Chapter 84 - The Apprenticeship

"I'm going to tell him now." Reid sighed as he was on call, Elijah was walking into the bedroom as he heard him speak.

"Tell me what?" Elijah asked slowly, leaning against the doorframe.

"Elijah." Reid hung up.

"Spencer?"

Reid sighed,"..Sit down."

Elijah crossed his arms as he sat down on the bed.

"So.. You know how my migraines have been getting worse?"

"Mhm?" He nodded slowly.

"I've found this Geneticist, her name is Meave and she's been helping me for the past few weeks.. The reason I couldn't tell you is because she has a stalker. A dangerous one. Like- UnSub level dangerous. I can't even meet with her so she can do a proper diagnosis, she doesn't leave the house because of the stalker." Reid explained.

"So.. You're not cheating on me?"

"Cheating on you? No! No, God no. She's not my type. You are." Reid smiled.

Elijah leaned against his shoulder,"..You scared me there."

"Don't ever think like that. She and I got worried that you would think like that so she allowed me to tell you." Reid took ahold of his hand.

"She worried about me?" Elijah chuckled softly.

"She knows what you're like, I've told her."

Elijah kissed his cheek,"If she ever needs my help, you know I will."

"I'm sorry I never told you." Reid sighed.

"Don't worry about it, you needed to keep her safe." Elijah shook his head.

"I love you." He sighed.

"I love you more, il mio genio." Elijah hummed.

*********************************

Reid placed a baseball into the throwing machine, the ball flying at Morgan and he hit it with the bat, "Okay, you see my hips? You swing right through, nice and easy. Okay, Reid, you give it a try."

"It was just a ride to the airport. This wasn't exactly what I had in mind when I said I owed you one." Reid sighed.

"Hey, you act like is torture." Morgan hummed,"Y'know, there's people who think that this is fun."

"I find it fun watching." Fleur raised her hand.

"See? Fleur thinks it's fun." Morgan pointed.

"Believe it or not, most of my childhood sports memories aren't altogether pleasant." Reid shook his head.

"Reid. It's just one game. We need a body. Elijah can't do it, and you might not even need to play." Morgan sighed.

"Why can't you do it?" Reid called to him.

"Because I'm at a great risk of injury and I've got a crippling fear of baseball bats." Elijah shrugged.

"Just humor me?" Derek looked at Reid,"Take the bat, go up there and give it a try."

Reid sighed and took the bat, walking towards the base.

"See it and relax.. Here we go." Derek hummed.

The ball then shot out at Reid. He looked up, swung and... Missed completely.

"First try.. Okay. Keep your eye on the ball." Morgan pointed.

"Think he has it?" Fleur asked Elijah.

"Of course not, but I won't tell him that." Elijah whispered as Reid mumbled to himself.

"I see what you're saying. If I can adjust the velocity of my swing-"

"No, what I'm saying is get out of your head. Just feel it." Morgan cut him off.

"Feel it.. Feel it."

"Don't think. Just feel it."

"Don't think, just feel it. Okay." Reid muttered as the ball was thrown at him, once again missing it.

"Reid, that's not feeling it." Morgan put his hands on his hips.

"I'm feeling like an idiot." Reid cursed.

"That's because you aren't feeling it." Elijah told him.

"I can't feel it." Reid groaned.

"Lucky day, we just got a case." Fleur looked at her phone.

"Yes, thank god." Reid sighed.

"Last night in Miami, the body of Amanda Lopez was found in an alley. She had been brutally beaten and suffocated." Garcia explained.

"Twenty-three years old, originally from Tampa, ran away from her foster home when she was sixteen years old." Morgan read from the file.

"Runaway and prostitute. She couldn't be more high risk." Blake sighed.

"And there was evidence of sexual assault, a lot of it." Garcia added.

"Occupational hazard. No way to tell if our UnSub is responsible for that." Rossi shook his head.

"Beating and suffocation. So, he's a sadist." Elijah nodded slowly.

"A lot of violence. Were there any other victims?" Reid looked up.

"Uh, actually, yes, but not the human variety. In the last month, six puppies have been suffocated and beaten, and thank God, there are no photos, because I draw the line at dead dogs." Garcia sighed.

"We sure it's the same guy?" Fleur asked.

"Identical DNA samples were found at all of the crime scenes, but no match in the CODIS database." Hotch told her.

"Even if there was a match, it might not give us an ID." JJ sighed.

"That sure is a lot of rage. I wonder why he's so angry." Morgan tilted his head.

"It's about the power. Suffocation takes work. He likes it up close and personal." Rossi explained.

"This Unsub's just graduated from animals to human victims. We need to stop him before he goes serial. Wheels up in thirty." Hotch pointed.

*********************************

"Amanda Lopez has no next of kin and no one reported her missing." JJ sighed.

"She was an easy target. The Unsub probably hoped for thay." Blake shook her head.

"The animals were all killed in a relatively small geographical radius, a mostly middle-class suburban area. But Amanda's body was found on the other side of town in Miami's skid row." Reid explained.

"So he left his comfort zone to kill his first human." Rossi nodded.

"A choice he probably made out of necessity." Fleur added.

"It's hard to find easy targets in middle-class residential areas." Morgan agreed.

"He may be young. Typically you see violence to animals in children and teens." Reid nodded.

"But the jump to humans is usually made in their mid twenties." Rossi pointed.

"Eh, Thomas Dillon started killing at thirty nine." Blake pointed back.

"Joseph Duncan was.. Forty-three?" JJ added.

"Usually." Rossi rolled his eyes.

"Either way, this guy's moving fast." Elijah sighed,"His animal kills were only days apart."

"He enjoys it. And now that he's gotten a taste for humans, he's gonna need another fix soon." Rossi told them.

"Dave, you, Howards and Blake go to the M.E. Morgan, Deans and Reid to the crime scenes. JJ, you're with me." Hotch instructed

*********************************

"Her jaw, orbital bones were fractured in several places." Fleur sighed.

"And be did it with his bare hands. I wouldn't be surprised if he broke one of them." The conorner added,"See here. He started beating with his right and he finished with his left."

"No defensive wounds." Rossi nodded.

"He caught her by surprise in a blitz attack." Blake shook her head.

"This took anger and stamina. He's in shape or on drugs." Rossi sighed.

"Or in shape and on drugs." Blake pointed.

"The actual cause of death, suffocation." The coroner told them.

"So he beats her into submission and the suffocates her with the bag." Rossi nodded.

"We also found alcohol in her system. She was fairly lit when he killed her." The coroner sighed.

"It helps that she's what, barely a hundred pounds? Easier to subdue?" Blake crossed her arms.

"I don't think he was a big guy himself. You can tell by the bruising, he's got small hands." She gestured towards the hand marks

"All that rage. And even with his animal victims. He must be getting off on the violence." Rossi shook his head.

"So he's a sexual sadist." Fleur nodded.

"A young, inexperienced one." Rossi added,"He's disorganized, sloppy. And he killed and dumped her in a high-traffic area. He's too impulsive to be an older guy."

"He's lucky, too. The alleys near a major thoroughfare. It's a miracle nobody saw anything." Blake sighed.

*********************************

"The last dog was found in these bushes over here." Morgan pointed as they walked,"The other dogs were found in a similar park not far away."

"Except for the one found in an alley about a mile from here." Reid sighed.

"Reid." Elijah pointed ahead to a young couple, making out,"You remember those days?"

"Not really." Reid shook his head.

"Well, where did you hang out as a teenager?" He asked.

"Library, chemistry lab, library.." Reid counted off.

"No, no, no. We're talking about normal, non-genius, teenager type sfuff. Malls, coffee shops, parks.' Morgan told him.

"We passed a mall and two coffee shops on the way here." Reid realised.

"And a high school, too." Elijah nodded slowly.

"That would explain why the Unsub's so impulsive. He might still he an adolescent." Reid told them.

Morgan nodded before he pulled out his phone, calling Garcia.

"I thought you'd never call. My ears are hungry. Your voice is like food." Garcia groaned.

"I need your help, sweetness." He told her.

"Yes! Your wish is my command." Garcia hummed.

"I need you to widen your search for violent offenders in the area to juveniles."

"Mmm, searching for bad boys is my specialty. I'll hit you with a list ASAP." Garcia nodded.

"Thank you, angel." Morgan smiled.

*********************************

"Based on victim type and kill zone dynamics, we believe that we're looking for two white males, one significantly older than the other." Hotch began to give the profile.

"The younger Unsub we believe is an adolescent. He probably lives in the area, so odds are he's a student at a local high school." Rossi continued.

"We think the older UnSub is in his late 30s to early 40s. Now, he's sophisticated, so he probably has violent criminal experience." Morgan added.

"So you should be looking at ex-cons, and we can't rule out people who've had law enforcement training." JJ nodded.

"The older one had access to teenagers, but somehow he didn't stick out." Fleur sighed.

"Which means he most likely lives or works near an area where young people congregate." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Like a school, church, or a community center. Now he's also charismatic, the type of guy that a teen would easily trust. Maybe a teacher or a coach." Morgan suggested.

"Much like the DC Snipers, John Allen Muhammed and Lee Boyd Malvo, this is a mentor/mentee relationship, where the older one is trying to teach the younger one how to become a better killer." Reid explained,"This dynamic is rare, but the symbiotic nature of their mutual desires actually strengthens their affinity for one another."

"There's a chance they're related. We should consider a father and son team, brothers, or possibly an uncle and nephew." JJ added.

"But even if there is no biological connection, this relationship has all the hallmarks of that kind of bond." Rossi told them.

"The younger ones probably looking for a father figure, trying to fill some emotional void." Fleur nodded.

"They prey on prostitutes, so put the word on the street to any of the working girls you might know." Elijah pointed.

*********************************

"So Jose rolls up on the younger UnSub while he's doing his thing. But the older UnSub just happens to be there to come to his rescue?" Morgan asked.

"Or the older one was already there watching." Blake added.

"That attack happened months ago, so they've known each other at least that long." Rossi sighed.

"Why would a grown man in his 40s connect with a teenager?" JJ raised a brow.

"Easily explained if they're related." Blake pointed.

"Or if their relationship is sexual." Elijah nodded.

"Well, if they were related or having sex, there would probably be more of a connection and there might not be such a big disparity in their MOs." JJ sighed.

"The dominant partner might not even allow the submissive to participate in the kill." Rossi shook his head.

"If he's mentoring him, maybe it's because he wants to give back or leave some kind of legacy." Morgan suggested.

"Well, like in most cases, the dominant one probably initiated the contact." Hotch nodded.

"You think he sought the younger one out." Fleur looked up.

"That's usually how it goes." Rossi shrugged,"It takes talent to see talent."

"When and where they met is gonna be the key." Hotch sighed.

"It's only a matter of time before their partnership dissolves. In any teacher/ student dynamic there comes a day when the student no longer needs the teacher." Reid explained.

*********************************

"Hang on, I'm gonna put you on speaker." Morgan put Garcia on speaker,"Go ahead babygirl, what you got?"

"Ask an you shall receive. I widened my search, got a hit. One Rudi Stein. Had an affinity for hammering and chewing on hookers in New York. Convicted in '89. Had a massive stroke right there in the Sing Sing Prison yard, died last year."

"That MO is too similar to what we've seen not to be related." Rossi shook his head.

"But the timeline doesn't fit. Stein got locked up over twenty years ago." Blake pointed.

"What if the mentor got mentored himself?" Fleur suggested

"So you think Stein mentored put older Unsub?" Morgan asked.

"Then the UnSub learned his skills in prison." Hotch realised.

"There's a reason they call it Crime U." Rossi nodded.

"If the guy who took the time to mentor him suddenly died, that could have triggered his need to pay it forward." JJ told them.

"Garcia, I need everything you've got on Rudi Stein, cellmates, relatives, known associates, anything you can find." Hotch instructed.

"Will do, stay tuned, I'm out." Garcia hung up.

*********************************

"Hey, Morgan, come look at this stuff." Reid called to him as he dug through the bag,"Two different closets filled with this stuff, all unopened and unused."

"No dog lives here. I don't see a bowl or a crate or a leash, nothing." Derek shook his head.

"Everything was purchased from.. Hal's Pet Store."

"I found these under the bed." Fleur walked up with a box,"Haven't gone through every one but they go back to 2006."

"Well, that's the year Turner was released from prison." Morgan pointed,"Could be a habit he picked up inside."

"Loves sports. He's into leisure and travel. And..A big fan of murder."

"It's not random. He has individual sections for each case." Reid shook his head.

"It gets better." Fleur showed a file of all of the missing animal posters.

"This guy was tracking the animal murders." Morgan sighed.

"Every last one of them." She nodded.

"Hey, guys." Reid showed the pair a photo album.

Inside the album was a picture of an older man with a teenage boy.

"That looks like the boy from the composite sketch." Fleur sighed.

"Whoever the kid is, Tuner's obsessed with him." Morgan nodded before answering his phone,"Hey, mama. Tell me something good."

"Well, I cleaned out this nutbag's laptop. The guy was a torture porn connoisseur. I mean, the dude makes Rick James seem Amish. I also looked at his emails and social networks. He's been in touch a lot with a Toby Whitewood, and by a lot I mean, a couple, three times a day for the past year." Garcia told them.

"Well, what have you got on Whitewood?" He asked.

"He's a fifteen year old sophomore at McKinley High School. His parents divorced two years ago. He lives with his mom, Claire. That's about it, he's squeaky clean." Garcia sighed.

"Garcia, what about employment or volunteer activities?" Reid questioned.

"Pause. He works part time at Hals Pet Shop." She hummed.

"You got a picture of the kid?"

"Sent." She pressed the button to send it to them.

Fleur picked up her phone, showing the picture.

"Garcia, that's him. You got an adress?" Morgan asked her.

"Yep. Work address has been sent to you. Home address is actually closer to Hotch."

"Thanks." He nodded.

"That explains how he got close to Toby. Somehow he figured out who was committing the animal murders, he stalked him at his job and eventually earned his trust." Reid explained.

*********************************

After stopping both Turner and Toby, Elijah and Fleur were sat in the stands of the baseball game, just chatting really as not much had gone on.

"Do you know if Reid's gonna show?" Fleur leaned against Elijah.

"Well, he told me he would." Elijah nodded.

"Dyson's wife just had her baby, so Reid will be on." Fleur hummed.

"Oh, good for her."

"Hey, there he is." Fleur pointed as Reid walked in,"We better head down."

"I suppose we should." Elijah nodded as they got up,"Hey, pretty boy."

"Wh- Everyone's here?" Reid blinked.

"Trust me, babe. We wouldn't miss this for the world."

"So, Secret Service, huh?" JJ picked up Henry.

"Yeah, yeah. We haven't beat these chumps in five years." Morgan told them.

"They've got nothing to do but practice." Fleur chuckled.

"And party." Garcia added.

Garcia then placed a cap on Reid's head.

"Ah, there he is. Let's go baby." Morgan clapped.

"Well, we better head back to our seats." Elijah nodded,"Don't hurt yourself."

"I won't.. Hopefully." Reid sighed.

Everyone then walked over to the bleachers, sitting down. It had been a while and Spencer was finally up to swing.

"Come on, Spence. You can do it." JJ called to him.

"Strike one!" One of the Secret Service members shouted as Spencer missed.

The next two swings were misses and the game contiued, with Reid eventually stepping up to bat once more.

"You can do this!" Morgan clapped.

"This guy can't hit." One of the secret service men chuckled,"Bring it in."

"Time out!" Derek ran over to Reid, giving him a small pep talk, taking a minute before running back.

The game continued with Reid missing his first two shots, the secret service men adamant that they would win.

"Spencer, if you hit that ball, I'll give you a kiss." Elijah called down to him.

It took Reid a moment before he hit the ball, running around the base before making it back home.

"Yes! Yes! You did it! Yes!" Morgan cheered as he helped Reid to his feet, hugging him.

Reid laughed and looked at everyone as they ran towards the pitch.

"Right, I'm a man of my word." Elijah held his arms out.

Reid smiled, walking over to him once Morgan put him down and kissed him. Elijah wrapped his arms around Reid's neck as he kissed back.

"I knew you could do it." Fleur clapped.

"We all did." JJ smiled.
