Chapter 42 - A Shade of Grey

"So explain it to me again?" Emily blinked.

"And slowly, this time." Morgan nodded.

"You guys weren't- No." Reid shook his head,"I'm not doing that again."

"Just once? For me?" Elijah hummed, leaning against him.

"I've ran out of words today." Reid shrugged.

"Please?" Elijah hummed,"I'll give you a kiss."

".. So actually I've gotten some more words." Reid smiled softly,"It's like this magic, little ball of goodness."

"I see." Emily nodded slowly.

"Guys?" Hotch walked in.

"I think I know what you're going to say." Morgan stood up from his chair.

"I've got no time to explain. Wheels up in five."

"Shit, it must be important." Elijah kissed Reid's cheek before walking off to grab his bag.

"I'll tell my story on the plane." Reid nodded.

"I look forward to it." Emily pointed.

Reid smiled and sat back.

*********************************

"What time was he taken?" Morgan asked as he drove.

"Between midnight and 6:00am." Emily looked through the notes.

"Same M.O as the other two?" He raised a brow.

"All abducted from their beds in the middle of the night. The first two were found strangled with blunt force head trauma. Dumped in the Wharton State Forest." Fleur nodded.

The man on the radio then began to speak about the amber alert and the press conference that the police were going to hold. Once they parked, they saw the crowd around the victim's house, the victim's family stood behind Detective Lancaster as he spoke.

"I'm glad they took our advice and started the press conference." Emily sighed.

"Yeah, but it would be nice if there weren't so many people walking all over the crime scene." Rossi crossed his arms.

After the Detective finished his speech, he walked over to the Agents,"That was fast."

"Well, we don't have a lot of time." Morgan told him,"Can you show us around?"

"You should have taken this off property." Rossi sighed.

"Yeah, well, the truth is, I wanted to do this down at the station, but Danny and Sarah didn't want to leave the house in case Kyle came back." Detective Lancaster explained as they walked to the house, handing over a picture,"That's Kyle."

Morgan turned the picture around, on the back of it was written, 'To Uncle Bill, love Kyle.'

"Uncle Bill?" Morgan asked.

"We're friends and neighbors. Dan and I grew up around here." Lancaster told them.

"You know, your involvement in this case could be a conflict of interest." Morgan turned.

"Yeah, I appreciate your concern, but I'm not going to stand around while Kyle's still out there." Lancaster pointed,"I know the other two cases. I didn't want to admit this to the press, but there's no doubt in my mind that Kyle's the third victim."

"You know what we're looking at. 99% of abducted children are killed in the first 24 hours." Rossi crossed his arms.

"I know.. I'm going to check on them." Lancaster nodded before walking over to Kyle's parents.

"We saw the pictures. We know what this guy does to little boys." Rossi sighed, turning to Morgan.

"Rossi, Kyle Murphy might be the 1% that makes it." Morgan shook his head.

"It could take a miracle." He shrugged.

"Well, for his sake, less hope he gets one." Morgan sighed.

*********************************

Emily and Fleur walked into the household, sitting down with the parents and the brother of the victim.

"Thank you all for speaking with us. We cannot stress enough how much time is of the essence here." Emily told them,"Abductions from the home are rare, and that allows us to narrow down the suspect pool even more."

"What makes them unusual?" Dan tilted his head.

"Abductions typically are about timing and opportunity. A child walks home alone or gets separated in a shopping center, that sort of situation." Emily began.

"This is a sophisticated, high risk crime. Whoever did this has good social skills. They're highly functioning and they have a steady job. He wouldn't look out of place to you, you wouldn't be alarmed if your children were talking to him." Fleur contiued.

"So, he may be wearing a uniform like a delivery man or a mail carrier." Emily added,"Have you noticed anyone hanging around the neighborhood, taking with children?"

"Nothing comes to mind." Dan shook his head.

"No. I don't.. I don't know." Sarah was holding herself.

"Mrs Murphy?" Fleur turned to her, "Do you want to take a break?"

"I.. I think I need to lie down." Sarah nodded slowly,"S-sorry."

"That's okay." Emily assured her.

Dan helped Sarah stand and she slowly walked off.

"Are you able to continue?" Emily asked.

"Sure." Dan nodded as he sat down, patting his other son, Danny's, leg.

"Danny. You and Kyle, you always walked to and from the bus stop together, right?" Fleur tilted her head.

"Yeah." Danny nodded.

"Have any other strangers tried to talk to you or your brother recently?" Fleur asked.

"The bus driver asks us questions sometimes, I don't know." Danny looked down.

"What time of day do the boys usually play outside?" Emily turned to Dan.

"Well, they both had practice after school, but lately Kyle's been into video games and Danny loves building model aeroplanes." Dan told them.

"Okay, that actually tells us a lot. We're going to need you to make a list of everyone who's been in or around your home in the past six months. Whoever took Kyle had probably been in this house before." Emily nodded,"He watched the family routine. He knew exactly where everyone slept and he got Kyle out without anyone seeing or hearing anything."

"Daddy?" Danny looked up at his father.

"Yeah?"

"Can I go play now?"

"Yeah, go to the family room. I'll be there soon." Dan nodded as Danny left,"He doesn't really understand what's going on."

"That is probably for the best." Emily sighed,"Mr Murphy, we are going to do everything we can to find Kyle."

"Thank you." Dan sniffed.

*********************************

"After the first two abductions, Cherry Hill compiled a list of registered sec offenders in Camden County." JJ walked over with a stack of papers, sitting them on the table,"There are 439 within a 30-mile radius of where the boys were taken. They have been knocking on doors, conducting interviews. They haven't been able to come up with anything."

"They should've called us in earlier." Hotch sighed,"There are a lot of these men we can eliminate right away."

"You got that right." Elijah shook his head.

"Okay, no one new to this area. This Unsub knows these neighbourhoods. That takes time. The victims are three boys so cross off anyone who targets females." Hotch began.

"We can eliminate anyone who's preferential age is under seven or over eleven." Reid continued, writing on the board.

"These boys look nothing alike so discount suspects who have a very specific type. If the victims have only brown or blond hair, they're off the list. Our Unsub's taste is more broad." Hotch added.

"Looks like his preference was based more on age instead of physical characteristics." Elijah nodded as he watched Reid.

"Let's make a special pile for more organised offenders. Anyone who's been arrested for stalking, breaking and entering, burglary." Hotch pointed.

"How are we doing so far?" Reid asked.

"With these parameters I can probably cross off half the names." JJ shrugged.

"Good, let's keep going." Hotch nodded.

*********************************

Once the rest of the team joined the others at the station, Hotch spoke,"We've narrowed the list dowm to five men."

"Already?" Lancaster raised a brow.

"Registered sex offender Hugh Rollins, 43, lived in Camden County his whole life. In and out of foster care throughout his young life and acquired quite the nice rap sheet." Reid pointed.

"What's his connection to the victims?" Morgan asked.

"Two years ago he got a steady job installing TVs." JJ nodded.

"Have any of the families purchased a new TV?" Emily questioned.

"The first two did. Garcia found something else." JJ pointed,"Rollins had no cell or bank activity on the days the boys were abducted."

"We haven't been able to connect Rollins to Kyle yet." Elijah sighed.

"So, what, are we going to wait for more evidence?" Morgan crossed his arms.

"No, there isn't time. We have sufficient probable cause." Hotch pointed.

"Let's go pick him up." Rossi nodded.

*********************************

The team managed to arrest Kyle Rollins and he was sat in the interview room, the other side had bagged evidence found in his house, toys belonging to the boys. JJ then knocked on the window, signaling Rossi.

"That means the parents have identified the toys that we found in your closet. They belonged to their boys. It's over for you." Rossi shrugged as he spoke to Rollins in the interview room,"Where's Kyle Murphy?"

Rollins shook his head,"I don't know."

"Well that's not going to help you. Andy Loeser, he was eleven. Jimmy Seager, he was nine. Now Kyle, he's only seven. You keep going younger." Rossi showed pictures of the victims,"Guys like you don't last very long in Trenton State. Did you know that the inmates watch the news every night? I bet they're looking forward to seeing you alone. Life in Trenton might as well be a death sentence. Are you sure you don't want to tell me where Kyle is?"

"If I tell you about this kid, I'm not going to Trenton, hm?" Rollins raised a brow,"I want that written down."

Rossi hesitated before he got up and walked out to the others, telling them about what Rollins said.

"He's going to confess to killing Kyle?" Lancaster asked as they walked into his office.

"He's desperate. Knows he won't survive state prison." Rossi shook his head.

"The DA's not gonna offer a deal until he has more evidence linking Rollins to Kyle." Elijah told him as he walked over.

"Well, what about the toys?" Lancaster tilted his head.

"The Seager's ID'd one but Dan couldn't." Elijah shrugged.

"He never delivered a television to the Murphys House." Hotch sighed.

"So, he saw him some other way. Look, we have this guy, huh? He's about to confess." Lancaster pointed,"He's done everything the same. Let's nail him."

"He won't confess without the deal." Rossi shook his head.

"We need more evidence." Elijah nodded.

"Well then we need to find Kyle, that'll prove it. What about the woods?"

"Well, it's 100,000 acres to cover." Hotch pointed.

"He's out there somewhere. I'm not sticking around here." Lancaster shook his head as he stormed out

"Good luck with that." Elijah rolled his eyes.

"He's too close to this case." Hotch sighed.

"We warned him." Rossi shook his head.

"I sure would like to have some psychical evidence that Rollins was in that house. Elijah, take Reid over there. He's got fresh eyes." Hotch nodded.

"You got it." Elijah hummed.

"Rollins is scared, he's ready to talk." Rossi told him.

"I'll see what I can do." Hotch walked off.

*********************************

"I just talked to Rollins. He said he dumped Kyle's body in the river, he's clearly lying. He doesn't have any connection to that boy." Hotch walked over to the others, they'd just found Kyle's body in the woods.

"The disposal of Kyle's body is very different from the other two. He was gently placed on the ground, neatly laid to rest with his hands by his sides. Rollins discarded these two boys like trash." Fleur placed the photo of Kyle down.

"We think Kyle may not have slept in his room last night." Reid added.

"Where do you think he was?" Hotch asked.

"I think on his brother's room. Danny has bunk beds. Both bunks were slept in, and whoever slept in the bottom one wet the bed and left Kyle's bear." Elijah explained.

"So do we think somebody destroyed Kyle's room to make it look like he was abducted like the other two victims?" Morgan suggested.

Hotch looked around before he spoke quieter,"Who else knows the details of all three cases?"

"Lancaster." Rossi nodded.

"Morgan, call Garcia. See if she can find out anything about Lancaster that we don't already know." Hitch instructed,"Reid, Howards, Prentiss, watch the video of the press conference. See if you can find anything."

"Want me to talk to Rollins again?" Rossi asked.

"Yes. And I don't need to remind you all where we are. Please be discreet." Hotch nodded.

"Discreet is my specialty." Elijah assured him.

*********************************

"We found Kyle Murphy's body in the woods. Why did you lie?" Rossi and Elijah walked into the interview room,"You aren't the type to take credit for something you didn't do."

"I can't go to Trenton." Rollins shook his head.

"As long as you're straight with me, I'll tell the DA you cooperated." Elijah leaned forward,"Is that what you needed to hesr?"

"People don't understand. I can't explain why I do these things. All I know is that I can't help myself. I don't want to die in prison." Rollins panicked.

"You're gonna be in one for the rest of your life, Hugh." Rossi told him.

"No, I'm talking about what they do to people like me! I don't wanna go like that."

"Then tell us the truth." Elijah sighed.

"He's.. He's too young. He's not my type." Rollins admitted.

*********************************

"Can't tell you how excited I am for this." Elijah muttered as they approached the Murphy house.

They knew Rollins didn't kill Kyle, but they had a feeling they might know who did.

"You'll do great." Fleur assured him as she knocked on the Murphy's door.

Dan soon opened the door, letting them in,"I appreciate you two coming by, but Bill was already here. He told us about Kyle."

"That's not why we're here, Mr Murphy. We need to talk." Fleur sighed.

"Can't it wait?" Dan asked,"Uhm, Danny's not taking the news so great."

"No, I'm sorry. We need to talk right now."

"Hugh Rollins didn't kill your son." Elijah crossed his arms.

"If Rollins didn't kill Kyle, who did?' Dan questioned.

"You tell me."

"Someone broke into my house and took my boy. When I woke up, he was gone." Dan pointed.

"Who did this, Dan?" Elijah asked.

"I don't know!" Dan snapped, Sarah walking to his side"My little boy is dead, and you have a suspect in custody. Isn't that good enough?"

"You've been holding hands since I first saw you." Fleur spoke, watching the couple hold each other.

"What's wrong with that?" Dan asked, holding Sarah's hands.

"When couples lose a child, the grief is overwhelming. They often blame each other and they drift apart. That's what happened to the Seagers, but with you two it's different." Fleur explained,"It's like you're protecting each other.. So..I'm going to ask again. What happened last night?"

"Did you, or Sarah, did you get upset with Kyle?" Elijah raised a brow as Dan let go of Sarah.

"No." Dan shook his head.

"Was there an accident?"

"No!"

"Then what are you hiding?" Elijah raised his voice.

Fleur got out her laptop, showing the video of the press conference with Sarah. Repeating the part where she says she's Kyle's mother.

"Please, stop.." Sarah pleaded.

"You are Kyle's mom, Sarah. Just tell me what happened to him."

"Oh, God.." Dan looked away, both parents were in tears.

"Did.. Did one of you kill Kyle?" Fleur sighed.

Dan shook his head and Elijah's eyes wandered over to Danny, still sat on the couch.

*********************************

Fleur, Elijah and Hotch were in the station now with Danny, Sarah and Dan.

"Detecive Lancaster just confessed." Hotch sighed.

Dan looked around,"I need to see him."

"First we need you to confirm the timeliness again. We'll compare it to Lancaster's statement. From both of you." Hotch walked to the door

"What about Danny?" Sarah asked, looking up from the table.

"He doesn't need to hear any more of this. Howards, Deans, do you mind?" Hotch asked.

"We've got him." Elijah assured them.

Hotch then took Dan and Sarah into the interview room across the hall, closing the door behind them, although he left the blinds up.

Fleur closed the door, opening the blinds so Danny could see his parents,"Hey Danny, look, they're just right here. Can you see them?"

"Mhm." Danny nodded.

"Okay." Fleur sat down.

"Can I have a snack?" Danny asked.

"Yeah, sure." Elijah nodded, looking in the cupboard for something.

Fleur looked at Elijah, biting her cheek as he brought over some chips and Sprite.

"You got any games here?" Danny turned to Fleur.

"I don't think so." Fleur looked around.

"Can I watch cartoons?"

"Sure, yeah. Let's see if we can find some." Fleur grabbed the remote.

As she flicked through the channels, she landed on the news. They were showing the press conference again. Fleur tilted her head, watching Danny on the television. He wasn't acting the way a child would if they lost a brother. That's when Danny, who was struggling to open his packet of chips, began to smash the bag on the table.

"Hey hey, hey. Stop, stop- Hey! I can open them for you, okay?" Elijah took the packet, gently opening it before handing them back to Danny,"There you go, it's open."

"Do you get mad like that a lot?" Fleur asked.

"My mom says I have a.. Bad temper." Danny told her.

"Huh.. Do you and Kyle play together?" Fleur hummed.

"Only when I had to. He was always breaking my stuff." Danny huffed.

"Oh, I had a younger cousin that did that. It drove me crazy." Elijah nodded slowly.

"I'm not going to miss that." Danny shrugged,"He would always sleep in my room."

"I heard Kyle liked your bunk beds." Elijah hummed.

"They weren't for him. They were for my friends. He was always wetting the bed like a baby."

"Is that why you didn't want to play with him? Was it- Well, he was a baby, wasn't he?" Elijah crossed his arms.

"Yeah, but he thought he was big enough to play with me. Like today, he broke my model plane. It took me all week to make it." Danny sighed.

"Today? How did that happen?" Fleur leaned forward.

"I woke up really early and I wanted to finish it. I had it all set up in the basement." Danny began.

"What time was that?"

"Don't know, mom and dad were still asleep. But Kyle came downstairs and asked to play with my plane so.. I let him look at it." Danny explained,"And I only left him for a minute but when I came back, he broke it so I hit him. I hit him hard."

"After you did that to Kyle, how did you feel?" Fleur sighed.

"Like I was gonna get in trouble." Danny shrugged, opening his bottle of Sprite.

That's when JJ walked in, handing the duo Kyle's autopsy report. Elijah looked over the autopsy report before taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes. What Danny had done to Kyle..

"..I'll go to the parents." Fleur sighed softly.

"I'll.. Yeah." Elijah nodded to Danny.

Fleur slowly got up from her chair, walking out of the room and into the interview room,"Danny told me what he did to Kyle. Do you know what he did?"

"Yes, we know." Dan nodded slowly.

"Everything he did?"

Dan and Sarah looked up at her. They didn't know..

"Danny stuffed plane parts down Kyle's throat." Fleur admitted.

"What..? What would- He wouldn't do that." Dan shook his head.

"You told Danny to watch his temper. What else did you worry about? Danny said you had a puppy, but he died. Your son is ill, he needs help. The truth is, the only thing Danny isn't capable of is remorse. He feels nothing. The son you were trying to protect is a sociopath." Fleur sighed.

Both parents were quiet, holding onto each other as they looked through the window to see Danny, eating his chips.

*********************************

"That was.. Wow." Fleur sighed as she sat down on the plane.

"That's one way to put it." JJ shook her head.

"Hopefully Danny gets the help he needs." Morgan nodded.

"I'm just glad I don't need to sit in a room with him anymore." Elijah pointed.

"He's creepy." Rossi sighed.

"He nearly bit me."

"Elijah." Emily chuckled.

"What? He did." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Well everyone's okay." Hotch nodded.

"Let's hope it stays that way." Rossi sighed.

"Hopefully." Reid shrugged,"Danny will get the help he needs and everything will be fine."
