Chapter 9 - Charm and Harm

In the office, Fleur was at her desk and put down the phone. She could feel eyes on her,"What?"

"Well, we've only been here one hour and you've answered two calls." Morgan told her.

"Okay, and?" Fleur shrugged.

"You hate the phone, Fleur." Elijah hummed as he blew on his nails.

"I do not hate the phone." Fleur shook her head.

"Actually, you do." Reid then looked up at them,"Hey, did you know that Alexander Graham Bell and Eli Gray both simultaneously created electronic sound transmission devices? It came down to a race betwixt the two."

"Yeah, and Bell beat Gray to the patent office by a matter of hours. Common knowledge." Elle hummed.

"Why are you acting so weird?" Elijah looked up at her.

"Eli. We're sitting with a guy who knows there are eight hundred kernels of corn on the average cob-"

"Arranged in sixteen separate rows." Reid added.

"And you're calling me weird?" Fleur pointed.

"You're getting some loving, aren't you? You got a boyfriend." Morgan's eyes widened slightly.

"You are basing this on what, exactly? The fact I don't like the phone? That's all you got? That's your best? You've been a profiler for how long, Derek? That's weak." Fleur laughed.

"What's weak?" JJ asked as she walked over.

"Morgan thinks Fleur has a boyfriend~" Elijah smirked.

"Nothing." Fleur got up.

"Nothing. See? You just denied it." Morgan pointed.

"Do you?" JJ turned.

"It's more fun not to answer thar question." Fleur shrugged as they walked.

"That right there's a yes, baby. I knew it, I told you." Morgan crossed his arms.

"She didn't really admit to anything." Reid shook his head.

"Reid, trust me, you've got a lot to learn." Elijah winked.

"FBI Tampa has been investigating a series of murders over the past two months along Florida's Central Gulf Coast." JJ began the debrief as they all sat down.

"I consulted with the SAC down there, they had a very strong lead." Gideon nodded.

"And DNA evidence. All four women were killed by this man, Mark Gregory." JJ showed a picture.

"Wait, if they know who he is then he's not really an Unsub. Why are they calling us in?" Reid asked.

"They were unable to arrest him before he disappeared." JJ sighed.

"They let a serial killer get away? How long has he been missing?" Elijah blinked.

"About thirty six hours, along with this woman, Nicole Wegener." JJ then showed another picture.

"What do we know about the other victims?" Hotch asked her.

"They were all abducted within a sixty mile radius, tortured then drowned in hotel bathtubs. They were found a couple days after they were reported missing." JJ explained.

"Same geographical area and he's killing in hotels as opposed to private, controlled environments." Morgan leaned back in his chair.

"Well, he can pay for privacy in a hotel room." Elle shrugged.

"Let's just hope he's not heading for Orlando. It's second only to Las Vegas in numbers of hotel rooms." Reid explained.

"Well, knowing who he is, is certainly part of the equation, but it's a long way from knowing where he is." Fleur told them.

"A serial killer who's been sussed out and on the loose, he's got two choices." Morgan sighed,"He's either hiding, or worse, on the run."

"And if Gregory feels he'd got nothing to lose.." Hotch trailed off.

"He's got the whole country ahead of him." Gideon sighed.

*********************************

"Alright, this is everything the Tampa office has on Mark Gregory. He's a single, white, thirty eight year old. Graduated from FSU, started his own real estate company with a business parter five years ago. He frequently travels for work around the country, sometimes overseas. Just last year he purchased a very lavish home in Sarasota." JJ handed out the case files.

"What was he doing before he go into real estate?" Morgan asked.

"Says he raced cars after college, even worked as a chef at a French restaurant." JJ chuckled.

"Jack of all trades." Fleur nodded.

"Yeah, he's pretty mastered. He worked as a staff photographer for a couple magazines along the south coast before transitioning to work with models in Miama." Hotch sighed.

"It's strange so many serial killers make a hobby of photography. Must have something to do with the act of voyeurism." Reid leaned against the wall.

"What about his bank accounts and credit cards?" Elijah asked, looking up from the file.

"They seized everything after he disappeared thirty six hours ago."

"So if he uses his credit cards or goes to his house or work then they've got him." Elle shrugged.

"I've heard enough about Mark Gregory. I want to hear about his victims." Gideon drank his water.

*********************************

"Gregory used different forms of torture with each one. Choking, burning, suspension and beating. Drowning was the only constant." Hotch told them.

"They were all classified as wet drowning which means the victim was alive when they were submerged. They could feel their lungs filling up with water. It's an extremely painful way to die." Reid explained.

"Why would he take the time?" JJ asked,"They were barely alive after all the torture."

"Well drowning is a way of torture too, its all apart of his signature." Hotch nodded, a man walking into the room.

"SSA Raymond McCarthy." He introduced himself.

"SSA Jason Gideon, we spoke on the phone." Gideon shook McCarthy's hand.

"Sorry for the temporary setup, we wanted you closer to where Mark Gregory lives." He explained,"Please, continue."

"Oh we were just discussing drawing as a cleansing ritual." Reid hummed.

"If we look into Gregory's childhood, we may find what he needs to purge." Elijah suggesed.

"You think that's the best use of our time? We're itching to find this guy, he got away on our watch." McCarthy sighed.

"Well, by studying his behavior as a child, it helps us understand why he does what he does." Hotch crossed his arms.

"You know everything about this killer, except why he does it. So the further back we go, the further ahead of him we might get." Gideon told him.

"Were you able to connect Gregory to all four victims?" Morgan asked.

"He had a previous relationship with the first woman he killed." McCarthy told them

"We can look into that as a possible stresser." Elle nodded.

"The second and third were acquaintances from business deals. The forth worked at a restaurant the same time he did." Mccarthy continued.

"What's his connection to the missing girl?" Elijah raised a brow.

"We can't find anything. Gregory's big news in Florida. When do we hold a press conference to alert the entire country?" McCarthy turned to them all.

"Hopefully we'll find Gregory before we have to." JJ answered.

"So if we split up, we'll cover more ground. Does he still have family in the area?" Fleur looked at McCarthy.

"His dad is close by." McCarthy nodded.

"Why don't we start from the present and work our way backwards? Reid, Dean and I will go to Gregory's House." Gideon pointed.

"Elle and I will talk with the business partner, Hank Bloomberg." Hotch nodded.

"I'll comb through the evidence here." JJ picked up some files.

"Garcia's gonna want an update, Fleur and I will catch up with her." Morgan told them.

"Good. Let's meet back here in two hours." Gideon clapped,"If he's following a previous pattern we have less than twelve hours to find Nicole Wegener alive."

*********************************

"This is a really large house with hardly any furniture." Reid looked around.

"Typical bachelor pad. Large sofa, big screen tv, white walls.' Gideon inspected the house.

"I noticed a luxury car in the garage but it's at least ten years old." Reid informed them.

"Where are the dogs?" Elijah looked down at two metal dog bowls.

"Gideon, Elijah, check this out." Reid walked into a closet,"This guys got about twenty different suits. Some Italian, some tailored, some leisure suits."

"Hey, he's got a mechanic's uniform too." Elijah picked it up as he and Gideon walked in,"With a wide variety of watches and wallets."

"Approximately twenty different pairs of shoes." Reid pointed.

"Look at all those driver's licenses. He could start his own DMV. Feed those to Garcia."Gideon instructed as he walked out,"He travels up and down the country to buy and sell different properties."

"Probably reinvents himself with each deal that he makes. You know?" Reid shrugged,"Plays a different role."

"Dresses up to impress a rich investor, dresses down for a poor farmer." Elijah put his hands in his pockets,"He's like a chameleon, adapting for any situation."

"You know from the outside this house seems clean and shiny, but it's all for show. Like it's a facade to hide what's really going on." Reid and Elijah walked out to meet Gideon.

"Drawer full of catalogs." Gideon pulled them out,"Uniforms for law enforcement, construction, janitorial, military. What do you think he needs these for?"

"Probably has something to do with this." Reid handed Gideon a notebook,"Someone's trying to disguise himself."

Gideon flicked through the book, various disguises like facial hair and glasses over the same face. Gregory's face.

"I'm going to check the other room." Reid walked into the room they hadn't checked yet.

"I'll come with you." Elijah nodded slowly, following him.

"You seen anything yet?"

"Nope."

Reid sighed and put his gloves on, beginning to rummage through the drawers.

"Uh, Reid." Elijah turned to him,"I'm sorry."

"Hm?" Reid looked up,"What for?"

"I was acting like a bit of an asshole when we were on Lila's case." Elijah sighed.

"Oh... I understand why."

"You do?" Elijah blinked.

"We've been best friends for years now, it was probably weird to see me bonding with someone that wasn't a team member." Reid shrugged.

"Yeah- Yeah, I was hoping you wouldn't notice." Elijah chuckled nervously.

Reid walked up and patted his arm,"Besides, Lila and I aren't talking anymore. She has a new boyfriend."

"Oh-Well, that just means your stuck with me as your best friend." Elijah hummed.

"I wouldn't mind that." Reid smiled.

"You don't get a choice, pretty boy." Elijah chuckled.

Elijah swore he could see Spencer's smile brighten at the nickname before he turned away.

"Anyway, let's go back to Gideon." He sighed.

"Good idea." Elijah nodded.

*********************************

"Angels, Mark Gregory was such a bad boy." Garcia hummed.

"How bad?" Fleur asked.

"Well, when he was like, a kid, he was caught peeking into his neighbors window." Garcia began.

"And I'm sure it gets worse, right?" Morgan rubbed his bridge of his nose.

"Mhm, at the ripe age of eighteen he... How do I put this delicately, had an intense affection for ladies with learner's permits." Garcia sighed.

"Sounds like statutory rape, I'm not surprised." Fleur shrugged.

"You talk to Hotch?" Morgan tilted his head.

"Yeah, it turns out his marriage only lasted twenty-three days, our boy's got commitment issues." Garcia told him,"And do not fret, my sweets, that poor girl he married is still out there somewhere. If she were dead, it would've been much easier to find her."

"Well that's a good thing because we're going to want to talk to her. Some of his deviant behaviour must've leaked into other parts of his life. At least she got out alive." Morgan sighed.

*********************************

"Wow, Mark Gregory splurges on hotel rooms, doesn't he?" Morgan looked around.

"Great guy." Fleur looked out the window,"He offers them a nice, warm robe right before he drowns them."

"He spent a lot of time with Nicole Wegener. Picked her up from Tampa, drove her all the way to Georgia." Morgan took out the file,"But unlike his other victims, there was no type of relationship to link the two of them."

"A random victim with her whole life ahead of her. She was beautiful." Fleur sighed.

"She was also a stranger, which means he had to lure her somehow." Morgan shook his head.

"Mark Gregory, photographer." Fleur held out his business card that she picked up.

"So, what if he preyed on this woman's vanity?" Morgan suggested,"He's a photographer, he offers her a professional modeling career."

"Well, if he has a legitimate website and portfolio, right credentials, why wouldn't she trust him?" Fleur shrugged.

"And a perfected ruse would explain how he was able to get her through the lobby of a five-star hotel with nobody looking." Morgan shook his head,"It's only a matter of time before he finds himself another victim."

*********************************

"I still can't understand how my son could he responsible for this." Gregory's father paced.

"Your son is a narcissist with split-personality. He's able to gain his victim's trust before inflicting pain on them. This is most likely derived from an incredible amount of self-awareness." Reid explained.

"Mark has mastered the art of manipulation, only allows you to see his good side." Gideon told him.

"This is a nightmare." He sighed.

"Why don't you sit down, Mr Gregory?" Elijah suggested, looking to the sofa

Mr Gregory sighed and sat down on the sofa, Gideon and Reid sitting down on the other two chairs as Elijah stood.

"You moved around a lot when Mark was growing up?" Gideon sat down, crossing his legs.

"Mark never complained. I guess its because he was always so good at making friends. He fits in wherever he went." Mr Gregory nodded.

"We know he's been to Georgia. Do you know where else he might go? Any placed he loved to visit? Anywhere he'd call home?" Gideon listed off.

"He lived here the longest, he would consider Florida home." Mr Gregory told them.

"Mark's mother isn't in any of the photos." Elijah pointed out as he looked at them.

"Elizabeth died in a car accident." Mr Gregory explained.

"Oh- I'm sorry." Elijah blinked.

"How old was Mark when it happened?" Reid asked.

"Ten."

"Were they close?" Elijah raised a brow.

"She was his mother." Mr Gregory rolled his eyes.

"Typically, when a child loses a mother, he sees her as a victim. Theoretically, he'd want to protect women and would more likely to lash out against his father, blaming men for needing punishment, but Mark didn't do that." Reid crossed his arms.

"Because you are Mark were close." Gideon explained.

"Well, yes." Mr Gregory sighed.

"Any reason why he would've blamed his mother for the death? Was she drinking and driving? Falling asleep at the wheel?" Elijah listed things off as he paced.

"No, no, no. Nothing like that." Mr Gregory shook his head.

"Maybe he blames her because he thinks she abandoned him?" Reid suggested.

"The loss of a female figure could explain why... Peeping Tom in adolescence." Gideon shrugged.

"Are you telling me that young boys aren't curious?" Mr Gregory scoffed.

"Sure, they're curious, but not all of them peek into windows." Elijah shook his head,"What about the statutory rape charge?"

"Oh no. Mark had just turned eighteen and his girlfriend was fifteen. They were kids for God's sake. It was her parents that pressed charges." Mr Gregory pointed.

"So... Did Mark ever have to take responsibility for anything?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Look, what are you saying? That being a protective parent has turned my child into a killer?" Mr Gregory scoffed.

"No, we're saying you're making excuses. I'm sure that didn't do him any favors." Gideon shrugged.

*********************************

"Based on these interviews it looks like the first victim wasn't being unfaithful. She had a husband and was trying to keep it a secret." Hotch explained.

"Sounds like he found out." Elijah put his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah, there must have been something major in his past to trigger such an extreme reaction." Hotch looked at the computer

"Maybe something in his parents' relationship that scarred him during childhood?" Reid suggested.

"Hey guys, I found Mark Gregory's car Atlanta International Airport." Garcia spoke from call.

"That's pretty smart. There's a sea of cars at the airport." McCarthy nodded.

"But he parked in short term and he got a ticket." She sighed.

"There must have been another reason for him to dump it there." Hotch shook his head.

"Guys, I know we ruled out flying but it's hard to ignore the fact that his last known location was a place that literally had thousands of International flights a day." Reid pointed out.

"Thousands of people, all possible victims." Gideon sighed.

"Hey Garcia, is it possible to run the facial recognition software at the airport?" Hotch raised a brow.

"I'm already on it. I went ahead and started with the security footage from the parking garage since we know he was there." Garcia answered.

"Knowing what he looks likes got to be some advantage to us."

"And... It is. I'm uploading it to you right now." Garcia told him.

"Got it. Thanks." Hotch nodded, turning on the footage.

The footage showed Mark in his most recent disguise lingering behind a young woman, although he left her alone, walking off.

"She seemed like his type." McCarthy pointed.

"Yeah." They nodded.

"He's looking for the easiest target. He doesn't have time to waste on her." Hotch told them

"Who doesn't trust a man in uniform?" Elijah sighed as Mark approached another young woman, helping put her stuff inside her car.

"He helps her.. She returns the favor and gives him a ride." Hotch nodded as they both got into the car.

"Fatal mistake." Gideon sighed.

*********************************

Fleur put her fries down,"You really don't know someone until you take a road trip with them."

"What are you trying to say?" Morgan asked, taking a sip from his can.

Fleur blinked,"Look at this car. There's empty soda cans and fast food wrappers everywhere. You are a slob, Derek Morgan. You know, back at Quantico, your desk is all neat, but I bet you if you looked in those drawers, you'd find a mess." She pointed.

"Okay, we have been on the road for way too long." Morgan nodded slowly as Fleur's phone rang,"Oh, that must be the boyfriend."

"Yes, it is." Fleur hummed and answered,"Hey Elijah."

"Elijah?" Morgan blinked.

Fleur smirked,"I got it, hun... Bye babe." She wrote down what Elijah told her before hanging up,"They found the woman from the Atlanta airport in South Carolina."

"Y'know, it feels like we're driving body to body." Morgan sighed, shaking his head.

"Yeah, well we know that South Carolina's part of his business route. So he's probably going back to what he knows." Fleur started the car.

*********************************

Elijah watched Reid as he stared intently at the evidence board before he slid over on his chair,"See something?"

"No, I was just thinking about the information we released about Mark Gregory at the press conference." Reid turned to him.

"What about it?" Elijah raised a brow, looking up at Reid.

"Well, we described him as someone who's engaging, confident, poses as people with authority, but this is a guy who's flying under the radar." Reid explained.

"So, what, did we make a mistake?"

"No, not at all, no. We're dealing with a killer who's highly intelligent and incredibly resourceful. You would think that we've pushed him to change what he's doing." Reid crossed his arms.

"To what?" Elijah asked,"Has he upgraded?"

"Maybe he's not using a simple ruse anymore?" Reid suggested.

"He could alter his appearance so he's barely recognizable, like he did in the sketchbook." Elijah pointed.

"If he does that then we have no idea what we're looking for." Reid shook his head.

*********************************

"Hey Gideon." Fleur opened her phone, putting it on speaker.

"We think Mark's first victim was his mother." Gideon spoke.

"What?" Morgan blinked.

"I'm sorry, you're saying a ten year old killed his own mom?" Garcia questioned.

"Well it's a common theory that sons can fixate on their mothers since their mothers are their introduction to love." Hotch shrugged.

"And if that mother had a negative influence on him, in this case she was an adulteress, it invalidated not just the father, it reflected negatively onto the son." Reid explained.

"Mark Gregory was a child, but he was old enough to understand what his mother was doing. He was protecting a weak, impotent, passive aggressive father who wanted his wife dead. He read the old man like a book and lived the life he couldn't." Gideon told them.

"Since she was his mother, he viewed her as a saint but because she was a cheater, he also viewed her as a sinner." Elijah sighed.

"Theres a good chance he caused the car to crash." Gideon shrugged.

"Do you think the father knew his son was a murderer?" McCarthy asked.

"Oh yes, definitely." Elijah nodded.

"It's why he's so overprotective of him." Gideon clasped his hands.

"We need to go through all the evidence from the car accident, absolutely everything." Hotch told Garcia.

"News articles, medical records, police reports. I am on it." Garcia typed.

"We need it as quickly as possible. He's a serial killer on the run and he's grabbing women as he sees them." Hotch shook his head.

The call ended and Garcia then sent over some more evidence.

"Here's the police photo of the car Gregory's mother was killed in. Right there, see the water dripping from under the car?" Hotch pointed to the picture.

"It doesn't look like it would be a fatal car crash, all the damage was done to the passenger side." Reid explained before lookingup at Hotch,"What was her official cause of death?"

"I'll ask Garcia." Hotch shook his head.

"We've got a possible abduction. Kelly Dalton, twenty-eight." McCarthy walked over, holding a photo,"Eyewitnesses saw her leaving a parking lot with a man who resembled Gregory. She was supposed to pick up her son, never made it."

"So he's got a victim and a car. Now all he needs is the location." Hotch sighed.

"Okay, there are five sources of water nearby.' Garcia told him,"The closest to the accident is... Rock Creek in.."

"Copperhill, Tennessee. That's where Kelly Dalton was abducted. Morgan and Fleur are there now." Reid looked up.

"Reid, one more thing, Elizabeth Gregory's official cause of death was asphyxia, caused by immersion in fluid." Garcia informed him.

"She drowned?" Hotch turned.

"With no discernable damage done to her, keeping her trapped in the car what would cause a taller mother to drown and a smaller son to survive?" Reid asked.

"There's only one way." Elijah shook his head,"Mark Gregory held his mother's head under whatever water was in the car."

"His first kill was his most powerful. Well, at least we know where he's going. Back to where it all started." Gideon walked over to the board.

"The police report said the accident happened on route sixty, near East-West highway." Gideon told Fleur.

"We're on route sixty about a quarter of a mile of Rock Creek. I'm pulling over, we'll check it out." Fleur nodded as her and Morgan got out of the car, looking around,"Yeah, Gideon he's not here."

That's when they heard a car horn blaring in the distance.

"You guys hear that?" Morgan asked.

"Yeah, I heard it." Fleur looked in the direction of the horn.

"It's over there. C'mon, let's go." Morgan pointed as he started running.

The cops in the other car sped over to the site, meanwhile Fleur and Morgan ran through the woods to find them. They soon found Kelly's car, wrecked. But it was empty, nobody in sight.

"It's clear, there's nobody in the car." Morgan shook his head.

Fleur cursed and called Elijah,"We just found the car, I'll keep you posted." She then turned to the cops,"Which way to the water?"

"It's over there." An officer pointed, causing Morgan to run towards it.

They then saw Mark fighting Kelly in the water, Kelly then hit Mark with a metal pipe, although Mark took the pipe away from her, raising it in the air.

"Mark Gregory, FBI. Put it down. Put it down!" Morgan shouted, although he was ignored by Gregory so he shot him.

Fleur rushed over to Kelly, lifting her into her arms,"I got you, you're okay."

Morgan helped Mark Gregory out of the lake and took him over the medics who loaded him into the ambulance. It was over.
