Chapter 54 - Our Darkest Hour
Elijah and Reid were in their house..Spending time with each other until Elijah's phone went off.
"I.. Am going.. To fight someone." Elijah muttered as he picked up his phone,"What do you want?"
"Woah, hello grumpy." Fleur blinked.
"I was in the middle of something." Elijah rolled his eyes.
"Sorry." Fleur sighed,"Derek was on call to JJ when Strauss came in, she needs us."
"Like right now?"
"Right now. I'm on my way to get you two." Derek told him.
"I'll be ready." Elijah shook his head, hanging up.
"Who is it?" Reid covered himself with the blanket.
"Morgan and Fleur. Strauss needs us." Elijah turned to look at him.
"Like..Now?"
"Now. Morgan's on his way."
Reid looked at the time,"We have about thirteen minutes."
"Better put some clothes on then, pretty boy." Elijah got up.
"Pretty boy." Reid smiled.
"You really like that one, don't you?' He hummed.
"I do."
"Well, if you want me to call you it again, you need to get dressed."
"Fine with me." Reid hummed and got up.
Elijah sighed as he started getting dressed. He just wanted one night, that was it.
"We'll make up for it, hm?" Reid grabbed his jumper.
"Yeah." Elijah nodded slowly.
"Don't worry."
"I'd just like a night with no interruptions or early rises."
"We can only hope." Reid sighed.
"Maybe one day."
"We better feed the cats before we go.
"I'll get on that." Elijah nodded, heading downstairs.

"So what did Strauss want?" Fleur asked as they walked in.
"She needs us in Los Angeles." Hotch turned to face thek
"Home invasion homicide last night. Officers found Gregory Everson, fifty-six, beaten with a GSW to the head. His wife, Colleen was equally beaten and raped repeatedly." JJ explained.
"Repeatedly?" Emily raised a brow.
"That's what she reported." JJ sighed.
"Wait, she survived this?" Elijah looked up from the file.
"He chose to keep her alive." Hotch nodded.
"An intentional witness?"
"Everything but that points to an organised offender. An experienced one." Rossi thought.
"Was she able to identify him?" Reid asked.
"She said he was white, with mean eyes and repulsive breath." JJ read from the file.
"Rotten inside and out." Rossi shook his head,"Did he rape her in front of the husband?"
"Yeah."
"One home invasion rarely warrants Strauss personally sending us out." Morgan crossed his arms.
"There's more." JJ turned,"Ballistics match a double homicide downtown LA, forty-eight miles away."
"Where three days ago, those two women were raped and killed." Hotch pointed to the image of them on the board.
"But last night was in the Suburbs." Fleur looked up.
"They're afraid of another Night Stalker." Morgan sighed.
*********************************
"This guys way to good at this to have just started. He pulled off hours of torture and a homicide without disturbing the neighbours." Morgan sat down, handing everyone their drinks.
"And robbed the house." Rossi added.
"That could be a habit." Hotch shrugged.
"You think he started as a burglar?" JJ tilted her head.
"If it was just about the killing, he wouldn't bother robbing them." Hotch shook his head.
"Wait, how did he get in last night?" Reid asked.
"Mrs Everson said there was a noise outside their door. They were outside of their room a few minutes, when they came back, he was there." JJ explained.
"He distracted them." Emily sighed.
"So he could climb through their bedroom window." Rossi added.
"I'll have Garcia see if that MO was used in any other home invasions." Reid nodded.
"Well, victimology's all over the map. Three murders and he managed to kill men, women, old, young, black, white, hispanic. That's about as random as random as it gets." Emily shrugged.
"Randomness implies a lack of predictability. I think that's the point. All the varying people in his message. He wants them all to dear him." Reid explained.
"And they will. Press got a hold of last night's home invasion." JJ sighed.
"Okay, JJ and I will set up at the station. Dave, you, Deans and Reid go visit Mrs Everson at the hospital. Morgan, Howards and Prentiss, the LAPD Detectives are waiting for you at the Everson house." Hotch informed them.
*********************************
"That's quite a crowd out there." Fleur closed the door as she, Morgan and Emily arrived at the Emerson house.
"Matt Spicer, Adam Kurzbard." Spicer introduced them.
"Hi, Emily Prentiss, This is Derek Morgan and Fleur Howards." Emily nodded.
"Hey, thanks for flying out." Kurzbard shook their hands.
"So, what have you got?" Emily asked.
"We've got our hands full. This guy's been across the city in a week. Seems completely random." Spicer sighed.
"You don't think it is?" Fleur raised a brow.
"We're robbery-homicide in Newton Division. And the first two vics were right in the middle of it." He shook his head,"The only thing that brought us all the way here were the bullets."
"And the assault. All of the victims were raped." Kurzbard added.
"DNA match?" Morgan raised a brow.
"He covers up." He shook his head.
"The Everson were in their bedroom upstairs when the electricity went out." Spicer told them.
"So the UnSub cut the power?" Morgan asked.
"No, they've got rolling blackouts scheduled. Trying to get through this heatwave without the whole city going dark." Kurzbard explained.
"So, is that why he came out here?" Spicer asked.
"Well, people are afraid of the dark. He probably preyed on that." Emily nodded.
"Okay, so the lights go out and this guy starts banging on the door?" Morgan raised a brow.
"Why give them the heads up like that? Why not just break in?" Spicer questioned.
"He probably likes getting their adrenaline going. Makes for a fun fight." Fleur shrugged.
"It sounds like he got one. The wife's all shook up. I don't think she's gonna be much help." Spicer shook his head.
*********************************
Meanwhile over at the hospital, Elijah, Reid and Rossi arrived at Mrs Emerson's room, however her wrists were in restraints.
"Why is she in restraints?" Reid asked quietly.
"She tried to kill herself.. Twice." Rossi sighed.
Elijah sighed, shaking his head as they walked into her room,"Mrs Everson, we're with the FBI."
"We know you talked to the detectives this morning, but if you're up for a few more questions, it could help." Rossi leaned down.
"Why didn't he kill.. Me?" She asked, looking up at them.
Reid licked his lips,"It wasn't about you. This man only thinks about power and control."
"Leaving you behind gives him that.." Elijah tapped his finger on the side of her bed,"Now, did he ever speak to you directly?"
Mrs Everson whimpered,"No..I'm sorry."
"It's okay, take your time." Elijah nodded.
"Greg looked at me like he always did. I.. We didn't need words. He..He just looked at me and we would know. I tried to be strong but I.." She began to cry,"I shut my eyes when the gun went off. And thats the last thing Greg saw. Now everytime I shut my eyes I see him. How long will that last?"
The Agents looked at each other, it was a question they couldn't answer.
"You rest now." Rossi nodded slowly.
Mrs Everson whimpered again, closing her eyes.
*********************************
"Forcing a child to witness this is clearly sadistic. He destroyed the boys innocence and took away his childhood." Hotch began with the profile,"This likely mirrors the Unsub's own experience."
"That's an excuse for what he's doing?" A cop asked.
"There's no excuse for what he's doing." Hotch shook his head.
"We're not justifying anything. Everything he says, everything he does, tells us what makes him tick. That's all." Rossi assured them.
"The message that he left us was misspelled, which says that he was not well educated." Emily pointed.
"Why'd he leave one now?" Kurzbard questioned.
"That, we don't know. Yet." She nodded.
"Just because his recent attacks are in Los Angeles doesn't mean he's from here." Fleur added.
"Killing in the dark is a must for him. We believe that's why he's come to Los Angeles. That and his willingness to kill random people tells us that he's an opportunistic offender, and these types are incredibly difficult to predict." Reid explained.
"And as you all know, the rolling blackouts have been announced, so residents can prepare for the few hours they'll be in the darkness. Unfortunately, that also tells the killer whose windows will be opened, whose alarms will be disarmed." JJ sighed.
"The dark is his signature. it's a habit, and we'll find that he's always killed this way." Elijah contiued.
"Cause he's a coward." A cop scoffed.
"To some degree, yes. He also has intimacy issues. He turns photographs away from himself." He nodded.
"It's unlikely that a man like this has been in any kind of relationship." Emily shook her head.
"There's also a good chance that he has some sort of short-coming, whether real or perceived, he's obviously self-concious about something." Reid suggested.
"Like what?" Kurzbard raised a brow.
"It could be a physical deformity. It might be something really small to us, but it means everything to him." He added.
"People just want to fit in." Rossi nodded.
"Having one thing that sets him apart from the norm could be what lead him to the extreme solitude of a violent schizoid personality." Reid crossed his arms.
"He takes his victims power away, literally and figuratively. And he feeds off of making them powerless." Fleur explained.
"We had rolling blackouts all last summer. And this guy wasn't around." Kurzbard pointed.
Well, he is now. And based on the vicious nature of the crimes, the press have named him the Prince of Darkness." JJ sighed.
"Prince? That'll fuel his ego." Elijah scoffed.
"Yeah, he's gonna be all over the news."
"Once we unravel his need for darkness, well find him." Hotch nodded.
*********************************
"How's the boy?" Hotch asked as Morgan and Spicer arrived.
"He's quiet." Morgan nodded.
"Too soon for an interview?" Hotch questioned.
"Yeah, I wanna find this guy before we have to put the kid through it." Spicer told him.
"Guys, Garcia has something." Fleur ran through, placing the computer down.
"Okay, everyone needs to sit down because I'm about to rock your world, and not in the way I like to do it. I have scoured and searched and you were totally right." Garcia began,"This Unsub has been doing it forever. There is nowhere he hasn't been in the last twenty-six yesrs. Honestly, every single state. Well, forty-eight continental. My point, he is the worst I've ever seen, and we have all seen some things."
"How did you connect him?" Hotch asked.
"Everything you said. He's drawn to the dark. He shows up during a blackout, he robs, he kills, he leaves a witness." She sighed.
"How's he getting away with this?" Kurzbard shook his head.
"He never hits the same city twice."
"Except Los Angeles." Morgan tilted his head.
"I'm sending everything your way and you better load up that printer cause it looks like he started in Southern California way back in the summer of 1984." Garcia shook her head.
"Thank god the press hasn't connected this." JJ cursed.
"Summer Olympics were in Los Angeles that year." Morgan nodded.
"So was Richard Ramirez. That's the year he started." Kurzbard added.
"Only he never left. He stayed in LA for a few years." Reid pointed.
"It appears our UnSub started that summer during a blackout in San Diego. From there he went to Orange County after that he ended up in Los Angeles and then worked his way up the coast." Garcia typed.
"Why did he come back?" Elijah asked.
"And why now?" Morgan sighed.
*********************************
"Well, the media coverage actually helped. Neighbors were hyper-vigilant. As soon as they heard gunfire, they called the police." JJ told them.
"Did he leave a message this time?" Fleur asked.
"Bastard left a baby in the closet." Kurzbard shook his head.
"There's got to be some kind of message in that." Emily sighed.
"He's taunting us. He's leaving witnesses that are to little to help." Spicer put his hands in his pockets.
"Okay." Emily got up from her seat to the board of victims,"Why them? Why now? He killed these two women before the rolling blackouts. What is it about them? He killed them in a busy, well-lit area. That's nothing like the others."
"It's Shootin' Newton. People hear gunfire down there all the time. Probably fit right in." Kurzbard shook his head.
"It was in your division." Fleur mentioned.
"Hey, he had to start somewhere." Spicer shrugged.
"So you think it's just a coincidence?"
"Alright, let's says it's not. What does that mean? He wanted our attention?" He questioned.
"Well he certainly has it." Kurzbard nodded.
"You're sure you've never worked anything like this before?" Morgan asked.
"Trust me. This guy makes an impression."
"He started his career twenty-six years ago." Hotch pointed.
"Same as me." He realised,"..You think this is because of me? That all of these people are dead because of that?"
"Two women killed in your division, no survivors. Then a couple, leaving the wife as a witness. Then a mother, leaving the son. Now two parents, but a baby survives." Hotch sighed.
"If it's some kind of pattern, I've never seen it before." Kurzbard shook his head.
"He circled back to LA for a reason."
"The first two murders here in LA County were close by. Long Beach is on the cusp of LA and Orange County." Reid told them.
"Let's look into that one." Hotch nodded.
"Home invasion. The husband was shot, wife was left alive." Reid read the file.
"Sounds familiar." Elijah hummed.
"Next one?" Hotch asked.
"After Long Beach, he went to Santa Monica." Morgan looked at the file,"Wait a minute. Spicer? Do you have family out there?"
"Yeah, that's where I grew up." Spicer nodded.
"Home invasion robbery, double homicide. Joe and Sylvia Spicer were killed." He read out.
"Those are my parents.. That doesn't make any sense. Let me see that."
Morgan nodded, handing Spicer the file.
"They died in a car accident. A drunk driver." Spicer shook his head.
"Who told you that?" Elijah raised a brow.
"My grandparents. I remember my grandfather waking me up. I was sick the night they died, I had a fever. How would I not remember that happening to them?"
"Maybe your grandparents never told you, Matt. They were trying to protect you." Kurzbard told him.
"They lied?"
"You were the first child he left alive." Hotch nodded.
"You've been all over the news." Fleur realised.
"This guy knows who you are." Morgan crossed his arms.
Spicer hesitated before he left the room.
*********************************
"Reid, we're stuck in traffic. The lights are out." Emily spoke over the phone.
"Yeah, it's out here too. Pretty sure it's city wide." Reid sighed.
"That's Morgan on the other line. We're gonna meet him at Kristin's house." She told them.
"Let's get over there." Kurzbard walked off.
"With a population of eight million people, it's only a matter of time before the cell phone reception goes-" Reid stopped as his phone cut off.
Elijah sighed,"I've got a bad feeling about this.."
