Chapter 37 - The Instincts

"Elijah?" Fleur asked over the phone.

"Yes?" Elijah hummed.

"I'm picking you up, okay?" Fleur nodded.

"Of course."

"And.. I'm bringing sweet treats."

"Oh, thank you." Elijah smiled.

"Arriving in five." Fleur hummed, hanging up.

Elijah nodded and began putting his shoes on.

A few minutes later, he heard a beep from outside.

"I'm coming." Elijah grabbed his house keys as he walked out the door.

Horatio loudly meowed as he left the house. Elijah sighed as he headed towards Fleur's car and got inside.

"Right." Fleur looked at him,"We need to talk."

"Oh dear, what have I done?" Elijah sighed.

"We both.. Relived a bunch of tramua the other week."

"Yeah.. Yeah, we did."

"And I know what you did." Fleur sighed,"And I know you know what happened when I got home. But we're both okay now."

Elijah crossed his arms,"I'm sorry.. You know that, right?"

"You don't need to be." Fleur kissed his cheek,"Now, eat your croissant."

"Thank you for the croissant." Elijah smiled softly.

"Theres plenty more." Fleur assured him.

"And I'm glad."

"Ready to go?" Fleur took a croissant.

"I'm ready." Elijah nodded.

"Onwards." Fleur hummed.

Elijah was flipping through his notebook on the jet as Reid slept beside him.

"Is he okay?" Morgan looked over.

Elijah looked over at Reid, mumbling in his sleep.

"Darling?" Elijah gently put a hand on his shoulder.

"Hm?" Reid blinked and sat up, rubbing his eyes,"Sorry I was dreaming."

"I could tell." Elijah stroked his hair.

"We found a six year old boy who had been abused and stabbed. Your baby was at the crime scene." Reid pointed to JJ,"I was trying to get him out of there.. Sorry."

"It's okay." JJ shook her head.

"You know, Reid simple dream analysis, if there's a baby in your dreams the babies actually you." Morgan pointed.

"I don't belive in dream analysis." Reid told him.

"I don't know, it makes sense. The case we're working on and the case in your dream both involve children. Maybe your subconscious is telling you what you want to sit this one out." Hotch shrugged.

"I don't." Reid insisted.

"Well maybe you're just stressed out about going home to Las Vegas. Did you tell your mom you're coming?" Fleur asked.

"Why aren't we reviewing the case file?" Reid asked.

"I don't know, maybe because someone fell asleep on the jet." Elijah gently nudged him.

"Alright. Let's start one more time from the beginning." Hotch clapped his hands.

"This is Ethan Hayes, he was five. Two weeks ago, he was abducted from his own front yard." JJ showed a picture.

"Where were his parents?" Reid looked at the picture of the young boy.

"His mom just ran inside to grab her purse. When she came back, he was gone. She couldn't have been gone for more than a minute or two. Police found his body exactly a week later in the desert." JJ explained,"He was in a new change of clothes. His nails were clipped. His hair was combed."

"The medical report suggests he was smothered. UnSub could see his death as merciful." Hotch explained.

"Who's the new boy?" Emily asked.

"Micheal Bridges. Yesterday he set out to walk by himself to a friends house a block away. He never showed up." JJ sighed.

"Are we sure these cases are even connected?" Reid raised a brow.

"The UnSub called each of the families. But no ransom demand." Rossi shook his head.

"It's more like taunts. He's telling them it's their fault that their child was taken." Elijah sighed.

"Okay, so we have an UnSub who shows remorse and the projects his guilt onto the victims parents." Morgan nodded.

"And if we're lucky, six days to find the boy before he's killed." Hotch added.

The two couples went to the morgue to inspect the body that was found.

The M.E took the body out of the freezer,"There was no bruising around his neck or face. I'm guessing he used a pillow."

"Is there any evidence of a struggle?" Reid asked.

"No, but he would have been extremely weak." He shook his head.

"Why is that?" Morgan raised a brow.

"This is where it gets weird. He was getting noticably thin. And both his stomach and intestines were completely empty."

"He was being starved?" Elijah nodded slowly.

"It seems that way."

"Okay, so what's the weird part?" Morgan crossed his arms.

"I wanted to determine if malnutrition had played a part in his death. So I looked for evidence of starvation ketosis by analysing some vitreous humor- the squishy part of the eyeball. And I couldn't find any ketone bodies there."

"Meaning?" Fleur tilted her head.

"He was getting nutrients somehow." Reid realised.

"Through an IV?" Morgan suggested.

"There are no marks to indicate that." He shook his head.

"Do you have any idea what else it could be?" Elijah asked.

"Honestly? I have no idea." The M.E sighed.

The four of them headed inside the Bridges house where Hotch and JJ were talking to the parents.

"Garcia, anything?" Hotch asked.

"It looks to be a disposable cell phone. I couldn't triangulate the call, but it did bounce off not one, but two towers." Garcia told him.

"Meaning?"

"I know he's mobile, and I know he's moving with Las Vegas limits. He didn't travel outside the city." Garcia explained.

"It's just a start. Like I said, the more he talks the more we'll learn from him." Hotch assured them.

JJ then turned, seeing the others walk in,"These are Agents Howards, Morgan, Deans and Reid. They will be here all night, just in case he calls back."

"I will?" Elijah whispered.

"Apparently." Fleur sighed.

"I need to lie down." Amy, Michael's mother, got up.

"Of course." Hotch nodded as she walked away.

"You should go with her." JJ nodded to the father, Craig.

"Yeah." Craig walled after her.

"What'd you find out from the Medical Examiner?" Hotch turned towards the couples

"We think that he's starving them." Reid told him.

"But that doesn't fit with the care he takes with the bodies. Starvation would be a form of torture." Fleur shrugged.

"There's no sexual assault. The torture could be a substitute for the sex act." Morgan pointed.

"I'll coordinate with Prentiss and Rossi. We'll call you if there's anything new." Hotch and JJ left.

"Yes, a sleepover." Elijah smiled.

*********************************

Everyone was downstairs. They were getting some sleep or just relaxing to make sure everything was okay. Until Reid began shouting.

"Elijah! Get them off of me!"

Elijah hurried to Reid's side, gently shaking him,"Reid! Reid, wake up. It's me, it's Elijah."

"Get them off!" Reid shouted, Morgan putting the light on while Fleur ran over.

"Reid." Elijah ran his fingers through his hair.

"What the hell's going on?" Craig asked as he and Amy came downstairs.

"Sir, ma'am. Everything's okay." Fleur walked over to them.

"You wake us up screaming and you think this is okay?" He questioned.

"I understand we startled you and I'm sorry for that." Fleur sighed.

"You're the FBI." Craig pointed.

"You're right. I'm really sorry." Fleur shook her head,"Please go back and try to get some rest. It was just a misunderstanding, I promise you."

Craig shook his head, walking upstairs as Elijah rubbed Reid's back.

"Are you okay?" Amy asked.

"It was just a dream, I'm really sorry." Reid sighed.

"Was it about Michael?"

"No." Reid shook his head.

"I've been afraid to close my eyes." Amy admitted,"I'm scared I'll see him die."

"Ma'am, I know it's hard. But I need you to go upstairs and try to get some sleep. Please. I'm sorry for the disturbance." Fleur sighed.

Amy looked back at the group before she walked upstairs, turning off the light.

"I'm making everything worse." Reid muttered.

"Reid, these cases get to all of us." Elijah sighed.

"I'm losing it in their living room. And I'm dreaming- I'm dreaming about dead kids and being covered in leeches."

"What the hell is scaring you?" Elijah shook his head.

"This boys going to die and there's nothing I can do to stop it." Reid sighed.

"Now, you don't know that." Elijah pulled him closer,"We're all going to save him."

*********************************

The team had a suspect, a man named Walter, who they caught filming the funeral of Ethan Hayes. They had him in custody and Fleur and Elijah were interrogating him.

"Where were you on the days Ethan Hayes and Micheal Bridges were abducted?" Fleur asked.

"I was at home." Walter answered.

"Don't you need to ask what those days are?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Am I under arrest?" Walter sighed.

"No, you love kids. You're just helping us with an investigation." Eliiah shrugged.

"So you have no right to search me." Walter told them.

"Why? What would we find?" Elijah crossed his arms.

"Oh?" Fleur walked forward,"Do you like videotaping things other than funerals?"

"Where is Michael Bridges?" Elijah asked.

"You're trying to frame me." Walter shook his head.

"You killed Ethan Hayes and you're holding Michael Bridges." Elijah pointed.

"No."

"Then why were you videotaping a funeral? Does death excite you? Oh wait.. That's it. Death gets you off." Fleur scoffed.

"I told you, I don't touch." Walter insisted.

"No, you just kill them and find new ways to watch them afterwards." Elijah spat.

"I am not sick."

"I think you are. And I think you desperately want to tell us exactly how sick you are, isn't that right Walter? You want us to search your computer and your home because this is eating you up inside and you know you need to be stopped." Fleur pointed.

"I never would've molested that boy!" Walter shouted.

"Which boy?" Elijah crossed his arms.

"... The one from the funeral." Walter admitted.

*********************************

In the Bridges' home, the team was listening back to the recording of the phone call made by the Unsub. Although, that's when Michael's parents walked in.

"Would it be possible for us to work in private for a while?" Hotch turned to them.

"He was at the funeral. I told you." Amy insisted.

"He was at the funeral and you arrested the wrong man." Craig pointed.

"I don't think it is a man." Reid spoke up,"Did you hear the way she described the clothing? She said blue shoes, lime green Oxford. A male wouldn't reference specific details like that."

"I think Reid's right. She talked about what the child wanted. How he slept, how she took care of him. She said 'I loved him'." Fleur nodded.

"A male Unsub would've emphasized the competition, not the care-giving." Elijah agreed,"He would've talked about how he's smarter than the FBI, bragged about not getting caught."

"We could have been looking at men and women-" Amy began.

"The statistics are overwhelming. Women abduct newborns, men take children." Rossi shook his head.

"Garcia." Hotch turned to the computer.

"I'm right here, sir."

"Will you run the license plates the police gave you and find any that might be registered to a woman?" Hotch asked.

"That would be.. Zero." Garcia told him.

"How's that possible?" Amy walked to forward.

"The transcript almost reads like she's been institutionalized." Reid nodded slowly.

"You mean she's crazy." Craig sighed.

"Yeah, she's describes herself as being 'locked down', not arrested or put away. Plus, most mental facilities are very rigid about the amount of phone time they allow per day. I think her saying that she only has three minutes isn't her rule to us. It's what she's been institutionalized to think is normal." Reid explained.

"Garcia, can you get us records of women released from mental institutions this past month? She most likely had some tramua in her case file, possibly a death of a child." Rossi sighed.

"I'm sorry, even I can't do that." Garcia shook her head,"To protect patient privilege there's no central database. I could hack into each hospital individually, but even then, most diagnoses are kept separately by the different doctors."

"I think I might have a way." Reid looked up.

*********************************

Reid and Elijah headed to the facility that his mum was staying in, walking into the day room that she was sat in.

"Please just.. Don't panic if she acts out." Reid looked towards Elijah.

"I won't." Elijah assured him.

"Doctor Reid, your mom didn't tell me you were in town." The main doctor, Doctor Norman, walked over and shook Reid's hand.

"She doesn't know I'm here. I'm actually working on a case and I actually thought you might be able to help us. This is SSA Elijah Deans." Reid nodded.

"Of course." Doctor Norman looked between them.

"Have you read about the recent child murder and second abduction?"

"Yes."

"We think the person responsible is a woman. She would've been institutionalised but we believe she may have been released within the past few weeks, just before the first abduction." Reid explained.

"What can I do?" Doctor Norman asked.

"I'm assuming you have a good working relationship with the administrators at other hospitals. I know no one can open their files but if you wouldn't mind, just give them the profile, that would be a tremendous help." Reid shook his head.

"She's delusional, fuelled by grief, most likely lost a child of her own, probably around the age of five." Elijah handed him the file.

"I will see what I can do." Doctor Norman took the file before walking off.

Reid hesitated and looked towards his mother,"Let's go."

"I'm excited." Elijah whispered.

Reid gripped onto Elijah's hand and walked over to his mother, standing in front of her.

"Spencer, what are you doing here?" Diana looked up at them,"Oh, and you've brought a friend."

"Yeah.. We're here for work." Reid crouched down,"We're investigating the murder and abduction of two five year old boys."

"I don't like the idea of you working on things so sad." Diana shook her head.

"Trust me, Ma'am, I don't either." Elijah patted Reid's shoulder.

"I know." Reid chuckled.

"You're so thin." Diana pointed.

Reid bit his cheek,"I was going to come and see you the minute we were done with the case."

"What else is going on in there?" Diana asked.

"Nothing.."

"Don't lie to your mother, Spencer." Elijah nudged him gently.

"You should listen to him. We know. We feel things." Diana pointed.

"... Did I know a boy called Riley Jenkins when I was little?" Reid sighed.

"He was a story you made up." She shook her head.

"No, no. He was a real kid who was murdered when I was four years old." Reid remembered.

"I think you're mistaken."

Reid looked at Elijah before looking down,"I've been seeing things."

"Don't say that." Diana hushed him.

"I've been having dreams about his death since I was little, mom."

"Well, you were always a reader. It affected your dreams."

"I remember when I was four we went to a funeral, right?" Reid began.

"Your uncle Daniel's, maybe." Diana shrugged.

"I also remember we moved houses. You and dad argued about it. You told dad I was in danger." Reid looked at her.

"Because you were." Diana nodded.

"Why- Why did you think that?"

"I don't know. I just knew. I told you. A mother knows." Diana leaned forward,"We're animals, Spencer. We feel things."

"I'm sorry, I talked to nine different hospitals. There's no one who matched your description." Doctor Norman sighed as he walked over.

"Thank you for trying." Elijah nodded, taking the file.

"You know if this person has an axis -1 condition. Her release wouldn't be as important as whether or not she keeps to her medications."

"Right, thank you. Again, thank you very much." Reid looked over at Doctor Norman as he walked off.

"I went off my medication when I was pregnant with you." Diana spoke,"I spent every day in terror, but I made it. And it was beautiful. I had you."

"Oh.. My god." Reid blinked.

"What is it, baby?" Diana asked.

"He's just figured out who our kidnapper is." Elijah nodded slowly.

Reid quickly got up, walking over to the Doctor,"Is it possible for a woman to convince herself that a random five year old is actually her own newborn?"

"If her psychosis is strong enough, and again, if they stopped taking their medication, absolutely." Doctor Norman answered.

"Thanks." Reid nodded slowly.

"Well, it was a pleasure meeting you, Mrs Reid." Elijah smiled at Diana.

"Yes, yes. As it was with you." Diana hummed,"Say, Spencer never actually introduced you."

"Oh, my name is Elijah. Elijah Deans."

Reid walked back over,"Is everything okay?"

Elijah nodded,"I was just introducing myself."

"That actually.. Reminds me." Reid looked at his mother,"Mom, I- We.. Me and Elijah are together."

"Oh, Spencer." Diana shook her head,"A mother knows."

"You're not mad?"

"Why would I be mad?"

"I just thought.. Nevermind." Reid smiled.

"Now you look after him, you hear me?" Diana pointed at Elijah.

"I hear you." Elijah chuckled softly.

"We'll come back later." Reid nodded.

"I look forward to it." Diana told him

*********************************

After they had saved Micheal, Hotch had walked up towards everyone,"I think we're gonna stay in Vegas for the night. Think we can enjoy it?"

"Oh, I don't think. I know I can enjoy it." Morgan pointed.

"I think we should go out." Fleur hummed.

"I agree. If we're in Vegas, we might as well have fun with it." Emily smiled.

"Reid, Elijah?" Fleur turned to them.

"No, I'm.. I'm going back to see my mom." Reid shook his head.

Fleur nodded,"I assume your partner in crime will join you."

"She's so nice." Elijah smiled.

"That's fine. We'll see you tomorrow." Rossi patted their backs.

"Don't have too much fun without us." Elijah hummed.

"We could never." Emily shook her head.

"Have a good night." Reid nodded to them as he and Elijah walked off.
