3-Why the Old Man?
I close the door of my car and head towards the small house in front of me. It's colors give off a 'spooky' vibe, dark brown and black mixing with even more shades of brown. There are some overgrown plants on the side and some cracks on the walls, evident enough so that you could see them at night. Overall, it looks pretty-um, wrecked. But I can tell you, the inside is actually kind of decent.
I knock on the wooden door, it creaking and opening by itself. I feel a bit surprised, I know he doesn't lock his door all the time, but I didn't expect it to be open.
I peek inside the house, which is almost completely dark. I squint and take a few steps inside.
"Hello?" I say loudly, taking some more steps and closing the door behind me. I run my hand along the wall, searching for the supposed light switch.
I know there's one here, I just can't find the damn thing. I sigh in frustration, continuing to find it.
Suddenly, I hear a loud sound. Somewhere in between a shout and screech.
I feel someone tackle me to the ground, pinning me to the floor with their hands. I cry out in pain and react quickly, using my knee to kick the person in the groin.
He doubles over backwards, almost tripping over himself as he grabs the wall for support, then accidentally flipping the switch.
I blink and stand up, getting ready to defend myself until I see the attacker. I put my hands down to my sides.
"Ivor?!" I exclaim, watching as an older man groans in pain, cursing under his breath and leaning against the wall. He has dark hair and a beard, with a mucky green looking outfit.
"Oh-Jesse-" he finally says, his face lighting up despite the pain. "Sorry-I thought you were-ugh-I thought you were the tax guy."
I roll my eyes and lend him a hand, helping him stand up straight.
Ivor is sort of like, my uncle-grandpa.
We met when I was driving home from visiting my family, since I go to a college and all. My car suddenly stopped and I was stranded in the middle of the road. It was late, and the road I was taking was deserted. Luckily the nearest town was just a half mile away, and I was able to walk and get some help.
Unfortunately, the man that had come to help me had gotten drunk previously, unknown to me, and I had a lot of difficulty to actually persuade him to help fix my car. Don't worry, he didn't try anything, but he kept on rambling and rambling-
I'll spare you the details, but in the end, it was Ivor who met up with me and helped fix my car. Well, he did it in exchange for a ride home, but still, we became good friends afterwards.
His house is pretty close to mine, and sometimes I visit to help him out or see what he's up to. He always has these crazy inventions and does the most interesting experiments! Of course my big nerdy self can't help it.
I think he even helped me with a bio project once, I got some extra credit on that one too.
Anyway, I'm getting off track.
"The tax guy?" I ask, amused, as he grins bitterly.
"I'm not paying anymore than I have to." He replies, and I shrug my shoulders, not really caring at the moment.
"So, Ivor-"
"This isn't just your weekly visit, hm?" He interrupts, and I stop, nodding. He gestures over to the kitchen, and I follow. "I'll go get some tea. Um, please mind the mess."
Now that he mentions it, this place is a mess. Well, more than usual anyway. There are scattered papers and stains everywhere, and I barely manage to hop over a tipped over box full of packing peanuts and a-microscope I think-before tripping.
"We need to get you a wife," I murmur, but apparently loud enough for him to hear. He scoffs, opening the cabinet to take out a few mugs.
"The day I get a wife is the day there's an apocalypse." He replies, grunting. I watch as he opens the refrigerator and takes out a half gallon of tea. I stare at him.
"What? Did you think I was going to make it?" Ivor asks, and I shrug in reply, taking a seat on the table. He sits down across from me and passes the mug to me, in which I thank him.
Hey, don't judge. I like tea.
"So, there's this Building Con-" I can't even finish before he interrupts me. He has that habit.
"Oh, no no no no no. I know about that. It's where a bunch of nerds and geeks get together and obsess over useless machines." He says, grunting. I feel offended.
"Okay, first of all, you hang out with a nerd all the time-" I point to myself, "-second, there'll be plenty of adults there too. Third, the machines aren't useless, and you build all the time!"
I hold up a hand to stop him before he can interrupt again.
"And fourth, you need to get out there. You need to socialize." I say persuasively, folding my arms across my chest.
"Jesse, I'm not going to some silly Building Competition-"
"Con."
"Whatever. I'm not going. Thanks for the offer though." He adds the last part quietly, and takes a sip of his tea.
"Look, I got dragged into this. And you are too." I exclaim, not planning on being defeated. "There'll be a bunch of cool stuff there! And it'll give you ideas on new inventions of yourself! Please?"
I give him the puppy-dog eyes, the same ones Lukas gives to me. He looks away from me, but I can see the creases on his face tighten with effort.
"Pretty please?" I plead, and when he continues not to answer, I go bad cop.
I slam my hand on the table which makes the tea ripple in their mugs. He flinches.
"Okay, I tried. But you're coming with me whether you like it or not. I will drag you there if I have to." I say, and he stares at me in shock. The look in his eyes tells me I've won. I give him an evil grin and grab the mug. "So, you'll go with me now?"
He stares at me one last time, hesitating.
"Fine."
I smile innocently and give him a fatherly hug, laughing.
"Awesome! Thanks Ivor!"
"You know, you're scary when you're like that." He says under his breath, but a small grin reaching the ends of his lips. "I can't win with you."
"Ha, I know." I reply, gesturing for him to get up. "Come on, get ready. You're not wearing an unwashed robe to Building Con. And you're never gonna get a wife wearing that."
His cheeks turn a faint scarlet.
"This is a limited edition robe-" he protests. "And I'm not going to get a wife-"
I just wink at him.
