Chapter 90 - Broken

Elijah hummed as he drove to Fleur's place, with Reid in the seat beside them. He liked when the couples both rode together.

"Think they'll be out in time?" Reid wondered.

"They will." Elijah nodded,"They.. Usually are."

"Usually?"

"I said what I said." He shrugged as he pulled over.

"We should've grabbed food." Reid sighed.

"I can drive fast and pick up something on the way."

"Depends how much time we have." Reid shrugged.

"Time is scared of me." Elijah pointed,"We'll have time."

"Hey! Sorry, are we late?" Fleur ran outside, into the car.

"That depends." Elijah looked back at her,"Where's the nearest place I can get food?"

"Um.." Morgan thought,"Depends what you guys are in the mood for."

"Anything." He shrugged.

"There's a bakery down the road?" Morgan hummed.

"That'll do just fine." Reid nodded.

"Then bakery it is." Fleur told Elijah.

"I'm down." Elijah hummed as he began to drive.

"I recommend their crossaints." Fleur pointed.

"Are they as good as yours?" Reid asked.

"Of course not." Fleur chuckled.

"Nothing can compare." Elijah hummed.

The team didn't even get a chance to exchange hello's or pleasantries with each other before they were sent to the jet.

"Last night, Michelle Bradley went missing from a friend's bachelorette party in Austin, Texas." Garcia told them.

"Austin PD say that she is the third in a series of abductions in a week." Hotch explained.

"Right. The first victim, Craig Pickett, was a student at TU. He disappeared from a fraternity party. He was discovered at the visitor parking lot just after sunrise. He had been beaten with a blunt object." Garcia informed them,"And then Heather Wilson, she was a veterinarian living in the Old West District. She disappeared from a speed-dating function thing, and she was found in a nearby alley the next morning. She had been stripped, and she had been stabbed."

"Each of the victims was at a social gathering the night they were abducted. Witness reports say that they were there one minute and gone the next." Hotch added.

"Okay, so this guy doesn't waste time. He knows who he wants and how to get them. This shows organization and sophistication." Morgan nodded.

"He had Craig and Heather for less than twelve hours before he killed them. We may already be out of time to save Michelle." Fleur sighed.

"No apparent link in victimology." Hotch continued,"What troubles me is the variation in MO."

"The speed and efficiency of the abduction suggests one UnSub. So is he using weapons of opportunity or specifically catering his murder ritual to each victim?" Reid wondered.

"There's clear evidence of overkill on both." Elijah pointed,"Craig's face was caved in, and the damage to Heather's genitals was extensive."

"He's angry, but about what?" Alex wondered.

"Well, the motive on Heather appears sexual. She was stripped down to no more than a watch, while Craig was left fully clothed." JJ sighed.

"His wallet was missing. There might be some kind of financial motivation." Morgan suggested.

"Or its plain, old-fashioned jealousy." Rossi hummed,"He kills Craig in a rage and the beast is unleashed. That's when he starts targeting women."

"His area of control appears to be quite large. What's interesting is he dumps the bodies in the same district they're abducted from." Reid sighed.

"So he doesn't go far, yet he'd need privacy. Maybe he uses his vehicle for the assaults?" JJ tilted her head.

"Which means he could be anywhere." Blake nodded.

*********************************

"I've scoured the victim's social feeds and I can confirm Michelle is the only one who turned up wearing a watch that didn't belong to her." Garcia informed them.

"Well, she's also the only one not wearing a watch when abducted. Time is somehow important to this UnSub." Morgan shook his head.

"But not the right time." Reid pointed out,"None of the watches were accurate. That has to mean something."

"It's a message, but for whom?" JJ wondered,"The watch he put on Michelle was broken. Could that be his way of saying her time was up?"

"Maybe they were taunts, telling us we were out of time." Elijah suggested.

"Could it be like time of death? You know, like only the UnSub understands it notification kind of thing?" Garica asked.

"You know, Garcia might be right." Reid nodded slowly.

"It happens."

"Not about the notifications. The times don't add up. But what if it's a warning? What if he's setting the watches to the time of the next abduction?" Reid looked around.

"6:22." Morgan looked at the watch.

JJ looked up at the clock, well past 6:22,"I really hope you're wrong, Spence."

*********************************

"There's been another victim?" Reid asked as they walked into the Conference Room.

"Doug Warn, an accountant from Boston. Hotch and Rossi are still at the crime scene." Morgan told him, sticking Doug's photo on the board,"Body was dumped near a park."

"Was he wearing a watch?" Fleur asked.

Morgan handed over a photo of the watch, 6:59.

"6:59, was the watch still working?" Reid blinked.

"If you mean by working, still ticking, yeah, but it was at least two hours off, though." Elijah nodded.

"Now that we have a few working watches, though, we might be able to see a pattern in how or why the UnSub changed the times." Reid suggested,"Let's see.."

Elijah tilted his head as Reid grabbed a sticky note and a pen, scribbling something down.

"What time was the body discovered?" He asked.

"About an hour ago, maybe. Why?" Morgan blinked.

"Do you know the exact time?"

"A jogger called it in at 9:04. He was running laps, so the body couldn't have been laying there more than a few minutes." Morgan explained.

After Reid scribbled down more times and numbers, he looked up,"I think I know what the messages say."

"Reid, spit it out already." Fleur sighed.

"6:22."

"Okay, are you talking about Michelle's watch or Doug's watch?" Morgan blinked.

"I'm talking about all the watches. If you take the times the bodies were discovered, subtract the variance the corresponding watches are off by, you land within plus or minus six minutes of 6:22 every single time. Which, taking into consideration the time between dump and discovery and all the public areas and the fact that the only broken watch we found was already stuck at 6:22, it's reasonable to deduce the Unsub sets the watches to the exact same time just before disposing of the bodies." Reid explained,"So stupid. It was literally staring me in the face this whole time. I don't know how I missed it."

"C'mon Reid, stop, you're the only person who can realise all of this." Morgan sighed,"So what does 6:22 mean?"

"I have no idea." He shook his head.

"Reid.

"All I know is what it says. I don't know what it means." Reid shrugged.

*********************************

"We believe we're looking for a white, homosexual male in his mid to late twenties who is suffering from an identity crisis." Hotch began to give the profile.

"This man can't accept his same-sex desires, but he can't fight them either." Elijah crossed his arms,"He's most likely been repressing all sexual urges for quite some time."

"The first victim, Craig Pickett, represents a fall from the wagon, if you will. Interocurse between the two men was most likely the UnSub's trigger." Rossi added.

"Immediately after copulation, the male's serotonin levels drop. The high is achieved during sex. That rapid change can manifest itself in extreme depression and low self-esteem." Reid explained.

"Combined with an apparent belief that acting on his attraction towards other men is wrong, this state causes the UnSub to lash out violently at those he's with." Alex nodded.

"As his levels normalize, he begins to feel remorse for what he's done and he tries to correct his course." Rossi continued.

"This is where Heather and Michelle come in. After killing Craig, the UnSub sought out women that he was desperate to be attracted to." Morgan sighed.

"But he's trapped in a scenario with an impossible outcome." Elijah shook his head,"He can't force himself to like women, so when he's unable to get aroused, he becomes depressed again and lashes out in anger to the people he blames for his impotence. "

"The circular logic dictating his never ending cycle was not formed overnight. It most likely came about due to years of serious abuse, either emotional, physical or both." Reid shrugged.

"The most popular motive for trying to overcome same-sex attraction is the need to be accepted by the parent or loved one who has rejected the individual for their homosexuality." Blake told them.

"So focus on men who grew up in a broken home and suffered under the guardianship of a domineering parent, as well as those who fell victim to bigotry or bullying." Morgan nodded.

"The bottom line is this Unsub will not stop killing. With each failed attempt to be aroused by women or to avoid giving in to his same-sex urges, he becomes more desperate and more dangerous. Thank you." Hotch finished.

*********************************

"Getting a 411 on a 622 is not easy. I am looking up that date, and June 22nd has been quite eventful in a recent history." Garcia typed.

"It sounds like Miss Thing's got something good." Morgan hummed, sitting down with his coffee.

"Well, let's see. On this date in 1990, Florida banned the wearing of thong bikinis."

"I said good, baby girl." He reminded her.

"Right, right, okay." Garcia chuckled,"Let's see, June 22nd 1992, Supreme Court ruled Minnesota hate crime laws violated frew speech. The defendant burned a cross on the front yard of an African American family's house who lived next door."

"Nothing in the Unsub's profile suggests racial motivation, though." Reid tilted his head.

"No, but the cross has me thinking. Many religious beliefs suggest that following through on homosexual desires invites condemnation. What if the UnSub is struggling with his faith?" Rossi asked.

"Garcia, are there any 6:22 Bible passages that are relevant?" Elijah questioned as he began to try and think.

"Yeah, I thought of that, but the most popular one is Matthew 6:22, and it has to do with lights and eyes. I don't see how that fits." Garcia shook her head.

"Alright, let's look at this another way. What are the passages that specifically relate to homosexuality?" Morgan raised a brow.

"That's it. He's not saying 6:22. He's saying 18:22. As in Leviticus 18:22." Elijah looked up before quoting,"Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind for it is an abomination."

"He converted 18:22 to 6:22pm. Like military time." Fleur nodded.

"Maybe the Unsub suffered abuse at the hands of someone citing God's will that he should change." Reid suggested.

"It wouldn't be the first time someone took the good book and twisted it for their own agenda." Rossi sighed.

"Okay, but if you wanted to change someone's sexual orientation, how could you do it? I mean, you're not gonna guilt someone into that." Morgan crossed his arms.

"I'm seeing some stuff about an ex-gay movement. It looks like some kind of twelve step program." Garcia added.

"A twelve step program doesn't usually traumatize the participant." Rossi shook his head.

"But conversion therapy might." Reid sighed, "Several conversion camps have been shut down recently cause their methods border on torture."

"Yeah, but why would any faith condone the torture of children?" Morgan questioned as Elijah shrank in his seat.

"None of them would. Even a religious that frowns on homosexuality. None of them would cross that line." Rossi shook his head.

"Garcia, are there conversion camps in the area?" Morgan asked her.

"Uh..I got a hit. Camp Willing operates just outside of Austin. Their motto is, 'it's time to change'. And guess what biblical passage is on their home page." Garcia sighed.

*********************************

Elijah had his arms crossed tightly across his body as he and Fleur walked towards the conversion camp with a worker, Connor Drake.

"Our main purpose is to promote positive changes for the xonflicted individuals who come here." Drake hummed.

"There doesn't seem to be much room for self-expression." Elijah commented.

"We try to keep things as uniform as possible. We're not trying to stifle them. It's just that progressive behaviour in many ways can unravel their recovery efforts?"

"Such as colours?" Elijah blinked.

"Earth tones like brown or tan are the go to. Navy blue if the colour doesn't fade or become too bright." He shrugged.

"Because bright blue would be considered too feminine?" Fleur nodded slowly.

"Exactly." Drake agreed.

And the auto shop aids in conversion how?" Fleur raised a brow.

"We've found that immersing the boys in traditional male gender roles stimulates an appreciation of their own masculinity." He told them,"I know it seems extreme, but you have to remember, our participants are in a fragile state of mind. They come here confused, looking for answers. We show them that the path to redemption doesn't need to be walked alone."

"You sound like you speak from experience." Fleur hummed.

"I'm a graduate." Drake smiled,"The camp taught me to reject societal influences that were steering me in the wrong direction. And now, I try to pass that knowledge on. Come."

The couple looked at each other before following Drake.

"When a new participant arrives we have to evaluate their personal property before it can be retured to them. Items like musical soundtracks or diaries are destroyed. Long hair is cut, dyed hair shaved, no earrings. That sort of thing." Drake shrugged.

"The watch is standard issue?" Elijah raised a brow, noticing watches on the wrists of some of the boys as they passed by.

"Cell phones aren't permitted. The watches are so that no one will be late to any of their lessons. Structure and timeliness become an important part of promoting change." Drake added.

"And what if someone breaks the rules?" He tilted his head.

"It's uncommon."

"Uncommon, but not unheard of."

"Occasionally, a student will act out or reject certain elements of the program." Drake shrugged.

"What happens to those who act out?" He questioned.

"Advanced therapy under supervision of a senior counselor." He explained.

"Could you be more specific?" Elijah raised a brow.

"I'm afraid I can't. Parents and staff sign confidentiality agreements to protect the parent's right to privacy."

"What about the children's rights?" Fleur sighed.

Drake stayed quiet before he stopped and turned to face them,"Was there anything else I could help you with, Agents?"

"Yes. We'd like a list of program participants dating back the past fifteen years." Fleur hummed.

"All we want are names." Elijah added.

"That's quite impossible. Those records are confidential." Drake shook his head.

"Well, let's make them unconfidental. Or we'll be back here with a court order." Elijah pointed.

"Of course.. Come with me." He nodded.

*********************************

Fleur and Elijah remained at the camp while the others stopped Paul and saved Mitchell as the SWAT and other officers arrived and began breaking down doors and escorting away adults, including Drake. When SWAT and the duo walked into one of the locked rooms, there were boys with IVs in their arms, doped out while they 'watched' a scene of intercourse in front of them. They helped the boys out, assisting them over to ambulances but as soon as he was done, Elijah covered his face.

"Eli.." Fleur walked over to him.

"Flo.. Those boys." Elijah looked up.

"I know." Fleur sighed,"But we saved them."

"Some people.. I just don't understand them." Elijah shook his head.

"It's because they don't understand people who are different."

"They didn't need fixing- It's not.." Elijah stopped himself as he rubbed his eyes,"These cases always hit hard."

Fleur sighed and hugged him,"I know."

Elijah hugged her back,"But hey, I've always got the best little sister on my side."

"Who else?" Fleur chuckled.

"Nobody as scary as you." Elijah hummed

"I'm not scary." Fleur gasped.

"Uh, yes you are."

"How?"

"Have you seen how you look when you're angry?" Elijah questioned,"If looks could kill, you'd be a serial killer."

"I don't know if that's a compliment or not.." Fleur looked at him.

"You take it however you want." He hummed.

"Come on, we better get back to the others." Fleur nudged him.

"Well, you are always right." Elijah nodded.

"Oh, I know." Fleur chuckled.
