Chapter 28 - Ganet's Appeal

"Again. I can't believe I'm running late again." Elijah sighed as he hurried to tie his shoes.

"You're always running late now." Fleur laughed on the phone.

"Come on, this is only the second time." Elijah sighed.

"We're not doing anything yet. We're all just chilling." Fleur shrugged.

"Look, I'll be there soon." Elijah shook his head,"Tell Reid that I love him."

"Reid!" Fleur shouted.

"You don't need to shout at him."

"Reid." Fleur whispered.

"Better." Elijah nodded as he grabbed his keys.

"What is it?" He heard Reid ask.

"Elijah says he loves you." Fleur hummed.

"I do." Elijah nodded as he got onto his car.

"See you soon." Fleur hung up.

Elijah sighed, starting his drive to the office.

"Elijah's on his way, don't worry." Fleur turned to the others.

"He sleep in again?" Morgan chuckled.

"Reid didn't wake him up." She nodded.

"I thought he'd be okay." Reid sighed.

"He's okay now. Don't worry." Fleur assured him.

"You told him not to speed, right?" Emily walked over.

"...Totally." Fleur sat down.

"He'll be arrested before he gets here." Morgan shook his head.

"I hope not. I used my last paycheck on some books." Reid sighed,"What's on the news?"

"Let me see." JJ hummed, switching on the TV.

Colarado PD, a serial killer called Benjamin Ganet was going on stand to appeal his sentence. He was on a life sentence but believed he should be free.

"And... Elijah Deans breaks a new record for arriving quickly to work." Elijah hummed as he walked in.

"Morning." Reid smiled.

"What's on?" Elijah gestured to the TV as he sat down.

"This killer wants to appeal. Killed twelve people." Morgan shrugged.

"What-" Elijah paused as he saw the screen,"My god.."

"What?" JJ turned to him.

"I.. I remember that case. He lived on my street." Elijah leaned back in his chair.

"Jesus Christ. How was it to find out it was your neighbour?" Rossi sighed.

"He seemed so normal- I was ten, it was.. Confusing."

"Sorry you had to go through that." He shook his head.

"No- No, I'm good. I just want to make sure he stays in jail." Elijah sighed.

"You lived on his street, maybe you could help with making sure he stays there." Morgan nodded.

"We're going to look at the case?" Elijah looked up at him.

"We can. Anything to keep him in, right?" Emily shrugged.

"Yeah, yeah." Elijah nodded,"Maybe we could check with Garcia, see if she can find anything."

"I can go ahead and ask." Fleur raised from her seat.

Garcia was in her office, several pictures of kitten in costumes on her screen.

"Penny." Fleur skipped in.

"Fleur, hi." Garcia smiled, spinning around in her chair.

"I have a request."

"A request, hm? Well, I do have this one picture of Morgan-"

"No, it's- Wait what?" Fleur walked over.

"Oh- Not that. What do you need?" Garcia asked.

"Can you search up Benjamin Ganet? He was arrested in 1988."

"Of course I can." Garcia hummed as she typed,"Still married to a Stacy Ganet, and he has two sons."

"We got their names? We want to keep this guy in jail. Anything evidence wise can help." Fleur nodded.

"The eldest is called Oliver and-" Garcia stopped,"The younger son's identity is protected."

"Because of his age at the time of the murders?"

"He was ten, some reporters are saying he witnessed the last murder.." Garcia shook her head.

"Jesus." Fleur sighed,"Can you send me the brothers file? Oliver?"

"Of course I can." Garcia typed,"And... Sent! I also sent you the addresses of both Stacy and Oliver."

"You're a godsend, Pen." Fleur smiled.

"Thank you kindly." She hummed.

Fleur ran off to the others,"I got files on Stacy Ganet. She has two sons, one being an Oliver Ganet but the younger son was a minor, so he's protected." She walked back to the room.

"Good, I say we split up." Hotch nodded as he walked over,"Some of us will talk to Stacy and the rest can go speak with Oliver."

"I can go to Oliver." Fleur raised her hand.

"I'll go too." Elijah nodded.

"Prentiss, Reid and I will go to the mother's house." Morgan nodded.

"Which means Hotch and I will come with you two to visit Oliver." Rossi agreed.

"Deal." Fleur hummed.

"Let's get going." Elijah stood up.

"We'll report back eventually." Hotch nodded.

Elijah nodded and headed for the doors, quite quickly. He wanted this case done with as quickly as possible.

"Babe?" Reid ran after him.

"Hm?" Elijah turned.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong."

"You have that eyebrow thing going on."

"Look, the case just brings up some bad memories. It's nothing, really." Elijah sighed.

"I hope it's over quickly. He deserves to stay in jail." Reid nodded.

"I know." Elijah rubbed his arm.

"If you need anything while I'm at the wife's house, let me know."

"I'll make sure to call you." Elijah kissed his cheek,"Now get moving."

"Love you." He smiled.

"Love you too."

Reid hummed, running off as Elijah watched after him, sighing.

*********************************

"This is the place." Rossi looked around as they pulled up outisde of Oliver's house.

"Nice house." Fleur looked at the house.

"Well, let's see if he's just as nice." Elijah shrugged as he knocked on the door.

After a few minutes, the door opened,"Yeah?"

"Oliver Ganet?" Hotch asked.

"That's me.. What is this?" Oliver looked at them.

"We're with the FBI." Elijah took our his badge,"We want to ask you few questions about your father, Benjamin."

"So? He's in jail." Oliver shrugged.

"And he's trying to appeal his sentence." Rossi crossed his arms,"Now, are you going to answer our questions?"

"Yeah.. Come on in." Oliver looked between them all.

Elijah looked around as they walked inside. God, it felt.. So familiar. Like his old home, but much cleaner, well-kept.

"So what do you want to know?" Oliver shrugged.

"Well, how was your father while you were growing up?" Hotch asked.

"I was closer with my mother." Oliver nodded,"My father really favoured my brother the most."

"Well, did you ever see your father.. Get angry with your mother? Was he violent towards others?" Rossi raised a brow.

"It was the other way around. Mum was the violent one towards dad and my brother. He never let his anger out on us." Oliver shrugged.

"What about you? Did she ever hurt you?" Elijah asked.

"On.. Occasions." Oliver sighed.

"Did you look after your little brother? When he was getting hurt by your mother?" Fleur raised a brow.

"No." Oliver answered,"If she caught me, it would've been worse for us both."

"I'm sorry you both had to go through that." Hotch sighed,"Do you talk to your brother now?"

"I.. Last spoke to him when he was thirteen, I moved here before his tenth birthday." Oliver told him.

"Is it alright if you'd tell us his name? Anything to keep your father in jail, your brother was a witness." Fleur shook her head.

"Elijah. His name was Elijah." Oliver sighed,"To be honest, I thought he was dead."

"How?" Fleur looked at Elijah.

"That night, when he last called me, he told me he was going to kill himself.." Oliver rubbed his temples,"I never heard anything back."

"You never asked your mother about him?" Rossi blinked.

"She didn't like to speak about him, said he wasn't right."

"There was abuse going on the household, your younger brother called for help. And you did nothing?" Fleur scoffed.

"He.. He was a sinner." Oliver shook his head,"He-"

"I've heard enough." Elijah stood up.

"Figlio?" Rossi looked at him.

"Non lo conosco." Elijah shook his head as he walked out

"It doesn't matter if your brother was sinner, he was family." Fleur raised from her seat.

"You don't understand, you weren't there." Oliver sighed,"That.. It was him."

"What was him?"

"That man. That man is my brother." Oliver pointed

The three looked towards the window,"Agent Deans?"

"Deans? He changed his name to Deans?" Oliver shook his head,"Look, I have proof."

"Proof?" Fleur shook her head,"I'm sure."

"Wait here." Oliver sighed as he walked off, returning shortly after with a book.

"This guy's stupid." Fleur muttered to the guys.

"You want your proof? Here." Oliver handed over the book.

Hotch and Rossi took the book, opening it up. It was... A photo album? A much happier Benjamin, stood with two boys. As they flicked through, there were many other pictures like it and.. The younger boy did look like a young Elijah.

"This.. Still doesn't prove anything." Fleur shrugged.

"What more do you want?"

"Tell me something about Elijah only the closest people would know about him." Fleur crossed her arms.

"Let's see." Oliver sighed,"Uhm, he cried for two weeks when his first cat went missing. Sprinkles... And mother did tell me one thing."

"What did she tell you?"

"When he was seven, she hit him with a baseball bat. Broke his nose." Oliver told her,"She said he was unable to smell almost anything after that."

Fleur's eyes widened slightly,"Elijah is Ganets son?"

Oliver nodded,"I guess he never told you guys."

"I wouldn't want to know." Hotch sighed, Fleur quickly leaving to find Elijah.

Although, one of the SUVS was missing and Elijah was nowhere to be seen.

"Eli- Elijah?!" Fleur sighed.

"I think we need to regroup." Rossi shook his head as he followed her,"We should tell the others what we know."

"Elijah.. My poor boy." Fleur held her head.

"Hey, it's going to be okay." Rossi patted her back.

"I should've known."

"No, there was no way you could've known."

"Where would he go?"

"Well, he might've gone to see Reid at Stacy's house." Hotch suggested.

"I doubt it.. If Elijah is the other Ganet son, he wouldn't go near Stacy. She's a horrible person." Fleur shook her head.

"Call Garcia, ask what prison Benjamin is being held in." Rossi pointed.

Fleur nodded, getting out her phone and walked off.

*********************************

"Never thought I'd be back here." Elijah muttered as he entered the prison.

"Ganet? Is that you?" An officer who Elijah recognised asked from across the hall.

"It's me, Daniels." Elijah sighed.

"You've gotten big." Daniels chuckled.

"You've gotten old."

"You finally in here for a sentence?"

"My record's clean." Elijah crossed his arms.

"Sure." Daniels scoffed,"I'll call your father up."

Elijah took out his badge,"That would be appreciated."

Daniels rolled his eyes and walked off,"You know where to go."

"I do." Elijah began walking,"And Daniels? Next time, it's Agent Deans."

Daniels glanced towards the badge before walking off quickly. Elijah sighed and walked down the corridor, past the cells to the interview room. After what felt like forever, Elijah finally saw Benjamin walking through, sitting down across from him.

Elijah fidgeted with his sleeves,"Hi.. Dad."

"My boy.. How long has it been?"

"A decade, give or take."

"I thought you'd come and see me." Benjamin sighed.

"I couldn't, I had to get away.." Elijah told him.

"I understand." He nodded,"You here to wish me good luck?"

"Actually, I... Came to ask that you didn't appeal."

"That I.. Didn't?"

"I think it would be for the best if you stayed here."

"Why?"

"Well, nobody in their right mind would let you out anyway but.. I don't want to go through any of that again." Elijah sighed.

"Haven't you killed people in the FBI?"

"When I started, I made a promise to myself that I'd never shoot to kill." Elijah looked down,"But one of the Unsubs, he tortured my boyfriend- I had to."

"Boyfriend?" Benjamin sat up.

"Yes, my boyfriend." Elijah nodded.

"He treating you good?"

"Of course he is! He's so smart and caring and he's really pretty, so that's a bonus." Elijah pointed.

"You got a picture?"

"Uh, yeah." Elijah took out his wallet and handed a picture of him and Reid to Benjamin.

"He's cute." He nodded.

"I know." Elijah smioed softly,"He made me feel good about myself again."

"I'm glad he's making you happy." Benjamin hummed.

Elijah nodded as he took the picture back,"Will you consider what I asked?"

"I should be a free man.. Elijah."

"You killed eleven women, eleven innocent women." Elijah shook his head as he stood up,"I think we're done here."

"Then shouldn't you be here too? Don't forget, you killed one too."

"I never forgot. I never could." Elijah crossed his arms,"But I was a child, you were a man."

"Does it matter?"

"It does in the eyes of the law, Benjamin."

"Benjamin? Not dad?" Benjamin blinked.

"Look, I care about you. I care a lot. But I'm trying so hard to get on with my life, and you do this." Elijah sighed,"I'm not coming back."

"You can't do this, Elijah."

"Watch me." Elijah knocked on the wall, signaling the door to be opened.

"Elijah, please."

"No. You can't change my mind. You killed people and left me with her, now you get to stay here."

The door then opened, letting Elijah walk through. Elijah put his hands in his pockets as he walked out. That went.. Like he expected. Not well.

"Elijah?" Fleur raised from her seat in the waiting area.

"Fleur- What are you doing here?" Elijah asked her.

Fleur didn't answer, she just quickly hugged her best friend. Elijah tensed before hugging her back, holding her close to him.

"I'm so sorry.."

"Sorry? Why are you so sorry?"

"Because of what you had to witness.. And what your mother put you through."

"You know.. What she did?" Elijah blinked.

"Your brother told us." Fleur nodded.

"I don't have a brother, I don't know who that man is." Elijah shook his head.

Fleur tilted her head, pulling away,"Eli, it's okay..We know."

"I'm serious Fleur." Elijah sighed,"I'll admit it, I used to be Elijah Ganet. But I've never met Oliver in my life."

"He has.. Why don't you come back to the BAU?"

"Sure, I might as well." Elijah shrugged.

Fleur took Elijah's hand,"It's gonna be okay."

"I know." Elijah squeezed her hand.

*********************************

Elijah was sitting in the interview room, it was weird being on the other side of the table.

"Is this the right thing?" Emily sighed as they looked through the glass.

"I hate it. We're peering into his life." Reid muttered.

"But we need to." Rossi shook his head,"We need all the evidence we can get to keep Benjamin in jail and to hopefully arrest Stacy."

"I want her dead." Fleur crossed her arms.

"Legally that's not possible." Hotch then put Garcia on speaker,"Have you found anything else on Stacy Ganet?"

"I need... A lot of fluffy animal therapy after this." Garcia shivered.

"What is it, babygirl?" Morgan asked.

"Stacy Ganet was a horrible mother she- She abused Elijah to the point of death.. Instead of taking him to a hospital, she took him to the church. It was in the newspapers because the church had 'saved' him." Garcia explained,"Not to mention the several calls to child services that no follow-up reports were made for.. They were written off as self-harm.."

"No wonder he's got such an aversion to churches." JJ sighed.

"Who's going to talk to him?" Hotch crossed his arms.

"I can, unless you want to." Rossi raised his hand, looking over at Reid.

"Maybe.. Both of us." Reid suggested.

"Now that could work." Rossi nodded, heading for the door,"You ready?"

Reid nodded, walking in with Rossi. He then grabbed a chair and sat down beside Elijah, holding his hand out.

Elijah took Reid's hand,"You guys took forever."

"Sorry." Reid sighed.

"Go on then, ask me your questions." Elijah leaned back in his chair.

"You're not an UnSub, don't think of it like that." Rossi assured him.

"I'm not.

"Good." Rossi nodded,".. We want your father to stay in jail, but we also want your mother to go there too. She deserves it. So you need to tell us anything you can."

"Where do I start?" Elijah chuckled softly.

"Anywhere." Reid squeezed his hand.

"She wasn't too bad, not at first. She'd hit me for misbehaving but only when we were alone." Elijah began,"She got worse with dad went to jail."

"She'd make sure no one could stop it." Reid nodded.

"She blamed me, took everything out on me.. She'd use whatever she could find. Bottles, belts, anything." He continued,"She started drinking more and I began.. Taking care of the house, cleaning so she wouldn't be angry."

They nodded,"When did the bad mental health come into place?"

"I don't know, maybe when I was twelve? I tried not to let things bother me but.. Her words, the glares from neighbors, the isolation.." Elijah squeezed Reid's hand,"That's.. When I started."

"Started what?" Rossi leaned over.

"Hurting himself." Reid shook his head.

Elijah slowly rolled up his sleeves to reveal is old scars, although there were newer marks too. Scratches.

"It's.. Not the only thing that started." Elijah admitted.

"What else started?"

"I started taking my mother's painkillers. I.. Got hooked." Elijah looked to the side.

"Eli.." Reid squeezed his hands.

"I tried to... Kill myself with them." Elijah began to tear up,"Everything- I wanted it to be over.."

"I'm glad you're still here, my boy." Rossi sighed.

Elijah turned to Reid and pulled him into a hug. Reid quickly hugged back, playing with Elijah's curls.

"I'm sorry.." Elijah began to cry.

"It's not your fault." Reid assured him.

"I'm a murderer.."

"You're a victim too, Elijah." Rossi shook his head.

"Michelle." Elijah closed his eyes.

"Michelle?" Rossi raised a brow.

Elijah stayed quiet, his head resting on Reid's shoulder.

"Who's Michelle?" Rossi asked.

"I killed her.." Elijah sniffled.

"You killed.. Michelle?"

Elijah nodded, refusing to look up at the other two.

"Michelle Deans.. Ganet's last kill." Reid looked up.

Elijah broke down in Reid's arms, unable to hold in his emotions any longer..

Reid gently rubbed Elijah's back,"It's okay.. It's okay."

"Non va bene.. Perché vi importa ancora a entrambi?" Elijah rubbed his eyes

"Because you're family." Rossi told him,"Family stick together."

Elijah looked up at Rossi,"You mean it?"

"Of course." Rossi nodded.

"You're no less of a victim than any of the women your father killed. You're a victim and a survivor." Reid assured him.

Elijah smiled softly,"Am I.. Free to go? Do you need to know anything else?"

"Can I ask about Oliver?" Reid rubbed his arm.

"I don't know him."

"He has proof that he's your brother."

"But I don't know him." Elijah insisted,"I don't remember having a brother, at all."

"He's telling the truth." Reid tilted his head,".. Honey, when... Your mother hurt you, did you hurt your head?"

Elijah nodded slowly,"A few times, why?"

"You might have suffered some brain damage. Oliver said he moved away before your tenth birthday. You might not remember him due to not seeing him all the time."

"I.." Elijah stopped, looking at his hands,"Oh my god.. Is that why I have memory problems?"

"It might explain it." Rossi nodded.

Elijah went quiet, looking down at the table.

"I'm going to make sure that woman gets a life sentence." Fleur spoke from the other side of the glass.

"You and I both." Morgan crossed his arms.

"Alright, that's all son." Rossi nodded.

Elijah stood up, rubbing his eyes and walking out of the room quietly.

"Eli?" Fleur asked.

Elijah pulled Fleur into a hug, holding her close.

Fleur hugged back,'You're okay now."

"I don't want to forget you.' Elijah whispered.

"You won't." Fleur nodded.

Elijah pulled away, smiling at Fleur,"I'm glad that you're my best friend."

"Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere."

"You better not, I'd follow you."

"I know." Fleur laughed.

Elijah chuckled softly before hugging Morgan as well.

"Family doesn't always have to be blood." Morgan hugged back.

"I know." Elijah smiled.

*********************************

"Do you want to be there?" Fleur asked Elijah.

"I have to be there." Elijah nodded.

"Show her that you're not what she made." Fleur patted his back.

"I will."

"Let's go." Rossi got out the SUV.

Elijah took in a deep breath as they approached the house. He could do this.

"On you go." Reid smiled.

Elijah nodded and walked up to the door, knocking on it.

After a few minutes, the door was opened by Stacy,"What do you want?"

"Ma'am, you're under arrest."

"Who do you think you are?" Stacy scoffed.

"Your son." Elijah spat.

Stacy looked him up and down,"Oliver?"

"..Elijah."

"Oh.. You." Stacy rolled her eyes,"Why am I under arrest then, hm?"

"Child abuse on several counts." He told her.

"You're joking." Stacy chuckled.

"Oh no, I'm serious."

"We have all the proof we need." Fleur crossed her arms.

"And you're going away for a very long time." Rossi told her.

"You can't do this." Stacy began to close the door.

"We can. And we will." Morgan held the door open.

"This was your plan all along." Stacy charged for Elijah,"You ungrateful-"

"Right, that's enough." Rossi grabbed Stacy, pulling her back.

"Let me go! Oh god, save me from these horrid sinners-" Stacy began to pray.

"Oh Stacy." Elijah shook his head,"God won't save you from this."

"One day you'll get what you deserve." Stacy spat.

"Back off." Reid took Elijah's hand.

"Take her away, Rossi." Elijah leaned into Reid.

Rossi hummed,"With pleasure, son." He dragged Stacy off after cuffing her.

Elijah turned and hugged Reid, holding him tightly.

"She's gone. Forever." Reid kissed his head.

"Thank you, all of you." Elijah sighed.

"You're family." Morgan patted his back.

"I won't be forgetting that any time soon." Elijah assured him

*********************************

Later on at night, once everyone was home, Reid handed Elijah a coffee as they sat in their bed.

"Thank you." Elijah took the cup, leaning against Reid.

"I'm just glad your mother is gone. I was so close to genuinely snapping at her."

"I'm sorry you had to see me like I was." Elijah sighed,"And that you found out about.. Everything like this."

Reid gently shook his head,"Knowing what I do now doesn't change the way I think about you."

"Are you sure?" Elijah looked over at him.

"Of course I'm sure." Reid gave a small smile.

Elijah smiled back, looking down at his arms as he took a sip of coffee.

"Promise you won't.." Reid looked at his arms.

"I promise." Elijah told him.

"I'm always going to be here." Reid assured him.

"I know you are." Elijah placed a hand on Reid's cheek as tiny feet could be heard.

"Come on up you two." Reid chuckled, leaning down and lifted Muffin up while Horatio jumped up.

"There you are, baby." Elijah smiled at them.

Reid then placed Muffin on Elijah's lap. Muffin looking at Elijah and licked his fingers.

"We're all just going to have a nice, quiet night." Elijah told Muffin, gently stroking his head.

Horatio meowed, resting his head on Reid's lap as he turned on a movie. Elijah held Muffin close to him, leaning into Reid as they watched the film.

*********************************

After a few days, in the offices everything was calm.. Until Hotch walked into the room.

"Elijah?"

"Yes, Hotch?" Elijah spun around in his seat.

"An Oliver is here to see you.. Your brother."

Elijah sighed and stood up,"Why?"

"I don't know." He sighed.

Elijah nodded slowly and walked out of the room, where Oliver was waiting for him.

"Elijah.. Wow. You got.. Wow." Oliver stood up.

"I already saw you a few days ago." Elijah out his hands in his pockets,"Why did you come to my work?"

"I wanted to see if we could talk."

"You want to talk?"

"To catch up."

"Look, Oliver, I don't have any recollection of you. You're a stranger to me, because of mother." Elijah sighed.

"I want to see.. If we can build a bond."

"Build a bond?"

"Between us. As brothers. Like we used to be." Oliver nodded.

"You left me in an abusive household at ten." Elijah crossed his arms,"That doesn't strike me as us being 'close'."

"I didn't think she'd hurt you that bad.. I thought the extent she went was bad enough."

"I heard that I called you the night I tried to.." Elijah trailed off,"Why didn't you do anything?"

"God.. God would save you. I prayed for you. And you survived." Oliver nodded.

"It wasn't God- My neighbor gave me CPR." Elijah shook his head.

"God sent him. He heard me calling." Oliver smiled.

"God didn't protect me. He never did. I prayed too and nothing worked."

"But it did. Because you're here and healthy and happy." Oliver nodded.

"Mother nearly beat me to death when I told her I liked boys." Elijah pointed.

"You're gay?"

"I'm gay."

"I.. I didn't expect this from you."

"I don't try to hide it anymore." Elijah shrugged.

"I think I need to.. Go." Oliver shook his head.

"Go on then." Elijah nodded.

Oliver cleared his throat,"Goodbye Elijah."

"Bye Oliver." Elijah put his hands back in his pockets.

"I hope one day we can talk, properly." Oliver walked off.

Elijah looked down, digging into his pockets and pulling out a small, golden necklace with a small cross on it. No, he didn't believe anymore but.. He'd carried it around with him since he was young.

"Kid?" Morgan walked out of the room.

"Hm?" Elijah turned to look at Morgan, putting his hands in his pockets again.

"We're having some cake, want some?"

"Oh- Yeah, that would be great."

"Come on." He opened the door.

"Coming." Elijah smiled softly, walking towards him.

"Yay! There's my favourite boy." Garcia smiled.

"Aw, I'm your favourite?" Elijah hummed.

"One of them, my little Londoner." Garcia pointed.

"Maybe one day I'll take you to London, how does that sound?' Elijah offered.

"That would be bloody brilliant." Garcia smiled.

Elijah chuckled,"Oh, you are something, darling."

"I love it when you call me that." Garcia hummed.

"That's why I do it." Elijah patted her head.
