Prologue
I lay silently in my bed, a pillow hugged tightly to my chest. My blonde hair was tied in a bun on the top of my head, by nails digging into the soft pillow. Hard fear bloomed in my chest, my breaths coming quickly. The blankets around my feet were tangled and freezing, giving me no warmth.
The sound of my cabin mates breathing was all around me. I tried to force my eyes open, but I knew what I would see. My hand inched towards the dagger hidden under my pillow, and I felt it's cool metal grace my fingertips. Malcolm let out a loud snore, causing me to flinch slightly.
Our counselor, Annabeth, had been gone for two days now. Off to visit her dad or whatever. But now I wished she had stayed behind. Annabeth always stayed up later than everyone else, usually falling asleep at a work table or wherever she happened to be at the moment exhaustion took her over. She'd notice the thing crawling towards my bunk. She'd hear the patter of footsteps on the floor of the cabin.
These past days had been horrible. After the war had ended, all I could feel was cold chills down my spine and the burning of a gaze that followed me everywhere.
Slim, cold fingers wrapped around my ankle and my heart stopped. The blankets were torn off of me and I let loose a scream before blankness overtook me.
