Chapter 73 - Hope

"Hey, Rossi?" Elijah knocked on the door to his office.

He wanted to go home but he'd noticed Rossi staying at the office late.. Again.

"Yeah?" Rossi looked up.

"It's getting kind of late." Elijah leaned against the door.

"Yeah, don't worry about me kiddo."

"..Are you thinking about her?" Elijah asked slowly.

Rossi sighed, looking over at him.

"You can talk to me." Elijah closed the door behind him,"You know that, right?"

"Of course."

Elijah pulled up a seat in front of Rossi's desk,"So let's talk."

"Kiddo-" Rossi began.

"You can't just bottle it all up. It's not healthy." Elijah pointed.

"I know." Rossi sighed.

"So talk to me." He leaned forward.

"I just..I feel horrible."

"It wasn't your fault."

Rossi sighed and held his head.

"How about.. You tell me about her?"

"Carolyn..She was great. She was very loving." Rossi nodded.

Elijah took Rossi's hand,"What were some of her favorite things."

"She loved cooking. And reading."

"She sounds.. Wonderful." Elijah smiled softly.

"She was. And I'm..I'm glad I spent some of life with her."

"I wish I could've met her."

"She wanted to meet you." He chuckled.

"She did?" Elijah blinked.

"She said you sounded great."

"Well- Obviously. I am great."

"You should go, get some sleep." He patted his back.

"Only if you go." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Tell you what, I'll drive you home."

"You really want to put up with me for even longer?" Elijah hummed as he stood up.

"You're my son, I have to." He smiled.

Elijah walked over to Rossi and hugged him,"Yeah.. That's right."

"I love you, Figlio."

"I love you too, Papà."

Everyone walked into the Conference Room, Garcia was already sitting down and Hotch was stood by the screen.

"Seven years ago today in Manassas, Virginia, eight year old Hope Kingston was abducted from her front yard while playing with her friend." Hotch explained to them,"She's been presumed dead."

"A few hours ago, her mother, Monica, disappeared from a parking lot after attending Garcia's victim support group." Morgan sighed.

"It's not uncommon for Unsubs to reach out and contact relatives of their victims." Reid told them,"Joran Van Der Sloot extorted $25,000 from Natalee Holloway's mother in exchange for information."

"Do we think both abductions are related?' Rossi asked.

"I found a letter signed by Hope inside Monica's car." Morgan nodded.

"The anniversary could have been the trigger." Reid grabbed the letter.

"We can't rule out the possibility that Monica committed suicide.' Elijah added.

"No, no. Monica would never hurt herself. She still thought Hope was alive." Garcia shook her head.

"Is the father in the picture?" JJ asked her.

"No, he died in a car accident right before Hope was born." Garcia told them.

"There's no postmark, which means this letter was obviously hand-delivered." Reid scanned the letter.

"Reid, do a full linguistic analysis. We need to determine authenticity." Hotch sighed.

"There's a butterfly drawn next to Hope's name. That has to mean sonetjing." He added.

"There was no sign of struggle at the scene." Fleur pointed.

"What if she went willingly?" Emily suggested,"He could have approached her and had Hope with him."

"That would certainly get her attention." Rossi sighed.

"Still, it's pretty high-risk to abduct in such a high-traffic area. The parking lot was right next to a strip mall." Reid pointed.

"Any witnesses?" Fleur asked.

"I was the last person that saw her." Garcia told her.

"Unless we have reason to believe otherwise, we should assume that the same UnSub is responsible for both abductions. Let's get started." Hottch nodded.

*********************************

"So this letter Monica received from her daughter contains no indication of female authorship." Reid pointed to the letter,"It lacks expression of emotional attachment."

"The UnSub wrote it?" Hotch asked.

"I believe so. The language is inconsistent with that of a fifteen year old held in captivity with seven years." He nodded.

"I just got a hit on someone who matches Monica's description at a gas station seventeen miles outside of Manassas." Garcia looked up.

They walked over to Garcia, looking at the footage.

"Hope isn't with them." Elijah shook his head.

"Looks like they're having a conversation." Reid tilted his head.

"She's cooperating. Garcia, can you get any closer?" Hotch asked her.

"No, no. I can't get a good look at him." Garcia typed.

"Look at his body language. He's shielding himself from the cameras." Elijah crossed his arms.

"He knows where they are. He's protecting his identity." Fleur sighed.

"Why isn't Monica asking for help?" Garcia shook her head.

"She doesn't want to draw attention to herself." Hotch told her.

"She leaves, but the Unsub stays?" Reid raised a brow.

"I don't understand." Garcia looked up.

"He has complete control. He's not worried about her contacting the authorities." Hotch sighed,"Garcia, run the pump receipts against the timeline. Maybe he used a credit card."

"Pumps one through nine... Nothing. Who goes to a gas station and doesn't buy anything?" Garcia groaned.

"There are plenty of service stations between the community centre and here but he drove her clear across town." Reid looked at the map,"This place must mean something to the both of them."

"This could be where it all started." Hotch realised.

*********************************

"So, what's the word, genius?" Morgan asked as he walked over, coffee in hand.

"I may have been able to narrow down the Unsub's comfort zone. The gas station was the third point I needed to complete the geographical profile. Factoring in Monica's abduction site and her apartment, I would assume the UnSub lives somewhere within this area." Reid pointed.

"That would make it easier for him to learn her routines. That zone can't be more than twenty miles." Morgan nodded.

"Alright, so all the local employees that were on duty last night checked out. Nobody saw a thing." JJ sighed.

"You know, it looks like there are five different reported incidents that we might be able to attribute to this Unsub." Rossi looked at a file he had.

"When was the first case reported?" Fleur asked.

"Six months before Hope's abduction." Garcia answered,"A twelve year old girl in the area reported a man taking pictures of her on her way home from school, and then three weeks after that, she thought he was peeking through her window. And then her house was burglarized, and the only thing that was missing were her clothes."

"Well, if that's him, then there was a clear escalation in his MO." JJ sighed.

"He was building his confidence to abduct Hope and then seven years later, Monica." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Hey, these were found on Heather Wilson's bike two weeks after Hope disappeared." Emily walked in, handing over a bagged necklace and a note.

"That's the girl that Hope was playing with when she was abducted." Garcia hurried over.

"Yeah." Emily nodded.

"The butterfly again." Rossi looked at the necklace.

"Without you, she wouldn't have been set free. This is my token of appreciation." JJ read out.

"He sent a 'thank you' card to the girl he didn't abduct?" Garcia blinked.

*********************************

The team sat in front of other Agents as they began to give the profile.

"Seven years ago, we believed our UnSub to be a preferential child molester." Morgan began.

"And now we think that his preference evolved into an erotomanic obsession with Hope Kingston." Hotch continued.

"So much so, that in her absence, his attention are now focused on her mother." Fleur sighed.

"At the time Hope went missing, there was another potential victim, who was the same age and had the same physical characteristics as Hope, and she was even more accessible." Emily told them.

"Which tells us that Hope became his idealised target." Hotch nodded.

"Despite the high risk, he abducted Monica in public, which shows she's pivotal to his fantasy." Elijah crossed his arms.

"We believe this UnSub has Monica captive within a twenty mile radius of this abduction site." Reid pointed.

"There is a strong possibility that until recently the Unsub kept Hope alive. This explains why he didn't hunt again for all these years." JJ explained.

"And that it was Hope's death that triggered the chance in his MO." Hotch crossed his arms.

"If the same guy has her, how long is she really gonna last?" Anderson asked them.

After a moment of silence, Garcia stood up,"I know her. I know Monica, Monica is my friend and she is a fighter and she is not gonna give up, so neither should we."

*********************************

"So William Rogers joined the support group two months ago. Garcia's still looking for an adress." JJ informed them as she walked in.

"Any priors?" Rossi asked.

"Yeah, an attempted kidnapping of a fourteen year old girl." She nodded,"He lured her to his studio with promises of becoming a model. When she got there, he made sexual advances. She got away."

"You know, rethinking the type of offender he was seven years ago, it's possible the UnSub didn't sexually assault Hope initally but waited until she was older." Reid mentioned.

"That would explain why he held on to her all this time. In his fantasy, he might envision Hope at a more desirable age." Emily agreed.

"What story did he use to get into the support group?" Rossi walked over.

"Well, he told them his pregnant wife committed suicide. Apparently they were trying to conceive for over a year." JJ explained.

"Hope couldn't bear the thought of bringing his child into this world, so she took what little control she did have and ended her life." Rossi sighed.

"And that was never part of his plan. It turned his whole world upside down." Elijah pointed.

"He's not ready to let go of the bond he had with Hope." Fleur shook her head.

"And now he's trying to get back what was taken from him." Reid nodded.

"Wouldn't it just be easier for him to start over again?" Emily asked.

"Unless Monica could give him what he lost.. Another Hope." Rossi suggested before realization hit him,"He didn't take Monica to remind him of Hope, he took her to recreate her."

*********************************

"Address..Address..Address.." Garcia typed, rambling as she did so,"This guy like- redefined home invasion. By going to those group meetings, it was like he read Monica's diary. Like she only talked about her most personal feelings in this group- The group is definitely going to have to disband."

"Focus on finding this address." Morgan nodded.

"I am, I'm focusing and freaking out at the exact same time."

"There." Fleur pointed at the screen.

"Got it! He has two adresses. The first one is on Main. It's listed as a previous, but it's not been updated in the system. And the second one is on Brooks, and I have just sent them to your PDAs." Garcia sent the addresses and turned around.

"Where do you think you're going?" Fleur turned to Garcia who was getting up.

"I'm coming with you." She answered.

"No, that can't happen. Elijah, tell her." Morgan pointed.

"Yeah- Uhm.. It could be dangerous. You should stay here. Elijah nodded.

"Either you all let me come or you're going to have to forcibly remove me from the SUV. Your choice." Garcia ran out the room.

"..I'm not arguing with her." Elijah shook his head.

"She's your side chick, go get her." Fleur patted Morgan's back.

Morgan sighed, nodding as he walked out of the room.

*********************************

"I feel so bad for Monica." Fleur sighed as she packed her bag in the office.

"She just wanted to see her daughter again." Morgan shook his head.

"I don't care what anyone says..A mother's bond with their daughter is unbreakable."

"Damn right it is."

"I..I understand what Hope did. With her child. I thought about it when I was pregnant with Addy." Fleur sighed.

"Come here." Morgan nodded to her, holding his arms open.

Fleur looked at him and hugged him, kissing his shoulder.

Morgan kissed her forehead,"I could never begin to imagine what those people put you through."

"It's in the past." Fleur assured him.

"I know." He sighed, rubbing her back,"And you're safe now."

"Besides, you'd beat up people for me." Fleur shrugged.

"As many as I'd need to, babygirl." Morgan hummed.

"Is Garcia okay?"

Morgan stayed quiet,"I hope so."

"Y'know, if she wants to spend the night, she can." Fleur told him.

"I'm sure she'd love that." Morgan smiled.

"You call her, kay?"

"I will."

Fleur kissed his cheek and grabbed her bag.

*********************************

Elijah sighed as he drove, tapping the wheel as Reid sat beside him.

"You alright?" Reid asked, looking over at him.

"Just thinking." He nodded.

"About?"

"A lot."

"Do share." Reid hummed.

Elijah sighed,"Rossi."

"Is he.. How is he?"

"I've been trying to get him to open up to me, he's been trying to act like he's fine." Elijah shook his head.

"He's an old man, they usually don't open up easily."

"You're telling me." Elijah chuckled softly.

"I'm sorry he had to go through that."

"Me too.." Elijah leaned back in his chair,"But.. He told me Carolyn wanted to meet me."

"She did?" Reid smiled softly.

"And I know that's nice and all- But she's gone and I never got the chance." Elijah put his head in his hands.

"Park up." He sighed.

Elijah pulled over, stopping the car.

"Don't worry about Carolyn." Reid assured him, taking his hand.

"I just.. I just wanted a mum, y'know?" Elijah looked over at him.

"I know..And I'm sorry you couldn't have that."

"I just- No. I'm sorry." Elijah stopped himself.

"It's okay. You can talk about it." Reid nodded.

"..I didn't even know her, why do I feel like this?"

"You've not felt the love of a mother. I mean- You've got my mom..Fleur's moms.. But you've never had that love from your own mother and it's something crave." Reid rambled.

Elijah broke down after hearing that. He knew Reid was right, and he almost knew himself already, but hearing it.. It made it real.

"I'm sorry- I should've been quiet." He sighed.

"No- You're right. Don't apologize." Elijah spoke through his tears.

"Come here." Reid hugged him.

Elijah leaned into Reid's arms, rubbing his eyes.

"It's okay." He kissed his head.

"I love you, okay?" Elijah looked up at him,"Don't forget it, alright?"

"Of course I could never forget it. I never forget anything." He chuckled.

"I know." Elijah closed his eyes, holding onto Reid tightly.

"Dry those eyes. I'll drive Dolly and grab us something to eat, okay?" Reid played with his curls.

"Okay." Elijah nodded, smiling softly.

"Out, let's switch." He clapped.

"Right." Elijah sat up, letting go of Reid.

"What are you hungry for?"

"Anything."

"Italian?" Reid suggested.

"Yeah.. Yeah, I'd like that." Elijah told him.

"Then Italian it is." Reid kissed his cheek.

"Thank you." Elijah sighed.
