Chapter 55 - The Longest Night
Everyone had met up outside Kristin's apartment. Hotch and Emily had been inside but it was empty.
"Spicer's sister's not in her apartment." Hotch shook his head,"The building manager said she left hours ago."
"Morgan and Spicer?" Fleur asked.
"No one's been in or out since the power went down." Emily sighed.
"Morgan said they were coming here, right?" Kurzbard looked at them.
"And he was a lot closer than any of us." Hotch nodded.
"Something must have changed." Emily shook her head.
"The cells are down. Now, how the hell do we find them?" Kurzbard questioned.
"What would cause Morgan to change his mind like that when he knows he can't tell us?" Rossi sighed.
"The Unsub had Spicer's sister and daughter. Morgan knew he didn't have a lot of time." Hotch crossed his arms.
"So his first guess had to be right."
"The Unsub attacked Spicer specifically through his family." Emily began.
"How long has Spicer's sister lived here?" Hotch asked Kurzbard.
"Six, seven months." He nodded.
"Well that's why they didn't come here." Fleur shook her head.
"If the Unsub wants to hurt Spicer, he'll do it someplace that means something to him. Morgan must've realized the same thing." Emily pointed.
"The UnSub and Spicer do share one place in common." Rossi realised.
"Santa Monica." Kurzbard blinked.
"Where he killed his parents."
"Let's go." Hotch nodded.
*********************************
The team finally arrived at Santa Monica, they didn't know who was safe or...Even alive.
Kurzbard immediately walked up to the detective inside, Stansfield.
"Spicer?"
"Kurz, we got here as fast as we could." Stansfield shook his head.
Kurzbard sighed,"What about Kristin?"
"She was beaten and sexually assaulted. She's out in the ambulance. And you already know the bad guy took Ellie with him. One more thing, a couple was murdered about a mile away from here an hour ago. We got a team there, but we're pretty sure it was the same guy."
Kurzbard looked down,"Where's Matt?"
Stansfield sighed and lead Kurzbard to the room with Spicer's body.
"I don't wanna go in." Fleur shook her head, looking at Elijah,"I don't know if he's okay."
"Look, everything will be just-" Elijah was cut off by a familiar voice.
"Ah! Dammit. Just put a bandage on it and leave me alone."
Fleur looked at Elijah before she sped in,"Derek."
"How is he?" Hotch asked.
"It's nothing, Hotch." Morgan insisted.
"He needs a CAT scan, stitches and a lot of rest." The paramedic sighed.
"I'll make sure he gets it." Fleur nodded.
"Guys, I'm not going to any hospital until we find that little girl." Morgan told them,"Now, please, just put a bandage on it."
"Morgan, what's the notebook?" Hotch asked.
"I asked the sister to tell me everything she could remember about the Unsub." Morgan handed it over.
"And what's her condition?" Fleur asked, sitting beside Morgan.
Morgan sighed,"It's bad."
"I'll go check on her." Emily walked out.
A few minutes later, Reid and JJ arrived and walked inside.
"Derek." JJ blinked.
"I'm alright." Derek shook his head.
"You don't look alright." Reid pointed.
"Reid, drop it." Morgan sighed.
"Sorry." Reid looked down.
"The local bureau office found us these satellite phones. It should bypass any outage problems on the ground." JJ handed them out.
"Good." Hotch nodded.
"Any word on Ellie?"
Morgan got up, brushing past JJ as he left the house.
"I didn't-"
"It's not your fault." Fleur assured her before running after Derek.
Morgan was already on the phone,"Garcia?"
"Baby boy, you all good?" Garcia asked.
"Listen, I need you to run something for me." Morgan told her.
"You really had us worried. And by us I mean me. I-I didn't know where you were-"
"Now, Garcia." He cut her off.
"Okay.."
"Alright, I'm looking for an old RV. Partial California plates, Michael-David-3. That's all she was able to get." Morgan read off the information,"The victim thinks it may have been the first three letters of the plate, but she's not sure."
"Yes sir." Garcia typed.
"Alright, call me back on this number as soon as you get a bite." Morgan hung up.
Fleur was standing behind Derek, looking at him. She never saw him act like this.
Morgan turned,"You know, she really needs to be more professional sometimes."
"You know she gets the job done every time." Fleur sighed.
"..I told him, Flo." Morgan shook his head,"I told him that we should wait for backup, but he wouldn't listen to me. We split up and he headed around back before I could stop him."
"Derek, sometimes when it comes to family, common sense and procedure go out the window. You do the best you can."
"This Unsub raped the aunt and then beat her for no reason. She didn't resist, Flo, but he still pistol-whipped her until her ribs were crushed." Morgan told her,"He killed Spicer whole he was on his knees. He was unarmed. This guy's a pure psychopath.. I want this guy."
"We'll get him." Fleur assured him.
"Well, we better do it fast. Taking Ellie was like a game to him. The sick bastard thought it was funny." Morgan spat,"He's gonna get pissed off at her, Flo. She's nothing but a little girl. She's gonna show him fear. And when she does, he's gonna kill her.."
Fleur nodded,"I know.. Come on." She held out her hand.
Morgan looked down, slowly taking her hand and squeezing it.

"Alright, what we have is an UnSub in complete behavioural chaos." Hotch walked into the room.
"Meaning?" Kurzbard asked.
"Serial offenders, especially long term successful ones, don't just suddenly change what they do or how they do it." Rossi began.
"Going after a high-risk target, like a police detective, and then all of a sudden abducting a child is fairly unheard of." Reid continued.
"Fairly?"
"Sometimes they devolve as they know we're getting closer to them and their time's running out." Elijah explained, leaning against the table.
"But this UnSub doesn't appear to be devolving. Devolution generally means loss of control. They find it harder and harder to keep the outside world from noticing them." Morgan spoke.
"If anything, he's becoming more controlled. He spent a lifetime murdering seemingly random victims, then out of nowhere sought out Spicer, recreated his parents murder, lured him into a trap, killed him and took his daughter. The behavioral spectrum is alarmingly different." Reid rambled.
That's when Morgan's phone went off.
"Yeah, Garcia." He answered it.
"Hi. I want to have better news, Mon ami, but there are zero RVs in the state of California with M-D-3 in the order on the plate. I'm sorry." Garcia apologized
"Sorry's not helping anybody. I need results." Morgan hung up,"Garcia's got nothing on the partial plate."
"Maybe Kristin is wrong." Rossi shook his head,"It's not surprising, considering her situation at the time."
"So how the hell are we supposed to find this guy?" Morgan asked.
"We can contact him." Emily walked in.
*********************************
"Kristin remembered in the ambulance that the Unsub listens to the news radio incessantly. He would even stop assaulting her if the broadcaster mentioned anything about the Prince of Darkness." Emily explained.
"Makes sense for a narcissist." Rossi nodded.
"Oh no.." JJ tensed.
"What is it?" Fleur turned around
"The LAPD just put all the information they had out to the press." JJ sighed.
"What do you mean?" Reid blinked.
"A spokesperson at the crime scene was talking about an RV and about Ellie." Elijah recalled.
"So this guy knows exactly what we know." Fleur cursed.
"That might force him to dump the RV." Rossi nodded.
"Or kill-" Reid stopped himself once he saw Morgan looking.
"No, I don't think so." Rossi shook his head.
"Why not, Rossi?" Morgan asked.
"Well, he could've killed you and the sister. He didn't. He kept you alive. He can't be surprised that we know what he's driving and that he has a hostage." Rossi explained.
"But how many news radio stations are there in Los Angeles?" Reid tilted his head.
"I don't know, twenty or so." Morgan shrugged.
"We can't just guess what one he listens to." Fleur shook her head.
"What about the Emergency Alert System?" JJ suggested,"It would be a way to communicate over all the stations simultaneously."
"How would we do that?" Emily walked over.
"I don't really know. How hard could it be to figure out?" JJ aksed as she walked out.
*********************************
"Already?" Reid asked Garcia.
"You doubted?" She raised a brow.
"No, I'll put you on speaker." Reid nodded.
"Okay. Let me preface this by saying that a forty year old murder in a suburb of Los Angeles is an absurdly impossible requet." Garcia began,"Having said that, yours truly happens to know that the Pollock library at Cal State-"
"Garcia." Hotch sighed.
"Yes, sir, sorry. Anyway, this murder was quite the scandal."
"For Southern Califronia in the 60s, that's saying something." Kurzbard commented.
"Okay, I don't know who was talking rught then but.. Word." Garcia nodded before she contiued,"So, Nora Flynn was a prostitute and a drug addict living in a desert community just outside of Los Angeles. It appears bikers were her stock-in-trade, rough bikers, and one fateful day, her and a client were murdered by her thirteen year old son, Billy. Shot to death. The customer, ironically named John, was able to tell the police before he died that Billy made him beg for his life and then shot him anyway."
"That's him."
"Mhm. And he was convicted, but..."
"He's a juvenile." Rossi sighed.
"Right. So, at eighteen, he was released in 1973, never heard from again." Garcia shook her head.
"Oh he was heard from." Emily nodded.
"And he never released a statement as to why he killed them, although it does appear that his childhood was horrific. I'm sending you a picture of him on the day he was released to your PDAs." Garcia finished.
"Make sure you send the files to JJ." Hotch told her.
"Of course, my liege. Garcia bids you-"
"Garcia, wait a minute." Morgan walked forward, taking the phone and walking off.
*********************************
The Agents were stood, waiting, when Emily's phone rang and she quickly answered it.
"Agent Prentiss. Yes, hello doctor.. Yes, sir. Thank you." Emily sighed as she hung up,"Both of Kristin's lungs collapsed. She died a few minutes ago."
"Ellie's got no one now." Morgan sighed.
"Kurzbard." He answered his phone as it rang,"He let her go. He got out of the car and just let her go. She's in a house about six blocks from here."
"Where is he now?" Fleur asked.
"He's in another house, up the street." Kurzbard told her as he walked out.
Once they arrived at the house, the Agents put their vests on as they got out the cars.
"We have SWAT on the way, Kurz." A cop told him.
"And an HPT team." Morgan pointed.
"Yeah, but that'll take a while. We had a phone sent in with a direct line to this one. But so far-" He stopped as the phone rang.
"He's watching us." Hotch told them.
"This is Detective Kurzbard, LAPD." Kurzbard answered the phone before handing it to Morgan,"He wants to talk to you."
Morgan took the phone,"What?" He then hung up and handed it back,"He wants me to go in."
"Morgan." Hotch stopped him.
"I know this guy, Hotch. He didn't kill me before and he won't kill me now."
"No."
"I believe in my original profile. He will not hurt me unless I show him fear."
"Listen-" Hotch tried.
"When you needed us we were there for you. This one is mine." Morgan pointed.
"..You sure?" Hotch asked.
"As I've ever been." Morgan nodded before walking off.
"What is he doing?" Fleur looked up.
"Going inside." Elijah sighed.
"He- Is he stupid?" Fleur blinked,"He can't go in alone."
"Morgan knows what he's doing." Elijah assured her, although he was trying to convince himself as well.
"Elijah.." Fleur looked at him,"I can't lose him."
"You won't, darling." Elijah put a hand on her shoulder,"I promise."
Fleur took his hand, squeezing it.
*********************************
Morgan sighed as he headed inside, looking down at his phone.
"Can we talk?" Fleur asked as she picked up Marie.
"..I knew you were going to ask that." Morgan turned to her.
"I..Are you okay?"
Morgan looked away,"I don't know, Flo.. I don't know."
Fleur sighed,"You had me worried Derek, twice."
"I didn't mean to scare you, Flo." Morgan put his hand on her cheek.
"He could've killed you." Fleur shook her head,"And I'm glad you cared for Ellie, I am. She seems like a great kid, but you need to remember you're not indestructible."
"I know that." Morgan sighed,"But I did what I had to do."
"Do not scare me like that again, d'accord?" She pointed.
"I understand." Morgan chuckled softly.
"Maybe Ellie can come over one day." Fleur hugged him,"Meet Addy."
"I'm sure she'd like that." Morgan held her close.
"You're an ass, Derek Morgan." Fleur sighed.
"But you love me anyway." Morgan kissed her forehead.
"Well, sometimes." She shrugged.
"What do you mean 'sometimes'?"
Fleur hummed,"What was that? I need to feed the kids."
Morgan shook his head and kissed her cheek,"I love you, Flo."
"I love you too." Fleur smiled and ran off.
Morgan chuckled softly as he watched Fleur run off,"That's my girl."
