Chapter 38 - Memoriam
"Are you sure they'll let us stay this late?" Elijah asked.
"Doctor Norman said we could. Besides, it's only for one night." Reid assured him as they walked to Diana.
"I'm very proud of you boys." Diana told them.
"For what?" Reid blinked.
"Saving that little boy."
"How'd you know?"
"She told us, remember? A mother knows." Elijah hummed.
Reid chuckled,"Dr Norman gave us permission to sleep in the family room tonight.. If that's okay with you."
"If anyone tries to keep them in here any longer, I'll scratch your eyes out." Diana glared up at Doctor Norman.
".. One night only." Norman pointed and walked off.
"It helps if they think you're crazy. They don't argue." Diana hummed.
Reid smiled, sitting down with Elijah,"A game of chess?"
"You know full well I can't play chess." Elijah chuckled, ruffling his hair.
"You can try anything." Diana pointed.
"I suppose I can." Elijah nodded slowly.

The next day the team were waiting for everyone in the lobby. Morgan was playing the slot machine,"Come on baby. Give it to me!"
"Morgan, can you.. Please can you.. My head." Emily held her head as she sat down.
"My bad, sorry." Morgan chuckled as he got up from the machine.
"You know these things are rigged, right?" Fleur pointed.
"Late night?" Rossi looked at Emily.
"I hate Vegas." Emily sighed.
"Come on, Prentiss. How can you hate Vegas?" Morgan asked,"It's a grown-folks playground."
"Anyone seen Reid or Elijah?" Fleur asked.
"I know they stayed with Reid's mom last night." Morgan nodded.
"They should be here by now. They know the departure time." JJ sighed before turning to the slot machine Morgan had been using,"Hey, this thing still has credit-"
"JJ, I swear to god." Emily pointed.
"What?"
Fleur made some hand movements, gesturing to Emily drinking and feeling hungover.
Morgan chuckled before noticing Reid and Elijah enter,"Hey, here they are right now. What did you do, sleep through your alarm?"
"Sorry to keep you guys waiting." Reid sighed.
"Hotch is already at the airstrip. How fast can you pack?" JJ asked.
"Actually, we're gonna stay for a couple of days." Reid nodded slowly.
"Is everything alright?" Rossi raised a brow.
"Yeah, I just.. Wanna see my mom. It's been a long time since I've seen her and it's only for a few more days." Reid explained.
"Are you sure?"
"We're sure." Elijah rested his head on Reid's shoulder.
"Okay, take a few days. Do what you need to do." Rossi nodded.
"Hey, take care of yourselves." JJ pointed to them as the other started to leave.
"You two. Both of you." Reid nodded to JJ's bump.
JJ gave Reid a smile before she walked off.
"Don't do nothing I wouldn't do." Fleur turned to Elijah.
"I'll be good. Honest." Elijah assured her.
Fleur rubbed his arm before she left with the others.
*********************************
Reid and Elijah headed back to Reid's hotel room, a box of police evidence in hand. Although, when they got to the door, they could hear the TV inside.
Reid looked at Elijah,"Did you leave it on?"
"No, I made sure it was off." Elijah shook his head.
Reid gently opened the door, tilting his head. Inside was Rossi, Fleur and Morgan.
"What are you guys doing here?" Reid asked as he and Elijah walked in, sitting the box down.
"Hey. What's it look like we're doing?" Morgan ate some popcorn.
"Uh, breaking into my room and watching 'Days of our Lives'?" Reid raised a brow.
"It's 'Young and the restless'." Elijah pointed.
"Aren't you supposed to be on a plane back to D.C?"
"And you two are supposed to be with Diana." Fleur tilted her head.
"And you're not." Morgan nodded before pointing to the box,"Riley Jenkins?"
"No that's- No. That's actually not why I'm here." Reid stepped in front of the box.
"Reid." Elijah sighed,"Who do you think you're talking to?"
"I know what this has been doing to you." Morgan stood up.
"Let us help." Rossi looked over at him,"Maybe together we can find out who killed him."
"I think I might already know." Reid admitted.
"So tell us about the suspect." Fleur nodded.
"The truth is, I don't know anything about him." Reid bit his cheek,"He's my father."
"Your father?" Fleur blinked.
Reid nodded as he began taking the files out of the box.
"Before we go down this road, you need to be sure." Elijah crossed his arms.
"He's right. Some rocks don't need looking under." Morgan sighed.
"My mind is sending me signals. I can't ignore them anymore." Reid shook his head.
"Mixed signals. That's what the subconscious is all about, you know that." Rossi sighed.
"Reid, your dad left you. You take it to the Freudian extreme, you could say that he killed your childhood." Elijah put a hand on Reid's shoulder.
"It could explain a dream in which you see him as a murderer." Fleur shrugged.
"I've come this far, I'm not going back." Reid told them.
"So start from the beginning." Fleur sat down.
"Riley was six at the time. His father, Lou Jenkins, was supposed to pick him up from T-ball practice at 4:00, but he got delayed at work, prompting Riley to walk the three blocks home. When his mother got home in the early evening, she found him dead in the basement." Reid explained.
"So the offender came to the house after the boy arrived home." Rossi read through the file.
"Or picked him up on the way there." Elijah added.
"Coaxes Riley into the basement where he sexually assaults him." Fleur sighed.
"The boy's mouth was taped shut." Rossi pointed out.
"Symbolic. The UnSub fears Riley will talk, panics, weighs his options.." Reid began.
"Decides to make certain that he'll never talk." Morgan shook his head.
"He finds a knife in the fishing gear under the stairs, stabs Riley nine times in the chest. Stuffs him behind the washing machine." Rossi finished.
"So, the Unsubs a white male in his late 20s to early 30s." Reid nodded.
"It means we're looking for a man in his 50s." Fleur pointed.
"He likely knew the boy, maybe been to his house." Morgan sat down.
"Neighbour?"
Reid nodded slowly, looking down at a map.
"Reid, what is it?" Elijah asked.
"My family lived less than half a mile from the Jenkins." Reid tilted his head.
"Do you think your dad knew the boy?" Rossi raised a brow.
"I don't know. My memory is.. The lack of recall just reinforces how little I knew about him." Reid shook his head.
"Reid, we're gonna need to track him down. You do know that." Morgan reminded him.
"We should talk to my mother first, neighbours, get their impressions." Reid looked down.
"Reid, I don't need to tell you that this signature was need-based an sexual in nature. The man we're looking for is a pedophile." Elijah crossed his arms,"So I'll ask you again, are you sure you want to go down this road?"
*********************************
After they had visited Riley Jenkins' father, they managed to get the address of where William Reid's office was. Only ten minutes away.
"Can I help you?" The receptionist asked as they walked in.
"Yeah.." Reid tried to speak but.. He couldn't.
"We'd like to speak with William Reid." Elijah put a hand on Reid's shoulder.
"Is he expecting you?" The receptionist asked.
"I don't think so." He took out his badge, showing her.
"Well, he's in a meeting right now so why don't you have a seat and I'll tell him you're here." She nodded before walking off.
Reid was licking his lips, he was starting to breathe quicker.
"Are you alright?" Elijah asked him.
"Yeah.. No, yeah. I'm going to go to the bathroom." Reid sped off.
"I've never seen him like this." Fleur sighed.
"Seventeen years is a long time to go between visits." Rossi nodded.
"Not long enough. Kids still angry." Morgan shook his head.
"Yeah, I'm starting to get that." Elijah crossed his arms.
"I'll be right back." William nodded as he walked out an office,"You're from the FBI?"
"Yes, sir, Mr Reid. I'm Agent Rossi. These are Agents Morgan, Howards and Deans." Rossi turned to him.
"Oh- He's ugly." Elijah whispered to Fleur.
"Agreed." Fleur muttered.
"This wouldn't be about the City Council investigation, would it?" William blinked.
"No, this is more of a personal matter." Rossi shook his head.
"It comcerns your son." Elijah nodded.
"My son? Did something happen?" William asked as Reid walked back over.
"That's what we're trying to find out.' Reid paused,"..Hello dad."
"Why don't.. We go to my office." William shook his head, walking towards it.
The agents looked between each other before walking inside William's office. When they got there and sat down, Reid instead stood and made sure he was quite far from William.
"You don't look like me anymore. You used to. Everyone used to say so." William nodded to the others.
"They say some people look like their dogs, too. It's attributed to prolonged, mutual exposure. Elderly couples, also. They unconsciously mimic the expressions of people they've been around their whole life, so it kind of makes sense that I wouldn't really look like you. I haven't seen you in twenty years." Reid ranted.
William just looked at his son,"So are you in town on work?"
"We're just wrapping up a case." Rossi nodded.
"A five year old boy was abducted and murdered." Fleur told him.
"I read about that. Ethan Hayes, right?" William looked around,"That's terrible."
"Yeah.. That case got me thinking about Riley Jenkins. You remember Riley Jenkins?" Reid asked.
"Of course."
"I've been having dreams about him for a really long time. But when I came back here for this case, it jogged something and the dream changed. I saw his killer and it was you." Reid explained.
"Interesting dream." William nodded.
"You don't seem all that surprised." Elijah pointed.
"I stopped being suprised by Spencer's mind a long time ago." William shrugged.
"There are certain criteria we consider when looking at this type of suspect. You fit parts of that profile." Rossi told him.
"Me?"
"We just want your cooperation." Elijah assured him.
"My-" William laughed,"My cooperation? You're not actually saying that you think I killed Riley Jenkins."
"We didn't say that." Reid shrugged.
"Good, because that's absurd." William scoffed.
"We'd just like permission to look through your computer, access your records." Morgan nodded.
"What would you be looking for exactly?" William leaned forward,"You want access to my files, get a warrant."
"No problem." Fleur crossed her arms.
*********************************
"Was the envelope dropped off at the front desk first?" Rossi asked as he looked at the file Reid handed him.
"Nope. It went straight to my room." Reid shook his head.
"So, they knew what room you were in." Elijah nodded slowly.
"I do have to admit. The timing of it is suspicious." Fleur pointed.
"Yeah. An hour after I see my father, we're handed another suspect." Reid crossed his arms.
"You think you knew this guy?" Rossi looked up.
"I don't know. I think so, but I'm not sure. I... No, I don't know." Reid stammered.
"Exposed himself to a minor. That's a precursor to molestation." Fleur looked at the file.
"And murder. We should take a closer look at this guy." Morgan pointed as his phone rang,"It's Garcia. Yeah, talk to me, babygirl."
"I'm not interrupting boy and Frenchie time at Cracy House Too, am I?" Garcia asked.
"You know thats not my thing. I'm more for in-room entertainment." Morgan told her.
"I can't help you there but I do give good phone."
"Let me hear what you've got." Morgan nodded.
"Reid, we've been all up in your father's business." Garcia hummed.
"What did you find?" Reid asked quickly.
"Well, let me tell you first what I did not find. No kiddie porn, no memberships to illicit websites, no dubious emails, no chat room history." Garcia listed.
"What about his finances?"
"We went back ten years. No questionable transactions that we could find." Hotch shook his head.
"Well, he did buy a ticket to see Céline Dion six months ago, but I think we can overlook that." Emily told them.
"He's smart. Is it possible he kept things under the table?" Reid suggested.
"Well, of course. But from what we can tell, Reid, he doesn't fit the profile." Hitch shook his head.
"We can tell you other things about him if you want to know." Emily sighed
Reid nodded,"I'm listening."
"He's a workaholic. He actually logs more hours than we do. He makes decent money but he doesn't spend a lot of it. He has a modest house, he drives a hybrid. He doesn't travel much, he stays away from casinos. And according to his veterinary bills, he has a very sick cat." Emily listed.
"He appears to spend most of his free time alone, and goes to the movies a lot and he reads." Hotch added,"And from his collection of first editions, it seems his favorite author is-"
"Issac Asimov. I remember that one." Reid nodded.
"He does have one other major interest. On his home computer, he's archived, like, a gajillion things on one common subject." Garcia told him.
"What?"
"You, kiddo." Garcia smiled softly,"He's got like everything that's been published online. Every article that you've been quoted in, pieces you've written for behavioral science journals. He even has a copy of your dissertation."
"He's keeping tabs on you. That's saying something." Fleur shrugged.
"Yeah, that he Googled me. That makes up for everything. I'm- I need some air." Reid shook his head as he walked off.
"Reid." Elijah sighed, following him.
Reid shook his head,"Elijah, can you just-"
"Reid, you need to calm down." Elijah pointed.
"I am calm." Reid scoffed.
"I am calm." Reid scoffed.
"You're not." Elijah crossed his arms,"I get it. Your dad is an asshole. I just don't think he did this."
"But I saw him- I'm never wrong."
"You saw him in a dream, Reid. You can't convict a man with that."
Reid sighed,"..Can I be alone right now?"
"Fine, just.. Don't do anything stupid." Elijah shook his head.
Reid shook his head and walked off. Elijah sighed and headed back to the others.
*********************************
"Thank you for seeing us on such short notice." Reid looked up at Dr Mohikian as she walked in.
"Well, I'm always happy to assist the FBI. Is there a witness you want me to look at?" She asked.
"Yeah.. Me. I'm trying to recover memories from my childhood. There was a murder." Reid sighed.
"How long ago are we talking about?"
"I was four."
"Memories from that age can be difficult to interpret." Dr Mohikian sighed.
"I'm aware of the limitations of hypnotherapy." Reid nodded.
"Well, then you're aware of the suggestion issues. If you've looked into this case, you may have a bias." She told him.
"Are you saying what he remembers under hypnosis may not be real?" Rossi asked.
"It's a possibility. Either way, it's a tough sell in court." She sighed.
"It's really just for me. The suppressed memories are about my father." Reid admitted.
"We'd like to monitor the session, make sure you get him to the right place." Elijah spoke up.
"You want to sit in? I don't normally allow that." Dr Mohikian shook her head.
"Well, in case you haven't noticed, nothing about this is normal." He sighed.
*********************************
"It could've been me." Reid shook his head as he walked down the street.
"Reid, I love Diana but she is not stable. You can't put stock into what she says. I don't need to tell you that." Elijah sighed.
"And I don't need to tell you this is textbook. Father reroutes compulsion to molest away from his own son to a surrogate." Reid told him.
"She thought Riley Jenkins was an imaginary friend until you told her otherwise." Elijah pointed.
"Her mind's way of suppressing memories she doesn't want to face." Reid shrugged.
"You're looking objectivity here, babe." Elijah stopped walking.
"Look, I'm not trying to say that I know what happened or how my dad's involved, Elijah, but he is." Reid sighed.
"That's exactly what you're saying." Elijah muttered.
That's when Lou Jenkins walked out of the police station, a file in hand, and walked off to his car.
"What's he doing here?" Reid tilted his head.
"Good question." Elijah turned to the station.
"Let's go inside."
Elijah nodded and they headed inside where Reid attempted to get the Detective to arrest his father.
"You got no evidence." The Detective shrugged.
"A suspect can be detained for questioning for 48 hours, regardless of evidence." Reid told him.
"I'm not in the habit of ruining people's reputation on a whim." The Detecive sighed.
"Where's your Captain?" Reid asked,"I want to talk to your Captain."
"Talk all you want. This was a local murder and your authority ends at the state line." He pointed as he got up,"Look, why don't you just head back over to Fountainview, have a couple of drinks with your buddy by the pool and think about this?"
"I have thought about this." Reid shook his head.
"The guy's your father."
"What's your point, Detective?"
"Maybe you're here to work out some other issues." The Detecive hummed.
"Okay, listen, Detective." Elijah stepped forward, stopping Reid as he rose from his seat,"Look, we would consider it a personal favour if you helped us out with this. We just want him on his heels."
The Detective sighed,"You got twenty four hours."
"I appreciate that." Elijah nodded.
Reid sighed and walked out, shaking his head.
Elijah followed him out,"Reid, you've got to keep your head, darling."
"He could've just agreed to it, it happens all the time."
"You know how these guys are. They just want to feel like they're the ones in control." Elijah sighed as his phone rang before picking it up,"Talk to me, Garcia."
"So this Gary Micheals the others wanted me to track down seems to have pulled himself right off the grid." Garcia sighed.
"What did he do? Skip town?" Elijah raised a brow.
"Feels it. Maybe he even took a new name too. Because everything in his name lapsed from non-use in the year after the Riley Jenkins case."
"Maybe he didn't want to stick around for the investigation." Elijah nodded.
"In addition go the indecent exposure rap, he also had some sealed juvenile stuff. Lewd behaviour, trespassing.." JJ listed.
"Trespassing?"
"At a nursery school." JJ sighed.
"It's hard to believe the cops never pegged this guy as a suspect." Todd spoke up.
"Any other avenues to find him?" Elijah asked.
"You betcha. They swabbed him in '85 for the exposure beef, so I'm sending up balloons through ViCAP and CODIS." Garcia hummed.
"If he's offended again over the past twenty years under a different name.." JJ began.
"Which considering his type, he probably has." Garcia shrugged.
"He will pop up somewhere." JJ finished.
"Alright, keep me in the loop." Elijah sighed as he hung up.
*********************************
"Who else was with you?" Morgan asked as he, Elijah and Reid interviewed Lou Jenkins.
"No one." Lou answered.
"You're saying you killed Gary Micheals by yourself? All alone." Morgan blinked.
"That's right."
"And William Reid wasn't a party to this?" Elijah raised a brow.
"No."
"You're lying." Reid crossed his arms.
"I'm not lying." Lou shook his head.
"He was burning bloody clothes. I saw him." Reid pointed.
"What makes you think Gary Micheals killed your boy?" Morgan questioned.
"He admitted it." Lou nodded.
"You beat a guy with a baseball bat, he's going to admit to a lot of things." Elijah sighed,"How do you know he was the right guy?"
"I know. He approached another kid in the neighbourhood." Lou looked towards Reid as he went to leave.
"And how do you know that?" Morgan asked.
"I was told by a concerned party."
"Who? Another parent?" Elijah raised a brow.
"That's all I'm going to say on the subject." He sighed.
"Who was it?" Reid asked, walking back towards the table.
"I told you. That's all I'm going to say on the-"
"Who was it?" Reid raised his voice.
"Agent Reid." The Detective walked in.
"Do not interfere with this interrogation, Detective." Reid pointed,"This is not your case anymore!"
That's when Diana walked out from behind the Detective, William beside her,"It was me, Spencer."
"Why don't we go to a room and talk? All three of us." William suggested.
Reid nodded slowly, walking out of the room with his parents.
*********************************
William and Diana were sitting in the office after Reid left. They had figured out the truth about the Riley Jenkins murder.
"Excuse me, Mr and Mrs Reid?" Elijah knocked on the door as he opened it.
"Yes- Oh Elijah." Diana smiled,"This is Spencer's boyfriend." She told William.
"Yes, uh.. That's what I wanted to talk to you both about." Elijah nodded as he closed the door behind him.
"Oh no. Don't tell me you're breaking up."
"No- Never." Elijah quickly shook his head,"Quite the opposite, actually."
"What?" William raised a brow.
"I'm going to marry your son- Not yet, obviously. But I'm going to."
"You want to.. Marry Spencer?" William blinked.
"I do, sir." Elijah nodded.
"Are you sure?"
"Oh, I am very sure."
"Why?"
"Because I love him." Elijah crossed his arms,"He's there for me, and I do my best to be there for him. I'm not the smartest.. But I care about him, a lot."
"Oh, of course. Don't worry, of course you can marry Spencer." Diana smiled.
"Trust me, I was probably going to do it anyway. Even if you both said no." Elijah admitted.
"Well, I hope you enjoy it while it lasts." William crossed his arms.
"It will last a long time, sir." Elijah pointed as he opened the door,"Just you wait and see."
"I'm sure." William nodded.
"It was a pleasure seeing you again, Diana." Elijah smiled as her before he left.
*********************************
After they had figured out the truth, the remaining Agents got on the plane to go home.
"Eli?" Reid walked up to him on the plane.
"Hm?" Elijah looked up at him.
"Can we.. Can we talk?"
"Of course, what's up?"
"I wanted to apologise for.. Being snappy at you.' Reid sighed.
"It's alright, I understand. The case was personal to you, I didn't listen to you." Elijah shook his head.
"No, it was my fault. I was too invested."
"Neither of us were running on any sleep. We were tired and.. Well, we're still tired but we didn't listen to each other."
"I'm sorry." Reid sighed.
"Look, just come here." Elijah held his arms open.
Reid hugged Elijah, holding him close.
Elijah smiled as he closed his eyes,"I feel better now."
"I'm glad."
"Now sleep, okay?" Elijah hummed.
"You sleep first." He chuckled.
"Oh, we are not getting into this again."
"You sleep and we'll be fine."
"Hey, my eyes are closed." Elijah sighed as he leaned into Reid's shoulder,"It's your turn."
Reid watched Elijah for a second before he nodded, closing his eyes.
"Thank you." Elijah mumbled.
