Chapter 63 - Coda

"Flo." Elijah sighed as he walked over to her,"Can we talk?"

"Hm?" Fleur looked at him as she placed down files

"It's about Emily."

"Is she okay?"

"Well, that's the thing. I don't know." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Explain."

"I just feel like she's been, I don't know.. Distant?" Elijah shook his head,"She's not really been herself lately."

"Oh thank god it's not just me that noticed it." Fleur sighed.

"You noticed too?"

"Of course I noticed." She nodded.

"I don't like it." Elijah sighed,"I know something's wrong but I know she wouldn't just tell us."

"She'd hiding something." Fleur crossed her arms.

"I just want to help her."

"You and me both." Fleur sat on her desk,"She's late as well."

"It's not like her." Elijah bit his cheek.

"I'll try speak to her later, once she's in. Has Reid mentioned anything?"

"No." He sighed.

"I'll see if I can call her." Fleur got her phone out.

"Please." Elijah nodded.

Fleur attempted to call Emily, sighing once it went to voicemail.

"Nothing?" Elijah tilted his head.

"Nothing. Went straight to voicemail so she's either on call or it's off."

Elijah sighed, shaking his head,"Flo, I really don't like this."

"She's..She's probably just busy."

"Yeah..Busy."

"Come on, I think Garcia wants us."

Elijah nodded slowly, putting his hands in his pockets as he walked to the Conference Room with Fleur. Once they were all sat down, Emily rushed into the room.

"Traffic, I'm sorry."

"Let's get started." Hotch nodded.

"Okay. Ten year old Sammy Sparks of Lafayette Parish, Louisiana showed up at his elementary school this morning covered in blood. When police got to his house, they found his parents, Charlie and Alison Sparks, were missing." Garcia began.

"Forensics indicate that at least one of them was injured. And by the looks of it, it was pretty severely." Morgan pointed.

"Has there been a ransom demand?" Emily asked.

"There's been no communication whatsoever." Garcia shook her head.

"Then why call in the BAU?" Rossi raised a brow.

"New Orleans is hoping we can interview Sammy." Hotch told him.

"No one's talked to the witness yet?" Reid blinked.

"I don't understand. If Sammy was covered with blood, there's a good chance he could identify the Unsub." Seaver pointed out.

"Oh, she's still here." Fleur muttered to Elijah.

"Sammy's Autistic." Hotch sighed,"Getting him to tell us what happened isn't gonna be easy."

*********************************

"Is that the one where they fly around in the phone booth?" Seaver asked Reid.

"First of all, it's a police box, not a phone booth. Second of all, Doctor Who started a quarter of a century before Bill and Ted even went on their bodacious adventure, so really they should've just called it Bill and Ted's Excellent Rip Off. I mean, at least then-" Reid rambled.

"I'm really sorry."

"For what?"

"Asking." Seaver turned and went to sit down.

"Good morning, angels. New information to report. The blood at the crime scene matched type to Charlie Sparks, so we can assume that he is the injured party." Garcia spoke.

"Well, shell casings by the door says that he was shot. Are we looking at a robbery gone wrong?" Morgan looked up from the file.

"No robber would break into a family residence before the start of school and not expect to find people home." Fleur sighed.

"No, I think he came for Charlie and Alison Sparks." Hotch agreed,"He planned the abduction and gained entry to the house."

"But the scene is frenzied, disorganised. He didn't think it through." Rossi shook his head.

"I hate to say it, but could Sammy be our Unsub?" Seaver looked around.

"I don't think so." Elijah crossed his arms,"What's the number one motive in kidnapping?"

"Financial gain." Seaver nodded slowly.

"Yeah, well, if that's the case, they're barking up the wrong money tree. The family owns a music store that's been Sparks-owned since the 1940's, but business is down and a loan against the house is the only thing keeping the store afloat." Garcia informed them.

"The UnSub should've done his research." Rossi shrugged.

"Well, he may have. This area was devastated by the oil spill. A little bit of money would go a long way here." Emily sighed.

*********************************

Elijah, Fleur and Reid walked into the room where Sammy was, he was continuously drawing 'L' over his notebook.

"Hi, Sammy. I'm Doctor Spencer Reid. These are my friends, Fleur Howards and Elijah Deans." Reid spoke softly, looking down at him,"What are you drawing?"

The officer leaned down, touching Sammy's shoulder which caused him to shout out, rocking back and forth.

"Some autistic children don't handle touch well." Elijah told him.

"It's possible that witnessing his parents abduction pushed him into emotional overload and he shut down." Reid sighed.

Elijah looked down at Sammy's notebook,"Is he.. Trying to tell us something?"

"Sammy." Fleur crouched down,"We're looking for your mom and dad. Did L take them?"

Sammy didn't look at any of them but he raised his hand and began repeatedly writing 'L' in the air.

Fleur sighed as she got up, leaving to call Garcia.

"Yes, Flo?" Garcia hummed as she answered.

"I need you to run a list of all known associates to the Sparks family, focusing on everyone whose first or last name begins with the letter L." Fleur explained.

"On it." Garcia nodded as she began to type.

*********************************

The Agents, plus the principal, Miss Rogers, walked out of the school,"We don't really have special resources to accommodate children like Sammy. So he's in with everyone else."

"Can he comprehend the material?" Rossi asked her.

"Not everything. You know, I've done my best to research alternative teaching methods, but there's only so much I can do." She sighed.

"Children with autism normally think very logically. Their minds can pick up patterns that ours normally wouldn't recognize." Reid explained.

"Yes, that's right." Miss Rogers nodded,"I've found that repetition and routine are the best ways to get through to him."

"You know, that makes sense. Repetition forms patterns on the brain, and as those patterns reoccur, it forms a calming influence on the child."

"Which would allow new information to be retained. I'm sure Sammys parents figured that out, too." Rossi hummed.

"His parents most likely kept him on a strict, daily schedule." Elijah nodded.

"Like clockwork." She chuckled.

"That's how Sammy was able to walk from his house to school yesterday. He'd memorized the route." Rossi crossed his arms.

"Yeah, it's 7:45, time for him to go to school. He doesn't think to wait for his mom or dad." Fleur shook her head,"He simply grabs an empty lunchbox and heads there."

"If Sammy was living on a strict routine, that means Charlie and Alison were too." Elijah pointed out.

"Which would have only made them easier targets." Reid sighed.

*********************************

"I'm not sure how we're going to get through to him." Reid sighed as he walked into the room,"Sammy's teacher says he's never eveb been able to return his own mother's hug."

"Garcia, what you got?" Emily asked.

"E, I wish I could be more help. If this is about money, it would be a hell of a lot easier for me to give you a list of people who wouldn't need it, and I'd probably save a forest in the process." Garcia told them,"Due to the spill, fisherman and fishing-related industries were hit the worst."

"Sheriff, was it common knowledge that the Sparks had gotten this loan?" Hotch asked.

"I knew. A loan around here is like winning the lottery." He nodded.

"So why no ransom note?" Fleur sighed.

"Maybe the Unsub thinks he can get the money directly from the source, cut out the middle man." Morgan suggested.

"You think he'll use one of the parents as leverage to get the other to clean the accounts." Seaver nodded.

"He's already shot Charlie. It shouldn't be that hard to manipulate Alison into doing what he wants if he offers medical assistance in exchange." Elijah shrugged.

"I think he just did." Garcia spoke.

"What have you got?" Hotch asked her.

"I froze the Sparks assets earlier today, but someone at the Bayside branch one parish over just managed to withdraw ten thousand dollars from their joint savings account." Garcia told them.

"Call the branch. If they're still there, don't let them leave." Hotch instructed.

"Yeah."

"We're probably too late." Emily shook her head.

"If the UnSub has what he's after, Sammy's parents just became expendable." Rossi sighed.

*********************************

Elijah, Rossi and Reid entered the Sparks home with Sammy and his aunt, Lizzie, Sammy immediately walking over to the piano.

"When was the last time you saw him?" Rossi asked Lizzie.

"On his fifth birthday." She answered.

"Five years."

"Charlie and I had a fight. It got ugly. I haven't seen either one of them since." Lizzie told them,"Do you think Charlie's going to be okay?"

"I'm hopeful." Rossi nodded.

"Sammy, would it be alright if I sat here?" Reid asked as he sat beside Sammy on the piano stool.

Sammy just looked ahead. Reid looked down at the piano before playing an ascending scale with his right hand. Sammy looked at him before copying Reid.

"Woah, you've been holding out on me, Sammy." Reid smiled before playing a descending scale.

"I didn't know you could play, hun." Elijah hummed.

"I can't. Well, I never have before but it's essentially all math." Reid explained,"Sammy, how about you play this note for 'yes', and this note for 'no'." He played two notes,"Does that sound like something you could do?"

Sammy seemed to think for a moment before he played the 'yes' note.

"Yeah, exactly like that. Now Sammy, do you remember when the man came and took your parents away?"

Sammy looked ahead, playing the 'yes' note again. He pressed it multiple times before he began.. Playing a classical piece?

"Sammy, I don't understand." Reid shook his head,"Does this song mean something to you?

Sammy stopped playing, slowly reaching over and taking Reid's hand, placing it on the piano. He helped Reid play the first two notes before he began playing himself again.

The two played at the piano for a while before Rossi came back after speaking with Lizzie.

"Reid, take a look at this."

"What, at Sammy's flipbook?" Reid got up from the piano.

"Not just a flip book. His routine. Shower, brush teeth, dress. His entire life is planned in order."

"Maybe we can figure out where Sammy met the Unsub." Elijah pointed.

"He already figured it out." Rossi handed Reid and Elijah the flip book.

"Sammy sees his life in pictures. He's been trying to speak with us, but he only knows how to communicate through symbols. Look, it's his language." Reid spread out Sammy's drawings from earlier,"Anchors, like my socks.. And that's the tread on your shoes."

"What does the 'L' mean?" Lizzie asked.

"It's not an 'L'." Reid shook his head.

"It's a time." Elijah realised, holding up the flip book.

"Three o'clock. The time Sammy wants us to know about, the time he met the UnSub." Reid nodded.

"Where was he at three o'clock?" Lizzie questioned.

"Two thirty, music store. He goes there every day after school, he doesn't leave until the store closes at six." Rossi sighed.

Reid adjusted the time on his watch before he walked over to Sammy,"Hey, Sammy. Sammy, it's almost three o'clock. Is there someplace you should be?"

Sammy tapped the watch,"Should be..Store."

He got up, leaving the house. Lizzie went to stop Sammy, but Elijah stepped in front of her.

"No, let him go." He then took out his phone, calling Hotch,"Hotch, I think we've got something."

*********************************

They managed save Sammy's mother, however they didn't get there in time to save his father. Everyone agreed to take the night off and spend it with each other.

"So, where are we headed?" Elijah hummed, resting his head on Reid's shoulder.

"Well, I was thinking about getting a keyboard.

"Gonna play me a song?"

"If you'd like." Reid smiled.

"I would like." Elijah nodded.

"I need to learn some songs first." He nodded.

"Well, you already know part of one, so that's a start."

"It's all just maths." He shrugged.

"I'm sure you'll be great at it." Elijah nudged him.

"I hope so." He hummed.

"You just need practice."

"And I will." Reid nodded, walking into the store.

Elijah hummed as he followed him inside, looking at all the instruments.

"Did you play any instruments?"

"My mother made me take violin lessons when I was younger." Elijah shrugged.

"Yeah?" Reid smiled.

"Yeah."

"Can you still do it?"

"Well, it's been years." Elijah sighed.

"Maybe we could try." Reid pointed towards the violin

"You sure?" Elijah looked at it.

"Yeah, I have enough." Reid smiled,"I'll get a keyboard and you get the violin. I'll pay. As payment for you buying me all my books."

"Aw, Reid. You don't have to." Elijah assured him.

"I want to."

"And you're absolutely sure?"

"I'm one thousand perfect sure."

"Alright then."

Reid smiled,"Pick one."

Elijah looked at the violins before carefully picking one up,"This one."

"That one will do."

"It looks like the one I used to have." He hummed.

"Maybe it can help you get into certain music again." Reid suggested.

"It might." Elijah sighed.

"Here's to hoping." Reid smiled, walking over to the keyboard section.

"Yeah, here's to hoping." Elijah looked down at the violin.

"I think I might.. Get this one." Reid lifted one.

"Be careful, they can be heavy." Elijah chuckled as he walked over.

"You're right." He held it up.

"Need any help?"

"I'm strong." Reid assured him,"Maybe."

"You've got this." Elijah chuckled.

"Is that us then?" He smiled.

"I think so." Elijah nodded.

"Then let's go." Reid walked to the register.

*********************************

Morgan sighed as he tried to get through all his paperwork.

"Everything okay?" Fleur walked into his office.

"Just paperwork." He shook his head, looking up at her.

"Boring." Fleur blew a raspberry.

"I know, but someone's gotta do it." Morgan chuckled.

"Do it tomorrow?"

"It's a tempting offer."

"Could I tempt you with..A movie night with popcorn?"

"Y'know.. I think you could." Morgan pushed the paperwork away from him.

Fleur smiled,"We will also have a guest."

"A guest?"

"A very special guest."

"Oh, a very special guest?" Morgan raised a brow,"Now who is this very special guest?"

"Me!" Garcia ran in, popcorn in her hand.

"Penelope." Morgan smiled.

"Oh come on, I wouldn't miss this."

"I know you wouldn't." Morgan chuckled.

"I brought popcorn, so let's go." Garcia clapped.

"What movie are we going to watch?" Morgan asked them.

"I'm not too sure." Fleur tilted her head.

"Well, what do you want to see?"

"The new Captain America movie." Fleur smiled.

"Sounds like a plan." Morgan hummed.

"Chris Evans in smoking hot, by the way." Garcia pointed.

"Not more handsome than me, right?" Morgan turned to her.

"Obviously not, my Chocolate Prince." Garcia gasped.

"Good to hear." Morgan nodded.

"I think that sounds like a plan." Fleur smiled.

Morgan kissed her cheek,"You girls really make my day, you know that?"

"I would hope we do."

"Well, you do."

"Come on. Movie will start without us." Garcia groaned.

"Dont worry, we won't miss it." Morgan assured her.
