Chapter 46 - Nameless, Faceless

Elijah was laid beside Reid, they'd been trying to get some rest. Well, Reid was. Elijah couldn't sleep. Even though Elijah was the one to initially propose, Reid giving Elijah himself a ring plus a new kitten? He was so excited. Elijah leaned over, gently kissing Reid's neck.

Reid hummed softly, shifting to turn to Elijah, "Hi."

"Hi." Elijah smiled at Reid.

"You should be sleeping."

"I can't sleep." Elijah kissed him again,"Too excited."

"About?" He chuckled, moving his hair out of his eyes.

"Well, you got me a ring and a kitten." Elijah rested his head on Reid's chest.

"I guess I did." He hummed.

"I love being this close to you."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"I should hope you do." Reid chuckled.

"Your heartbeats going really fast." Elijah yawned.

"Really?"

"Really."

"I wonder why, maybe because I woke up to my favourite person kissing my neck?"

"I can continue if you want." Elijah looked up at him.

"Maybe.. Are the cats watching?"

"No, we're alone." Elijah looked around,"'I'll be gentle, I promise."

Reid nodded slowly,"Okay."

Elijah cupped Reid's cheek as he readjusted himself, gently placing kisses on Reid's neck. After a few minutes however, the phone began to ring.

"I swear, you don't care, do you?" Elijah muttered, looking up at the ceiling.

Reid laughed, shaking his head,"Let me get it."

Elijah sighed, rolling off of Reid,"Fine."

"Hello?" Reid answered the phone.

"Spence, hi." JJ spoke,"Sorry to call this late but we've been asked to go to a crime scene."

"We've hardly slept since the last one." Reid sighed.

"I know." JJ shook her head,"I'll send you the address, alright?"

"Yeah.. Yeah." Reid nodded.

"I'll see you there." JJ hung up, texting Reid the address moments later.

"We have a case." Reid groaned.

"No.." Elijah turned away.

"I'm sorry hun."

Elijah sighed as he got up,"Can we contiue this later?"

"We can." He nodded.

Elijah walked over to Reid and stroked his hair,"Come on then, love."

"My hair needs cut."

"Whatever you say, doll." Elijah rubbed his eyes,"But we need to change."

"I'll find something." He nodded.

Morgan was laid in bed, trying to sleep. Although Marie kept moving around from his chest, to his face, to Fleur. Marie purred, letting her tail fall on Morgan's face.

Morgan sighed,"We're not getting to sleep, are we?"

"Not at all." Fleur mumbled.

"Well, we tried." Morgan shook his head.

"You're so needy." Fleur petted Marie.

Marie meowed, pawing Fleur's face.

"Yes I see you." Fleur laughed, "Why can't you sleep?"

Marie rolled over, nuzzling into Fleur.

"Yes, right there." She nodded.

Marie stretched out but she seemed content in this spot, at least for now.

"Maybe we can try now." Fleur looked at Morgan.

"I like the sound of that." Morgan hummed, closing his eyes,"Love you."

"I love you too." Fleur kissed his cheek.

Morgan smiled as he began to drift of.. Before the phone rang.

"Pour l'amour de la merde." Fleur cursed,"Je vais tuer quelqu'un"

"Don't do that." Morgan pointed as he sat up, answering his phone,"Yes?"

"Morgan?" JJ asked,"I know it's early but.. We've been called by the police."

"You've gotta be kidding me." Morgan sighed.

"I know you love your sleep, but it's important."

"Just send me the address, we'll be there." Morgan shook his head.

JJ sighed and hung up, soon texting over the address.

"You're not gonna like this, Flo." Morgan turned to her.

"No." Fleur covered his mouth.

Morgan put his hand on her's, nodding.

"Shut up. No." Fleur turned away.

"Babe." Morgan sighed,"You know we have to."

Fleur groaned,"Fine."

"I'll make it up to you later, okay?" Morgan stood up.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Fleur kissed his cheek,"Okay, let's go."

*********************************

"We're not working a case, why call us to a crime scene?" Morgan asked as they walked over to Rossi.

"I was hoping you knew." Rossi looked at the couple.

Emily sighed as she walked over,"JJ said the police told her it was urgent."

"Four hours asleep after what we went through in Canada? It better be." Fleur shook her head.

The group soon headed inside the building and into the apartment where JJ was waiting with the Detective.

"Oh, guys, over here. You guys remember Detective Walker." She nodded to them.

"Thanks for being here. I understand none of you are working on much rest." Walker shook their hands.

"Who's the victim?" Rossi asked.

"His name is Nelson Martinez. From what we can figure, he answered his door, was forced into the apartment at gunpoint, and then shot in the chest. It was all pretty sloppy." Walker sighed.

"No disrespect, sir, but I don't understand why you need us here." Elijah spoke up from where he was sat.

"Two days ago, a local doctor named Tom Barton found a note addressed to him at the hospital. It said the person was planning to kill his son. If Dr Barton tried to keep his boy hidden, one person would die every day in his place." Walker explained.

"And you think this is connected?" Emily raised a brow.

"The note is signed 'LC'." Reid pointed.

"Yesterday, we had another victim, multiple gunshots outside the apartment. The shooter wrote 'LC' in chalk next to the body." Walker told them.

"Now, unless Dr Barton puts his son in harms way, we're gonna keep having a victim a day." Reid shook his head.

"Where's Barton now?" Rossi questioned.

"He's at home. He doesn't know about this victim yet." JJ told them.

"Where's Hotch?"

"He's not answering his cell. I assume it's on vibrate. He'll get the message when he wakes up." JJ shrugged.

"Try him again. He can meet us at Barton's house." Rossi nodded.

JJ nodded as she called him as they left.

*********************************

"Doctor Barton, where's your son right now?" Emily asked him.

"I told him to stay in his room." Barton sighed.

"What did you tell him?" JJ raised a brow.

"I told him that there was a threat against me at the hospital. I told him the police didn't take it seriously, but that they wanted me to stay here for a few days and that I wanted him here with me."

"And Jeffrey's mother?" Rossi raised a brow.

"She died when he was ten. Breast cancer." Barton nodded,"Do you really think someone would hurt Jeffrey?"

"Two people are dead already. Whoever sent that note is definitely serious." Rossi sighed.

"And if I don't let Jeffery out of the house, more people are going to die?" Barton asked.

"Rught now, we have to assume that he will keep killing." Morgan nodded.

"My son is fifteen years old."

"I understand."

"I cannot put him in danger."

"We are not asking you to." Emily assured him,"Even if you were willing, we couldn't send him to school knowing he'd endanger every student in the building."

"What we need to do now is go over everything we know. Piece together how this person fits into your life." Fleur explained.

"Well, I can't think of anyone who would want to kill Jeffrey." Barton shook his head.

"Whoever wrote that note was putting you on notice. This is personal. He wants to remember who he is, and until that happens, he hasn't accomplished what he set out to do." Emily nodded.

"I know you've been asked this before, but please try again." Morgan began,"Do you know anyone with the initials 'LC'?"

Barton sighed,"I've looked everywhere. Day planner, emails, patient lists.. There's no one."

"Have you noticed anyone who may be watching you, either at the hospital or here in the neighborhood?" Emily asked.

"I'm sorry?"

"Both of the victims he's killed have been Hispanic men in their forties. Have you had a patient recently that fits that description?" Walker questioned.

"I'm a trauma surgeon in DC. I have endless patients, all demographics." Barton scoffed.

"We're going to need records of all your recent surgeries." Rossi told him.

"Of course." Barton nodded.

"I'll call Garcia." JJ walked off, Emily following short after.

"I don't understand. If he's mad at me, why not just kill me?" Barton asked.

Before anyone could really answer, Barton's phone rang

"Hello?" He answered.

"Dad?" Bartons son asked.

"Jeffrey?"

Morgan, hearing that, hurried upstairs to Jeffrey's room.

"Please don't be mad at me."

"What's happening? Are you okay? Jeffery, whats going on?" Barton questioned.

"He's not up here." Morgan looked down at them.

"Jeffrey, where are you?" Barton asked.

"I'm at school. I'm okay, please tell the police that I'm okay."

"Jeffrey-"

"I love you." Jeffrey hung up.

With that, all the agents began to leave the house, although Doctor Barton ran out after them.

"Dr Barton, please." Emily ran after him.

"You need to go back inside." Rossi pointed.

"I'm coming with you. I'm going to get my son." Barton nodded.

"Sir, right now, nobody is getting your son." Morgan shook his head.

"Agent Prentiss will explain it." JJ assured him.

"I don't need an explanation. I'm going to get Jeffrey." Barton tried to walk past her.

"You need to listen now. Once your son left the house, the safest place for him to be is at the school." Fleur pointed.

"We can control access in and out. Detective Walker will organize an evacuation as soon as the school day is done, but if we incite a panic now and the Unsub is outside, a lot kids are gonna die." Morgan explained.

"What if the killer is already at the school?" Barton asked.

"Then we'll be there too." JJ nodded.

"Let us do our job." Rossi sighed.

"Jeffrey knows better than this. He doesn't put himself in danger."

"I think he's just trying to do the right thing. He sees what his father does for a living. This is his way of trying to save lives, too." Morgan explained.

"..You'll be there?" Barton asked slowly.

"Yes."

Barton looked arpund,"Tell him I'm not mad at him, okay? Tell him I love him.. And that I'm proud of him."

"We will." Morgan assured him.

Barton nodded slowly as Emily lead him back inside, the others heading off to the school.

"Elijah, you stay with Emily and Reid." Hotch pointed.

"Of course." Elijah hummed, immediately joining Reid and Emily in the house.

"You with us?" Emily asked.

"Mhm." Elijah squeezed Reid's hand.

"I'm gonna call Garcia, you coming?" Reid looked at Elijah.

"I'd love to." Elijah nodded.

*********************************

"Let's concentrate on the notes. For starters, we know that he's male." Reid read through the noted.

"How can you be sure?" Barton asked.

"Women tend to add adjectives and very specific details to their notes. This has none of those." Emily explained.

"Males are also more direct. First sentence, 'I plan to kill your son.'." Elijah told him,"They also tend to focus more on themselves than the person they're writing to. 'I watched you every day, I will watch you lose everything.'"

"We know he surveilled you and your son, which means he either had enough money to be away from a regular job or he's currently unemployed." Reid put a letter down.

"He's most likely a father, he's clearly grieving. He's taken great measures to make sure you feel his pain." Emily sighed.

"Let's start with cases involving teenagers killed, but also anyone with a strong family presence. Just because your son is fifteen that doesn't necessarily mean that his child is the same age." Reid hummed.

"Have you had a lot of cases like this, where someone taunts you with what they're going to do?" Barton questioned.

"A few." Emily nodded.

"How do they end?"

Reid swallowed,"Suicide by cop seems to be an effective way for them to make their point while ending their suffering all at once."

"Jeffrey is leaving school in five hours. There's no way to get through all these patients in time." Barton pointed.

"Well, now we've narrowed it down already. And we still have one hundred left." Reid shrugged.

"I'm sorry. I don't mean to be callous, but as a doctor in the ER, you don't remember names. You operate and you move on." Barton shook his head.

"He's right. There are too many files here for us to profile in such a short period of time." Emily sighed,"Uh- I can get to Hotch's and get back here in half an hour."

"That's our supervisor. We weren't supposed to work today. We're having trouble getting a hold of him." Elijah leaned against Reid.

"But we need more eyes." Emily walked off.

"The note doesn't say that he'll kill Jeffrey today. It says, 'If not today, then tomorrow, or the next day'. Let's say he gets home safe. How long will you all be around to make sure he's okay?" Barton questioned.

"Let's just get through today." Reid nodded.

*********************************

The school day was nearly over and Reid and Elijah were still scanning through files. That's when Barton walked in, putting on his jacket and cleared his throat.

"Where are you going?" Reid blinked.

"The note says not to deviate from my routine and I always pick up Jeffrey on my days off." Barton answered.

"Alright, we can come with you." Reid got up.

Elijah got up as well but his phone rang, so he answered it,"Yeah?"

"L.C on the Unsub's note. It stands for living children." Emily told him.

"Are you sure?"

"It's administrative. It's when they're afraid a patient's gonna go on life support and they don't have a DNR order... Elijah?"

"What if.. The Unsub was trying to tell Doctor Barton that he is actually the target." Elijah spoke slowly,"And that he's going to leave his son without a father."

That's when Elijah heard the front door open.

"Oh for goodness- Barton!" Elijah hurried to the front door.

Just as Elijah got to the door.. A gunshot went off as Reid pushed Barton away, both of them landing on the ground. Elijah hurried to Reid's side, crouching beside him as the gunman stood a few feet in front of them.

"Are you hit?" Reid winced, looking at Barton.

"No." Barton shook his head.

"Get my gun- Elijah, my gun."

"You're gonna be the death of me." Elijah muttered as he grabbed the gun from Reid's belt.

"Get away from him!" The shooter walked forward.

"Whatever you do, stay down." Elijah looked at the pair before turning his attention to Meyers,"Drop the gun."

"He killed my son!"

"He did not kill your son. Your son was killed in a car accident." Elijah pointed his gun at Meyers.

"Stand up!"

"I'm going to ask you again. I do not want to shoot you. Please, drop the gun."

"Stand up, you coward." Meyers began to cry.

"Mr Meyers, listen to me. It's over. Doctor Barton did not kill your son." Elijah spoke softy,"Your son was killed by a car. And this isn't what he would've wanted, okay? So drop the gun, please."

Meyers shook, looking between the gun and the trio.

"Don't do it."

"I'm sorry.." Meyers sighed and raised his arm.

Before he could shoot, Elijah raised his gun and shot Meyers. Meyers fell to the ground, luckily Elijah didn't do too much damage. Barton turned to Reid, going to check him.

"I'm fine- Go to him. Go to him!" Reid pointed to Meyers.

Reid then winced as he looked at his leg before turning to Elijah as Barton hurried over to Meyers.

"Are you okay?" Elijah stroked his hair,"God, you're bleeding."

"I'll be okay- Is Mr Meyers okay?"

"He better not be." Elijah muttered.

Reid gave Elijah a look.

"Wh- He shot you." Elijah pointed.

"And I'm okay, it went straight through." He winced as the ambulance and others pulled up to the scene.

Elijah sighed, putting pressure over his wound,"You really need to stick around when I'm on the phone."

"I'll keep it in mind." Reid nodded as the others ran over.

"Are you okay?" JJ asked quickly.

"I'll be okay. But we need Emily."

"Where is she?" Rossi raised a brow.

"She's at the hospital. Something's happened to Hotch." Reid told them.

*********************************

When the team arrived at the hospital, they headed to Hotch's room where Emily got up from her chair to meet them.

"He still isn't conscious yet." She sighed.

"You're sure it was Foyet?" Rossi asked.

"He had Morgan's credentials." Emily nodded.

"Did they catch him on the security camera?" Fleur tilted her head.

"You could see him dropping Hotch off, but the camera's only on the entrance, so I have no idea which direction he went after leaving the hospital." Emily shook her head.

"It doesn't make sense for him to have brought Hotch to the ER." JJ added.

"We know Foyet gets off on power and control. Maybe what he wants is for Hotch to know that his life was in his hands." Rossi suggested.

"He could do that without risking the hospital." Morgan shook his head.

"Agents, he's waking up." The doctor walked over, Remember, he's weak. Dont push him."

With that, the group headed into Hotch's room as he slowly opened his eyes.

"Where am I?" Hotch asked slowly.

"You're in the hospital." Rossi told him.

"How did I get here?"

"Foyet drove you." Morgan nodded.

"Can you remember what happened?" Fleur tilted her head.

Hotch stayed quiet for a few moments,"..What did he take?"

"What do you mean?" Rossi asked.

"The Reaper always takes something from his victims. Do we know what he took?"

"There was a page missing from your day planner." Emily sighed, "In the address section, the 'B's'."

"What did he leave?" Hotch asked.

"I don't know."

"He also leaves something with his victims."

"I looked over your whole apartment, nothing felt out of place." Emily told him.

"Where are my clothes." Hotch looked up at her.

Fleur grabbed the bag of Hotchs things, handing it to him. Hotch looked in the bag and pulled out his wallet, looking at the slightly bloodied picture of Haley and Jack before letting out a shaky breath.

"Haley's maiden name is Brooks. I always listed her in the 'B's' in my personal information in case it fell into the wrong hands." Hotch explained,"He knows where they live.."

*********************************

The Agents walked into Haley's house, looking around, making sure Foyet wasn't there. However, they hadn't found Haley or Jack yet. Everyone split up, searching the whole house before Morgan burst through one of the doors. Haley screamed, throwing the laundry that she was folding and quickly took out her earphones

"It's okay." JJ assured her.

"What are you doing here?" Haley panted.

"It's okay, everything's okay." JJ told her.

"We've got her." Fleur spoke into the comms.

"What's going on?" Haley questioned.

"Is there anyone else in the house?" JJ asked.

"No, there's no one here." She shook her head.

"Where's Jack?" Fleur put her gun away.

"He's at a friend's house for a playdate." Haley told her as Rossi walked in.

"We need to get him back here. We'll explain everything." Rossi explained.

"Where's Aaron?" Haley looked around.

"He's in the hospital." Morgan told her.

"W-What?"

"Haley please.. Call for Jack. Tell them I'm on my way to him. I promise you we'll explain. Call for him now." Fleur sighed.

"Tell me what happened to Aaron." Haley shook her head.

*********************************

"Is this really necessary?" Haley asked.

"I'm afraid so." Rossi nodded.

"For how long?" She sighed.

"I don't know." Rossi admitted.

"Mommy!" Jack shouted as Fleur brought him in,"They let me turn on the siren!"

"Wow, that's so great, baby! Did you have fun?" Haley asked as she crouched down.

"Mhm." Jack nodded.

Haley smiled, hugging Jack.

"I'll help start a bag in Jack's room." JJ nodded.

"How many times did you run it? Three?"

"Yeah." Jack giggled.

*********************************

"Seriously, I'm fine." Reid assured Elijah.

"You got shot in the leg." Elijah pointed.

"So?"

"Babe, I'm serious." Elijah sighed, stroking his hair.

"I'm not dead."

"Yeah? And what if he shot higher? What if you got hurt more? What if-"

"Elijah." Reid held his hand.

"Sorry- Sorry.." Elijah squeezed his hand.

"I'm okay. Don't worry."

"I don't want to lose you. Ever." Elijah sighed.

"I know. And you won't." Reid assured him.

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Elijah smiled softly and kissed Reid's hand,"I suppose this puts a damper on this evening's plans?"

"For now." He chuckled.

"That means I'll get to look after you." Elijah hummed.

"Yes, you can."

"You're in good hands." Elijah assured him.

"I should assume so." Reid smiled.

Elijah nodded slowly, still holding Reid's hand,"Is pasta alright tonight?"

"Pasta will be fine." Reid nodded.

Elijah kissed Reid's forehead,"I love you, Spencer."

"I love you too."
