or you know, mine." Kassidy said.
"I like to walk, its not that far you could have just as easily stayed back at the precinct...I know your coffee order anyways."
"Aw, you remembered?" Kassidy asked.
"Its not a complicated order, Cole. Black, just like your soul." Rogers said and gave her the only smirk she'd seen on his scowling face this morning.
"Ah.. so thats whats got you in such a mood. You're still angry. Its been two years Rogers." Kassidy scoffed.
"Forgive me for having feelings, not that you would know what those are." Rogers returned her scoff.
"Oh, please.. you knew exactly what we were. You had to." Kassidy said and walked around in front of him, walking backwards.
"Apparently, I didn't have a bloody clue." Rogers said and glared at her, it was probably the coldest look he'd given her all morning. She honestly thought that they both had an understanding that what happened two years ago was nothing but a heat of the moment fling. "I'm not someone whos hard to get over Rogers." She shrugged and swallowed thickly.
Oh, yes you are. Rogers thought. Being the very well trained detective he was, he instantly picked up on a difference in her demeanor, and the brief flash of fear in her eyes. Maybe she wasn't exactly the heartless banshee he thought she was. He sighed heavily and went to speak, but his cellphone rang.
"Rogers." He said.
"And Cole!" Kassidy said standing on her toes behind him. Rogers rolled his eyes and stepped away from Kassidy.
"What? Okay, send me the location." Rogers said and hung up his phone. "Lets go." He said and took off in a run back towards the precinct.
"Whats up?" Kassidy asked as she jogged after him.
"Theres been a murder." Rogers said.
------------------------------------------
Rogers got out of the car, and looked at the house that was taped off. Something about this was already not setting right, maybe it was that this was the first murder he'd worked in a while, or maybe it was the fact that he was working it with her. Kassidy got out of the car and the two of them walked to the scene.
"Rogers." One of the officers nodded and then looked at Kassidy skeptically.
"I'm with him." Kassidy said.
"Debatable." Rogers mumbled and stepped under the police tape and kept walking.
Kassidy glared and opened her leather jacket and flashed her badge that was hanging on her hip to the officer on the scene. He stepped aside and Kassidy stepped under the police tape and caught up with Rogers who was walking with a woman from forensics. She had brown hair that was tipped in red.
"Rubes!" Kassidy grinned.
"Hey Kass. You working this case too? You two?" Ruby said and gave Kassidy a knowing eyebrow raise. Rogers looked between the two of them and scoffed.
I was important enough to tell your friends about me...but not enough to stay? He thought.
"Cole is more so assisting me." He shrugged. Kassidy put her hands on her hips.
"Assisting you? Please. I don't care what your personal problem is with me, but you damn well better respect my work ethic, and my abilities as a Detective." Kassidy glared. Rogers narrowed his eyes at her and stepped forward to respond.
"Guys. Dead dude inside, murder case, Remember?" Ruby sighed. "I love working with the two of you individually the two of you together is a damn nightmare." She mumbled.
"My apologies Ruby. How bad is it?" Rogers asked.
"Its...gruesome, the new guy puked."
"Wonderful." Rogers sighed.
"Thats...not all..theres more." Ruby said and frowned.
"What is it?" Kassidy asked.
"You'll see." She said and led the way.
As soon as the trio stepped inside, they were hit by a blast of cold air.
"Jesus its like a fridge in here." Kassidy said through chattering teeth and zipped up her jacket.
"Guys been dead for a couple days..whoever killed him cranked the AC." Ruby said and led them into the room with the body.
"Bloody hell.." Rogers sighed and observed the scene in front of him. The mans head was completely beaten in and there was blood spatter everywhere, That alone with the smell, it was no wonder the new guy puked. Kassidy, approached the body to get a closer look. "Gloves." She said. Ruby handed her a box, where she grabbed a pair of gloves and put them on. "Who was he?"
"Keith Nottingham." Ruby replied
"Cole...this seems..." Rogers started.
"Oddly familiar? I know. Look at these indents in the skull..I'll never forget what causes those." Kassidy said.
Rogers knelt down to get a closer look.
"A hammer..." He sighed heavily. "Surely its coincidence. You don't think we have a copycat do you?"
"I'm not taking that chance." Kassidy said and looked at Ruby. "Can we cut his shirt off?" She asked. "Very carefully."
"Yeah, let me do it." Ruby nodded. "Graham, show Rogers what was found with the body." Kassidy backed away while Ruby knelt down to the body and began carefully working on the shirt. Her heart thundered in her chest.
Rogers stepped aside with Graham to look at what was found. He took the evidence bag with the unfolded piece of paper and began to read.
Detective Rogers, Detective Cole,
I hope by now it is clear, that you've put the wrong man behind bars. As soon as I got word of the two of you working together again, I knew it was time to come back to play. I have missed our games so much.
Detective Cole, I left an extra special gift for you on Nottingham's body. I do hope that you two survive this first round, I have so much in store for you two!
Kassidy caught a glimpse of something as Ruby was cutting the shirt.
"What is that?" Ruby asked and cut a little more revealing a badge and I.D. Kassidy's eyes welled over as she picked up the badge, evidence be damned. Ruby sighed and kept cutting revealing something all the more unsettling, An explosive strapped to the victims chest.
"Oh.. Sh-"
"Everybody out now!" Rogers shouted, Everyone began scrambling outside. Rogers grabbed Kassidys arm pulling her along with him so fast she dropped the badge in her hand. She tried to pull away from Rogers to retrieve it.
"We have to go Now!" Rogers yelled.
"Wait!" Kassidy begged but at this point Rogers grabbed her around the waist and practically hauled her out of the house. People on the outside were already running for safety. There was a deafening explosion. Rogers dove to the ground behind his car shielding Kassidy as best as she could from the blast.
