Chapter 62 - The Thirteenth Step

"No, you cannot taste it yet." Fleur pointed.

"Why not?" Morgan sighed.

"Because I said so "

"But it looks so good."

"Of course it looks good, it's mama's recipe." Fleur hummed.

"Come on, just a small taste?" Morgan tried.

Fleur tilted her head,"Here." Shs handed him a spoon.

"Oh, thank you, babygirl." Morgan hummed.

"How does it taste?"

"Amazing, as always." He told her as he licked the spoon.

"Better be." She winked.

"Trust me, it is."

Fleur kissed his cheek,"I love you."

"I love you too." Morgan kissed her back.

"What time is it?"

"I'm not sure." Morgan turned to look at the clock.

"Make sure Addy hasn't slept in, will you?"

"Of course."

Fleur hummed as Derek walked through to Adelaides room.

"Addy, are you up?" Morgan asked, gently pushing open the door.

Adelaide put her phone down,"Hm?" She looked at him from the bed.

"Just making sure you're awake." He hummed.

"Oh I.. I don't feel well today." Addy coughed.

"Is that so?" Morgan crossed his arms, leaning against the door.

"So so." Addy nodded.

"I'll let your mother know." Morgan nodded slowly.

"Thank you." Addy coughed again.

Morgan closed the door behind him, heading back to the kitchen.

"Is she awake?"

"She is." Morgan nodded,"Said she doesn't feel good."

"She doesn't feel good?"

"That what she said."

"Is it the mysterious cough that happens?" Fleur crossed her arms.

"Y'know, I think it was."

"She wants to skip school to see this boy."

"A boy, huh?" Morgan crossed his arms.

"A boy asked her to homecoming and she said yes."

"What's this boy's name? Do you know where he stays?" Morgan questioned.

"Nope and nope. But you go tell her it's not happening, school comes first."

"Don't need to tell me twice." Morgan headed back to Addy's room.

Adelaide quickly headed back into bed, covering herself up.

"Addy?"

"Yes?" Addy coughed.

"You can drop the act. Your mom told me what you're planning." Morgan shook his head.

Adelaide looked at Morgan, groaning,"Dad."

"School comes before boys, kid." Morgan crossed his arms.

"Not always."

"Most times, including this one."

"Fine." Adelaide got up, already dressed.

"I expect you to tell me all about this boy when you get home from school." Morgan pointed.

"Maybe." Addy hummed.

"There ain't no 'maybe' here."

"Fine, Fine." She held up her hands.

"And I'll be telling your uncle about this." Morgan pointed.

"Wh- Dad." Addy gasped.

"He'll find out regardless." Morgan shook his head.

"I want to keep it secret, please."

Morgan sighed,"Alright, but you know you'll need to tell him eventually."

"Okay." She hummed, kissing his cheek,"Bye dad."

"Goodbye, sweetheart." Morgan smiled.

"My headaches bad." Reid sighed.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" Elijah asked him.

"No..I don't think so."

"Have you been to the doctor about them?"

"I'm trying." Reid nodded.

Elijah rubbed Reid's back, he hated seeing his boyfriend like this. In pain.

"I'm sorry. I should be okay." Reid assured him.

"No.. You can't control it." Elijah sighed.

"It should be gone soon." Reid nodded.

Elijah kissed his forehead,"I'll always be here if they get worse."

"Thank you." Reid hummed.

"You're welcome."

"At least the cats are being quiet for once."

"Don't say that, babe." Elijah sighed.

"It's true." He pointed.

"They always wait for you to say that."

"I know." He chuckled.

"I swear, if you've jinxed us before work." Elijah shook his head.

"We'll be at work so it won't matter."

Elijah pulled Reid closer to him,"I suppose you're right."

"We should head off." He kissed his head.

"We should." Elijah sighed.

*********************************

The girls and Elijah were walking towards the Conference Room, Garcia humming as she walked up.

"How's it going, stranger?"

"I'm a little tired. I went salsa dancing last night." Emily told her.

"Oh my god. Like I need another reason to find you amazing." Garcia gasped,"Also- This call for you from a Sean McCallister came to my phone accidently. He sounded very hot and very important."

"Did he leave a message?" Emily asked.

"No, but it's from Paris. A Scottish guy calling from Paris. Know this, Emily, even if he is ugly, Scottish guys are hot." Garcia pointed.

"It's the accent." Fleur nodded.

"I'll keep it in mind." Emily shook her head.

"So, what's the gossip? Is he an ex? International booty call?" Elijah raised a brow.

"No. He's a friend." Emily chuckled.

"Where's Seaver?" Rossi looked around.

"She had to take a test at the Academy." Emily told them.

Fleur looked at Elijah, nudging him as she sat down.

"What a shame." He coughed.

"Hope she fails." She coughed back.

Elijah nodded in agreement as Hotch began handing out files.

"I know we've all seen the news. Mass murder in Miles City, Montana. Six people shot and killed at a gas station." Hotch began.

"Robbery?" Emily asked.

"No apparent motive." Fleur shook her head.

"Any security footage?" Reid looked up at him.

"No. No cameras, no witnesses, Ballistics say we're looking at two shooters." Hotch nodded.

"Well, something at the station must've triggered them. It doesn't look like they had much of a plan." Elijah pointed.

"And it may happen again. Spree killers often repeat themselves." Rossi sighed.

*********************************

"I'm sorry to reroute you to Billings, but last night, this went down." Agent Bates sighed as they all got out of the SUV at the burned down gas station.

"Have you released a statement to the press yet?" Hotch asked.

"No, but it's already hit the air." She shook her head.

"Where's the car they dumped?" Morgan raised a brow.

"It's over there." Bates pointed,"Agents are searching it now. One of the vics said the shooters were a male and a fenale."

"How many people were murdered here?" Elijah asked her.

"Eight. If you add the Miles City killings, we're up to fourteen." She sighed.

"Male-female teams are usually committed to pleasing one another, both mentally and physically." Emily explained.

"These guys are thrill killers. They're aroused by the adrenaline rush. So they're not gonna stop until we catch them." Morgan shook his head.

"So this is just foreplay." Rossi nodded.

*********************************

"This is one hundred miles west of the last gas station. We anticipated them hitting this area, just not here." Emily sighed.

"Maybe this guy tried having sex with one of our Unsubs while the other one was inside." Morgan suggested.

"Cheating on your honeymoon." Emily tutted,"Someone's got a twisted sense of commitment."

"So they steal the liquor from the gas station, they go on a binge and then go to a meeting?" Elijah looked around the inside of the building.

"What if the UnSubs met a meeting?" Fleur suggested.

"They hear each otjers stories and develop a bond becyase of their similar background." He sighed.

"That makes sense. People typically drink to excess because they're unhappy with themselves or their past." Reid nodded.

"From the looks of it, at least one of the Unsubs shot from up front." Rossi pointed.

"Well, if the meeting started at 8:00 and this happened at 8:45, they were probably in the sharing portion of the meeting." Reid told them.

"So maybe they didn't come in here to kill." Morgan nodded slowly.

"What if they really are struggling with sobriety?" Reid suggested,"If they're really working the program, they could be working on the hardest steps.

"Which are?" Hotch raised a brow.

"Seven, eight and nine. Acknowledge your shortcomings, accept responsibility and make amends. The trouble is, these UnSubs already broke one of the most important steps."

"What's that?" Morgan asked.

"The Thirteenth Step. Members aren't supposed to enter relationships with each other while trying to get sober." Reid told them.

*********************************

"We're looking for a young couple from North Dakota, late teens to mid twenties. We belive they may have recently been married." Hotch began the profile,"We're seeing that alcohol plays a significant role in these crimes. It's allowing them to kill freely and recklessly."

"Our UnSubs are killing surrogates who represent those responsible for deep seated wounds. Now, these two most likely met at alcohol support. And they get a sexual charge out of the kill." Morgan added.

"The change from gas changes to alcohol support meetings suggests that one of them might have a slight moral compass that led them to get help." Emily told them.

"Ultimately, we believe one of the pair is a sociopath, while the other is a psychopath." Rossi nodded.

"What's really the difference?" Bates asked them.

"They're similar pathologies, but a sociopath is less likely to participate in criminal activity and can be lured by a dominant, while a psychopath is a consummate leader and likely to engage and destroy anyone in their way. The most recent attack was twelve hours ago, which means they're most likely heading west of Helena and towards Idaho. And surrounding areas should be on alert." Reid nodded.

*********************************

Morgan, Emily and Fleur pulled up outside the gas station that they heard the couple were at.. Just as both of them walked out.

"Get down! They're here!" Morgan shouted as he grabbed his gun.

They could barely get out of the car before the girl, Sydney, began firing at them.

Fleur, Morgan and Emily began shooting back, although Morgan managed to nick Sydney's shoulder.

"Syd!" The boy, Ray, cried out, firing back at the Agents as he pulled Sydney back inside the gas station.

"I'll call Hotch." Emily cursed.

It didn't take long before Hotch and the others pulled up. They were going to have to negotiate over the phone.

"Deans?" Hotch turned to him.

"Already on it." Elijah sighed as he took out his phone and called inside.

"What do you want?" Ray cursed.

"Mr Donovan, how are you doing in there?" Elijah asked him.

"How do you think I'm doing? You shot my girl!"

"No, it was a fellow agent. He had no choice."

"He had a choice. He could've shot me, put him on the phone." Ray ordered.

"I can't do that." Elijah shook her head.

"Yes you can, he needs to fix this crap."

Elijah sighed and he lowered the phone,"Morgan."

"Hello Ray." Morgan answered the phone,"You know if you come out, we can get Sydney to the hospital."

"She doesn't need a hospital. She's strong." Ray insisted.

"Don't be stupid."

"You don't be stupid. Now get your men out if here so we can continue as planned." He pointed.

"We can't do that, Ray and you know it. You got a little girl inside. And god only knows what happened to Sydney's father."

"Justice happened to her father." Ray told him.

"So he's dead?" Morgan raised a brow.

"Damn right he's dead, and this kid's gonna be, too, if you don't get me a car and two tickets to Aruba."

"Alright. Let me see what I can do about that. Is there anything else you need in the meantime?" Morgan asked.

"Some gauze and some booze. And not no cheap kind either." Ray hung up.

*********************************

Ray tried to escape, getting shot down in the car while Sydney bled out. It was unsuccessful.

"Eli, I have something to tell you." Fleur hummed, sitting beside him.

"What is it?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Adelaide..She has a boyfriend."

Elijah froze,"Excuse me?"

"She has a boyfriend."

"I want a name, I want an address and I want a phone number." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Eli." Fleur laughed.

"Hey, I don't trust Addy with someone I don't know."

"I'm still to meet him."

"Well, after you've met him, then I must meet him." He pointed.

"Of course."

Elijah sighed,"It scares me, y'know. She's getting so big mow."

"You're telling me." Fleur sighed, leaning back,"I didn't even get to see her for half of it."

"Well, you get to be here now."

Fleur hummed,"Next it will be marriage, and kids."

"I'm already halfway there, sort of." Elijah smiled.

"I'm hoping for a godchild soon."

"You'll get one at some point."

"Yay." Fleur hummed.

"I'd love a daughter of my own." Elijah looked up.

"Yeah?" Fleur smiled,"You'd be a great dad."

"You think?"

"I know."

"Thanks Flo." Elijah smiled softly.

"I mean, you've grown towards kids over the years." Fleur nodded.

"I try my best."

"You're great."

"I am great." He hummed.

"I can't wait for the day." Fleur kissed his cheek.
