Chapter 5 - The Fox
"Has anyone heard from Hotch?" Fleur sat down in her chair.
"Not as of recently." Elijah sat on Reid's desk, a cup of coffee in his hand.
"Clean." Reid held up his hand sanitizer.
"Clean." Elijah sighed, holding put his hand.
"Thank you." Reid put the sanitiser on him.
"I think Haley went into labour." Morgan shrugged.
"Oh, that's great." JJ smiled.
"Oh I can't wait to see the baby." Fleur clapped.
"I can." Elijah sighed.
"You don't like kids?" Garcia gasped.
"You guys do?" Elijah raised a brow.
"They're so cute! Just like puppies and kittens and-" Garcia rambled.
"Right- Right." Elijah shook his head,"Look, I just don't see the appeal."
"I don't like them either." Elle chuckled.
"Couldn't agree more." Elijah looked like he was going to say more but he stopped himself.
"Elle." Fleur spoke through a cough.
"Mhm." Elijah nodded quickly.
"What? Did I say something?" Elle blinked.
"No, it's just an Elijah thing." Morgan assured her.
That's when they heard a knock at the office door, Hotch and Haley at the door with baby Jack in their arms.
"Oh... Lovely." Elijah nodded slowly.
"Let me see!" Fleur squealed and got up,"Oh my goodness, you guys he's adorable."
"Thank you." Hayley smiled.
"If you find baldness and wrinkles attractive." Elijah rolled his eyes.
"Oh, look at his itty bitty nose." Garcia slapped Elijah's chest.
"Don't you want one of those?" Fleur turned to Morgan.
"I think I'll just stick to practicing." Morgan smirked.
Fleur made a face to say, 'As if' before looking at Elijah who was making the same face.
"Fucking virgin." Elijah coughed.
"Congratulations." Elle walked over with a smile.
"Thanks." Hotch nodded fo her,"She's amazing, I'm a little terrified."
"We better be going." Haley took Jack from Hotch.
"It was a pleasure seeing you, Mrs Hotchner." Reid nodded to her.
"Bye Hayley." Elijah waved.
"Bye." Everyone waved and walked off.
"We got a case." Elle sighed.
"What case.. Elle?" Elijah asked her.
"Come on." Elle nodded to the Conference Room.
The group looked between each other before making their way to the conference room.
"Crawford family, murdered three days ago in their home." Gideon showed the photos.
"I saw it on the news." Morgan nodded.
"They were found in the basement of their house." Gideon sighed.
"Bags packed for a vacation they never took." JJ added.
"Reporter said it was a murder-suicide? The father stabbed them all and then shot himself?" Morgan raised a brow.
"That's the conclusion Maryland State Police came to." JJ nodded,"The gun was found next to the father, he had gunpowder residue on his right hand."
"And now you've got some compelling reason to think that Chris Crawford didn't kill his family?" Elijah leaned back in his chair.
"Yeah. Another murdered family, the Millers, found a month ago. The mother, Reese Miller, her two children and husband. Again, they were found in the basement. And like the Crawfords, their suitcases were packed for vacation." JJ sat down.
"In both cases, the bodies were discovered five days after their vacations were supposed to have started." Gideon studied the file.
"Yet the coroner determined that they had only been dead twenty four hours." Fleur put the file down.
"So for four days, both families remained in the house." Reid nodded.
"Location of the bodies in both cases, basement. That indicates a level of organisation." Hotch explained.
"With a quick but disorganized application of overwhelming force." Morgan looked at a picture.
"If these aren't murder suicides then someone's doing a pretty good job of making them look like it." Reid sighed.
"Possibly this man, Eric Miller." JJ showed them a picture,"He's the biological father of the Miller children. Arlington PD issued a BOLO for Miller after the bodies were discovered."
"Ex-wife Reese Miller had a restraining order against him for domestic violence." Morgan shook his head.
"When did she get remarried?" Gideon asked.
"The week before they were killed." JJ answered.
"Violent husbands believe their wives and children are property." Elijah shook his head,"Reese Miller getting remarried may have caused him to snap."
"Well, Virginian cops finally located Eric Miller last night responding to a drunken disturbance at a motel, where Miller had been hiding out. When they found him, they discovered blood on his black leather jacket. It belonged to his children." Fleur sighed.
"Was any of his DNA found at the Crawford house?" Elijah asked.
"No." Gideon answered.
"Did he know the Crawfords?" Reid turned.
"If he does, he's not saying. In fact, he hasn't said a word since his arrest." JJ shook her head,"The Arlington PD have asked us to interview him."
"If anyone could apply overwelming force, he's your man." Fleur pointed.
"I want you to find out, talk to him." Gideon nodded to her.
"Me?" Fleur put the file down.
"You've done interviews before with other agents taking point. You can go solo." Gideon told her.
Fleur nodded slowly,"If you say so."

Hotch and Elijah were in an office, looking through the evidence while they listened to the medical report.
"Where's his wedding ring?" Hocth asked.
"It's not listed in his personal effects." Elijah shook his head as he looked through the files.
"He obviously wore one, so where is it?" Hotch held up a picture.
"It's not like it just walked off." Elijah sighed.
"Maybe Fleur can get something out of him." Hotch nodded as they walked to the glass window that looked in on the interviews.
"I'm Agent Fleur Howards from the FBI, I'd like to ask you a few questions, do you mind?" Fleur closed the door.
"You got something to ask me, girl?" Eric looked up at her,"You look me in the eye and you ask."
Fleur looked down, placing the files on the desk,"Three days ago-"
"You're not looking at me." Eric interrupted her.
Fleur looked up at Eric,"Three days ago, the Crawford family was murdered."
"Is that right?"
"Did you know them?"
"What're you getting at?" Eric raised a brow.
"They were killed in the exact same way that your family was killed." Fleur pointed as she opened the file.
"And? I've been slapped around all night by every cop in Virginia. Now what makes you think a dammed photo is gonna scare me?" Eric scoffed.
Fleur looked down at the photo, moving her hand forward slightly. That's when Erica slammed his hands down on the table. Fleur jumped back, pulling her hands back.
"Is that what this is about? Hm? You think I'm crazy, girl. You think I suddenly snapped and slaughtered my own wife and kids? You think I did this, huh? Is that what you think?!" Eric yelled, slamming his hands down again.
Fleur stood up, her doe like eyes slowly going back to her normal self. Her ruse ending as Hotch and Elijah walked in and the guards restrained Eric.
"Mr Miller, sit down. Now." Elijah ordered, trying to imitate Hotch.
Eric scoffed, shaking his head,"Who's this?! Your daddy and brother? I'm done talking to you people!"
"You don't have to talk, just listen." Elijah cleared his throat,"On the occasions you assaulted your wife, you were intoxicated. Once the effects had worn off you were overcome with feelings of remorse."
"I'm gonna tell you this one time, you shut your mouth!" Eric warned.
"Genetic factors contribute to alcohol-stress interactions. Your mother was an alcoholic and she was often too drunk to stop the beatings that your father gave you." Elijah rambled, fidgeting with his hands.
"I think we should stop this." Hotch sighed.
"Oh, he's not done." Fleur crossed her arms.
"At age six, you were orphaned to a family where the abuse continued only... This time it was sexual." Elijah continued.
"You shut your mouth or I'm going to rip your face off." Eric spat.
"The abuse continued well into puberty. My one concern is, Eric, did you or did you not continue the cycle with your own children?" Elijah crossed his arms.
"I never laid a hand on my children, you hear me?"
Elijah made eye contact with Eric,"I hear you."
"I found them like that... Dead. Bloodied. My babies... My sweet babies." Eric cried as the officers slowly released him, letting him sit again,"I was crazy out of my mind, I didn't know what to do, and I knew the cops were going to blame me, and they have."
"So you ran?" Fleur moved forward.
Eric looked down before looking back up at the two of them,"So what have I got now?"
"You've got your innocence." Elijah told him,"For the sake of your children I believe, at the very least, they deserve the truth."
"I can't get the image of my dead children out of my mind. Ty, my little boy... He was clutching this piece of paper. I think it was a drawing, maybe a painting. Please... I would love to know what he was painting, Agent Howards." Eric nodded to Fleur then Elijah.
"Speak to me a little nicer next time and... I'll think about it." Fleur sighed and walked out.
Elijah followed after her, letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding.
"I've never seen you act like that before." Fleur closed the door.
"Act like what?" He turned to her.
"All Mr Tough Guy." Fleur chuckled.
"I was trying to act like Hotch. Y'know, so he'd maybe listen to me." Elijah began chewing on his nails.
"Nails." Fleur grabbed his hands.
"Sorry- That was just a very stressful experience." Elijah sighed.
"It was an interesting interview technique. What were you hoping to accomplish?" Hotch raised a brow as he turned to them.
"Miller was closed off, defensive, hostile. We needed a way in. He suffered a breakdown but I don't think he killed his family and I know he loves his wife." Fleur explained.
"What makes you say that?" Hotch asked.
"Even though they were divorced, he still wore his wedding ring." Elijah crossed his arms.
*********************************
"Heard you took control, kid." Morgan hummed.
"I wouldn't go that far." Elijah shook his head.
"You and Fleur got good." Morgan nodded.
"I just pretended to be Hotch, seemed to work alright." Elijah shrugged.
"He acted very manly." Fleur walked up.
"It took so much effort to just- Not leave the room when he was threatening to rip my face off."
"You did great." Fleur smiled.
"Thanks, Fleur." Elijah hummed,"I'm just glad be didn't call me your boyfriend."
"That wouldn't be a bad thing." Fleur laughed.
"It would be a horrible thing." Elijah nudged her,"Having to put up with you all day?"
"I'm not bad." Fleur gasped.
"Trust me, darling. A relationship between us would not work." Elijah patted her shoulder.
Fleur chuckled as they all sat down.
"I believe this Unsub had control over this family. He may have separated each family member, he tells the mother 'If you scream, I'll kill your children'. He tells the children, 'If you cry, I'll kill mommy.' The suspect found a way of restraining them without leaving marks." Gideon began
"Based on lividity, the ME determines that the father was the last to die." Elijah shook his head.
"Which means he witnessed the whole event." Morgan sighed,"If he did spend time with both families, he must have known he had the time to spend with them."
"Becayse he knew they were going on vacation." Reid nodded
"Look at travel agents, relatives, work colleagues, contracr workers, children's tutors." Gideon listed as the phone pinged.
"Gideon, we've been looking into the Crawford Financials." Hotch told him.
"Alison Crawford spent way more than Chris could afford, they were in major debt." Garcia explained.
"And Chris Crawford wrote a number of cheques for a series of visits to a therapist.' Hotch informed them.
"She had two cellphone accounts. One of them billed to a separate address in Southwest Washington DC." Garcia added.
"Did you get that?" Hotch asked.
*********************************
"Okay, both families had a dog and both houses had a dog door." Elijah pointed at the board.
"Fielding said the person that he saw was small." Fleur looked up.
"Yeah, well, in order to get through that door you'd have to be 5'4 tops." Morgan told her,"And real thin."
"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Gideon quoted.
"Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character. Whoever did this, isn't." Morgan crossed his arms,"We can be pretty sure he's found himself another family by now."
The next day,, Elijah spun in his chair, still looking through the files with Fleur, Elle, Reid and Hotch nearby.
"You're going to get dizzy." Elle turned.
"No, I won't." Elijah continued spinning.
"Elijah." Fleur sighed.
Elijah sighed and out his feet down, stopping the chair,"I like doing it."
"You'll get ill, and get headaches."
"How else am I supposed to focus?" Elijah sat his files down.
"Well, Gideon has been staring at that all morning." Elle pointed.
"I don't know how he does it." Elijah shook his head as he stood up.
"Well I hope he sees a connection because I've checked doctors, lawyers, travel agents, tutors, contract workers... I got nothing." Morgan sighed.
"Why target those families?" Elle asked.
"Well to know that, we'd have to know how." Fleur put the file down.
"Alright, we know organized serial killers are often skilled workers with above average intelligence." Morgan sighed as he stood up,"A high birth status and in most cases, male."
"In the workplace, he's socially confident. And with woman, sexually competent. Every offence is preplanned. Targeting the victim is almost as pleasurable as the actual kill." Fleur added.
"These guys, they're meticulous. Its compulsion. Everything has to have a proper place." Elijah sighed.
"They do exhaustive amount of research on their victims. They watch their every move, every last detail is observed." Morgan carried on.
"Everything needs to be written down neatly in a book or maybe even a journal." Elijah nodded,"Like when the kids are coming home from school, when daddy gets home. Playtime, supper time, bathtime, bedtime."
"Plan the work, work the plan. This is the way he maintains control. It's also how he personalises the target so nothing's left to chance and absolutely nothing is left out of place, ever... So he plans the work and when he's good and ready he works the plan." Fleur sighed.
"He takes great pride in his job." Elijah shook his head,"I think the workplace has to be the connection."
Gideon then walked out with the drawings of houses,"Both are by Emily, months apart. This one full of colour and life. The one I found at Emily's house has lines, dimensions and no colour. I believe Emily was coerced to draw this. It's a point of view, his point of view. This is where the killer stood and just watched the family."
"Each of the dead husbands was missing his wedding ring, this is the Unsub's trophy." Hotch held his up.
"He targets families because he lost his own and for a few days, he gets to play daddy." Elijah leaned back in his chair.
"And he can do whatever he wants because no ones going to come looking because they're supposed to be on vacation." Fleur hummed.
"Let's get forensics to check the inside of Chris Crawford's clothing. The Unsub may have worn the father's clothes too, to complete the fantasy." Gideon instructed.
"So why kill them?" Elle asked.
"Because the fantasy can't last forever, dear." Elijah shook his head.
"Do we know anything that actually helps us identify this bastard?" Elle turned.
"Wait a minute." Morgan sat up and looked at the file again,"Chris Crawford worked for the IRS and Reese Miller was a secretary at the GAO."
"That makes them both government employees." Everyone got up.
"Let's check out Chris Crawford and Reese Miller." Morgan nodded.
*********************************
"We got three adults, two children, sitting at the dining room table." Morgan looked at the room.
The SWAT captain then signaled them and everyone began to approach the house, weapons raised.
Everyone then ran in, guns pointed,"FBI!"
"He's got my baby!" The mother cried, grabbing her daughter.
"Ma'am, is he alone?" Morgan turned
"Yes, he is!"
"Where's the basement?" Fleur ran in.
"Under the stairs!" She pointed.
"I'm going down, someone cover me." Fleur went to the basement.
"Already on it." Elijah followed her.
"Karl? Karl, it's the FBI. Karl..." Fleur flashed her light at him.
Karl slowly looked at them as he cradled the baby.
"Karl?" Elijah raised a brow, although Karl shushed him.
"Why don't you give me the baby?" Fleur moved forward as Karl took his hand off the baby's mouth and the baby began crying,"Karl, look at me. I'm gonna put my gun away, and I want you to hand me the baby."
Karl slowly began to approach them, the crying baby in his hands. All of a sudden his expression changed and he threw the baby at Fleur.
"Knife!" Elijah shouted.
Fleur quickly caught the baby, holding him to her chest. Karl then sliced Elijah's arm as he fought back. Elijah managed to overpower Karl, slamming him against the wall as held his neck.
"You move, and I will break your neck." Elijah glared down at him.
Gideon came down, quickly cuffing Karl and taking him from Elijah,"Good job, kid."
"That time I was pretending to be Morgan." Elijah turned to Fleur, holding his arm.
Fleur gently cradled the baby in her arms,"My hero." She joked.
"I better be, I got sliced for this." Elijah pointed.
"Go to medics, I got him." Fleur assured him.
"Trust me, I'm going." Elijah shook his head as he climbed back up the stairs.
"You're okay baby." Fleur smiled down at the baby and following Elijah up the stairs.
"We got the kid." Elijah called to the others.
"Thank god." Morgan sighed.
"Do you know where the medic is? I'm asking for a friend." Elijah asked him.
"Jesus- Medic?" Reid quickly called once he saw Elijah's arm.
"It's not that bad, relax." Elijah shook his head.
"You're bleeding."
"And?"
"Come on." Reid nodded for him to go to the ambulance.
"I'm coming." Elijah sighed.
