Chapter 27 - Penelope
"Are you happy, gorgeous boy?" Elijah asked as he held Muffin, he'd been trying to spend as much time as he could with him.
Muffin leaned on Elijah's arm, purring softly.
"Are you tired?"
"I think... He'll tell you when the time is right." Reid kissed Elijah's head.
"But I'm scared- What if we're working?" Elijah looked up at him.
"It could happen whenever." Reid sighed.
"I don't want him to leave."
"I know... Me neither." Reid shook his head.
Elijah sighed, stroking Muffin,"I hope Garcia's having fun on her date."
"Oh, I forgot about that." Reid pointed.
"I told her it was a great idea, she deserves something nice."
"She does. She needed the date."
"He better treat her right or I'll have some choice words." Elijah shook his head.
"I'm sure you will, hun." Reid hummed.
"You believe me, don't you?" Elijah looked down at Muffin.
Muffin looked up at Elijah.
"I know you do." Elijah booped his nose.
Horatio then loudly meowed, jumping onto the coffee table.
"Do you went attention too?" Elijah looked over at him,"I have two hands for a reason."
"He's a little attention seeker." Reid laughed.
"Come on then." Elijah sighed
Horatio jumped onto the couch and purred while the two boys petted him.
"That better?"
"Very better." Reid agreed.
"I'm going to get myself a drink, you hold the boys." Elijah pointed.
"I've got them." Reid picked the cats up.
"Do you want anything while I'm in here?" Elijah asked as he walked to the kitchen.
"I'll be okay." Reid shook his head as Elijah's phone rang.
"Yes darling?" Elijah answered as he opened the fridge.
"Elijah? It's JJ. Garcia's been shot."
Elijah slammed the door shut,"Excuse me?"
"I don't know much- But you gotta come to the hospital."
"We'll be there." Elijah hung up, turning around,"Reid. Shoes on. Now."
"What's wrong?' Reid looked up, putting the cats on their beds.
"JJ called- Garcia's been shot." Elijah shook his head as he hurried to put on his shoes.
"Shot- Garcia?"
"God, she was supposed to be happy tonight." Elijah cursed.
"She'll be okay. We better go." Reid ran.
"I hope you don't mind me breaking the law." Elijah grabbed his keys.
"Not if it involves Pen." Reid shook his head.
*********************************
"Thanks for coming with me." Morgan looked dover at Fleur,"You really didn't need to."
"Despite my dislike towards God... Just sitting in an empty church is slightly calming. Especially when you're not alone." Fleur nodded.
"You got that right." Morgan looked around them.
Fleur walked up to a small area where some candles were lit up, grabbing a match and lit a small candle.
"Lost someone?" Morgan asked, walking over to her.
Fleur looked at Morgan,"A friend... Back in France."
Morgan rubbed her back,"Hey, it's okay."
"It was a long time ago." Fleur assured him.
"I'm sure, wherever they are now, that they're proud of you for what you're doing." Morgan told her.
"..I hope so." Fleur sighed, leaning against him.
Morgan kissed her forehead,"I'm glad we came."
"So am I. It's getting late, we should head."
"I suppose we should." Morgan nodded, taking his phone off silent.
Fleur did the same. The two only then realised all of the messages and missed calls they had from the team. Almost immediately, Fleur's phone rang again.
"Hello?" Fleur quickly answered.
"Where the hell are you?" Elijah asked,"Is Morgan there too?"
"Yeah, we were at the church- What's going on?"
"You guys need to get to the hospital now. Right now." Elijah's voice was shaky,"It's Garcia, she's been shot."
Fleur froze,"Right... Okay, we're coming." She quickly hung up,"Garcia's been shot- She was on that date, wasn't she?"
Morgan blinked,"I knew it.. But Elijah and I, we told her to go."
"It's not your guys' fault." Fleur sighed as she ran to the car.
"No, but I'm gonna find the son of a bitch that hurt her." Morgan shook his head as he followed her.
"You and me both." Fleur nodded.
*********************************
"She's been in surgery a couple hours." JJ stood up as Morgan and Fleur walked in.
"We were in church. Our phones were off." Morgan sighed.
"There's nothing you could've been doing here." Elijah was looking down, scratching his arms.
Reid took Elijah's hands, squeezing them,"Hey."
"Sorry." Elijah spoke quietly.
"It's okay." Reid assured him.
"Do the police have any leads?" Fleur asked.
"I spoke with the lead detective. He doesn't think we'll get anything from the scene." Hotch shook his head.
"Penelope Garcia?" A nurse walked out.
"Yes?" The team turned, looking at him.
"The bullet went straight in her chest and ricocheted into her abdomen. She lost a lot of blood. It was touch and go for a while, but we were able to repair the injuries." He explained.
"So, what are you saying?" JJ asked.
"One centimeter over and it would have torn right through her heart. Instead, she could walk out of here in a couple days, and I'd say that's a minor miracle. She needs her rest. You can see her in the morning."
"Thank you." JJ nodded to him as he walked off.
"David and I will go to the scene. I think the rest of you should be here when she wakes up. I don't care about protocol. I don't care whether we're working this officially or not. We do not touch any other cases until we find out who did this." Hotch ordered.
*********************************
The nurse came back, leading them towards Garcia's room. She was awake, she was going to be okay.
Fleur walked over, kissing Garcia's head,"Thank god."
"No tears." Garcia told them,"I'm afraid if I start crying, I'll come unstapled."
"Oh, darling." Elijah could barely look at her.
"How are you feeling?" Morgan sighed.
"Confused. Stupid. In pain." Garcia shook her head.
"Are you up for some questions?" JJ asked.
"I never saw it coming. He was so.. Deliciously normal."
"You know who shot you?" Reid blinked.
"You were right, I shouldn't have trusted it." Garcia looked up at Morgan.
"What are you talking about?" Morgan looked down at her.
"It was that guy I told you and Elijah about, the one I met at the coffee shop." Garcia told them,"I wanted to belive he was interested in me.."
"Forget that." Morgan shook his head.
"I let my guard down.."
"Do you have any idea why he would've done this?" Emily asked.
"Did he threaten you? Did he want something?" Fleur tried.
"I just thought he liked me.." Garcia looked down.
"Okay. We're going to come back in a little while." JJ nodded.
"We need a name." Elijah spoke up.
"James Colby Baylor." Garcia sighed.
Elijah nodded slowly and the group began to leave the hospital room. Morgan walked out, punching the wall.
"You need to stay calm, Derek." Fleur shook her head.
"Do not tell me what to be." Morgan pointed.
"Do you two remember anything she said about him?" Reid asked the boys.
"No." Elijah shook his head, running his fingers through his hair.
"I just talked to Hotch. He thinks he used a revolver." Emily walked to them.
"Who the hell uses a revolver?" Morgan scoffed.
"Someone who doesn't want to leave shell casings behind as evidence." Fleur shrugged.
"What about witnesses?" Elijah asked.
"None so far. And he staged it to look like a robbery." Emily nodded.
"Which means if he's smart enough to use forensic countermeasures, odds are the name Garcia gave us is bogus." Reid crossed his arms, looking at JJ as she walked over,"What did she say?"
"She made me promise not to talk about her like a victim." JJ sighed.
*********************************
"Hey, how're you feeling?" Morgan asked Garcia.
"Good news.. Bad news.. The morphine is wearing off. When I was in the ambulance, I could hear the song 'Heroes' playing in my head. I kept flashing in and out of consciousness. Everything was really bright.. And I remember thinking, is David Bowie really a god?" Garcia hummed.
Elijah chuckled softly,"Of course he is."
"We uh, we have a sketch artist coming in." Reid told her.
"Okay.. I'm still a little hazy." Garcia reminded them.
"And that's okay. Anything you tell us will help." Fleur assured her.
"Did this guy say what he did for a living?" Morgan asked.
"He said he was a lawyer."
"Did people know him where you went?" Reid raised a brow.
"He said he wanted to show me a place. It was half an hour away." Garcia nodded.
"You drove with him?" Elijah blinked.
"Hmm." Garcia nodded.
"What car?"
"White. Four door Sedan. American. It smelled new." Garcia closed her eyes as she tried to remember.
"A rental car, maybe?" Reid suggested
"Maybe. I don't know- I don't look at things like you do. I don't see danger." Garcia sighed.
"It's okay, darling." Elijah patted her arm,"What else can you remember?"
"He smelled good."
"Hey, are you sure you're up to this?" Morgan asked, wiping her tears.
"I thought he was just afraid to kiss me goodnight." Garcia nodded,"I could hear him walking, he leaned over me and I held my breath so he'd think I was dead.."
"You're safe now, hun." Elijah wiped his eyes.
*********************************
After a few hours, Garcia had gotten into more comfortable clothes. Fleur had done her hair in some small plaits to get them out of her way.
"Penelope, I know it's gotta be hard to keep reliving this." Morgan sighed.
"I don't know what else there is to remember." Garcia sighed.
"Let's start with the behavior. That's all profiling really is. It's just noticing behavior." Reid told her.
"Sweetie, any details you can remember will tell us who he is, okay?" Fleur sat down.
"Mhm." Garcia nodded.
"Alright, so let's go back to when you first arrived at the restaurant. Was he nervous?" Morgan asked.
"No. The opposite, actually." Garcia shook her head.
"So he was trying to impress you by showing you how he can take charge?" Fleur tilted her head.
"I guess so."
"Tell me about his watch." Reid nodded.
"It's a fake Rolex." Garcia answered.
"Are you sure about that?" Elijah asked.
"I know my knock offs." Garcia chuckled.
"Clearly, he was playing with it, though because he wanted you to notice. I mean, he wanted you to think it was real." Reid crossed his arms.
"Garcia, you okay?" Morgan looked at her.
"I'm feeling really exposed." She responded.
"You're doing just fine." He assured her.
"He.. Said he was a city attorney, that he tried a few murder cases."
"City attorneys don't try murder cases." Reid quickly turned.
"What?" Garcia blinked.
"He knows enough to use legal terminology, but he's not actually a working lawyer." Reid explained.
*********************************
"I think we're looking for someone who failed out of law school or who didn't pass the bar." Morgan told them as he sat down.
"Did Garcia say if he gave any details about the cases he was supposedly working?" JJ asked as everyone joined together in the conference room.
"No specifics." Reid shook his head.
"If he failed out of the system, it could explain why he's got a working vocabulary and not much more." Hotch pointed.
"It could also explain his anger. Even in his lie, he rails against other people's incompetence." Elijah tapped his pencil on the table.
"Well, he's clearly a narcissist. The clothes, the watch, the subtle hints where he went to school. He's faking humility when he's saying New Haven and Cambridge, instead of Harvard and Yale." Fleur sighed.
"JJ, we need an analyst who can put our information through our legal databases." Hotch looked over at her.
"I'm on it." JJ ran off.
*********************************
"Is this really necessary?" Elijah asked.
A Higher-up, Fuchs, was taking down their evidence photos, he was supposed to be leading the investigation now.
"It's protocol." Fuchs shrugged.
Fleur looked over at Elijah and made a face towards the man.
He sighed,"Yes, it's necessary. Mr Lynch will do an audit of her computer. I will oversee the investigation."
"A federal employee was just gunned down and you make it seem like investigating her is more important than finding out who shot her." Fleur scoffed.
"Now, that's not true. The police have jurisdiction and trust me, I will offer them the full force of the FBI to help solve this case." He pointed.
"With all due respect, sir, the BAU is part of that force." Elijah crossed his arms.
"Look, I'm sorry. I realize how hard this must be." He sighed.
"But?" Elijah raised a brow.
"But, the first thing you look at is victimology, correct?"
"Obviously." Fleur muttered.
"The Bureau needs to know what she's involved in and whether it has to do with why she was shot." He explained.
"She's not involved in anything." JJ shook her head.
"And you're certain of that?" He asked.
"Absolutely." Emily nodded.
Fuchs then walked to a file, opening it up and tossing it on the table,"What do you know about how she was recruited into the FBI?"
The four of them looked around at each other. They.. Didn't know anything about Garcia's recruitment.
"Well, the Bureau keeps track of computer hackers. Ones who have the skill to be either extremely useful or potential menace." He explained.
"So, Garcia was on a watch list?" Emily asked.
"No, watch lists are long." He shook his head,"I'm talking about only a handful of people on the planet."
"What did she do to get on this list?" JJ raised a brow.
"I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to answer that." He sighed.
*********************************
"What's going on?" JJ asked Morgan as they entered Garcia's home.
The Unsub had come back and tried to attack Garcia again. He also killed an officer who was stationed outside.
"I don't know. This guys getting seriously bold and I can guarantee you, it's not over." Morgan pointed.
"Are you okay? Both of you?" Fleur looked between them.
"I don't know what he wants from me." Garcia shook her head.
"Could you know something about him?" Reid tried.
"I don't know who he is." Garcia insisted,"I'm so scared.."
"I know." JJ sighed.
The others were stood outside of Garcia's house as an officer walked up to them.
"Just so you know, your office called to tell me we're suppose to run point on this. They don't want you working the case."
"We're just here to comfort a friend." Hotch assured him.
"I'm about to have to tell a good friend's wife that her husband was murdered." He sighed,"I don't care what your office says. Whatever help you can give is good in my book."
"Thank you." Hotch nodded.
"I'm sick of being behind this guy. We've got to end this." Elijah shook his head.
"Agreed." Rossi patted Elijah's back as they walked into the apartment.
"Hey, did you get a good look at him?" Emily asked.
"Nothing solid." Morgan told her.
"Garcia, we need to get you back to the hospital." Hotch sighed.
"No!" Garcia quickly shook her head.
"No, you know what? You should still be there. We need to get her someplace safe." JJ pointed.
"I feel safe with all of you." Garcia told them.
"We could take you to the BAU." Hotch suggested.
Garcia hesitated before she nodded, staring into space.
"Darling, what's wrong?" Elijah bent down.
"When we were at the diner, they wanted to seat us by a window, but he insisted on sitting at the worst table in the place and he sat with his back to the corner." Garcia remembered.
Hotch turned as the detecive walked in,"Detective, could you clear the room for just a minute?"
"I got a dead cop downstairs, I'm considering this part of the crime scene." The Detective sighed.
"I know, just a couple of minutes."
"Do what you gotta do." He sighed and walked out
"Thank you." Hotch nodded.
"Tell us about the car." Morgan turned to her.
"Why?" Garcia blinked.
"Just go with him." Fleur assured her.
"You said it was white, four door, American. But what else?" He asked.
"That's it. It was just a car." Garcia shrugged.
"Now come on. Think. Anything. Go back." Morgan tried.
"His seat belt was buckled behind his back." Garcia recalled,"Why does that matter?"
"It wasn't a rental, it was for surveillance." Elijah sighed.
"Agents don't wear seatbelts. We need to get out fast." Fleur added.
"Alright, let's cut the crap. You need to be straight with us, right now." Rossi sat in front of Garcia,"Look at me, not at them."
"I'm not hiding anything." Garcia shook her head.
"You got shot. Most people get shot for a reason." Rossi pointed,"Eyes here!"
"Rossi, basta così." Elijah put a hand on his shoulder.
"You've got a room full of people here, willing to believe that an FBI Agent is trying to kill you. We need to know everything you do on company time, that we don't know about." Rossi continued.
"Come on, man." Morgan sighed.
"It's nothing bad." Garcia quickly shook her head.
"Spit it out!" Rossi snapped.
"I counsel victims families. And they know where I work so sometimes they ask me to look into cases for them." Garcia quickly spoke.
"What does that mean?" Rossi asked.
"It means that the cases, the unsolved ones, I tag them, so that whoever is investigating them knows that FBI considers them a priority." Garcia rambled.
"You're not authorized to do that."
"I know. I was just trying to help." Garcia sighed.
"But whoever's working those cases think you're watching them." Emily told her.
"I just want to put pressure on them so that they don't slide." Garcia shook her head.
"How many cases are we talking here?" Hotch asked.
"I don't know.. Seven, maybe eight? I'd need to get into my system."
"You can't, you're suspended."
"Wait a minute. Garcia, on your date you said the guy was pressing you to find out if you were working murder cases. Hotch, we gotta look at those files." Morgan turned to Hotch.
"I told you, I'm sick of this jagoff being in front of us." Rossi crossed his arms
"Dave's right. We'll go back to the BAU. Morgan, Reid, Prentiss, Deans and Howards, you guys stay here to make sure no one forgets to log out of the system. Garcia should not have access." Hotch ordered
"Understood." Elijah sighed.
"I'm gonna make some teas and coffees for everyone." Fleur got up from the couch.
*********************************
"Okay, that's funky." Garcia shook her head as she looked at her laptop.
"What's going on?" Reid walked over.
"He just logged into my system. There's a link up on my screen." She told him.
"Maybe it's a mistake." Emily shrugged.
"No, he's good. He's not careless."
"Could he be trying to show you something?" Elijah raised a brow.
"He could be baiting me." Garcia tilted her head.
"What does that mean?" Emily asked.
"If he's with Internal Affairs and I follow his lead, whoever's log in I used could lose their job." Garcia explained.
"What's your gut say?" Morgan crossed his arms.
"He's a hacker. We have a code." Garcia shrugged.
"You trust it?"
"I have to." She nodded.
"Do it, make contact." Morgan told her.
Garcia nodded again, typing on her keyboard. That's when a video feed of the BAU popped up on the screen.
"Oh God, that's him." Garcia shook her head.
Morgan quickly got out his phone and called Hotch, watching the scene unfold.
"We gotta slip somebody in behind him." Fleur sighed.
"Can you get us the cameras outisde of the bullpen?" Reid asked.
Garcia typed, getting another angle from the feed, before getting another angle of JJ in her office.
That's when Morgan called her,"Come on, JJ. Pick up. Pick up the phone."
"Hello?" JJ answered her phone.
"JJ, it's Morgan. Listen to me very carefully."
After discussing with JJ what she needed to do, the call ended and they could see The UnSub looking around.
"He knows they know." Fleur sighed.
"This is crazy, we need to get over there." Morgan turned.
"I'm coming with you." Garcia got up.
"No, you are not." Elijah pointed.
"You do not have time to argue." Gacia pointed back at him.
*********************************
"It's really over?" Garcia asked as the covered Jason's body with a plastic sheet.
"Yeah, it's really over." Morgan assured her,"Now, can we please get you back to the hospital?"
Garcia looked away, looking at Fuchs who had been held at gunpoint during the confrontation.
"He'll sign your reinstatement papers as soon as his hands stop shaking." Emily assured her.
Garcia then turned to JJ,"Hey.. I never wanted you to have to do something like that."
"I never even blinked. You do whatever it takes to protect your family." JJ gave a small smile.
Garcia smiled and hugged JJ as Elijah and Fleur did their usual, giving looks to Kevin as he watched Garcia.
