Chapter 6 - Derailed
Elijah hummed as he painted his nails black, having 'borrowed' some nail polish from JJ.
"Hey, so I- Kid, what in God's name are you doing?" Morgan blinked.
"Reid and Fleur keep telling me to stop biting my nails so I thought this might, I don't know, discourage it." Elijah shrugged, blowing on his nails.
"Think it'll work?"
"Not sure, but I hope so." Elijah sighed.
"Has anyone seen Fleur?" Morgan asked the boys.
"She's in Texas." Elijah told him.
"Texas?"
"She's working with Elle on a custodial interview. Child murderer." Reid nodded,"William Devries. He killed five adolescent boys with a sharp object but it was never known exactly what."
"Hotch is letting them do custodials by themselves already?" Morgan asked.
"Morgan, they'll be fine." Elijah assured him.
"Besides, they're quite tough." Reid added.
"And Fleur only gets into trouble when I'm with her." Elijah pointed,"She uses her brain more without me."
"Only sometimes." Morgan sighed.
*********************************
Elle sighed, looking through the file as her and Fleur sat on the train.
"Poor boys had no idea." Fleur shook her head.
"Do you think we should check up on the guys back at the office?" Elle asked, sitting down the file.
"I can give a call to someone." Fleur nodded,"I'll ask Gideon how they are." She got out her phone and called Fideon
"Gideon." He answered.
"It's me." Fleur sighed.
"DeVries cooperating?"
"We won't even be there for another hour. We took a train from El Paso instead of renting a car, wanted to look over files more." Fleur explained.
"Remember, he can't lie to you if-"
"If we know the crime better than he does. Yes, I remember dad." Fleur joked.
"Good, check in when you're done." Gideon nodded.
"Wait-"
"Fleur, I'm swamped here. I'm in the middle of two consults. NSA wants a threat assessment- Terror cell- Hamburg by six o'clock." He began breaking up.
"Gideon? What? I'm losing you."
"Fleur, I don't have time right now. Can we talk when you get back?" Gideon asked.
"Yeah, but- Hello? Gideon- Fucks sake." Fleur cursed and put the phone down,"We lost connection."
"I'm sure they're all okay. They can cope without us, right?"
"Hopefully." Fleur nodded,"Move to the inside seat, we can't risk the files being noticed."
"Good idea. Elle nodded, moving to the window seat across from Fleur.
Fleur went to speak before the train came to a sudden stop.
"What the hell was that?" A young man asked, taking out his earphones as he stood up.
"Don't worry, everything's gonna be alright." A guard walked through.
"What happened?" Elle asked him.
"Nothing Ma'am... You two on the job?" The guard looked down, noticing the files.
"FBI." She nodded.
"Suicide. Somebody jumped in front of the train." The guard sighed, kneeling beside them.
"Is there anything we can do?" Fleur looked at him.
"Unfortunately, we have this procedure down pretty well." The guard nodded before turning to everyone else,"Everyone relax, it's all gonna be fine. We're going to be back on our way shortly."
That's when the guard was grabbed, his gun taken off of him and he was shot twice.
"Elle-" Fleur quickly stood up, going to grab her gun.
That's when the man ran up to her, punching her and grabbing her gun,"Nobody move!"
Fleur fell back down to her seat, looking at the man,"You don't have to hurt anyone else."
"What are you doing?" A woman cried.
"Shut up! Shut up!" The man yelled, waving the guns as her before he looked around frantically.
*********************************
"Okay, this is from one of the security cameras inside the train." JJ began as they entered the conference room,"Six hostages in a car stopped on the tracks. We have one security guard dead from initial gunfire."
"Is this going on right now?" Reid tilted his head.
"Yes, in West Texas." JJ nodded.
"West Texas..?" Elijah muttered, walking closer to the screen.
"Why do they need us?" Morgan asked.
"Becayse of a particular psychological aspect of the hostage taker which we're specially equipped to handle." Hotch explained.
"Hey- Can you back the picture up a few frames?" Elijah asked.
"Tardive dyskinesia." Reid spoke before Elijah could continue.
"Once more for those of us without an encyclopedic memory?" Morgan raised a brow.
"Severe facial tics. The kind that develop after years of taking antipsychotic medication." Reid explained.
"So this guys a psychotic." Morgan nodded.
"A psychotic with hostages." Hotch hummed.
"And two guns." JJ added.
"Hostage situation on a train?" Gideon asked as he walked in, Elijah still staring at the screen.
"Yeah, in Texas." JJ nodded.
"A train in Texas.." Gideon sighed.
"Shit, I was right." Elijah muttered before turning to others,"My best friend is on that fucking train."
"... My god, It's Fleur and Elle." Gideon looked at Elijah.
"Move it, people. We're going." Elijah shook his head, practically running out of the room.
"You heard the man." Morgan clapped.
*********************************.
"Local authorities have the train surrounded. Bureau Hostage Rescue Team snipers are in position but they're hesitant to take action until negotiations have been exhausted." JJ explained,"The feed from the trains two video cameras are being routed to monitors on a mobile command center that local Bureau office brought in." She added.
"We need to know who on that train's going to help and who's going to be a problem." Hotch told her.
"Let me get Garcia to work some magic on those videos feeds." Morgan called her.
"Cómo se dice, Hottie?" Garcia answered.
"Garcia."
"Precisely." She hummed.
"Okay, listen to me. No playing. We're going to be feeding you some security camera videos from a hostage situation over a secure line. Can you work your facial recognition software over it and tell me who's who?" Morgan asked.
"If they have their pictures anywhere on file, I will find them." Garcia nodded.
"Penelope... Fleur and Elle are amongst the hostages." Morgan sighed.
"I'm into it." Garcia hung up.
"She'll get us the names." Morgan nodded to Hotch.
"Have we had any contact from inside the train yet?" Gideon asked.
"Well, it took two hours just to convince him to allow a two way phone. But he won't speak to anyone except what he calls the Higher Authorities." JJ sighed.
"God?" Elijah raised a brow.
"No mention of religion thus far." JJ shook her hesd.
"Has Crisis Negotiation lead claimed to be the Higher Authority?" Hotch asked.
"The Unsub won't speak to him any longer." JJ sighed,"He's given a deadline of three hours to produce this Authority."
"Three... When was that?" Reid turned.
"Uh... Two and a half hours ago." JJ told him.
"Well, he wants to speak to the Higher Authority." Hotch shrugged.
"Then we better give it to him." Gideon nodded.
"Put the lights on, sirens, honk the horn." Elijah shook his head,"Make people get out of our way."
"Get as close to the barricade as possible. When we stop, we sit. We wait thirty seconds, then we step out." Gideon ordered.
Meanwhile both girls on the train had been cuffed to the seats they were on and separated. The Unsub couldn't risk Agents on the lose or plotting. He was on a chair, anxiously peeking over the edge to look out of the window as the black SUV pulled up, sirens blaring.
"Teddy, you have to listen to me." A woman began to speak.
"No! You have to listen to me now." Teddy pointed the gun at her.
"Lady, your boyfriend is whacked out of his mind." The younger man turned to her.
"He's not my boyfriend.' The woman shook her head.
"Who is he then?" A man with glasses asked.
"He's a psych patient, right?" Elle turned the best she could.
"Yes, and it's going to be okay." The woman assured her.
"And you know that how?" The man with glasses shook his head.
"You're his doctor?" Elle asked.
"I was taking him to Dallas to have him speak at a conference as an example of the progress we had made to relieve severe psychosis." The doctor explained.
"He's an example of progress?" The younger man scoffed.
"What can we do to calm him?" Fleur looked at the doctor.
"He's never had this sort of break from reality, never been violent." The doctor shook her head.
"What can we do?" Fleur repeated.
"Make him feel less threatened." She answered.
"We're a threat to him?" The younger man blinked,"He's got two guns."
Another woman, a ginger began rocking back and forth.
"You alright?" Elle looked over at her.
"No- I think I'm going to be sick." She wretched, throwing up on the floor.
"Oh god." The younger boy groaned.
"You okay?" Fleur sighed.
"Yeah.." The ginger woman nodded,"I just haven't been feeling that well lately... My stomach."
"..You're not pregnant?" Fleur blinked before turning to the doctor.
"Teddy?" The doctor stood up, speaking calmly,"Teddy, please, this girl is sick."
"Shut up! Sit down!" Teddy pointed the gun at her again.
The doctor slowly sat down as the man with glasses sank slightly in his seat, reaching into his briefcase
"What are you doing?" The younger man asked.
"Don't be stupid." Elle warned.
The man then pulled out a Bible.
"Are you kidding me?" The younger man asked,"What are you gonna do? Throw it at him?"
"What is taking them so long? Come on!" Teddy shouted, making the ginger haired woman jump.
"Whacked out of his mind." The younger man shook his head, taking a drink of his alcohol.
Outside, the team finally got out of the car.
"Don't look at the train, ignore it. Higher Authority isn't concerned about losing a few civilians." Gideon ordered.
"I'll talk to the field commander." Hotch nodded.
"I'm Frank Moretti. Dallas Field Office." Moretti nodded.
"Hi." Elijah nodded to him.
"As near as we can tell, your agents are still alright." Moretti shook Elijah's hand.
"Has the suspect asked for anything? Made any demands?" Gideon asked.
"Not beyond wanting to talk to a Higher Authority. How do we negotiate with a psychotic who won't talk to us?"
"That depends on the level of his particular delusion." Elijah put on his sunglasses.
"Some psychotic believe they're being sent messages by the government, God, even aliens. John Nash, he believed he was being recruited by aliens to save the world." Reid hummed.
"I saw the movie." Moretti nodded
"Actually the movie is rather inaccurate in its portrayal of-"
"Okay, Doc, Doc." Morgan patted his shoulder,"A movie review's not gonna help us now. Let's move."
"You're right, sorry." Reid nodded and walked with Morgan and the others.
*********************************
"So the question of the day.." Morgan sighed.
"What does he believe is happening here?" Elijah asked.
"Good luck. I tried to convince him I was the Highest Authority but he wouldn't believe me." Moretti sighed.
"Well, he's paranoid. He believes in secrets." Gideon nodded.
"If I'm the Higher Authority, I don't go to him. He comes to me." Elijah crossed his arms,"We have to help him ask the first question."
"Hey guys?' Reid pointed to the camera.
On the train, Teddy was pacing back and forth until he began walking towards the ginger woman
"Ted, you have to try and concentrate-" The Doctor began.
"Get up!" Teddy grabbed the ginger haired woman's hair.
"Take me- Take me." Fleur leaned over her chair.
"You think I'm gonna let you send then messages?" Teddy snapped.
"They're going to want to talk to me. To one of us." Fleur nodded to Elle,"We can get you whatever it is you want. Take me!" She looked into Teddy's eyes.
"Hey man-" The younger man stood up but Teddy hit him with the gun, knocking him down.
"You too?" Teddy then pointed the gun towards the man wearing glasses.
"No, no, I didn't do anything!" He shook his head.
"Ted, you're not in any danger here. You have to believe me!" The doctor pleaded as he grabbed the ginger woman again.
"Please." Fleur tried but she leaned back, looking at Elle,"Can you get out?" She gestured to the cuffs.
Elle shook her head as Teddy dragged the ginger woman across the floor.
"You don't say a single word unless I say it. You deviate a single word and I kill you." Teddy threatened her as he stopped by the phone,"Do not try to shed them any secret messages or codes, do you understand?"
"Codes?" The ginger shook her head.
"Do you understand?" Teddy raised his voice, the gun pointed at her head.
"Yes! Yes! Alright!" She picked up the phone.
"Dean." Gideon nodded.
"I'm already on it, sir." Elijah turned to the phone as it rang, answering it,"Yes?"
"Ask him who they are, the ones who just arrived." Teddy muttered to the woman.
"He wants to know who you are, he wants to know who just arrived." The woman sniffled.
"Tell him it's someone who can help resolve this situation." Elijah answered.
"He says it's someone who can resolve the situation." The woman quickly said.
"What part of the government do they work for?" Teddy whispered in her ear.
"What- What part of the government do you work for?" The woman cried.
"I never said I was with the government." Elijah shook his head.
"Wait.' Morgan muted the call before the other officer could say anything,"The less he says, the more mysterious we seem, the higher an authority we become."
"What- What part of the government.." The woman cried as Teddy pointed the gun to her stomach.
"Don't hurt her." Elle spoke as the two girls tried to get the cuffs off.
"Ask who they work for. No! Ask if they're NSA. No, Ask..." Teddy looked back at the girls,"They're FBI, aren't they?"
"Are you FBI?" She asked.
Elijah glared at the screen,"He can ask me himself."
"He said you can ask him yourself." She shakily handed the phone to him.
"Tell me who you are or these agents die.' Teddy spoke.
"You know who I am." Elijah didn't take his eyes of the screen.
"If you're the Higher Authority, then you can have it removed."
Elijah shook his head,"It'll take some time."
"I want it removed now."
"You know..." Elijah held his hand out, stopping Morgan as he went to walk over,"You know it can't be done that quickly. Goodbye."
"No! Wait! One hour... You have one hour to remove it. Or I swear to god, I'll kill every agent on this train." Teddy hung up.
"It'? He wants 'it' removed? Do you know what it is?" Moretti asked.
Elijah took off his sunglasses, sighing into his hands,"No, but I just bought us an hour to figure out."
After twenty minutes, Moretti began tapping his pen against the desk,"We have forty minutes left."
"Reid, is there a delusion more common that others in a paranoid mind in a psychotic episode?" Hotch asked.
"Delusions are as varied as the people that have them. They're coloured by personal experience." Reid explained.
*********************************
Fleur pulled at her cuff before turning to the group who were sitting together,"Any of you guys have a cell phone with service."
"We're in the middle of nowhere, welcome to Texas- Ow.' The younger man hissed as the doctor tended to the cut on his face.
"You're bleeding more than you should from a cut this small." The doctor, Linda, shook her head.
"Thin blood." He shrugged.
Elle turned,"The agents outside need to know what 'it' is that he wants removed."
"He thinks the government is watching him, monitoring him." Linda sighed.
"They monitor all of us. They have ways of finding out everything you do." The younger boy, Josh, held the cloth to his head.
"Don't be stupid." The man with glasses, Anderson, shook his head.
"There's two FBI agents on board, you think that's a coincidence?" Josh pointed.
"I'm doing it!" Teddy yelled, before going back to sitting in silence.
"He's going to kill us, isn't he?" Anderson asked.
"No." Linda sighed.
"He killed that security guard." Josh leaned forward.
"That security guard had a gun, he felt threatened by him." Linda shook her head.
"It's so hot!" Teddy groaned.
"You took hostages in the middle of Texas." Josh stood up,"Of course it's hot."
Teddy then began to walk forward, going to grab Josh.
"No!" Linda stepped in front of him,"That's exactly what they want, Ted. They want to divert you from having it removed.
Ted shook his head, looking down.
"You're close to having it removed." Linda took Teddy's arm where some scars were.
"His arm." Elijah sat up, chewing on the leg of his sunglasses.
"What?" Hotch turned.
"Look at his arm." Elijah pointed.
"What is that?' Reid leaned next to Elijah.
"They look like scars." Morgan furrowed his brow.
"From where he tried to dig it out with a razor or pen." Elijah shook his head.
"Dig what out?" Moretti turned towards them.
"Maybe a microchip." Hotch suggested.
"Oh man. It's almost as common a delusion as claiming to be the new Messiah. Ralph Tortorici held an entire classroom hostage because he believed microchips had been implanted in his body." Reid nodded.
"Wait a minute, so this guy thinks he's got a device stuck in his arm?" Morgan asked.
"Probably. And if we don't take it out, he's going to kill somebody." Giseon sighed.
That's when Morgan's phone rang and he walked off.
"Must be Garcia." Elijah sighed, putting his sunglasses back on.
"Tell me about the hostages." Gideon turned to Morgan once he was off the call.
"Okay, see, first we have Harry Anderson. He's a paper goods salesman, lived in a small town outside of Dallas for eighteen years with his wife. No children, no investments, no retirement portfolio." Morgan told him.
"He doesn't take chances. Tell me about the kid." Gideon pointed.
"Josh Patel, he's twenty years old. He just got expelled from Gilette University for driving into the library building drunk." Morgan explained.
"He's drinking now, we don't need a drunk in there." He shook his head.
"Okay, the girl, we don't have a lot to go on, nothing more than her driver's license. Her name is Elaine Curtis. She lives in a small town in West Texas, no credit card, no passport, doesn't look like she travels much at all." Morgan sighed.
"This is Dr Linda Deaton. She's a psychiatrist at Stokes Mental Health Centre in El Paso. That's where Ted Bryars been living for the past nine years." Hotch read.
"His doctor?" Gideon raised a brow.
"I'd say so. She's unmarried, lives in El Paso, she's written several books and papers, mainly published in medical circles. She's a popular lecturer. She's scheduled yo speak several symposiums this year, and tonight in Dallas. That's it, all I got. Garcia is in the process of looking deeper but I don't really know how this lineup is going to be much help to us, Gideon." Morgan sighed.
"Well, let's just hope none of them make the situation worse." Gideon shook his hesd.
Back on the train, Anderson leaned over to the girls,"Hey, why aren't they helping us?"
"We're going to get through this just fine." Elle assured him.
"We? He isn't pissed at us. You two are the government agents." Josh pointed.
"He probably thinks we're all government agents, he think almost everyone is." Linda sighed.
Josh stood up,"I'm not any government agent. I'm with you, Big Brother, right? Newthink, Newspeak? Hate is love, war is peace.
"Stop it!" Teddy pointed the gun at him.
"Ted, no! He didn't mean anything." Linda got up.
"Yeah, chill, I support you. Screw the government." Josh nodded.
"Make him sit down.' Teddy pointed the gun at Linda.
Linda nodded to Josh and sat down, as Teddy sat down as well.
*********************************
"Alright, how do we remove a microchip that's not there?" Hotch asked.
"His speech is lucid, there are no signs on neologisms, word salad or loosening of associations. As long as he can systematize, he'll be able to keep his thinking relatively organized." Reid explained.
"Organise enough to see through any game we try to throw at him?" Morgan leaned back.
"And if he's convinced it's in his arm and not in a place like his neck or lower back.." Hotch sighed.
"An incision means he's going to be watching." Gideon looked over at Elijah.
"Maybe we can convince him that he's been looking in the wrong place." Morgan suggested.
"Or we could fake it." Elijah bit his cheek.
"Conceal a chip in the palm. A little slight of hand." Reid waved his fingers.
"Come on, Reid. What are you talking about? A magic trick?" Morgan sighed.
"Yes, I'm talking about a magic trick." Reid nodded.
"No.' Hotch shook his head.
"I used to do it during college exams. I can make it appear, I can make it disappear." Reid showed him a penny trick
"We can't risk giving him another agent as a hostage." Hotch pointed.
"We have to do something." Reid sighed.
"Alright Reid, let's go, teach it to me." Elijah stood up.
"What? No.' Reid shook his head.
"Look, if you can do it, I could probably figure it out. Show me."
"I've been practicing this my whole life, we have less than thirty minutes." Reid sighed.
"Reid, I am not about to let you get on that train with an armed psychotic." Elijah shook his head.
"We don't have any other choice, do we?" Reid bit his lip.
"No, we don't have any other choice." Gideon stood up.
"You can't be serious." Elijah looked between them.
"I'll be okay." Reid assured Elijah.
"You don't know that."
"You have full permission to... Slap me if it doesn't go to plan."
"I'm holding you to that, pretty boy." Elijah crossed his arms.
Reid gave a small smile as he walked off to get his vest.
*********************************
"What we need is a strategy." Fleur leaned back in her chair
"I'll try to talk to him." Linda stood up.
"You think that's wise?" Elle raised a brow.
"Ted?" Linda began walking towards him,"Yoi feel a bit better now?"
Ted turned to Linda, clenching his face up.
"You're in no danger here, these people don't want to hurt you." Linda assured him,"The FBI Agents just happened to be on the train today. They weren't following you, weren't watching you."
Ted had turned, looking at another chair before turning back to Linda.
"Let them go, Ted. I'll stay with you. You and I will do this together only you have to let these people go." Linda assured him,"We don't want to hurt you."
Ted squinted his eyes, grabbing his gun and pointed it,"No!"
"No, it's okay. Ted, it's okay!" Linda backed away.
"We will meet sure that they never take it out of you." Fleur leaned forward, grabbing the gun,"If you hurt one more person on this train I swear to god, I'll make them leave it in you forever." She threatened as the phone rang.
Teddy looked between Fleur and the phone before running to it, answering,"What?"
"Everything okay in there, Dr Bryar?" Elijah asked.
"I want it out." Ted told him.
"Well, I'm sending in two technicians to remove it." Elijah told him.
"No! One. One technician."
"Well, it's a delicate procedure. It requires-" Elijah tried.
"One technician! Or every agent on this train dies."
"Okay, you need to relax, we still have twenty minutes."
"Not anymore... I want it out. Right now- Now!" Ted shouted, hanging up.
"Shit." Elijah muttered as he walked to find Reid and Morgan.
Morgan was helping Reid put his vest on while Elijah walked over.
"Reid, don't you dare take off that vest when you're in there." Elijah pointed.
Reid nodded,"I won't, I know better."
"In hostage situations sometimes SWAT won't even tell the negotiator when they're going in. You know why that is?" Elijah asked.
"The slightest change of tone of voice or choice of words can give the whole thing away." Reid nodded again.
"That's right." Morgan patted his shoulder,"When you get in there, do not make eye contact with Fleur or Elle. You're a technician, you've never seen them before."
"I got it."
"And remember, play into the guy's fantasy, believe it yourself." Elijah sighed.
"Actually, did you know that dentists and surgeons have been recruited to secretly implant these during otherwise normal medical procedures? This has been happening on and off since the late 1930s." Reid told them, looking at the two,"You told me to believe."
"Alright, let's go." Morgan chuckled.
The boys turned, going outside as Reid began to try his trick, it not working.
"You've gotta relax, man." Morgan sighed.
"It's smaller than I'm used to." Reid sighed as he dropped it.
"I'm pulling the plug on this." Gideon shook his head.
"No, no. Just wait." Reid shook his head, looking at Elijah before he slowly did the trick.
"You take the chip out and then you get off the train, you hear me?" Elijah pointed.
Reid nodded slowly.
"Tell him you need to get back to Higher Authority, say you have guidelines you need to follow, whatever. Do not stay in there with him, that's an order." Gideon instructed.
"Yes, sir." Reid turned and went to walk away before stopping,"Can you guys do me a favour?"
"Anything." Morgan nodded.
"Can at least one of you look like you're going to see me again?" Reid looked between them.
"See you when you get back." Hotch nodded, still deadpan.
When Reid walked in, he saw Ted holding Elaine at gunpoint, the gun pointing at her stomach,"That's far enough."
"Hello everyone." Reid looked around before clearing his throat,"I'm here to remove a chip from Dr Bryar?"
"Take the vest off, I wanna see you."
"I don't have any weapons." Reid shook his head,"The Higher Authority doesn't authorize it for technicians."
"Take it off!" He ordered
Reid did as he was told, taking the vest off.
"Goddammit Reid, I told you not to take the vest off." Elijah sighed, watching from back in the office.
"Come closer, I want to see both hands at all times. You sit across from me." He pointed as he sat down.
Reid sat down as well, his hands still kept visible.
"Why are you so nervous?" Ted tilted his head.
"I told you, I'm not used to being around guns." Reid answered, preparing his scalpel.
It took a minute, however Reid eventually 'pulled' the chip out.
"I knew it, I knew it." Ted smiled.
"Hey, look. He's got it, he's got the chip." Morgan pointed.
"Now, I have to go to the Higher Authority." Reid stood up,"I'm supposed to-"
"Not yet! Turn it on." Ted pointed the gun at him,"Turn the chip on."
"Excuse me?" Reid blinked.
"Get off the train, Reid." Elijah shook his head.
"No, no. Something's wrong.' JJ looked at the camera.
"Turn it on... Or I pull the trigger."
"I can't turn it on." Reid told him.
"Why not? Why not?" Ted asked.
"It has to be implanted." Fleur spoke up.
"She's right. The chip derives power from tiny electrical impulses fired between neurons. It has to be in your skin to work." Reid explained as he stood up again,"Now I really gotta-"
"Sit down! You're not going anywhere." Ted ordered.
"See? Dude actually had a chip in his arm." Josh whispered as Ted slowly backed away from Reid.
"It seems calm for now." JJ sighed.
"But Reid's still on the train, we've got three agents in there." Elijah put his head in his hands.
Gideon pressed the button and called the phone in the train.
"It's probably the Higher Authority." Reid told Ted,"I told you, I have protocol to follow. I was supposed to go straight back out there, I have rules."
Ted just looked at Reid.
"You want me to stay, obviously I'm going to stay. But, I mean, you're the one who's going to need to explain it to The Man." Reid continued.
"Why can't you all just leave me alone?" Ted asked.
"Lesve you alone?" Josh stood up.
"Stay out of this." Reid shook his head.
"No, the government does listen to us. You got microwaves and satellites. I'm with you, man." Josh pointed.
"Do not agitate him." Reid warned Josh before turning to Ted,"Dr Bryar, answer the phone."
"My old man used to have tracking devices in his cars. He says it's for theft but it's really so he can find out where I go. And what about personal recordings in televisions? You don't think someone is monitoring everything you watch? You know how many patents are issued for devices to monitor people? Look it up man." Josh scoffed.
"Answer the phone, Ted." Elle nodded.
"Stop this. It isn't going to help." Linda grabbed Josh.
"What the hell do you know?" Josh scoffed.
"Ted, he doesn't know what he's talking about. He's just a kid." Linda assured Ted.
"Who are you calling a kid?"
"Sit down!" Fleur turned to look at him.
"Oh, so now you're gonna tell me what to do. He'd only have one gun if you weren't here." Josh pointed,"I'm with you, man."
"Answer the phone Dr Bryar. Its the Higher Authority." Reid sighed while Josh moved forward.
"No!" Ted stood up, firing his gun.
When everyone turned, Linda had stepped in front of Josh, the bullet hitting her.
"Teddy.." She held her side.
"Oh, damn... Damn!" Josh caught Linda as she fell, landing on the ground with her.
Ted then slowly backed up to the phone, picking it up as Reid hurried to try and help Linda.
"What?"
"What happened, Ted?" Elijah asked him,"I did what!t you asked for."
"I'm tired... I've been fighting for so long." Ted sighed.
"You don't have to fight anymore." Elijah assured him.
"I said it all ends today. Me and these agents... It ends today." Ted hung up.
"What does that mean?" JJ asked.
"It means he's decided on an endgame." Hotch held his head.
"He's going to kill himself and the hostages." Elijah stared forward at the screen.
Gideon then pressed the button again.
While the phone rang, Fleur and Elle looked at each other until one of them spoke,"Ted, no one on this train but us two are agents. No one else... We're the only ones, you can let the others go."
Ted shook his head, rocking back and forth.
"Dr Bryar, we need to get this woman helo." Reid told him.
"Who's going to help me?" Ted asked.
"The Higher Authorities can, they're not what you think. They're not the enemy. They can help you, Dr Bryar." Reid told him.
Ted then got up, raising his gun at the phone and shot it, bowing it up into tiny pieces,"Not anymore." He sat back down.
"Let me know when HRT's ready." Gideon sighed.
"Got it.' Hotch ran off.
"Gideon, you send those guys in, hostages are going to die. Our Agents are going to die." Morgan walked over.
"If we don't do something, they're gonna die anyway." Gideon shook his head.
"It's not gone... Well, you said when the chip came out, it would go away. It's- I still hear it. You said it was the only one, Leo. I can still... Feel the buzzing- The burning." Ted scratched his face.
"Dr Bryar?" Reid spoke up.
"Reid." The girls turned.
"It's alright, you two." Reid assured them.
"Is there another one?" Ted pointed the gun at Reid.
"You know there isn't." Reid smiled,"If there was, Leo would've told you."
"Make it stop!" Ted covered his ears.
"I know what it's like." Reid told him,"I know what the voices are like. The voices, they won't stop. They've been talking to you since you were a child."
"You're lying to me." Ted turned the gun back on Reid.
"That's Leo speaking, that's not even Dr Bryar. Why don't you let him think for himself, Leo?" Reid asked.
"You... You can see him?" Ted lowered the gun.
"Yeah, he's right there." Reid nodded,"Why don't you let him make his own decisions?"
Ted looked between the two, Reid and Leo. Who should he listen to?
"The voices, they helped you. That's where you get your ideas from, right?" Reid stood up, "While the other kids were out in the playground you were reading, studying, learning. The voice, they helped you understand things other people couldn't.. Realize.. And- And then as you grew older, it became almost a responsibility. Right? A responsibility to use that ability, to use your knowledge."
"String theory, the Theory of Everything." Ted nodded slowly.
"Then M-Theory, encompassing the strings, unifying the theories. You know what's funny? Most people say that M-Theory can never be proved because the mathematical tools do not exist yet. But you see, right? Am I right? You can see the different strings unifying the dimensions. The gravitational infinities cancelling each other out. You see them, right, Dr. Bryar? You see them because you have the tools, your mind is that tool." Reid tapped his head.
"Shut up!" Ted yelled at 'Leo'.
"This has gone on too long. Fuck it, I'm going in." Elijah turned and ram out of the office.
"I have to believe that if you put your mind to it, you'll realise only you can make Leo stop. You can make him stop by understanding him, by understanding that he is a liar. and he only wants bad things for you. I need to believe that, Dr Bryar." Reid nodded.
Both girls then quickly grabbed the gun from Ted, although he had grabbed it and fell backwards just as a gunshot rung out. When Elijah ran in, it was Anderson stood holding the gun.
"I had to, he was going to kill us. God forgive me, I had to.."
"We need an ambulance.." Reid sighed.
Soon enough, Bryar had been taken out of the train and placed on a stretcher, all he was saying was 'Sorry'.
"Little late for that." Morgan sighed and walked off to Fleur who quickly hugged him,"Someone's happy to see me." Morgan chuckled.
"Just happy to get out those cuffs." Fleur admitted.
"He didn't hurt you guys much, did he?" Morgan asked.
"Elle's okay, I got the most of it." She showed her bruised cheek.
"Maybe you should see the medic, get checked out."
"I'll be fine. Gideon, tell him I don't need to see a medic." Fleur waved him over.
"Regulations are regulations." Gideon shrugged,"You alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine dad." Fleur joked.
"Fleur?"
"Hm?"
"Don't call me dad again." Gideon then walked off
"How do you think he'd feel about mom?" Fleur smiled, turning to Morgan.
Morgan smiled,"Let me know when you're gonna do that, so I can run."
Fleur chuckled and got up,"I'll see the medic."
"Sorry I took off the vest." Reid sighed as he walked up to Elijah
"You better be, do you know how worried I was for you three?" Elijah crossed his arms.
"We all came out unharmed, mostly." Reid nodded.
"You put yourself in danger."
"And I came out of it unharmed." Reid sighed,"Don't worry."
"Don't worry? Don't worry!?" Elijah took off his sunglasses,"I care about you guys, of course I'm going to worry!"
"Is that a tear?" Reid pointed.
"No." Elijah quickly rubbed his eyes.
Reid smiled softly,"It's nice to know you care."
"You guys are my family." Elijah smiled back.
"Thanks for negotiating for my life, Eli." Fleur walked over.
"I'm just your hero." Elijah hummed.
Fleur looked at his hands,"You painted your nails?"
"I did." Elijah smiled,"And hey! I haven't bit my nails once."
"I'm proud of you." Reid gently patted his back.
Elijah looked between them before pulling them into a hug,"Do anything like this again and I'll kill you."
The two let out a laugh, shaking their heads.
"Cannot promise anything." Fleur shrugged.
