Chapter 47 - Haunted

Morgan was pacing in Fleur's apartment, he was worried and wanted to get to work as soon as possible. Fleur rubbed her face as she walked into the living room.

"Flo- Are you ready?" Morgan turned to her.

"I'm just grabbing some lunch."

"Right. Right." Morgan nodded, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Breathe cherié.. Breathe." Fleur sighed and walked over.

Morgan shook his head,"I'm just worried about Hotch."

"I know, but he passed all the assessments."

"I just want to help him, y'know?"

"I understand." Fleur kissed his head.

Morgan sighed and held Fleur's cheek,"I love you so much."

"I love you too, just calm down." She hummed.

"I'll try my best." Morgan chuckled softly.

"Do you want tea to help?"

"Please?"

"Coming right up." Fleur nodded.

"What would I do without you?" Morgan smiled.

"Be very very unhappy."

"That's true." Morgan kissed her cheek.

"Okay, tea then we can go."

"Right, lead the way."

Fleur hummed and walked to the kitchen.

"Thanks." Reid winced as he sat down.

"Does it hurt?" Garcia asked.

"It really only hurts when I think about it, which is pretty much all the time." Reid told her before reaching for a box of cookies.

"No, no, no. Get away you." Garcia pointed,"These are for Hotch."

"I got shot in the leg and I don't get any cookies?" Reid crossed his arms,"You know he's going to hate the attention."

"Is my cooking not good enough then?" Elijah asked from the doorway.

"Your cooking is delicious. Don't worry." Reid assured Elijah.

"It's cookies, not cake."

"He's probably going to pretend like nothing happened anyway." Reid took a lollipop.

"Well that doesn't mean we have to." Garcia hummed.

"I think maybe we should."

"I don't roll that way." Garcia pouted.

"And that's why we love you." Elijah hummed,"But I've been thinking about something.. The entire time I've known Hotch, I don't think I've ever seen him blink."

"I know.. It's weird." Garcia sighed.

"Classic alpha male behavior." Reid nodded.

"Do you think he stared down Foyet?"

"Maybe. It could be what saved his life."

"Do you think he stared the whole time? Like, with each stab?" Garcia made a stabbing motion.

"I have no idea." Reid shook his head.

"Is he okay?"

"I wouldn't be." Elijah sighed,"But I'm a blinker."

"Guys, there you are. Grab your go bags." JJ walked into the room.

"What's going on?" Reid asked.

"Turn on the news."

"Which one?" Garcia rolled over to her screens.

"It doesn't matter." She sighed.

Garcia nodded and put on the first news station she could. It was reporting on an attack at a pharmacy in Louisville.

"We're going to Louisville." JJ hummed, walking out.

Reid waved at Garcia, lollipop in his mouth as he got his crutches.

"And you're sure you can do this case?" Elijah asked.

"I'll be okay." Reid nodded, holding his arm up.

"I'm just double-checking."

"Help please?" He hummed.

"Helping." Elijah pulled him to his feet.

"Thank you, sir. Bye Garcia." Reid waved.

*********************************

"So, our point person in Louisville is Luietenent Kevin Mitchell." JJ told them as they sat on the plane.

That's when the door to the plane opened, Hotch and Emily walking in.

"Morning." Hotch nodded to them.

"Good to see you." Rossi sighed.

"You too."

"You look well, sir." Garcia hummed from the computer.

"Thank you." Hotch sat down before looking at Reid's leg brace,"How long do you have that?"

"I'm not really sure.. But welcome back." Reid answered.

"Thank you." Hotch nodded,"Any other attacks?"

"Um, no. Not yet." JJ shook her head.

"Call's proven hard to track. He's never had a driver's license so he's most likely still on foot." Reid told him.

"Or public transportation." Fleur shrugged.

"He's not going to take the bus. His face is everywhere." Emily shook her head.

"Have we found a stressor?" Hotch asked.

"He just lost his job. He's worked in a factory since 1990. He made appliances since forever and not a single promotion." Garcia informed them.

"That's a long time to be bitter." Morgan shrugged.

"Or he doesn't care." Elijah added.

"No, not if he has a family to feed." JJ shook her head.

"Actually, he's of the hermit variety. As far as I can tell, he's got no one. No wife, no kids." Garcia told her.

"Nothing to live for." Fleur sighed.

"So, why hasn't he killed himself yet?" Hotch asked,"Sprees usually end in suicide. If he's got nothing to live for, why hasn't he ended it?"

"Because he isn't finished yet. We know he has displaced anger and took it out on the first victim." Reid answered.

"The stock boy represents someone. We need to figure out who." Hotch nodded,"Was he military?"

"Negative." Garcia shook her head.

"Well, this guys lashing out for a reason. He has anger, endless targets and a gun, and he's just getting started." Hotch sighed.

*********************************

"Alright, we've got checkpoints at the state line." Liutenent Mitchell put a small map on the board,"On both I-64 and I-65 and within a twenty mile radius of downtown. We think he's still on foot."

"Its been just under three hours, with an average walking speed of 2.5 miles per hour, that rounds up to an approximate eight mile radius." Reid explained.

"Now, we've concentrated here. The first responders started a hard target search of businesses and residences within that eight miles. You're going to join them. You know what he looks like. Go find him." Mitchell ordered.

With that, the cops all began leaving the room.

"We dug up all we could on Darrin Call. Even went to his apartment, we couldn't find much." He sighed.

"We've got Agents there now. Don't worry, we'll fill it in." JJ assured him.

"What's your strategy?"

"We try to figure out where he's headed next." Elijah answered.

"Ha! You got a crystal ball?"

"Most spree killers are outwardly aggressive. We've studied Call's behavior and he's defensive." Reid ignored Mitchell's comment.

"The first victim, the stock boy." JJ showed the video of the stock boy being stabbed.

"Why, there's nothing defensive about that." Mitchell crossed his arms.

"Actually, there is. Call doesn't react until he gets touched."

"And that's what set him off?" He turned.

"Happens every time. Contact, then stab. Contact, stab." Elijah hummed as the video played.

"So you're saying he didn't mean to hurt these people?" Mitchell asked.

"He didn't go in there with a weapon." Reid nodded.

"Well, now he's got two. I just put his face all over the news." Mitchell shrugged,"People are going to stop him themselves."

"How soon can we have a press conference?" JJ raised a brow.

"The camera crews are out front."

"Okay. Let me call Hotch." JJ grabbed her phone as she went to leave.

"Who's that?"

"Our supervisor. He's already at the crime scene." Reid told him.

"What is it about this kid?" Mitchell sighed.

"That's what we need to figure out." Elijah shook his head.

*********************************

"Mr Call was always so quiet. He's been coming here for years." The pharmacist sighed.

"Had he ever had a run-in with the stock boy?" Morgan asked her.

"John was new here, I waved him over. I didn't know what else to do. No one else was helping." She shook her head.

"He didn't turn violent until you gave him his prescription." Morgan pointed.

"Well, it wasn't his."

"You handed him a bag." Fleur crossed her arms.

"It was somebody else's." She sighed again,"I just wanted him to calm down."

"JJs press conference is in five minutes." Hotch spoke as he walked over.

"Hotch, we might have something else here." Morgan told him,"Why didn't you give him his own medication?"

"Well, he didn't have any refills left."

"For what?" Hotch asked.

"Uh.. Alprazolam. But he used to he on Phiothizene." She recalled.

"He was on an anti-psychotic?" Hotch blinked.

"Well, that's why I wanted him to calm down."

"You said used to be. How long has he been off them?" Morgan questioned.

"At least a month."

"And when were you going to tell us this?" Fleur blinked,"He's armed and delusional, who's his doctor?"

"Uh.. I don't remember. My computer.. I'm sorry." She looked at her broken computer.

"Great." Hotch scoffed, walking off.

"Excuse us. Hotch." Morgan followed him.

"Call JJ and tell her about the meds." Hotch pointed.

"This isn't her fault." Fleur sighed.

"Howards, he's in a psychotic break. This changes everything." Hotch shook his head.

"Do you want to talk about this?" Morgan asked.

"No, I want to find him." Hotch walked off, on the phone,"Garcia, he's been off his anti-psychotic for a month. What else did you miss?"

"He needs to talk about this." Fleur turned to Morgan once Hotch was out of earshot.

"I know, but he's not going to." Morgan rubbed the back of his neck.

"We better go after him." Fleur sighed.

"Before he does anything rash." Morgan nodded.

*********************************

"May first, 1975, a six year old Darrin Call was found roaming the middle of nowhere. He was picked up and was in state care for the first few months." Garcia spoke.

"Was he abandoned?" Morgan asked.

"Did he tell the cops?" JJ asked.

"No. Because he didn't talk. Not for over a year. And once he started talking, he only knew his life as Darrin Call." Garcia sighed.

"Thats awful." JJ shook her head.

"So is this. Our little Darrin was never claimed."

"Maybe he wasn't from the area." Elijah suggested,"There wasn't a thriving missing children's network in 1975."

That's when everyone arrived at the police station, Emily speaking.

"Call is wearing Cipola's clothing."

"You think he's lucid?" Reid raised a brow.

"No, most likely he's just freaked out."

"Either way, we should update the publuc." Morgan crossed his arms.

"You should be there too." JJ nodded to Mitchell.

Mitchell nodded slowly before pointing to the writing on the whiteboard,"What is this?"

"Calls timeline." JJ answered.

"He left Louisville?"

"Three times. Always came back, to the same ten block radius."

"Why?" Mitchell asked.

"Victims are often drawn to the scene of their first trauma. Part of him wanted to escape, the other part probably struggled to find answers." Elijah explained.

"Was he hospitalised?" Hotch raised a brow.

"Uh, 1985, for two years." JJ nodded.

"Yeah and again in '95 for a few months. Both at the state facility in Fayette County." Garcia hummed.

"You know he doesn't drive. You think he'd walk all the way out there?" Mitchell questioned.

"He's desperate. He'll find a way." Fleur shrugged.

"Then I'll tell the Sheriff in Fayette." Mitchell walked off.

"When did he start the prescriptions, Garcia?" Hotch asked.

"In 1977, and it looks like he's tried them all. I've got a list. Alphabetically? Alprazolam, clorazopam, diazepam-"

"Just send it." He cut her off.

"Yes, sir." Garcia hung up.

"His doctor weaned him off of the prescription for a reason. Now that's a big risk, so the reward must have been greater." Morgan nodded.

"He needs the truth." Emily realized.

"He took his file. He got some answers." Fleur shrugged.

"And a headstart." Reid added.

"Well, we need to catch up." Hotch crossed his arms.

*********************************

"Was there a suspect list?" JJ looked over Reid's shoulder.

"It's in here somewhere." Mitchell sighed.

"Listen to this. He was known as the Hollow Creek Killer. Three bodies were found, some never identified." Reid told them.

"Oh god, he used lime to dispose.." Fleur read the note but stopped herself.

"Oh, there's a survivor." Elijah pointed.

"Call?"

"No, a twelve year old boy named Tommy Phillips. Parents said he'd been missing for two weeks and came back a different kid." Elijah sighed as he read from the computer.

"Of course he did." Rossi shook his head.

"Let's see, the family left Louisville after Tommy told police where to find the bodies. He also said the suspect was a white male in his thirties and drove a red pickup truck." Reid looked up from the screen.

"We need to find Tommy." Hotch took out his phone.

"He'd be 46 now. His parents probably changed his name and got as far away as possible." Rossi told him.

"Garcia can find him."

"Dont get your hopes up."

"Garcia, everything you can find on a Tommy Phillips." Hotch spoke to Garcia on the phone.

"The victims had cuts." Reid looked at the file.

"The stock boy's blade is what set him off at the pharmacy. If this is what Call's been running from, it's no wonder he's blocked it out." JJ sighed.

"Because he's clean now. There's no medication to block his memories and he wants answers. Where would he go?" Elijah crossed his arms.

"To what he knows." Fleur realised.

"He doesn't know anything. That's the problem." Mitchell put his hands on his hips.

"He's beginning to. 1975, Sterner Orphanage. That's where he became Darrin Call." Fleur pointed.

*********************************

The team soon ended up at the home of Darrin's father.. The Hollow Creek Killer. The SWAT team was ready and there were snipers on the nearby roof.

"Lieutenant?" Emily asked.

"The kid's in there, we've got this. Tactical teams are covering the exits." Mitchell pointed.

"Call needs a distraction." Emily nodded.

"He's focused on the old man." He shrugged.

"Well, for now. But we're going to have to figure out the safest way to get the kid out."

"I've got a team in the back and one on the way. We're gonna infiltrate." Mitchell told her.

"You do that and someone else dies."

"Either Call or a child murderer. Flip a coin." Mitchell shrugged.

"It doesn't have to end like that." Emily shook her head as Hotch walked past,"We get a confession out of Jarvis and he goes away and Call gets his answers. No one has to die. Hotch- Hotch!"

"What the hell is he doing?" Morgan tried to run forward as Hotch headed into the house.

"No, let him go." Rossi put his hand out.

"Rossi, I'm not letting him go in there solo." Morgan shook his head.

"We have to trust him." Fleur bit her cheek.

With that, Hotch was inside the house. They couldn't see what was happening, what he was doing.

"What is he doing?" Morgan shook his head.

"Stalling." Elijah nodded slowly.

"He's got nothing to lose." Fleur sighed.

Soon, Hotch appeared by the door with Darrin beside him.

"You got the shot?" Mitchell asked the sniper.

"Negative."

Hotch had stepped in front of Darrin, blocking the shot.

"Damn it, what's he doing?" Mitchell cursed.

That's when the boy ran out, Hotch staying inside. No one knew what was going on.

"Lets get Hotch out of there." Emily spoke.

"That's his call." Rossi shook his head.

At the sound of a gunshot, the team quickly drew their guns and ran into the house. When they got inside, Hotch was detaining Call.

"What happened?" Mitchell asked.

"I couldn't stop him." Hotch walked out.

The team looked at Darrin's father, Bill Jarvis, shot dead in his chair as Emily headed after Hotch.

"It's over." Rossi sighed.

"For now." Morgan nodded.

*********************************

"How do you feel about Hotch?" Reid asked as he set his crutches down once he and Elijah gotten home.

"What do you mean by that?" Elijah asked.

"You know.. He shouldn't be back."

"He shouldn't.. This Foyet stuff is messing with him." Elijah shook his head,"But neither should you."

"I'm fine. Look." Reid kicked his foot.

"The doctor said you needed to rest it." Elijah crossed his arms.

"I am a doctor." He smiled.

"A medical doctor, smartass."

Reid hummed and petted Rigatoni,"Hi buddy."

Rigatoni meowed, biting at his fingers.

"He's teething, y'know?" Reid looked at Elijah.

"His big boy teeth." Elijah hummed, scooping up Rigatoni.

That's when Horatio came through, meowing loudly to make his presence known.

"Hello baby."

Horatio pawed at Elijah.

"Is someone jealous?" Reid hummed.

"Aw, you need to share the attention." Elijah bent down.

"I don't think he wants to." Reid hummed.

"Well, he needs to learn." Elijah swapped the cats in his arms,"Better?"

Horatio purred as he laid down in Elijah's arm.

"I love you." Elijah sighed, stroking him.

"I love you too." Reid hummed, he knew he meant it towards the cats.

"Oh, yeah, I love you as well, honey." Eliiah spoke quickly.

"Thank you." Reid bowed.

"Now, you get comfy. I'll make us something to eat." Elijah sat Horatio down.

Horatio purred, jumping on Rigatoni.

"Behave." Elijah pointed as he walked towards the kitchen.

"I'm gonna have to sit down, okay?' Reid looked at Elijah.

"You better be sitting down because if I come back and you're not resting that leg-"

"You'll finish what we began." He smiled.

Elijah paused,"Is that an invitation?"

"..Maybe."

Elijah smirked before he continued walking,"I'll be back shortly."

"Okay." Reid smiled and leaned back.

Elijah chuckled as he headed into the kitchen.
