Chapter 39 - Boese
Elijah hummed as he sat at his desk, fiddling with something in his hands.
"Elijah." Fleur walked up to him.
"Yes?" Elijah spun in his chair to look at her.
"I need help."
"Talk to me, darling."
"I.. I have a grey hair." Fleur covered her mouth.
"Oh my- It's all the stress." Elijah shook his head.
"I need to dye my hair!" Fleur pointed.
"Honey, I'm sure no one will notice." Elijah assured her.
"Is it noticeable?" She pointed to the hair.
Elijah squinted,"No. And even if it was, you could pull it off."
"Oh, mon dieu." Fleur grabbed a small mirror from her bag.
"Darling, you still look young and beautiful." Elijah draped himself over his chair.
"Next thing you know, it'll be wrinkles."
"Worrying about getting wrinkles will definitely bring them on quicker. Relax."
"I'll need to be checking you next." Fleur pointed.
"Fleur. You are fine."
Fleur sighed and sat down at her desk,"I'm fine."
"Thank you." Elijah went back to fiddling around.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah- I've just been thinking about something."
"Do tell." Fleur moved her chair closer to Elijah.
"You have to keep quiet about it, okay?" Elijah pointed.
"My lips are sealed."
"Well- Because I didn't know when I'd see them next, I told Reid's parents that I was going to marry him.. In the future." Elijah admitted.
"Oh Elijah." Fleur smiled.
"And.. I may or may not have gone out impulsively last night and bought an engagement ring."
"You did?" Fleur gasped.
"I did." Elijah showed her the box.
"Let's see the ring."
Elijah smiled and opened the box, revealing the golden ring with three small diamonds. It wasn't anything special, but it was beautiful.
"Oh Elijah.. It's beautiful." Fleur nodded.
"I did try." He chuckled.
"You'll do great when the time comes." Fleur looked up at him.
"It won't be any time soon, I spent enough on this ring." Elijah shook his head.
"You can always get engaged then wait." Fleur assured him.
"Oh, it will be a long while of waitinv." Elijah sighed,"Although we could go to Spain, or the Netherlands.."
"You could." She pointed.
"I might."
"The sooner the better." Fleur chuckled.
"I agree with you there." Elijah nodded as he put the ring box in his pocket.
"I'm happy for you, Eli." Fleur rubbed his arm.
"Thank you, darling." Elijah smiled at her.
Fleur returned the smile as Reid and Morgan walked in.
"Morning, boys." Elijah hummed.
"Morning, kid." Morgan waved.
"Have we got a case?"
"We do. Hotch wants us in the round table." Reid chuckled.
"I must be psychic." Elijah stood up.
"Let's go." Fleur got up, going to the Conference Room.
Inside the Conference Room, JJ, Hotch and Rossi were sat waiting for them.
"Brace yourself, this case isn't a fun one." JJ sighed,"The body of a woman was just found in a nearby park, Anna James, we belive she's the third victim."
"How did she die?" Fleur asked.
"The Medical Examiner said drug overdose, GHB." JJ sighed, "It also appears she was.. Sexually assaulted."
"Oh god." Morgan sighed,"So we've maybe got a spiker?"
"That's what it looks like." JJ nodded,"The other victims where found in similar locations, Lynette Holmes and-"
"Jessie." Elijah looked down at the file.
"Jessie?" Rossi turned,"You know her?"
"Jessica Ramirez, we went to college together." Elijah sighed.
"I'm sorry, Elijah." Reid sighed.
"No, it's fine. I haven't spoken to her since." Elijah shook his head,"She was one of my party friends."
"We'll get justice for her." Reid nodded.
"Did Jessie have any family in the area?" Morgan asked.
"Not really. Just an aunt but she isn't local." Garcia shook her head.
"Occupation?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Bartender." She nodded.
"Okay, Reid, Deans and Morgan go to the bar she worked at. The rest of us will go to the M.E and the family of the victims." Hotch explained.
"Keep in touch." Elijah pointed to Fleur.
"You keep in touch first." Fleur chuckled.
"I'll keep your boy in check." Elijah winked.
"Hey." Morgan nudged him.
"You heard me."
"Let's go." Reid got up from his seat.
*********************************
'This the place, huh?" Morgan looked around as they walked into the club.
"We can start with.. Her co-workers. Eli, can you start there?" Reid asked him.
"Of course I can." Elijah hummed,"You two stay out of trouble."
"You got it, boss." Morgan chuckled.
Elijah chuckled as he walked over to the bar, squinting at the male bartender. He looked so.. Familar. Just like the club.. He'd worked here before, in college. The Black Rose.
"What can I get you?" The bartender walked over.
"Oh, just a water. I'm on the job." Elijah shook his hesd,"SSA Elijah Deans, FBI."
"Deans?" He tilted his head,"Elijah?" He smiled.
Elijah's eyes widened,"Oh my god, James?"
"It's been years. How have you been?"
"Oh, I've been great." Elijah smiled,"Kept clean."
"Good for you." James handed him a glass of water,"I'm glad you got off.. But I missed you."
"I missed you too." Elijah took a sip of water,"But I'm here for other reasons. Did you hear about Jessie?"
"Yeah.. She worked here for a good few years. How did she die?"
"Overdose." Elijah sighed.
"She wasn't addicted to drugs."
"That's why we ruled it as a murder, we think someone spiked her."
"Spiked? You think it happened here?"
"Possibly, but we don't know." Elijah shook his head as he took another sip,"Did you see anything weird? Suspicious?"
James watched Elijah closely, licking his lips,"No.. I didn't."
"I don't think you dried this glass properly." Elijah joked after his third sip, the water tasted.. Soapy?
"Shit, sorry. Do you want another glass?" James asked.
"No, it's fine." Elijah assured him,"I'm already halfway through."
"So.. FBI, huh? I never imagined my Eli to get himself to the FBI." James chuckled.
"Your.. Eli?" Elijah raised a brow.
"Remember the fun we used to have? When we came home from parties." James sighed,"The things we did."
"We.. Didn't do anything. I slept on your couch when those other boys slipped me things." Elijah blinked.
"That's only what I wanted you to believe then." James shook his head,"I wanted to protect you."
"James.. James, you didn't.."
"Are you okay Elijah? You look a bit tired." James tilted his head.
Elijah stepped back from the bar, holding his head. No.. No, this wasn't happening.
"Come on. Let's go sit down." James walked over to him.
"Elijah?" Reid walked over,"What's going on?"
"No- James, don't touch me." Elijah pushed Reid away from him.
"Who- James? Elijah, it's Reid." Reid assured him,"Can you get him a glass of water?" He looked at James.
"Oh, of course." James turned to get another glass.
"No- Ambulance." Elijah squinted, trying to hold himself steady,"I need.. An ambulance."
"An ambulance?" Reid blinked,"Morgan!"
"I'm on it." Morgan took out his phone.
"I don't want to die.." Elijah staggered forward.
"It's okay. Just breathe." Reid assured him,"What did he say to you?"
"James.. It was James.." Elijah went limp.
Reid looked up at the bartender,"..What's your name?"
"Andrew, why?" James turned around.
"Stick around. We'll need a statement for you." Reid pointed,"Morgan take Elijah to the ambulance, quickly."
"I've got him." Morgan picked up Elijah.
"Elijah, you're going to be okay." Reid assured him,"Try and stay awake."
"Reid..? Reid, I'm scared.."
"You're okay. You hear me?"
"I'm.. I'm okay.." Elijah mumbled as they reached the ambulance.
"I'll go with him. You talk to that Andrew." Reid told Morgan.
"On it." Morgan headed back inside the bar.
"Elijah? Look at me." Reid sat down in the ambulance.
"Trying.."
"You're doing great." Reid nodded.
"Reid... Reid, I'm sorry.." Elijah's eyes began to close.
"He's dropping!" The paramedic shouted.
"Elijah. Wake up." Reid looked at the stats.
Elijah's heart rate dropped and.. He flatlined. He was dying as the paramedics worked on him.
"Get him- Get him back."
"We're doing our best here, sir." The paramedic contiued cpr.
Reid gently took Elijah's hand,"Come back to me.. Come back."
After a minute or so, his heart started again.. He was alive.
"Oh thank god." Reid let out a sigh of relief.
That's when they got to the hospital, hurrying Elijah inside as they explained the situation to the doctors that joined them.
"Am I allowed to come with him?" Reid asked, following the paramedics.
"You have to stay here until he's stable." A paramedic stopped him.
"Okay. My name is Spencer Reid if you need to shout me." Reid told him.
The paramedic nodded as he headed after Elijah and the others. Reid paced for a second before calling Fleur.
"Fleur? Look- I need you to get to the hospital." Reid shook his head.
"What's going on?" Fleur asked.
"It's Elijah- He's been spiked."
"Spiked?" Fleur got up,"What?"
"He was interviewing the bartender, I think he's got something to do with it." Reid sighed.
"What was the bartender's name?"
"He claims it was Andrew."
"Did Elijah say anything?"
"He said 'It was James'. He.. Didnt like it when I touched him.' Reid told her.
"James.. His ex James?" Fleur blinked,"He was a bartender."
"I shouldn't have left him alone." Reid sighed.
"You were doing what Hotch said." Fleur assured him,"What hospital are you at?"
"St. Roland's."
"I'll be there. I'll get the team to send someone to the bar." Fleur nodded,"Keep me updated."
"I will." Reid hung up.
*********************************
Reid sat in the chair in the hospital room. Elijah was out of testing and was okay now. He was just sleeping. Fleur, Rossi and Emily were in the waiting room waiting for answers.
"Merda... La mia testa.." Elijah mumbled as he started to wake up.
"Elijah?" Reid looked at him.
"Reid.." Elijah turned his head.
"You're okay." He smiled.
"Of course I'm okay, why wouldn't I be?"
"You.. You were spiked.. You died."
"Hey, now we're even." Elijah winked.
"Don't. That's not funny." Reid sighed.
"Oh, I'm sorry darling." Elijah reached up, holding his cheek.
"You could've stayed dead." He pointed.
"But I didn't."
"Luckily." He shook his head.
"I'm.. Sorry for scaring you." Elijah sighed.
"I should've been at the bar with you."
"No, do not even think about blaming yourself."
"You literally had water- You should've been okay."
"It tasted funny.. I should've stopped drinking it." Elijah sighed.
"You didn't know." Reid shook his head.
"I should've... It's just like before."
"Before?"
"In.. In college." Elijah looked down.
"What happened?"
"You have to promise not to be mad." Elijah reached for his hand.
"I could never." Reid shook his head, taking Elijah's hand.
"In college, James.. He was a good friend of mine. We'd party, drink and I'd.. He let me sleep on his couch when I'd had too much to drink or been given drugs." Elijah began slowly.
"Yeah.." Reid gently squeezed his hand.
"He told me.. Oh God." Elijah closed his eyes, trying to hold himself together.
"Elijah, it's okay." Reid assured him.
"No- No, it's not." Elijah shook his head,"I can.. I can still feel his hands."
"I'm here.. Spencer is here. Not James. Just me."
"If you and Morgan hadn't.." Elijah stopped himself as his tears began to fall.
"Hey, hey. Elijah, it's okay." Reid assured him.
Elijah was quiet. All these years, he'd thought James was a friend. Sure, he was a bit clingy and overbearing but he hadn't thought anything of it.. Until now.
"You're okay." Reid nodded.
Elijah leaned against Reid's shoulder,"Where are the others?"
"Emily, Fleur and Rossi are out in the waiting area. The others are at the bar looking for James."
Elijah nodded slowly,"Hey.. Reid?"
"Hm?" Reid looked at him.
"I actually have a present for you, it was in my pocket." Elijah told him, gesturing to his jumper on a nearby chair.
Reid looked at the jumper, picking it up and giving it to Elijah,"Here."
"Mhm." Elijah reached inside his pocket and pulled out the ring box.
"What is it?" Reid blinked.
"Spencer Reid... I love you, so much. I'm so glad that you came into my life and I never want to lose you. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me.." Elijah opened the box, revealing the ring,"I guess what I'm trying to ask is.. Will you marry me?"
Reid smiled,"Elijah.. Yes."
Elijah smiled as he took the ring from the ring box and carefully put it on Reid's finger.
"You know it's not legal here yet. Technically, we could always fly out to Belgium.. Or The Netherlands. Sweden.. Or even Norway." Reid rambled.
"I've been doing my research." Elijah cupped Reid's face, kissing his nose,"But we can think about that later."
"Right- Yes. Yes. Of course."
"Can you get Fleur? I want to tell her."
Reid nodded, giving Elijah a kiss before he ran off. Elijah smiled softly as he leaned back. He couldn't believe he'd just done that.
"Is he okay?" Fleur rose from her seat.
"He's awake- Doing good now." Reid nodded quickly.
"What's wrong?" Rossi asked.
"Nothing's wrong, I'm just happy." Reid assured him.
"Can we see him?" Emily stood up.
"Yes- Yes, he wanted to see Fleur."
"Me?" Fleur looked at him.
"You." Reid nodded.
Fleur smiled and quickly ran to Elijah's room,"You're awake!"
"Very much awake." Elijah chuckled.
"Oh thank god." Fleur hugged him, pulling away for a second before slapping his arm.
"Hey-" Elijah held his arm.
"You idiot. You had me crying." Fleur sighed.
"I'm sorry, darling." Elijah shook his head,"It was just water, I wasn't thinking."
"I'm just glad you're okay." Fleur sat down.
"I am now." Elijah nodded,"And I asked him."
"You- What did he say?" Fleur smiled.
"He said yes." Elijah hummed.
"Elijah! Congratulations." Fleur clapped her hands.
Elijah smiled at her before his face dropped,"Okay, good news done. Time for the not-so-good news, I need you to break me out of here."
"Break you out of the hospital?"
"Yes, I need to go get James." Elijah nodded.
"No. You're not getting him yourself." Fleur shook her head.
"Fleur, please he.." Elijah stopped himself.
Fleur looked at Elijah,"What?"
"He.. Raped me." Elijah looked away.
Fleur blinked, standing up from her seat as she left the room.
"Fleur?" Elijah asked quietly.
After a minute, Fleur came back with a wheelchair,"Get dressed then get on. We'll get him together."
"You are a goddess." Elijah pointed as he got out of bed, holding onto the side for stability.
"Are you sure you can do this? I can go after him."
"I'm fine." Elijah pointed as he pulled on his jumper,"I need to do this."
"We'll do it together." Fleur assured him.
Elijah nodded as he got dressed as quickly as he could before sitting in the wheelchair.
"Right. You're my lookout." Fleur walked out of the room.
Elijah looked around,"We're clear."
Fleur quickly turned, walking to the lifts.
"We're so sneaky." Elijah giggled.
"Very sneaky indeed." Fleur hummed.
"Come on, we've got a job to do." Elijah nodded, clearing his throat.
Fleur pressed the button in the elevator before the doors closed.
"So, where to first?"
"Well, James works at the bar."
"Morgan would've called if they got him there." Fleur shook her head.
"Where the hell would the bastard try and hide?" Elijah sighed.
"You know him best, unfortunately."
Elijah sat quietly as the elevator door opened,"McCleans. It's the party spot we all went to.. He'll be near there."
Fleur nodded slowly, "Okay. We can take my car." She walked out with him.
"Escape succesful." Elijah whispered.
Fleur chuckled as she ran with the wheelchair. Elijah giggled as they hurried to her car.
*********************************
"Okay.. We're here." Fleur stopped the car.
"He won't get away this time." Elijah shook his head.
"Let's go." Fleur got out.
Elijah nodded and got out as well, a hand on his holster as they entered the club.
"You're okay." Fleur reminded him.
"I'll feel much better once we get him." Elijah sighed, looking around.
"Where is he.." Fleur looked around.
"Right there." Elijah nodded to the bar, James had caught his eye.
"Want me to go first?"
Elijah nodded, he didn't want James to know he was here just yet.
Fleur nodded, walking forward,"Hi.. I heard you're the man to go to for.. You know."
"Oh, I'm known for a lot of things." James turned to look at Fleur, leaning in closer,"What are you interested in?"
Fleur leaned over the bar,"The pills."
James nodded slowly,"I'm going to need to see some money first, sweetness."
"Can we do it in the back? I don't like doing my business upfront." Fleur hummed.
"I suppose so." James looked between Fleur and the door.
Fleur hummed and walked behind the bar, giving Elijah a look as she walked through the door. Elijah nodded as he walked forward, slowly pulling out his gun.
"So what made you want to do this?" Fleur went through her bag, looking for 'money'.
"The drugs? Well, I find them easy enough and selling them is just as easy." James shrugged.
Fleur hummed,"Do you ever do anything with them?"
"I don't do them often." James shook his head.
"I mean.. Do you ever use them on anyone?"
"You mean like.. Slipping it into their drinks." James nodded slowly as he turned around,"You're not here for drugs, are you princess?"
Fleur smiled,"No. I'm here because of what you did to my brother."
"Not ringing any bells, dear."
"Elijah."
"Aw, my Eli has a little sister? Now he didn't mention you." James hummed.
"He didn't need to. You're under arrest James Boese."
"Even in the FBI, he's still relying on other people." James shook his head,"How's hospital treating him?"
"It's treating me very well." Elijah walked in, gun raised.
"Hey brother." Fleur smiled.
"Hello sister." Elijah looked over at her.
"You know Elijah.. You can't get me for anything that happened back then." James told him.
"It doesn't matter. He'll get justice." Fleur grabbed her cuffs.
"You used to love these." James held his wrists out,"You never liked it gentle."
"That's enough. You have the right to remain silent." Fleur cuffed James, tightening it.
James winced but he maintained his smirk,"Oh, this takes me back."
"Shut your mouth." Elijah shook his head.
"Come on." Fleur pulled him out of the room.
Elijah followed, putting his gun away.
"I know you miss me, love. Is it bad that I wanted us to get back together?" James asked.
"Ignore him, Eli." Fleur muttered.
"You'll always be my Eli-"
"Okay, listen here. I am not 'Your Eli'. I never was and never will be yours." Elijah snapped at James.
Fleur patted Elijah's back before she put James in the back of her car.
"I hate him." Elijah paced, shaking his head.
"You did great. He's arrested." Fleur assured him.
Elijah nodded slowly,"Do you think I should call the others?"
"Let them know." Fleur nodded.
"Can I, uh, have your phone?" Elijah asked,"I left mine back at the hospital."
"Take it. You know the code." Fleur handed it to him.
"Thank you." Elijah sighed before calling Reid.
After a few rings, he answered.
"Oh my god- Fleur. Where are you and Elijah? You just disappeared!"
"Uhm.. Hi baby." Elijah chuckled nervously.
"Elijah? Where are you?" Reid asked.
"McCleans.. We got James."
"You did? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Elijah sighed,"Please tell me you guys didn't freak out too much."
"Well.. Rossi might've nearly called the cops."
"He nearly- Put him on the phone."
After a second, Rossi took the phone,"Son?"
"Dad, I'm okay." Elijah assured him.
"What happened?"
"Before or right now?"
"Both." Rossi sighed.
"Uh... Long story short, an old friend drugged me and Fleur and I just arrested him." Elijah explained.
"You're okay though?"
"Don't worry, I'm physically okay." Elijah nodded.
"Mentally?"
".. I'm physically okay."
Rossi sighed,"We'll meet you at the station."
"I'll see you there, dad."
"You ready?" Fleur walked over.
"I'm ready." Elijah nodded, handing her the phone.
*********************************
Elijah sighed as he walked inside his house. He just wanted a shower, he wanted to get rid of James..
"So.. I was thinking for now, why don't I wear the ring on me like a necklace?" Reid suggested.
"I think it would look nice on you." Elijah smiled softly.
"I feel bad.." Reid sighed.
"Why?"
"Because you don't have a ring."
"I don't need a ring." Elijah took his hand,"I know you love me regardless."
"But it's not fair. You deserve a ring."
Elijah kissed his cheek,"Reid, it's alright. Honest."
"Still."
"Look, I'm going to go for a shower. We can talk about this later, alright?"
"Okay.. I love you, Elijah." Reid smiled.
"I love you too, Reid." Elijah hummed as he walked to the bathroom.
After a few minutes, Reid was sat in the bedroom waiting for Elijah. He was worried in case he had relapsed again.. But Elijah walked in, wearing short-sleeved pyjamas and sat beside Reid, leaning against him. The only scars on his arms were old.
Reid smiled at Elijah,"Well done." He kissed his head.
"I.. I tried to get him off me and I couldn't. I wanted to but.. I thought of you." Elijah looked up at Reid.
Reid nodded,"I'm proud of you."
"I don't think I'll sleep tonight." Elijah sighed.
"Well, I'm here." Reid assured him,"And I always will be."
"Thank you, darling." Elijah kissed his cheek.
"Good night, Eli." Reid hummed.
"Good night, Spencer." Elijah leaned into his arms, closing his eyes.
