Chapter 97 - Route 66
"I've missed her." Fleur smiled at Derek, her parents bringing Adelaide over.
"I always miss her." Derek sighed.
"She'll be here soon, right?"
"Of course she will."
"I just get worried." Fleur shook her head.
"I know you do." Morgan rubbed her back.
Fleur then heard the door go, running to it,"Hi sweetheart."
"Mama, hi." Adelaide grinned.
"I missed you."
"I missed you too." She sighed,"And Papa."
"Of course I missed you, kiddo." Morgan kissed her head.
Adelaide chuckled,"I hope you didn't have too much fun without me."
"You know we wouldn't." Fleur hummed.
"I wouldn't put it past you." Adelaide pointed at Morgan.
"What?" Morgan gasped.
"Nothing." She hummed.
"Don't play with me." Morgan laughed
"But it's so fun." Adelaide chuckled.
"Come on, everyone missed you. Maybe you can see them later, hm?" Fleur hummed.
"I'd love that." Adelaide nodded.
"How about..Calling your uncle?"
"Oh yeah!"
"Go on, suprise him." Fleur hummed.
Adelaide smirked as she pulled out her phone and called Elijah,"Uncle Jah."
"Junebug, hi." He yawned.
"Sorry, were you sleeping?" Adelaide sighed.
"No. What gave you that impression?"
'The yawn." She chuckled.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Elijah shook his head.
"Y'know.. I could always just come over." Addy shrugged.
"I'm not going to ask your grandparents to drive you all the way from Florida to see me." Elijah sighed.
"I could just walk over."
"Walk- Why would you walk?"
"Your house is only like.. Twenty minutes away?"
Elijah paused, having to think,"..When did you get to your mom's house?"
"About ten minutes ago." Adelaide laughed.
"Next time, start with that." He pointed.
"Sorry for waking you, Uncle Jah."
"It's fine, really. I needed to get up anyway."
"Didn't Spencer get you up?" Adelaide tilted her head.
"Well, he did.. But I figured that I wanted to sleep more." Elijah shrugged.
"You're worse than me with sleep."
"I'm either not getting enough or getting too much. Either way, I'm always tired." He sighed.
"Well, can we still come over?" Addy raised a brow.
"Of course, I'll be ready." Elijah hummed.
"See you then." Addy smiled and hung up,"I think that went well."
Morgan chuckled,"I think so too, kid."
"Right, unpack your things and then we'll head over, hm?" Fleur suggested.
"Yeah." Adelaide nodded.
*********************************
"I just put in new brakes. She's running like a dream." Rossi hummed, showing the team a picture of his car.
"I always admired the aesthetic of the classic Torpedo C-body, especially in the 1947." Reid told him,"They just don't make them like that anymore."
"Yeah, well, I'm lucky to have found it." Rossi nodded,"Uncle Sal would be proud."
"Thank you for coming in everyone. We can get started." Hotch sighed as he walked in.
"Okay. Guys, meet Samantha Wilcox, sixteen year old Junior in Wichita, Kansas. Last night, she snuck out with her boyfriend, they were attacked, she hasn't been seen since." Garcia began.
"Boyfriend got a broken jaw and a concussion." Morgan read from the file.
"And the description of the attacker matches her father, Eddie Lee Wilcox." Hotch added.
"Ex-con." Blake looked up.
"Oh, is he ever. Still on parole. Eddie is a car thief and wheel man extraordinaire." Garcia showed the picture of him.
"String of assault charges, too. Been in and out of jail since he was a kid." JJ sighed.
"We don't usually work parental abduction cases." Blake turned to Hotch.
"We do when the abduction's violent and dad's a former convict." Rossi shrugged.
"He hasn't been incarcerated in over three years. I mean, he's had ample opportunity. Why pick yesterday to kidnap her?" Reid wondered.
"Well, he beat the boyfriend within an inch of his life to do it, so taking her must've been real important." Elijah hummed.
"Apparently, Eddie was none too pleased that Samantha's mom Melody had decided to remarry and then move from Chicago to Wichita." Fleur pointed.
"He lost visitation rights the last time he got locked up." Blake nodded.
"So the anger about this is the stressor that builds up over the years. Last night, he decides to do something about it." JJ suggested.
"This could be vengeance for taking his daughter away." Reid agreed.
"If it's revenge against the mother, he'll either hurt Samantha or disappear with her." Rossi sighed.
"She's been missing for over five hours, and we know how time sensitive these cases are. The Amber Alert is expanding.. Every hour... Excuse me." Hotch struggled to finish as he turned around.
"Hotch?" Fleur got up.
"Aaron." Morgan shot up, trying to catch Hotch before he fell to the ground.
*********************************
Aaron had been rushed to the hospital, Rossi staying with him while the others boarded the jet to go to Kansas. Internal bleeding..
"Bleeding internally from what?" JJ asked.
"They think it's probably all the scar tissue." Rossi sighed, he was calling them from the hospital.
"Torn adhesions from the stab wounds." Reid nodded.
"George Foyet returns from the grave." Fleur muttered.
"What's the prognosis?" Blake questioned.
"He's stable right now. They did an ultrasound, but can't seem to see exactly where the bleeding was coming from." Rossi answered.
"He'll need an exploratory laparotomy." Reid shook his head.
"Does Jack know?" Fleur raised a brow.
"Not yet. I talked to Haley's sister, Jessica. We didn't want to worry the little guy." Rossi explained.
Kayleigh
'What about Beth?" Blake tilted her head.
"I left a message, but she's on a business trip in Milan. Look, I know you're all worried. So am I. But a teenage girl's been abducted, and Hotch would want us to focus on the case, not on him. And that's exactly what we're gonna do." Rossi sighed before he pointed,"Now, when the plane lands, Morgan, JJ and Howards, I want you to interview Samantha Wilcox's mother. Reid, Blake and Deans, you go check out teh abduction site. I'm catching the next flight to Wichita, and I'll meet you there."
"What about Hotch?" Blake sighed.
"Garcia's here. She's not going anywhere." Rossi assured her,"Now, let's go find this girl."
*********************************
"He's just one of those guys, you know?" Melody sighed to Fleur, Morgan and JJ,"He makes you feel special. You think you can change him, but he never does."
"Were you aware of Eddie's criminal background?" JJ asked her.
"He told me he was a mechanic. I thought all those new cars were part of his job. But after a while, I noticed things." She shook her head.
"Like what?" Morgan raised a brow.
"His sketchy friends, um..sometimes he'd be gone for days and then suddenly he'd have all this cash."
"Was he ever violent with you?" Fleur sighed.
Melody nodded,"He's got a bad temper."
"What about with Samantha?" Derek raised a brow.
"He wasn't around enough." Meoldy shook her head,"He got locked up when she was six and didn't get out until she was thirteen. After that, I moved. But I wasn't the one who told him, Sam was."
"So they were in touch." Morgan sighed.
"How often were they in contact?" JJ tilted her head.
"I don't know. She doesn't tell me anything. We fight all the time. I.. I thought it was because she's a teenager, but.." Melody trailed off.
"You can't blame yourself. You did everything you could to try and keep her safe." JJ told her.
"I did all that because I've always been scared she's too much like him." She cried.
*********************************
"This place is off the beaten path." Reid commented as he, Elijah and Blake looked around the crime scene.
"He must have followed her here from her house." Blake sighed.
"Which suggests he might not have planned the abduction." Elijah pointed.
"He just waited for the right opportunity." Blake shrugged.
"Hey, look at this." Elijah picked up a cellphone,"She left her cellphone behind."
"Odd for a teenage girl. Maybe she lost it in the struggle." Blake suggested.
"Or it's a forensic countermeasure so they can't be tracked by the GPS." Reid added.
"Garcia got a hit on VICAP." Morgan walked up with JJ and Fleur,"Day before yesterday two masked gunman robbed a pawn shop in Chicago. 25K in cash and jewels were stolen."
"The owner and a customer were shot dead." JJ sighed.
"So was one of the gunmen, except he was shot eight times with a .45." Fleur nodded.
"Emptied the magazine. Overkill?" Reid tilted his head.
"You think our guys the shooter?" Alex wondered.
"The dead gunman was one Christopher Corbone. Spent six years in the same cell block as Eddie Lee Wilcox." JJ told her.
"They were partners." Morgan added.
"And Corbone was heavily connected to the Riggio family in Chicago. Mid-level mafioso thug." JJ finished.
"Sounds like a double cross." Blake sighed.
"You know, if he double-crossed his partner, he's not just on the run from the law, he could also be running from the mob." Elijah crossed his arms.
"That explains why the need to grab his daughter was so urgent." Fleur nodded.
"With good guys and bad guys on his tail, he has to know that this doesn't end well." Morgan pointed.
"It doesn't make sense. If he loves her so much, why out her in this type of jeopardy?" JJ wondered.
"His desperation is making him irrational." Reid told her.
"He's gonna get dangerous if he gets cornered." Morgan added.
*********************************
The team walked into a gas station that Eddie and Samantha were at, where the owner had been shot dead.
"No news on Hotch yet. But Samantha Wilcox was in touch with her dad a lot. I got their texts right here." Morgan told them as he walked in.
"May I?" Blake held out her hand.
"Yeah, go ahead." Morgan nodded and handed her his phone.
"Thanks. 'I hate my life. Mom's a bitch. Hubby's a tool and Wichita blows. Why can't I live with you?'" Blake read out,"Then dad responds in kind, 'Love you lots. We'll be together soon'."
"She wanted him to come get her." Fleur sighed.
"Yeah, what if they planned it?" Elijah suggested.
"I don't know. I'm not seeing anything logistical in nature here. It's all emotional outbursts at her mom and little loving missives to her dad." Blake scrolled.
"I doubt if she had anything to do with this, though." Rossi pointed to the body "Name's Damon Turner, fifty-four year old widower, father of three, and apparently he was expecting his first grandchild."
"No security cameras." JJ looked around.
"He had a shotgun stashed back there. I wonder why he didn't use it." Rossi pointed.
"Eddie must have got the jump on him before he could." Blake shook her head.
"Guy recognises Eddie, calls 911. Eddie clocks it, caps him to shut him up." JJ nodded.
"But the damage is already done. He already made the call. Why kill him? Why didn't Eddie just take off?" Elijah questioned.
"Well, he's in survival mode. He'll try to eliminate any perceived threats." Fleur shrugged.
"He didn't rob the place. He left all the cash in the register." Blake pointed.
"He didn't have to. He had money from the Chicago robberies." She shook her head.
"Actually, I think he may have. Look at this." Reid held up the receipt,"Several items were rung up after the 911 call. A bag of chips, a pack of gum and six post cards."
"Postcards? What does he want, a souvenir?" JJ questioned.
"It's possible. He knows if he gets caught, he's going away for a long time and being his daughter may have evoke a need to commemorate the event." Reid suggested.
"But postcards are old school. Being with his daughter might actually make him nostalgic in some way." Blake nodded.
"Well he's headed due south, most likely straight to Mexico." Morgan mentioned.
"He'll stick to aide roads and won't cross the border anywhere busy." Rossi pointed.
"I'll extend the Amber Alert and have highway patrol set up roadblocks." JJ walked off.
*********************************
"As you all know, Eddie Lee Wilcox is armed and dangerous." Rossi began the profile.
"He's also smart and criminally sophisticated. He knows police procedude and how to use it." JJ added.
"He's flush with cash from his robbery in Chicago, but he'll try to maintain a flow profile, so he may resort to his robbery skills at some point." Reid continued.
"Eddie's a car thief and he's a good one. So he'll switch vehicles often. He was last seen in a Chevy minivan, but we do not count on him being in it for long." Fleur hummed.
"So, canvas crowded parking lots and malls. That's most likely where he'll ditch cars and find new ones." Elijah told them.
"We've been calling this a child abduction, but Eddie's daughter Samantha may actually be an unwitting participant." Rossi added.
"We know she wanted to run away from home, and her father is somehow taking advantage of that." Blake sighed.
"This guy's evolved into a sociopathic spree killer, and he's got the ego of a career criminal, so there's no telling how far he'll go to save himself." Morgan continued.
"That ego may be feeding a sort of pipe dream, that if he does escape, he may actually get to have a healthy relationship with his daughter." Rossi nodded.
"A relationship he believes was taken from him." JJ added.
"But when reality sets in, his dream will be shattered, and that's when Samantha will be in the most danger." Blake pointed.
"The majority of these cases end in either murder/suicide or suicide by cop." Reid sighed.
"Up to this point, we've been reacting to him, but the road blocks and the media blitz are set up to make him react to us." Elijah crossed his arms.
"So if you spot him, call for backup and proceed with extreme caution." Morgan warned,"He's probably sleep deprived and irrational."
"The closer we get, the more dangerous he becomes." Rossi finished.
*********************************
Reid, Morgan and Elijah were waiting at the highway, in case Eddie drove by.
"This guy's not coming." Morgan shook his head.
"Mmm, we really haven't been here that long." Reid turned the page in his book.
"Yeah, but if he wanted to run for the border he'd have been caught in the net by now." Morgan sat down.
"Maybe we made him switch directions." Elijah suggested.
"Well, we can't cover everything. Texas is huge." Morgan sighed.
"258,581 square miles, to be exact. The largest state in the contiguous forty-eight and the second-most populous. Don't mess with Texas." Reid held out his book,"Hey, do you want to read? I always do when I'm anxious."
"The magical mathematics of quantum physics." Morgan blinked and he handed it back,"Oh! Nope. I'm good, I'll wait for the movie."
The trio continued checking cars with the highway patrol but still, nothing. No sign of Eddie and Samantha. That's when Garcia called, taking their attention way for a moment.
"What have you got, good-looking?" Elijah hummed.
"Still nothing on Hotch. I have a sort of something on Samantha Wilcox. She just called her mom from a motel in Odessa, but they weren't-" Garcia began.
"That's only 103 miles west from here." Reid spoke up.
"Alert local PD. We're on our way." Morgan instructed as they began walking.
"Wait, wait, wait. I already did that. I called the police and Samantha and her dad are nowhere to be see." Garcia told them,"Sorry, guys "
"He won't like the idea of her calling home. That phone call will probably drive a wedge between the two of them." Reid sighed.
"We're close and he knows it. Maybe he'll make a mistake." Elijah nodded.
*********************************
"Okay, here we go. Eddie's story is way more tragic than we thought. We know his mom died in childbirth and his dad committed suicide. What we didn't know was that he's the one who found his fathers dead body." Garcia informed the others.
"He was only five." JJ sighed.
"Yeah. The postman called the cops when he smelled something horrible. Turns out that little kindergarten-sized Eddie was in the house with the corpse for two days." Garcia bit her cheek,"And it was in the middle of a crazy heatwave so.."
"Wait a minute, Garcia. Eddie's father died February 2nd." Reid began.
"Uh, correctamundo." Garcia nodded.
"The average temperature in Chicago in February is 26 degrees Fahrenheit." He blinked.
"Oh! No, they weren't in Chicago. They were in Los Angeles because his father had a job opportunity that fell through, which he apologised for in his suicide note that he wrote on a stack of post cards."
"Are you sure that they drove?" Elijah asked.
"Yeah. Because the post cards were from stops they made along the way." Garcia nodded.
"I think I know where they might be headed." Reid sighed.
*********************************
The team had arrived at where Eddie and Samantha were, everyone exiting the SUVs and beginning to set up.
"Eddie Lee Wilcox, this is the FBI. We can work this out, but you have to let Samantha go." Morgan called to him over the loudspeaker,"Come on, she's your daughter. Do the right thing, Eddie."
"Has he said anything yet?" Blake asked.
"Not a word." Reid shook his head,"Statistically speaking, the longer this takes the worse his daughter's chances get."
"I don't know. If he was gonna do something to her, he would have done it by now." JJ sighed.
"But now he's trapped. The game's changed." Elijah pointed.
"I'm gonna try something." Fleur nodded, grabbing the phone and rang the phone near then.
"Eddie, pick up the phone man. We only want to help you. Come on, think about Samantha." Morgan called to him again.
"What?" Eddie answered the call.
"Hey, Eddie. This is Agent Deans and Agent Howard's with the FBI. You can call us Elijah and Fleur." Elijah introduced them.
"What do you want?"
"The same as you. We want Samantha safe." He answered.
"She's fine." Eddie told him.
"Can you put her on the phone so we can hear her ourself?" Fleur asked.
Eddie was silent and they heard rustling before he spoke ahead,"Go ahead."
"Samantha?" Fleur asked.
"Yeah?" Samantha responded softly.
"You okay?"
"Yeah.."
"Is there anything you guys need?" Elijah raised a brow.
"For you to get the hell out of here." Eddie warned.
"You know we can't do that, Eddie." Elijah sighed,"But we can help get your daughter to safety."
"Look, Eddie, I know all you've ever wanted is for her to be happy and safe.. Does she look happy to you?" Fleur raised a brow.
"And there's a bunch of police out here with guns. Her safety's definitely an issue." Elijah added.
"Eddie, I know why you took her to the ocean. You wanted one last trip..Same as you had with your dad, I know exactly how you feel." Fleur told him.
"How do I feel, Fleur?" Eddie questioned.
"I lost someone too, once, the same way you did." Fleur admitted.
"Don't talk like you know me. You don't know me." Eddie shoo his head.
"My best friend.. When I was eleven she.. Was killed in one of the most gruesome ways a eleven year old can imagine.. I found her body the next morning."
"Shut up!"
"Don't make Samantha feel the same way we did. It will change her, forever, the same way it did us." Fleur shook her head.
"Shut up, damn it! I said shut up!" Eddie yelled, banging the phone against itself.
"Eddie." Fleur sighed.
"He's not coming out. SWAT should get ready." Rossi shook his head.
After a few moments, Rossi spoke again.
"He let's her go, he either shoots himself or shoots his way out."
"There she is." Reid pointed at Samantha slowly walked forward.
Samantha looked behind her before running back into the building. Samantha walked back put a few minutes later, her hands raised and behind her.. Eddie walked out too.
"Look." JJ pointed as Samantha ran up to Eddie and hugged him.
SWAT then approached and separated the pair with Samantha screaming and crying as she was dragged away while Eddie continued to reassure her, not putting up a fight.
*********************************
"I missed you kitties." Addy gasped and petted Elijah and Reid's cats.
"Trust me, they missed you too." Elijah chuckled.
"I missed them more." Adelaide kissed them.
"Hm, I think I missed you more than they did." Elijah pointed.
"I missed you too, Uncle Jah."
Elijah smiled and held his arms open. Adelaide hummed and ran up, hugging him.
"There's my Junebug."
"I don't know how long I'm here for." Adelaide mentioned.
"Well, you can stay as long as you want." Elijah told her.
"Thanks, Uncle Jah." Addy smiled.
"No problem, Addy." He hummed.
