Chapter 78 - Heathridge Manor

"Happy belated birthday Addy." Fleur hummed, giving Adelaide a slice of cake.

"Thanks, mama." Adelaide smiled.

"How do you feel?"

"Nervous." She chuckled.

"Eighteen is a big age." Fleur nodded.

"I know."

"Still can't drink though." Morgan pointed.

"I still think that law's stupid." Fleur shrugged,"In France, you can drink at eighteen."

"Same in England." Elijah added as he walked in.

"Uncle Jah." Adelaide smiled, running up to him.

"You're all grown-up, Junebug." Elijah hugged her.

"If I'm getting old that means you are too." Adelaide shrugged.

"Your dad's older than I am." Elijah pointed.

"Yeah, but he'll take away my present if I'm mean to him." Addy laughed.

"We can be mean to him for you?" Reid suggested.

"You? Mean to me?" Morgan chuckled.

"Remember the prank war?"

"Oh god." Fleur shook her head

"We can have another round of that." Elijah nodded,"But worse."

"Oh yeah, mama told me about that." Adelaide chuckled.

"I think it would be a great idea to do it again."

"No, no." Morgan pointed.

"Aw, come on. You had so much fun." Elijah hummed.

"I did not. You guys are horrible." Morgan pointed.

"Okay- It's about me today, no arguments." Addy hummed.

"Addy's right." Elijah nodded,"And we brought you your present."

"You got me a present?" Addy turned.

"You're my niece, of course i did."

"What did you get me?" She smiled.

"It's in here." Elijah handed a bag to her.

Adelaide hummed, opening the bag,"You got me tickets to the new Wicked musical?"

"Do you like them?" He asked.

"Of course I like them." Addy smiled.

"I'm glad."

"Wait- Who's coming with me?"

"That would be your choice." Fleur hummed.

"You could take your mother, a school friend." Morgan hummed,"Anyone you like."

"I'll have to think about it." Addy nodded.

"You've got ages to think about it." Elijah assured her.

"I'll let you guys know my choice eventually."

"Alright, honey." Morgan patted her shoulder.

"Thank you, all of you..I love everything." Addy smiled.

"I'm just happy that you're happy." Elijah told her.

"I'm always happy." Addy shrugged.

"Well, let's hope it stays that way." He smiled.

"Oh my gosh, I am so sorry for the delay. The system was down. We overwork her. And I had to go into the belly of the beast who I've affectionately nicknamed Persephone, and do some machine whispering. Thank you, which is good, because this one is a doozy." Garcia began.

"That's always a good start." Elijah shook his head, looking down at the file.

"Emma Baker." Garcia showed a picture of her on the screen,"Thirty-eight, math teacher from Medford, Oregon. She went missing seventeen days ago, and her body was found yesterday afternoon at St Baldwins. St Baldwins is a now defunct psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. Now, that is in Salem, Oregon, which is 230 miles away from Medford, and we've been called in for the bizarre nature of the case. Observe the photos."

"Wow, look at that dress." JJ looked at the photo.

"Was she going to the Renaissance fair?" Emily asked.

"Not with her feet bound. And missing persons report says that she was in jeans and a t-shirt." Garcia shook her head.

"Look at how she's laid out. It's almost as like it's a ceremony and she's the sacrifice." Fleur tilted her head.

"There's obvious staging going on." Rossi agreed.

"Do we think it's a ritualistic killing?" JJ suggested.

"And cause of death is still unclear. The M.E report shows no sign of sexual assault or mutilation except mangled and missing fingernails." Hotch added.

"You know there were rumors of Satanic rites being performed at Byberry hospital in Pennsylvania, which is also an abandoned asylum." Reid hummed.

"Well, judging by all the graffiti, this place isn't exactly locked down." Elijah pointed.

"Yeah. The local P.D said that vandals and vagrants have been breaking in." Garcia sighed.

"Which means she could've been killed elsewhere and placed here." Rossi nodded.

"She had limestone under her fingernails, but limestone wouldn't have been used when this asylum was built, so she was obviously held somewhere else." Reid agreed.

"Well, the bottom line is, the Unsub transported her hundreds of miles from her hometown for a reason." Emily crossed her arms.

"We just need to find out what that reason is. Wheels up in 30." Hotch nodded.

*********************************

"Emma Baker was a divorced math teacher. No children." Rossi began.

"She has a boyfriend, though, who's a drummer in a goth band." Garcia hummed,"Her Facebook has pictures of them at the Bram Stoker Vampire Festival and Slayerama, which is a celebration of all things gothic."

"Teacher by day, Elvira by night." JJ nodded.

"Clearly this is a woman with two different sides to her personality." Morgan read over the file.

"Yeah, the boyfriend's band pours fake blood all over themselves on stage." Elijah agreed.

"Okay, so if these two were Satanists, it wouldn't be a stretch." Fleur looked up.

"Garcia, has the boyfriend been questioned by local P.D?" Hotch asked her.

"He has by phone. He's got an airtight alibi. Him and his band have been on tour to Asia for the last month."

"Well, if it's not the boyfriend, it could be someone within their circle." Morgan nodded.

"Emily, you asked earlier if she was going to a Renaissance fair. There's something to that." Rossi pointed.

"Based on the dress, there could be more of a connection to history than the occult." She told him.

"Renaissance fairs typically replicate 16th century England. They've surged in popularity since they began in the 1960s." Reid explained.

"And it's not just a bunch of needs in costumes eating turkey legs, you guys." Garcia added.

"A different time is somehow very important to this UnSub." Hotch sighed.

*********************************

"Fount of wisdom." Garcia hummed as Rossi called her from the police station.

"Penelope, how many patients were in the female ward of the asylum?" Rossi asked.

"Thirty-two. Six died in the fire that broke out in the kitchen next to the ward. The rest were transferred to different facilities after the hospital shut down." She answered.

"Anyone recently released?"

"The last female patient that got released was five years ago when she was eighty." Garcia told him,"It was a compassionate release."

"Thanks Garcia." Rossi sighed.

"Hey, guys. What do you think about this?" Emily beckoned them over to a picture of the graffiti.

"Batty. That's kind of on the nose." Rossi shrugged.

"No, not that. Rick, can you zoom in right there." Emily pointed at the screen, showing three names on the wall,"Emma's the name of our victim."

"It could also be completely unrelated to the case." The detecive, Gassner, shrugged.

"What do the numbers mean?" Elijah tilted his head.

"My guess, patient IDs." He nodded.

"Has the paint analysis come back yet?" Emily asked him.

"This particular sample was written no more than a week ago." Gassner looked up from the file.

"I'll check these names against missing women in Oregon." Hotch nodded.

"Well, if this is a list of victims, it means there are more he hasn't chosen yet." Emily pointed.

*********************************

"Alice's sorority sisters say she wanted to be a nurse and she was active in a Christian youth group." Morgan told Reid as he, Fleur and JJ walked in.

"If she was into anything dark, her best friends sure didn't know about it." Fleur sighed.

"She was in Portland collecting donations for an orphanage when she disappeared. The Unsub could've approached her on the street." Morgan nodded before his phone rang,"Hey babygirl, you're on speaker. Give me the lowdown."

"Chocolate thunder, you can have the whole kit and caboodle. Just say the word. And I cross referenced the names you found on the wall with missing women in Oregon and I came up with some matches. Christine Torres. She is a forty year old homemaker from Eugene, Oregon. She went missing over a month ago after she dropped her kids off at school."

"Any other women named Emma missing?" JJ asked.

"Uh-Uh. Just the one whose body we found. Same thing with Alice." Garcia typed.

"Garcia, what was the exact date Christine was reported missing?" Reid questioned.

"February 28th. Emma went missing on March 19th, Alice on the 22nd." Garcia nodded.

Reid walked behind the board and looked at the numbers,"Guys, I think these numbers are dates. If you reverse them and chop the eleven off the beginning and end.."

"That's two days after each woman went missing." Hotch shook his head.

"It's more than that, though. Look. March 1st is St Eichatadt day. March 21st is the Spring Equinox and the 24th is the Feast of the Beast. All important holidays in the Satanic calendar for sacrifices." Reid told them.

"What about the 11 on the end?" Morgan asked.

"To many occultists, 11 is symbolic of Lucifer." He nodded.

"Okay- I thought we were moving away from Satanic killings." JJ blinked

"Apparently we need to reconsider." Hotch shrugged.

"There's gotta be some sort of connection to the Devil here." Fleur sighed.

"Reid, what other upcoming dates are significant to Satanists?" Hotch turned to him.

"Good Friday, then Easter Eve. Then preparations begin in mid-April for the most important holiday of all, Walpurgis night on April 30th."

"Good Friday's in two days. That means he's hunting for his next victim today." Morgan pointed.

"We need to give the profile soon." Hotch sighed.

*********************************

"Based on the dresses and makeup the victims were found in, we're looking for an Unsub who is living in an elaborate fantasy world." Emily began the profile,"He believes he is special, perhaps acting on behalf of the Devil."

"This UnSub tortured his victims by submerging them in water for days before killing them. Which means he's deliberate and patient." Fleur added.

"This guy has a vivid imagination. The costumes and makeup suggests he's a history buff or he may be a fan of Shakespeare." Morgan told them.

"Using nicotine as a poison is highly unusual, so he's either very well-read or under the guidance of another." Reid shrugged.

"His interests and delusions have caused him to become isolated socially." Emily continued.

"He can appear normal to his potential targets, and his crimes are not driven by sex or greed, but instead by his delusional belief system." Rossi nodded.

"Although the bodies of only two victims have been recovered, there's likely a third, specifically Christine Torres who disappeared in February." Elijah crossed his arms.

"This Unsub's exact age is difficult to determine, but he's probably in his 20s or 30s." Morgan shrugged.

"The fact that he travels so far to abduct his victims indicates that he has a very specific selection criteria." Emily stated.

"This UnSub has a female or underage accomplice to sew the dresses the victims were found in, but she may not be a partner in the traditional sense. It's quite possible she was coerced into helping and may actually be a victim herself." Reid sighed.

"Most importantly, this Unsub is working according to a specific timetable that corresponds with the Satanic calendar, and he has plans to kidnap a woman before the end of the day. Thank you." Hotch finished.

*********************************

"Okay, thanks. So, Garcia checked out everyone associated with that theater production of The Merry Wives of Windsor." Rossi walked over after hanging up the phone,"They're all in the clear."

"Well, the gowns have to be connected to the theater somehow. It can't just be a coincidence." JJ looked up at him.

"There's something else that's been bothering me. Why is he putting white face makeup on his victims after they're dead?" Reid wondered.

"Isn't that what they wore in the Elizabethan era?" Rossi asked.

"Yes, but only upper class women wore white face makeup. It was a symbol of virginity and purity. But he's dressing them like characters out of the Merry Wives of Windsor, which is one of Shakespears rare plays about the middle class." Reid explained.

"So it's inconsistent." JJ nodded.

"The makeup could mean that he believes death is purifying them." Hotch sighed.

"What if this is like the Salem witch trials, where they test the girls by trying to drown them?" Elijah suggested,"If they died, it meant they were obviously innocent. If they somehow survived, they were considered witches and therefore hanged."

"Wonderful. A lose-lose situation." Rossi sat down.

"The Unsub didn't submerge his victims in water to torture them. It was some sort of test?" JJ tilted her head.

"With death being the only possible outcome." Reid nodded.

"If he believes he's killing witches, he probably thinks he's a vigilante or a protector against evil of some sort." Hotch sighed.

"Laying the victims out the way he did could be a message to the Devil." Fleur looked up.

"A symbol of victory and a warning, like putting a head on a spike." Elijah shook his head.

"He's not worshipping the Devil. He's trying to fight him." Reid realised.

*********************************

"If someone's carrying on in Catherine's mission, then it's quite possible they both suffered from folie à deux, a shared psychotic disorder between two people who are extremely close, and that would mean it's most likely a family member." Reid explained to them.

"Maybe one or both of her kids." Rossi shrugged.

"Garcia, I need you to find everything you can on the Heathridge family, specifically Catherine's son and daughter." Hotch told her.

"Okay, finding it as we speak.." Garcia typed,"Bingo. Catherine, a wealthy textile heiress, had a son James, now twenty-six and a daughter Lara, now sixteen. Father died in a speedboat accident right before Lara was born. They were raised by their grandfather in a mansion outside Portland after mom was committed."

"Is the grandfather still alive?" He asked.

"No. He died last year." She sighed.

"That could be the stressor." Elijah nodded,"Garcia, where are the kids living now?"

"James was kicked out of a seminary in Colarado three years ago, but that's still listed as his address. Lara dropped out of school six weeks ago, coincidentally on her birthday. And the family home is her listed address, and I'm sending you pictures right now."

Rossi picked up the tablet,"That could be him. The man at the night club who left with Sarah Gammon."

"Contact the seminary. Garcia, I'm gonna need an address." Hotch walked off.

*********************************

The team slowly pulled up in the SUV outside of Heathridge Manor, looking up at the house as they got out.

"Morgan, you and JJ take the back. We'll take the front." Hotch nodded, JJ and Morgan soon heading around the back of the house.

"Did you see that? There's a girl up in that window." Emily looked up.

"You two check it out. I'll look for James." Hotch walked ahead.

Emily nodded as she and Fleur entered the house, guns and flashlights raised. When the girls reached the upstairs, Lara was in a dress like the victims, coughing as she was tied to a radiator.

"Okay, we're going to take this off you, okay?" Emily assured her.

"Hold on." Fleur quickly put her gloves on as they began ripping the dress at the stitches.

"Okay, okay.. Where is James?" Emily asked Lara once she was free.

"He's- He's in the basement." Lara sighed.

"Right, we're going to get you out of here."

*********************************

"That was amazing, Uncle Jah." Addy smiled as they walked down the street.

"I'm glad you liked it, Junebug." He hummed.

"Thank you for getting them."

"It's no problem."

"And I'm glad I spent it with you, really."

"You could've chosen anyone and you chose me?" Elijah tilted his head.

"Of course. You're my uncle."

"I know, but wouldn't you have rather brought a friend? Boyfriend?"

"No, no.. Not boyfriend." She shook her head.

"Not got one of those?" Elijah chuckled.

"No, we didn't end up working out." Addy sighed.

"You'll find someone eventually, sweetheart." Elijah rubbed her arm.

"When I'm forty."

"Don't sell yourself short. There's a lot to love about you."

"Yeah?" Addy looked at him.

"Of course."

"Like?"

"You're so caring and loyal, you believe in what's right." Elijah hummed,"Plus, you got your mother's good looks."

"Hell yeah. I'm even mastering her stare."

"Trust me, sweetheart. Anybody would be lucky to have you."

Addy smiled softly,"Thanks, Uncle Jah."

"No problem, Junebug." Elijah kissed her head.
