Chapter 93 - Brothers Hotchner
Elijah was staring at himself in the bathroom mirror. It was him. But at the same time, it wasn't. When he looked at that mirror, it wasn't Elijah staring back. It was Benjamin.
"Eli?" Reid knocked on the bathroom door.
"Hm?" Elijah glanced over at the door.
"Can I come in?" Reid asked slowly.
"..Of course." Elijah hesitated.
"Elijah."
Elijah bit his cheek as he unlocked the bathroom door.
"What's going on?" Reid tilted his head as he walked in.
"Nothing's going on." Elijah shook his head,"I'm just tired."
"Elijah..I know something's wrong." Reid sighed.
"I'm fine." Elijah ran his fingers through his hair.
"You do this thing, with your hands."
"No I don't." Elijah crossed his arms
"You're doing it now." He pointed out.
"I'm not doing anything."
Reid sighed and looked at him.
"I wasn't trying to hurt myself if that's what you're so concerned about." Elijah shook his head.
"I'm not, I just.. You've been a while and I just get worried for you." Reid told him.
"It takes time to look this good." Elijah pointed.
Reid chuckled,"Promise you're okay."
"I promise."
Reid kissed his cheek,"I love you."
"I love you more." Elijah took his hand and squeezed it.
Reid smiled,"I'll be downstairs, okay?"
"Of course." He nodded.
Reid hummed and let go of Elijah's hand, leaving the bathroom. Elijah let his smile falter as he looked back at the mirror one last time as his reflection before shaking his head and leaving the bathroom as well.

Everyone walked into the Concerence Room, sitting down as Hotch appeared on the screen. In Manhattan there was a series of deaths, also where Hotch's brother, Sean, lived.
"And the M.E reports showed three other victims bleeding out over the last week." Hotch told them.
"Yeah, one in Harlem, two in the village, all five have been categorised as ecstasy overdoses." Garcia added.
"And one of the victims may have been drugged without her knowledge." Hotch finished.
"Ecstasy is frequently used as a date rape drug, but I've never seen it cause bleeding like this." Fleur tilted her head.
"Could it be a bad batch?" Strauss suggested.
"Well, uh, according to the M.E, the victims had so much MDMA in their systems that it caused their internal body temperature to go out of control.. They boiled from the inside out." Garcia sighed.
"That's not typical of overdose victims either." Elijah shook his head,"We could be looking at product tampering, similar to the Tylenol cyanide poisoning in '86."
"And the working theory in that case was that the UnSub targeted a specific victim but dosed mass quantities to cover his tracks." Hotch nodded.
"So you're telling me these deaths could just be the start." Strauss looked up at him.
"Yes Ma'am. I'd like the team to join me in New York as soon as possible."
"We're on our way, Aaron." Rossi nodded.
"Thanks." Hotch hung up.
"You're coming, aren't you?" Rossi turned to Strauss.
"Just as a precaution. This team tends to go rogue when loved ones are involved." Strauss hummed.
*********************************
"This is more than product tampering." Morgan shook his head as he looked at photos of the victims,"This is mass murder."
"Overdosing certainly seems like a hard sell now." Rossi sighed.
"How is he taking out experienced partiers and non-drug users at the same time?" Strauss questioned.
"He has to be dosing his victims without their knowledge somehow." Alex nodded.
"Ecstasy can be made in pill, powder and liquid form. It wouldn't be hard to slip something in someone's drink or to convince them the pill they're taking is safe." Elijah told them.
"So even regular users might not know they're being dosed until it's too late." JJ sighed.
"Why kill in such a graphic manner?" Strauss asked.
"Well, he gets off in the spectacle. It's not just about the victims with this guy. It's about the witnesses. He incites fear." Fleur looked up.
"Which means the UnSub is desperate for attention, and he wants all eyes on his work because he craves recognition." Blake continued.
"He'll be paying close attention to the media, then." Rossi turned to Blake,"It allows him to relive his crimes."
"You know, the medium of his kill is interesting. He's picking a drug known for its euphoric effect. It's like he wants to take that happiness away." Reid explained.
"Well, it can't be a coincidence that the majority of his victims are known drug users. He's taking the law into his own hands." Morgan realised.
"But what about the two who were clean?" Blake raised a brow,"Linda Heying and Erik Sullivan's families insist they never touched the stuff."
"Either the victims are good at hiding the truth or the Unsub's killing for another reason. We should take a closer look and see how they're connected." Rossi told them.
*********************************
Elijah and Reid were talking to one of the kids at the rave... Eleven people had died before the team could even arrive in the city.
"It's the drug." The man slurred.
"Did you and your friends take the same pills?" Elijah asked him.
"Yeah. But it wasn't pills. It was Liquid X."
"I'm just trying to understand why the drug killed your friends and not you." Reid crossed his arms,"Did they take a lot more than you?"
The boy nodded in response.
"Why was that?"
"They had more money."
"Why would you want more doses?" Elijah questioned,"I mean, it looks like the drugs had their intended effect."
"Eventually, yeah." He sighed,"But it took forever and the others didn't want to wait."
"How long does it normally take?" Reid raised a brow.
"An hour, maybe. But this stuff was different. It took nearly double that."
"So your friends bought more doses, thinking the batch they'd taken was weak." Elijah nodded slowly,"How much more did they take? Do you know?"
"Two vials, each." He answered.
"Do you think you'd be able to describe the person you bought the ecstasy from?" Reid asked him.
"Don't have to. He's right over there." He pointed towards the bodybag getting zipped up a few feet away.
"Thanks." Elijah cleared his throat as they walked over to the others,"The delayed onset of the drug caused the victims to OD themselves."
"Well, that explains why the victims boiled." Morgan nodded,"The higher the dose, the higher the heat."
"Maybe it was designed that way." JJ suggested,"According to the M.E report, the ecstasy was cut with a high volume of methamphetamine."
Morgan sighed and called Garica.
"Go for greatness." Garcia hummed.
"Hey babygirl, I need you to run a search on delayed onset MDMA. Methamphetamine mixtures. See if you could find anything about-" Morgan began.
"Woah." Garcia gasped.
"What?" Fleur asked.
"Double oh to the woah to the oh woah power. There's a drug called para-methoxish.." Garcia's speech slowed.
"Paramethoxymethamphetamine?" Reid asked.
"Yes. What you just said. PΜΜΑ, for short." Garcia nodded,"It just hit the international market. It's street name, which I'm not making up, is Doctor Death. So coined be upset the drug keeps killing people. Apparently it's produced with such a huge percentage of meth, it masks the effect of the ecstacy until the user's already taken too much."
"MDMA costs more to make than methamphetamine, so it's common practice to mix the two in creating ecstasy in order to maximise profit margins." Reid mentioned.
"Like watering down liquor, except in this case, the water kills you." Elijah nodded.
"So is this PMMA coming straight from the manufacturer, or is our UnSub altering the drug supply to make it more lethal?" Fleur suggested.
*********************************
"I hope you saved me for dessert." Garcia grinned as she answered the call.
"Morgan isn't here, babygirl." Fleur hummed.
"But Elijah is, and darling, you know I can be just as charming as Derek Morgan." Elijah leaned back in his chair.
"Oh- I knew that. I totally meant it for you." Garcia chuckled.
"Please tell us you found something?" Blake turned to her.
"How about a sequel to The Grapes of Wrath?" Garcia suggested,"I tracked the wine bottles both Erik Sullivan and the Hatchitt family were drinking, and look out 'cause those bottles were in cases shipped to the Edinburgh."
"Why would someone from the bar drug the wine?" JJ asked.
"Maybe it occurred at the bottling plant." Fleur tilted her head.
"There's no way to track where a specific case is going to until after it's offloaded." Garcia shook her head.
"Yeah. It doesn't explain the rave victims." JJ sighed.
"It would if we're dealing with two Unsubs." Elijah mentioned.
"One who alters the drug, another who doses the wine." Fleur agreed.
"But if someone at the club is spiking the wine, how is it ending up in the hands of two Manhattan parents and one underage boy from Harlem?" Blake questioned.
"Garcia, did any of the wine victims make transactions at the Edinburgh?" JJ asked.
"Nothing that's obvious. I'll keep checking. Beep beep." Garcia hung up.
"Okay so, we have five overdose victims we can connect directly to the Edinburgh, a club that condones drug use. The answer is there." Fleur sighed.
*********************************
The team arrived at the scene of a car crash, the driver the man the team were looking for, Peters, who ran from the club when they raided it.
"The crash didn't kill him. Someone poured PMMA down his nose and throat." Morgan sighed as Hotch approached.
"The drug aside, this is a completely different MO. He's no longer content to sit back and watch. Why?" Reid tilted his head.
"The overkill seems personal. Whoever did this had a definite grudge against Peters." Morgan shook his head.
"Garcia's running background and financial records on Sean." Hotch sighed.
"Hotch..Don't you think you're overreacting?" Morgan suggested.
"He left the Edinburgh for a reason. We need to know why." Hotch pointed.
"You can't actually think he did this?"
"I don't, but I can't eliminate the possibility until I know what he's hiding."
"Maybe we should look at this from another way. We know Thane was responsible for doing the wine. That was his own plan, not the Unsub's. So how would a sociopath seeking recognition for his achievements handle someone interfering with his work?" Reid asked.
"He'd put a stop to it." Elijah looked back at the car,"Any way he could."
"That was after the Hatchitt parents were killed. As innocent victims, they were the deviation." Hotch told them.
"So we were wrong. The Unsub does care who dies." Morgan pointed.
"Instead of targeting Thane, the UnSub went after Peters. He held him responsible." Reid crossed his arms.
"He may hold Peters responsible for more than Thane's actions." Elijah suggested,"I'm gonna have Garcia look into his life."
"In the meantime, we'll use that to find out what we can." Hotch nodded.
*********************************
"If Spires has been dead for a month, he can't be our guy." Rossi shook his head.
"Why would the dealers keep paying him?" Fleur sighed as she sat down at the table with the others.
"They don't know their courier died. Someone must have taken his place." Hotch stated.
"The UnSub. He killed Spires so he could get his hands on the drug supply." JJ nodded.
"Who else knew he was a courier? Another baggage handler?" Blake raised a brow.
"Sure. They must be on the take, too, paid to look the other way." Rossi shrugged.
"Garcia, do any of the baggage handlers show a history of drug abuse?" Elijah asked her
"A few minor infractions, but nothing that sticks out." Garcia shook her head.
"Alright, widen the search. Have any airport employees had a drug death in the family recently?" Hotch questioned.
"Mmm.. Yeah. The daughter of Larry Feretich, Megan, she died two months ago of a suspected ecstasy overdose." She nodded.
"There's your trigger." JJ pointed.
"Where did she die?" Fleur asked.
"Uh.. The Obsidian. It's the other club owned by Jim Peters." Garcia told her.
"He's smart. He avoided dosing the Obsidian supply so we couldn't connect the murders to him." Rossi nodded.
"Garcia, where is Feretich now?" Hotch asked.
"At the airport."
"Alright, notify Morgan and Reid." He instructed.
"Yeah."
*********************************
After Feretich, they all headed back to their hotel rooms for the night and they would fly home in the morning. But Elijah wasn't tired and figured he'd call Strauss, because he just wanted to talk to someone.
"Elijah?" Strauss answered.
"Hey, Strauss."
"Are you alright?"
"Well, these cases are always.. Harder. But I'm okay." He told her.
"They always get harder.. Never easier." She sighed.
"I haven't really been thinking about.. It.. Not since you took me to that first meeting." Elijah sat down.
"Well, I'm glad that you've not been thinking about it." Strauss sat up.
"Have you?"
"No." Strauss sighed,"And I'm glad on how far both you and I have came."
"..It's nice, having someone to talk to about this." Elijah nodded slowly,"Don't get me wrong, I trust the team with my life but.."
"It's nice to speak to someone that understands." Strauss smiled softly.
"It is."
"I'm going to head to sleep, okay Eli?" Strauss hummed.
"Okay, you enjoy yourself." Elijah smiled,"I'll see you in the morning."
"I'll see you in the morning." Strauss hung up.
Elijah sat the phone down and laid back, he should probably get some sleep too.
