Chapter 8 - Somebody's Watchin'
Elijah looked around the room of strangers and artwork, keeping close to Reid and Gideon. He had been given very strict instructions. Don't wander off, don't touch anything.
"Did you know we're near where Reid grew up?" Gideon looked at Elijah.
"I did not, I wasnt really listening." Elijah shook his head.
"Yeah... I grew up in Vegas." Reid admitted.
"Vegas is fun." Elijah nodded slowly,"I'm not a big fan of all the lights."
"You get used to it." Reid shrugged,"I'm actually banned from most, if not all, of the casinos here in Vegas."
"That was going to be my next question." Elijah sighed,"How did you manage that?"
"I guess you could say I'm too smart." He hummed.
"Who needs casinos with a brain like yours?" Elijah chuckled.
That's when a man walked over,"Spencer, Spencer Reid! Dude look at you, you haven't changed one bit. Spencer was the only twelve year old in our graduating class. Just the same."
"Thanks. Uh, this is Special Agent Jason Gideon and Special Agent Elijah Deans." Reid introduced them,"This is Parker Dunley. We went to high school together, as you've probably gathered."
"Hi, how are you?" Gideon nodded,"It's a beautiful gallery."
"Thank you, thank you." Dunley smiled.
"Jason's a big contemporary art enthusiast." Reid explained.
"Well, we're exhibiting four up and coming artists in this show. Everything's for sale and I could definitely swing a discount for a friend of.." Dunley trailed off as a woman walked in.
"Lila! Hey, guys come on." Dunley walked over to Lila.
"Do I look twelve years old to you two?" Reid asked.
"Fourteen?" Elijah hummed.
Reid shook his head as he and Elijah walked over to Dunley and Lila.
"Spencer, you ever meet a real movie star before?" Dunley turned to him.
"Movie star? Please. She has a supporting role on a television series about beach volleyball. Totally blue collar." The woman next to Lila scoffed.
"I'm Lila." She smiled at him
"Hi, I'm Doc-Doctor Spencer Reid, this is my friend Elijah Dean- Actually, I'm just Spencer, you don't have to call me Doctor, no one does." Reid rambled.
Elijah crossed his arms. Sure, Reid wasn't the best at conversations with strangers but this time... It felt different.
"I won't." Lila told him as a man began taking pictures of her.
"Hey- Man I told you no photos in the art gallery." Dunley pushed the man,"Alright? Out."
Dunley escorted the man with the camera out, leaving Lila and her friend with Elijah and Reid. Although her friend wandered off soon after, to talk with Gideon. A man then walked over, holding out a tray withglasses of champagne.
"Thanks." Lila smiled as she took one.
"No thank you." Reid shook his head.
Elijah shook his head as well and the man walked off.
"So, you're not from around here, are you?" Lila asked Reid.
"Me? No, no. We're running a training service about profiling for the Los Angeles Police Department." Reid shook his head,"Elijah here is from England."
"England, huh?" Lila looked over at him.
"Yes, I am." Elijah nodded,"I moved to Colorado as a child."
"That's interesting... But you mentioned profiling?" Lila tilted her head.
"Uh, yes. We're with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI." Reid explained,"We psychoanalyse crime scenes in order to gain a better understanding of the criminal who might've committed the ctime."
"Psychoanalyse, huh? Are you two doing that to me now?" Lila hummed.
"What- No. I'm not psychoanalysing you." Reid quickly shook his head,"I'm just.."
"I'm kidding. Come, look at this painting." Lila nodded to a painting.
The three of them walked up to a painting on the wall, Elijah standing slightly behind Lila and Reid.
"Does it make you feel anything?" Lila asked them.
"Like what?" Reid turned.
"I can't tell you how to feel." Lila chuckled.
"Right now I feel... Pretty good." Reid nodded with a smile.
"We're leaving." Gideon walked past them.
"Oh, thank god." Elijah muttered.
"We're still looking at the exhibit." Reid turned to Gideon.
"Now." Gideon shook his head,"Now, Reid."
Reid bit his cheek and turned to Lila,"Guess we're leaving- It was nice meeting you- On the way, bye."
"You too, Spencer." Lila smiled as he and Elijah jogged after Gideon.
"She seems nice." Reid hummed.
"Mhm." Elijah nodded.
*********************************
"Okay... First two victims, Wally Melman, Chloe Harris. Both killed public places." Fleur opened the file.
"Chloe was killed while walking her dog on a beach in Santa Monica which she did every morning and Wally was killed outside of a massage parlor." JJ explained.
"In Culver City." Morgan pointed.
"Which he went to every Tuesday." JJ continued.
"Well, if he knows their schedules, maybe that means he follows his victims for a while." Morgan suggested.
"And not a single witness. So we know this unsub can blend in. Regardless of the location, he has the ability to hide in plain sight." Hotch sighed.
"He's meticulous." Elle nodded.
"The media is calling Natalie Ryan's murder the biggest celebrity homicide since Sharon Tate." JJ drank her tea.
"What does that mean for us?" Elle asked.
"That everyone will be watching." Hotch looked down.
*********************************
"Miss me?" Fleur smiled as she walked up to Elijah at the office.
"More than I'd like to admit." Elijah sighed.
"I'm your emotional support friend."
"Right, I've got the gossip. Are you ready for it?" Elijah turned to her.
"You know it." Fleur sat on the desk.
"Right." Elijah sat down on the chair in front of her,"The night before we did our training thing, Spencer took us to this art exhibition."
"Cool." Fleur nodded.
"I was good, I didn't touch anything." Elijah assured her,"Everything was fine, but then this girl walked in."
"Oh... Keep going."
"And, it's not like I'm jealous or anything like that because that would be ridiculous but I think Reid like- Likes her." Elijah rambled.
"Reid likes a girl?- Sorry." Fleur cleared her throat,"Reid likes her?"
"Well, he was stuttering and smiling at her and he just had this look in his eye." Elijah shook his head.
"He looks at you like that, ya know." Fleur shrugged.
"No he doesn't." Elijah sighed.
"You're oblivious. Who is this girl anyway?"
"Some actress, I think her name was Lila." Elijah told her.
"Lila Archer?" Fleur raised a brow,"I'm sorry, I love Spence but... He couldn't get with her."
"It's not just him though, I think she likes him back." Elijah crossed her arms.
"She can dream on." Fleur scoffed.
"I've never felt like more of a third wheel." Elijah leaned back in his chair,"One of the girls was even flirting with Gideon."
"Was she old?" Fleur raised a brow.
"No, I would not say so."
"He's got himself a young girl."
"And I was just stood there not sure what to do with myself." Elijah shook his head.
"I'm sorry." Fleur sighed.
"It's fine, it's not like I'll need to see her again." Elijah shrugged.
"Thank god." She agreed,"Come on. We have to meet the others."
"Fine, I suppose." Elijah sighed as he stood up.
Fleur rubbed his arm as they walked into the office.
"This guy is an assassin?" The officer, Kim, asked.
"When you look at the victimology, there's no obvious links. All the kills are clean except in the instance of the last victim, Jeremy Collins." Morgan answered.
"There's absolutely no evidence left at the crime scene. There's no DNA, there's no manifestion of psychosexual release and there's no detectable signature of any kind." Elle shrugged.
"Remember, our profiles are formulated not just by what's present at the scene, but what's absent." Gideon nodded.
"From all the evidence that we gathered, we believe you're looking for a type four assassin." Fleur told him.
"Type four?" Kim raised a brow.
"Type ones are political assassins like John Wilkes Booth. Type twos are egocentrics looking for simple recognition." Reid began.
"Type threes are psychopaths who are cold blooded killers who leave far messier scenes and Type four, our Unsub, suffers from a major mental disorder and is frequently delusional." Fleur finished.
"The closer we get to figuring out that delusion, the closer we get to finding our Unsub." Elijah leaned against a desk.
"Well, what's he going to be doing until we do?" Kim asked.
"Finding other victims." Gideon told him.
"Excuse me? Hi. Is there a Detective Kim here?" A man knocked on the door, walking in.
"Right here." Kim nodded.
"You're heading the investigation into the Natalie Ryan murder?"
"Yes."
"Um... My- I have a client, she's... Is there any place we can be private?" He sighed.
"We're all working this murder." Kim told him.
"Well... She received a note. My client did, and she freaked out. I told her not to worry and-"
"Where's the note?" Morgan asked.
The man handed over the note.
"Where is your client?" Hotch turned.
"She's waiting in the other room." The man told them.
"I'll go get her." Morgan stood up, leaving the room.
*********************************
"How well did you know Natalie Ryan?" Hotch asked Lila, of course she was the client.
"We spoke when we saw each other in public, but we were never friends." Lila answered.
"What about Wally Melman?" Elijah raised a brow, trying not to look at her.
"What?" Lila turned her attention to Elijah.
"Wally Melman, he was a producer who was killed a few months ago." Elijah told her.
"The paper said that was a robbery." Lila shook her head.
"Well, the paper was wrong. Did you know him?" He crossed his arms.
"Well, we met a few times about a project, but I didn't get the part." She shrugged,"They went a different way."
"What way?" Elle asked.
"He cast another act... Oh my god.' Lila realised.
"What is it?" Fleur leaned forward.
"He cast Natalie Ryan." Michael sighed.
"You owe me." Morgan looked at the note.
"I guess that's one way to ice out the competition?" Fleur shrugged.
"Dont look at me, I brought her into the police station." Michael raised his hands.
"Have you ever had a sense that someone is watching you, following you?" Gideon spoke, not looking up from his file.
"From the moment I get to work, I have hair and makeup, wardrobe people, producers, writers, my agent, my manager, publicist. Not to mention the photographers.." Lila shook her head.
"It's part of her life." Michael nodded.
"Anything that seems odd, our of the ordinary? Happens on a regular basis or a semi-regular basis?" Gideon asked.
"What do you mean?" Lila turned her head to him.
"Repetitive phone calls with hang-ups, gifts sent anonymously?" Reid tilted his head.
"I receive flowers. On the seventh of each month they just appear in my trailer. Never a note, just a plain glass bowl. Red anemones, my favourite." She sighed.
"And you don't wanna know who they're from?" Elle asked.
"Celebrities get anonymous gifts all the time. She has fans, you know." Michael told them.
"Do you ever remember meeting someone of the seventh day of the month?" Elijah questioned,"Or in July, the seventh month fo the year?"
"No."
"Wally Melman was a producer who considered hiring you, but didn't and Natalie was a rival." Hotch crossed his arms.
"And Chloe Harris, she looks a lot like you. Don't you think?" Elle held up a photograph of Chloe.
"Who?" Lila looked at the photo.
"A potential rival, she was murdered too." Elijah pointed to it.
"So all these people are being killed because of me?"
"It's possible."
Lila covered her face,"I'm sorry- I can't. I need to go." She quickly rushed out with Larry.
*********************************
"I'm intrigued by this particular version of the verb 'to be'." Gideon nodded.
"Past participle." Reid crossed his arms.
"Steady state of being, preceeding adverb."
"Always." Reid nodded.
"In English?" Kim blinked.
"That is English, actually. We're discussing the verb tenses of-" Reid began.
"Reid, Reid." Morgan shook his head.
"Our stalker sounds like someone she knows." Elijah leaned against the counter.
"Based on the tense of the verb." Reid nodded.
"Maybe it's time to get her off the street." Morgan suggested.
"You know there's been no physical threat to her. She might be safe just staying put as opposed to anywhere else." Reid told them.
"I'm standing right here, guys." Lila turned to her.
"I was trying not to notice." Elijah muttered.
"If we did remove you, we'd have to take you to a non disclosed location. I'm sure your stalker knows where you live." Gideon sighed.
"I'm not having the whole show closed down. I only have one more scene to shoot." Lila shook her head,"Look, last night I decided I wasn't going to be scared of that lunatic. Am I safe here?"
"Well, the sets cleared of everyone except essential personel and we have increased security at the gate." Kim shrugged.
A woman then knocked on the trailer door, walking in,"Lila, they're ready for you."
"I'm staying at work, gentlemen." Lila took off her robe and walked out of the trailer.
"She's one tough girl." Kim nodded.
"Yeah... I didn't want to say anything in front of her, but his anger about her going to the police suggests he might alter his agenda." Gideon pushed his glasses up.
"That's typical for a stalker." Elijah agreed.
"You know, she didn't go alone to the police." Gideon turned to the boys.
"Her manager took her." Reid nodded.
"Dean and Reid stay here, keep an eye on her." Gideon got up,"Morgan, you're with me."
"I'll hang back too." Kim adjusted his jacket.
"Where are you going?" Elijah asked.
"To talk to her manager." Gideon nodded, leaving with Morgan.
"Let's go keep an eye on her." Elijah sighed as he walked out of the trailer.
The two then walked out to the set, Reid had grabbed a coke while he walked to Lila.
Elijah stayed a bit behind them as Reid cleared his throat,"Sorry if I was insensitive last night."
"You're just doing your job, right?" Lila shrugged.
"Yeah." Reid nodded.
"Then there's no need to apologise." Lila drank her coffee, scrunching her face up and taking Reid's coke, taking a sip,"You don't mind sharing with me, do you?"
Reid shook his head as a bell rang,"No."
Lila hummed and gave the coke back, taking her robe off once again as she walked off. Reid then put his coke in the trash, turning to Elijah.
"You don't mind sharing with me, fo you?" Elijah crossed his arms.
"Shut up." Reid sighed.
"I'm just saying." Elijah shrugged,"You met her not even two days ago."
"I know." Reid nodded, grabbing a napkin and wiping his hands.
"We can all see you how you two look at each other." Elijah put his hands in his pockets.
"What do I look at her like?'
"Like Morgan looks at Fleur."
"Morgan looks at Fleur like what?" Reid turned.
Elijah sighed,"You just look interested in her, attached."
"I just... I want her to be okay."
"She will be, if we do our job." Elijah shrugged.
"Good." Reid nodded.
*********************************
"My knees hurt." Elijah muttered, talking to Fleur over the phone.
"Why are you on your knees?" Fleur blinked, looking at her phone.
"I thought hiding in the bushes was a good idea."
"There's not another place for you to hide?" Fleur sighed.
"I panicked, they came outside." Elijah shook his head.
"So what are they doing now?"
"They're- She's in the pool." Elijah rolled his eyes.
"She shouldn't be outside." Fleur cursed.
"He's trying to convince her to get out, at least there's some sense left."
Lila then swam over, holding her hand out to Reid before pulling him into the pool.
"What was that splash?" Fleur asked.
"Now they're both in the pool, she dragged him in." Elijah sighed.
"Oh my god." Fleur held her head,"He's not going to be happy about his clothes being wet."
"No, I know how he gets and.." Elijah trailed off.
They were kissing, in the pool. Elijah looked down, he didn't want to watch anymore.
"What? What's wrong?- Elijah, I'm just arriving with Derek." Fleur nodded.
"They kissed Fleur, they fucking kissed." Elijah bit his lip.
"I'm sorry, Eli." Fleur sighed,"I'll be there in a second."
"Yeah, thanks." Elijah hung up, watching as Lila got out of the pool, looking unhappy.
That's when Elijah heard a gun click, Morgan had a gun at the cameraman's head, Fleur with him.
"Give me a reason." Morgan threatened.
"Thank god you're here." Elijah sighed as he got up.
Fleur sighed and patted Elijah's back,"Come on."
Elijah nodded as they walked up to Reid who was trying to dry himself off.
"We found him in the bushes." Elijah told him.
"I told her she could cut those." Reid sighed.
Fleur looked Reid up and down.
"I, uh, I fell in." Reid explained.
"I saw." Elijah looked off to the side.
"I'm sure there's plenty of photos of it." Fleur shrugged.
"Stop shoving me, man." The photographer complained as Morgan pushed him over to the other three.
"You're a suspect in the murder of Wally Melman, Natalie Ryan and Jeremy Collins." Morgon told him.
"Murder, what? Woah, woah woah-"
"Just shut up with the whoa! We know for a fact you have hundreds of photographs of Lila Archer and Natalie Ryan on the walls of your studio. You have Miss Archer's schedule on your desk. You've been stalking her." Morgan pointed.
"Look, guy, look, hold up. Every paparazzi's a celebrity stalker. If you don't stalk them, you don't get no shot. And if you don't get the shot, you don't sell no pictures." He shook his head.
"Well, this one's going to cost you." Fleur shrugged, pulling the camera tape.
"Well- No. That's just wrong."
"Tell that to your lawyer." Morgan grabbed the guy.
"I'm still being locked up?" The man questioned.
"That's right. At the very least you're trespassing, let's go." Morgan walked off with the man.
"You're welcome." Fleur handed the tape to Reid before she walked off, she destroyed it.
"I won't tell anyone else what I saw." Elijah told Reid, following Fleur and Morgan.
"Elijah-" Reid turned to him.
"No, Reid, it's fine." Elijah shook his head.
Reid bit his cheek and walked inside to change.
*********************************
Reid, Elijah, Morgan and Fleur were rearranging a picture, a collage that Lila had displayed in her home.
"Lila, someone has been stalking you for years." Morgan sighed.
"I mean, this tells your whole life story. Movie premieres, theater playbills." Elijah looked down at the collage.
"Everything since college." Reid nodded, moving the final piece.
"That's our country house, right here." She pointed.
"Who gave you this collage?" Fleur raised a brow.
"Him." Lila pointed to the face of a man in the corner of the collage.
"This guy? Who is he?" Morgan looked at Lila.
"That's the guy I went to high school with, Parker Dunley." Reid told him.
"Garcia. Parker Dunley. Email me a sheet on him, alright?" Morgan left a voicemail.
*********************************
Gideon walked into the gallery with Fleur and Morgan as a woman began taking down and boxing the artwork.
"Oh, look who's here." Becka chuckled.
"Where's Parker?" Gideon asked.
"I don't even get a hello?" She put her hands on her hips.
"Where is he?" Gideon repeated.
"I guess it follows since I never got a goodbye. Parker!" Becka called for him as she walked off.
"Friend of yours?" Fleur leaned towards Gideon.
"No."
"How can I help- Hey... I remember your face." Parker pointed at Gideon,"You're Spencer's friend, which means the rest of you are too?"
"Yes. Uh, did you give Lila Archer a collage?" Gideon asked him.
"What?"
"There's a photographic collage above Lila Archer's sofa. She says you gave it to her." Morgan pointed.
"So?" Parker crossed his arms.
"So it has your face hidden all over it." Morgan told him.
"I didn't make the damned thing." Parker scoffed.
"So you just happened to give her a piece of artwork that contains most of her life in it?" Gideon raised a brow.
"I... No, no."
"If there's something you aren't saying, now would be a real good time to say it." Fleur shrugged.
"Alright. Alright, I lied." Parker admitted.
"What about?" Fleur hummed.
"I just wanted her to like me. I met her here, she's a fan of art. I figured if there were young, hip stars coming into the gallery it would help business." Parker told them.
"What was the lie?" Morgan tilted his head.
"Someone gave me the piece to give to Lila but I said it was from me. I said I found it and thought she'd love it." Parker explained.
"And who gave it to you?"
"A girl named Maggie Lowe, she works on Lila's show. She said she went to college with Lila, that she was a PA or AD or some acronym." Parker told them,"She said she wanted to make sure Lila got the collage but didn't want her to know who gave it to her, wanted me to say it was from a secret admirer... But I told her it was from me."
Fleur and Morgan turned around, walking out while Gideon called Elijah.
"We have a name, Maggie Lowe. She's the Unsub, she's works on Lila's show."
Then, Elijah heard a phone ringing as he hung up with Gideon.
"Lila, do you know someone named Maggie Lowe?" Elijah asked her.
"Mags? I've known her for years." Lila shook her head,"She's calling me right now."
"Is she calling from a cellphone?"
"Yeah." She nodded.
"Lila, we think Maggie is the Unsub." Elijah put his phone in his pocket.
"The what?"
"She's the stalker, now answer the phone." Elijah pointed, taking off his pink blazer.
"That's crazy." Lila scoffed.
"Answer the phone, act completely natural. The longer you keep her on the line, the more likely we'll be able to trace the call... Trust me." Reid nodded.
Lila looked up at Reid before answering the phone, Reid taking out his own phone and calling Garcia.
"Listen in." Reid told Elijah as he called.
Elijah nodded as Garcia spoke,"Oracle of Quantico. Speak if you deign to hear truth."
"Garcia, I need an emergency trace on a cell phone call to Lila Archer's cell phone." Reid whispered.
"Sure, go ahead." Garcia nodded.
"323-555-0129." Reid read out.
"Okay, keep her talking, keep her talking." Garcia began typing.
"Elijah, we need to keep her talking." Reid turned to him
Elijah turned to Lila, keeping his voice quiet,"Come on, say something. We need her talking."
Lila nodded,"Maggie?"
"Maggie's calling from inside the house." Reid looked at Elijah.
"Lila, how did she get into the house?" Elijah hissed.
"She... Has keys." Lila shrugged.
"Of course she does." Elijah sighed as he took out his gun.
"I'll go first." Reid walked forward, his gun out as he walked to where they heard a bang.
Elijah nodded as he and Lila followed Reid down the hall and into another room. The two secured the room until they heard Maggie from behind them.
"Why did you have to bring these people here? Put down your guns." She held a gun to Lila's head.
"Maggie." Elijah slowly lowered his gun, as did Reid.
"Don't call me Maggie, you don't know me. Come on, Lila. Let's go. We gotta go baby, come on." Maggie nodded.
"Maggie, don't hurt her." Reid shook his head,"You don't need to hurt her."
"You don't know anything. I would never do anything to hurt you. No... I created you." Maggie hummed.
"No, you didn't." Lila shook her head.
"Yes, I did. I know I did! God. You stupid, ungrateful- God, I can't believe I loved you." Maggie pointed the gun at Lila.
"Maggie, she loves me now." Reid told her.
"What?" Maggie turned the gun to Reid.
"We were in the pool, she kissed me. She loves me now, okay?" Reid explained.
Elijah clenched his fists at the mention of the kiss. He hated this stupid feeling.
"No." She turned the gun back to Lila.
"Tell her we kissed in the pool." Reid looked to Lila.
"No!" Maggie shook her head.
"Yes, we kissed." Lila nodded.
"No!" Maggie screamed, pushing Lila out of the way as she ran at Reid.
Although Elijah grabbed Maggie and took her gun, aiming it at her head as she fell to the ground.
"Please! Please just kill me!" Magggie pleaded,"Just shoot me! I'd be so much happier! Come on."
"I don't kill people, Maggie." Elijah shook his head, still with the gun aimed at her head,"It's over.. We're going to get you help."
Maggie sobbed and leaned back, rocking back and forth.
"It's okay." Elijah patted her back.
*********************************
"I'm glad that's over." Fleur sat down on her chair.
"Same here." Morgan nodded with a smile,"But you'll never guess what I managed to pick up."
"What?" Fleur looked over his shoulder.
Morgan showed her a magazine, a photo of Lila and Reid together from earlier in the day on the front page
"Oh god, that's a terrible angle."
"At least he doesn't look like a wet rat, like when he was at the side of the pool." Morgan chuckled.
"They got your worst angle too. Fleur pointed to Morgan in the background.
"Hey." Morgan sat the magazine down,"I looked great."
"The lights not hitting you right, you need to show off the baldness." Fleur chuckled.
"It was hot, I needed to stand in the shade."
Fleur shook her head and took his sunglasses,"You have to pose like this."
"Is that how it's done, hm?" Morgan smiled.
"That is exactly how it's done, and I don't see how you can't do it. Even Elijah could." Fleur pointed.
"You chose to compare me to the most photogenic guy on the team." Morgan pointed back,"That kid is always ready for the camera."
"Totally." Fleur nodded,"I might just keep these."
"Take 'em, they look good on you." Morgan shrugged.
"You think?" Fleur hummed.
"I do."
Fleur nodded and crossed her arms, leaning back.
