Chapter 25 - Seven Seconds

"Good morning all." Fleur walked into the office.

"Welcome." Elijah nodded.

"Elijah, I got my nails done." Fleur hummed.

"Oh- Let me see." Elijah stood up.

"What do you think?"

"Darling, they are stunning." Elijah pointed.

"I will refer you to my nail artist." Fleur nodded.

"Oh, please do. I've been meaning to redo mine." Elijah told her.

"Yours look great." Reid assured him.

"Thanks love." Elijah smiled.

"My nails look good, don't they?" Fleur showed them to Morgan.

"Your nails always look good." Morgan nodded,"Today especially."

Fleur smiled and leaned back into him. Morgan grinned, kissing her cheek.

"Guys?" JJ ran in.

"Oh, running. Is it a bad one?" Elijah turned.

"A child abduction." JJ nodded.

"That's not good." Morgan shook his head.

"It's at a mall near here. We gotta go."

"Going." Elijah nodded, grabbing his bag.

*********************************

"Jim." Hotch walked into the mall.

"We've been on lockdown for almost twenty minutes. My team's already in motion." Franklin nodded.

"Another female, same age, same time of day, taken from essentially the same location." Emily sighed.

"What makes you sure Katie Jacobs is still in the building?" Morgan asked.

"The malls got cameras installed at every entrance and exit. Surveillance video confirms Katie entering the building but no sign of her leaving. Security paged her over the intercom, and their initial sweep came up empty." Franklin explained.

"Whoever killed Jessica Davis last week left the mall with her, 'cause he wanted time with his victim and privacy." Reid nodded.

"Assuming it's the same offender, he wouldn't stray far from his MO. He wouldn't leave here without his victim." Hotch agreed.

"So, if Katie's still under this roof, so is her abductor." JJ crossed her arms.

"Garcia, report to the mall security office." Hotch pointed,"Reid, Deans and Morgan, I want you to find the Head of Security. I need all data from every search team. You guys start with Katie's parents. We'll treat the mall like a neighbourhood, we'll separate into areas of control." Hotch ordered.

*********************************

"Hi, we're Agents Jareau, Prentiss and Howards with the BAU." JJ introduced them as they approached Katie's family,"You must be Katie's aunt and uncle. This can't be easy. We're here to walk you through this."

Upstairs, the boys were handing out blueprints of the Mall.

"Well, aside from the stairwells, storage closets and hundreds of shops, there's a whole underbelly beneath our feet. A subterranean level, air ducts, boiler rooms." Morgan pointed.

"Realistically, it'll take at least three hours to cover this place." The Head of Security told them.

"Realistically we have half that time." Morgan shrugged.

"How do you figure?"

"99% of abducted children who are killed die within the first twenty four hours, 75% within the first three hours, and what only Law enforcement knows, Jessica Davis joined the 44% of children who are abducted and killed within the first hour." Reid explained.

"What have you got for me, darling?" Elijah answered his phone as it rang.

"Come up to the security room please, chap." Garcia nodded.

"On my way." Elijah nodded, making his way to the security room.

Once he was upstairs, Garcia turned the laptop to him,"Okay, so this is surveillance footage off an exit camera outside the arcade."

"Can't you get a better angle?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Sugar, I'm not London here. I can only work with what they have. And believe me when I tell you the 1980s just called, they want their security system back. Okay, look in the far right middle section. You see the two ponytails?"

"Yeah, that's Katie." Elijah nodded slowly.

"The angle barely got an image of her, let alone who she was with." She sighed.

"Can you enhance the image for me?" Elijah asked.

"I can start the process but we don't have that kind of time."

"You are breaking my heart, darling." Elijah shook his head,"Where are you going?"

"And who are you with?" Garcia sighed.

*********************************

"So, she and her cousin came in here about thirty minutes ago, and that was the last time anyone saw Katie?" Elijah asked.

"That's right." The manager nodded.

"Ten minutes after the assault is generally the molester's lowest point in self-esteem." Reid explained.

"He could be panicking right now, realising he's got a witness." Morgan nodded.

"Richard Allen Davis strangled Polly Klaas just to prevent her from identifying him." Reid told them.

"A single abduction like this would normally be be classified as a snatch and grab, but with the Jessica Davis abduction, it's more likely we're dealing with a preferential offender.." Morgan began.

"Whose victims fall into a particular type. He came to this mall knowing what he was looking for, because he felt safe here, familiar with his surroundings." Elijah contiued.

*********************************

"So when you and your cousin were going in and out of stores did anyone try to talk to her?" Fleur crouched down.

"I.. Don't think so." Jeremy shook his head.

"Did somebody maybe compliment her hair or open the door for you guys?" Emily tried.

"He wasn't exactly paying attention." The uncle, Richard, shook his head.

"Yes I was." Jeremy scoffed.

"Yeah." Richard looked away from him.

"You'd think after all my years in retail, I'd hate the mall but it was convenient." Susan, the aunt chuckled.

"She was right next to me, I swear."

"And then we split up because I had to shop for my husband's birthday." Susan nodded.

"And that's when you got lost in that video game, right?" Richard pointed.

Susan then began crying,"I should've just stayed near the kids."

"It's not fair!" Jeremy shook his head.

"And now, I wish we never left the house this morning." Susan sighed.

"I'm sure thats how my brother feels too." Richard looked down at Jeremy,"You know this may just be all a mistake. Katie might just be lost. Maybe in some bookstore she loves or something. She loves to read. She could just be in the corner.. I don't know. Or maybe playing dress up in a store or something."

That's when the boys walked over, Elijah approaching Susan.

"Would it be alright if we speak with Jeremy privately, Ma'am?" He asked.

Susan hesitated before she nodded,"Yeah, just... He's only young."

"We'll be careful with him." Reid assured her.

"Jeremy." Susan called him over.

Jeremy looked up at her, getting up from where he was sat.

"You're going to go with these nice agents, okay?"

"Okay." He nodded slowly.

"We are nice, your mom's right." Reid smiled.

The boys lead Jeremy to a table away from his parents and the girls.

"Jeremy, we asked your mom and dad if we could speak with you privately. We thought it might be easier that way." Reid explained.

"Because my dad thinks this is all my fault." Jeremy sighed.

"No, Jeremy, your dad is just super upset right now, because at times like this, people get really emotional." Elijah shook his head.

"Hey kid, the moments right before a kidnapping like this are very important. You gotta understand, you're the only one who can help us with that." Morgan crouched down.

"But- But I don't remember." He shook his head

"Jeremy, all we need is the last thing Katie said or did before you realised she was gone." Reid sighed.

Jeremy shook his head, his breathing quickening.

"Jeremy? What? What is it? Talk to me." Morgan put a hand on his shoulder.

"I can't breathe." Jeremy held his chest, standing up.

"He's having a panic attack, sit down." Elijah realized.

"I want you to put your head between your knees. That's right, just breathe... There you go." Morgan rubbed his back.

"You're alright now, kid." Elijah sighed

*********************************

The boys decided on taking Jeremy back to the Arcade to do a cognitive interview. It might help jog his memory.

"So, what are you youngsters playing these days?" Morgan asked.

"I like DOA." Jeremy nodded.

"DOA." Elijah blinked,"As in, Dead on Arrival?"

"It's Dead or Alive." Reid muttered.

"Good to know." Elijah nodded.

"What do you like so much about it, Jeremy?" Morgan raised a brow.

"It's close combat. It's all about timing. How well you know your enemies, I'm really good at it." Jeremy nodded, smiling slightly.

Morgan chuckled,"I bet your are, kid."

"So, what was the first game you walked to when you came in here earlier?" Elijah tilted his head.

"Over here." Jeremy led the men over to the game he was playing earlier.

"I'm gonna ask you to close your eyes for a minute, alright?" Morgan stood beside Jeremy,"I want you to go back to when you first came in the arcade a little earlier. Can you remember that?"

"Yeah." Jeremy sighed, closing his eyes.

"You're doing great, my man." Morgan told him,"In your mind, I want you to picture what it sounded like in here. Picture what it smelled like. Was it crowded?"

"It was loud." Jeremy nodded.

"Were the people loud or were the sound effects loud?" Reid questioned.

"Both. Some kid was yelling at his game." Jeremy remembered what happened, beginning to shake again.

"What's making you so uncomfortable, Jeremy?" Elijah raised a brow.

"She was crying.."

"What was she crying about?"

"I don't remember. I couldn't hear."

"Okay. Jeremy, go back to the video game." Morgan nodded.

"I was winning." Jeremy held the arcade game.

"And how'd that make you feel?"

"Awsome. Proud of myself." Jeremy nodded, "Kind of embarrassed."

"Embarrassed? How?" Elijah asked.

"Like, people were watching me."

"Why were you self-conscious? Who was watching you?" Morgan crossed his arms.

"I could smell her shampoo." Jeremy smiled

"Katie's?"

"No... But she was asking for ice cream."

"Katie was asking for ice cream?" Morgan asked.

"..Yeah."

"Is there something else?" Reid raised a brow.

"No." Jeremy shook his head.

"You did good, kid." Morgan told him.

*********************************

Fleur and Hotch had gotten Richard into a separate room, Elijah was in with Jeremy.

"What's going on here?" Richard asked.

"We're questioning Jeremy in another room." Fleur told him.

"I know that. Why?" He put his hands on his hips.

"We suspect that he may know something." Hotch crossed his arms.

"About Katie?"

"From you, Mr Jacobs, we'd like to know more about your son." Hotch nodded.

Meanwhile, Elijah walked into the room where Jeremy was being held, sitting in front of him.

"What's going on? Did you find Katie?" Jeremy asked.

"Jeremy, how old are you?" Elijah asked him.

"Thirteen." He answered.

"Thirteen. Wow. You know, when I was thirteen, I was starting to notice.. Other kids too." Elijah chuckled softly,"I was curious, but I was also, like, really awkward so I found it super hard to talk to them and I, well, I found that quite frustrating."

"Why are you telling me this?" Jeremy tilted his head.

"Because I think I understand you. You're in the arcade, a pretty girl walks in and you're distracted by the scent of her hair, right?" Elijah raised a brow.

"So what?" He shrugged.

"So, you're becoming a man. Believe it or not, it happens to all of us. There's nothing wrong with that at all." Elijah shook his head.

"I never said there was."

"And these video games that you play, these cool video games allow you to explore your violent side, right? So, I mean, clearly, you're intrigued." Elijah leaned forward,"My only question is whether or not you've acted on these curiosities, you've experimented yet?"

"Shouldn't you be looking for my cousin right now?" Jeremy looked up

"I am looking for your cousin right now." Elijah told him.

"So why are you asking me these questions?" He asked.

Elijah shrugged,"Why are you avoiding them?"

Meanwhile back with Hotch and Fleur, Richard finally sighed,"What would you like to know?"

"What Jeremy's interests are." Hotch nodded.

"Computer. He likes to be on his computer. He spends hours at a time. What's going on?" Richard asked.

"Who does he socialise with?" Fleur asked.

"I don't know, kids at school, I suppose." Richard shrugged.

"You live under the same roof but can't name any of his friends?" Fleur blinked.

"He spends hours in his room, listening to that metal music I don't understand." Richard shook his head.

"Has he always been this distant with you or is this something new?" Fleur tilted her head.

"No, I guess... I guess it's always been like this. That's why I don't find it odd."

"Well, we did some checking and we found out that Jeremy, at the ripe age of thirteen has a record." Hotch spoke.

"For stealing, six months ago. We knew that." Richard nodded.

"And that didn't strike you as odd?" Hotch blinked.

"He stole earrings for a girl he liked." Richard sighed,"When I was his age I probably did the same thing."

"He must've really wanted to make an impression on her, make her feel special." Hotch crossed his arms,"So, we checked the record and they were valuable."

"We reprimanded him." Richard nodded.

"What was her name?" Hotch asked.

"Who?" Richard blinked.

"The girl Jeremy liked so much he stole for her."

"I don't know." Richard shrugged,"We're his parents, he's thirteen years old. If he hadn't been arrested, we probably wouldn't even know he was interested in girls."

Back in the room with Jeremy, Elijah felt like he was starting to make some progress.

"Hey Jeremy, do you know what I do for the FBI?" He asked.

"No." Jeremy shook his head.

"I study human behavior. Like, the way you're pushing your chair away from me? That tells me what I'm saying is making you uncomfortable." Elijah leaned forward,"Like you're trying to distance yourself from me. Maybe from what I'm capable of reading about you."

"Whatever." Jeremy shrugged.

"Case in point, you bite your inner cheek. It's a nervous tic. Like you're holding onto something. You're doing it right now. You were also doing it inside the arcade." Elijah told him,"And I think you were doing it because, maybe.. I don't know, maybe you remembered something more than what you told us."

"No, I told you everything." Jeremy insisted.

"I don't know. I don't think you told us everything." Elijah shook his head,"I think something else happened inside that arcade, something you haven't told anybody yet."

After Hotch had left Richard and Fleur, he came back, handing something to her.

"Mr Jacobs, have a seat. Did Katie and Jeremy spend a lot of time together?"

"Our families spend a lot of time together." Richard sat down,"He likes his cousin."

"Does that make you jealous?" Hotch raised a brow.

"What? Why would it?"

"Why would it?" Fleur showed the necklace, setting it on the table,"We found that in the trash. How is it that you know your six year old niece likes to read books and dress up, but you don't know the first thing about your own son?"

"Typically molesters only pay attention to the children they're grooming, ignoring even their own." Hotch crossed his arms.

"Katie wore that necklace because you told her to. Because you told her she was special. As if the sexual abuse wasn't enough." Fleur leaned against the table.

"Is that when it started?" Hotch questioned.

"When what started?" Richard looked up at Hotch.

"When you gave Katie that necklace, when she started wetting the bed, when her parents came to you and Susan wondering why their daughter locked herself in her room. Was that when it started? Is that where the molestation started?" Hotch spat.

"This is ridiculous." Richard rose from his seat.

"You couldn't help yourself, could you?" Hotch walked towards him.

"You're crazy." Richard pointed.

"Like so many little girls before."

"I want to get out of here." Richard pointed towards Fleur.

"You started spending more time with her and telling her she's special." Hotch continued.

"I'm not listening to you."

"You knew it was sick, your brother's own daughter!"

"Shut up!" Richard shouted.

"Did she outgrow your prefernce?" Hotch pointed.

"Shut up!" Richard pushed Hotch back.

"Did she get too old for you?" Hotch questioned.

"No!" Richard took a deep breath,"No. I may have done things that you couldn't possibly understand.. But I would never hurt Katie."

Hotch nodded slowly before he lead Fleur away from Richard as he sank into his chair.

"Whoever ripped the necklace off Katie did it in a rage and he just seems.. Broken." Hotch sighed before leaving the room.

"You know, for probably the most stressful day in your life, I haven't seen you light one cigarette." Fleur turned to Richard.

"I quit.. Over a month ago." Paul shook his head.

Fleur tilted her head before she went to find the others, something wasn't adding up. JJ and Morgan were stood discussing something, the other family members nearby

"I don't think the aunt is telling us everything and this could get dicey." Fleur told them as she walked by, going to the family,"Susan."

"What is it?" Beth shot up.

"I need to speak with Susan." Fleur sighed.

"Why? What happened?" Paul asked.

"Did you find her?" Beth questioned.

"No, not yet." Fleur shook her head.

"Is it about Jeremy?"

"Richard?"

"No, I need to speak with you." Fleur gently held Susan, leading her out,"Can you come this way?"

"What are you doing? What's this about?" Susan asked.

"You used to work in retail?" Fleur turned to Susan.

"I'm sorry. How is that.." Susan shook her head.

"You mentioned it earlier." Fleur crossed her arms.

"So what?"

"What you didn't tell me is that you used to work in this mall. Years ago."

"What does that have to do with anything?" Susan crossed her arms.

Richard and Beth were shouting at Susan, curious on why she was taken to the side.

"You know this building like the back of your hand. Earlier, you made sure to separate from the group." Fleur sighed.

Susan was quiet, Beth and Paul still shouting at her as Morgan and JJ held them back.

Fleur then took Susan to a room with just them,"What did you do with Katie?"

"Why would you ask me that?" Susan looked up at Fleur as she sat down.

"You and Richard have been playing happy family when in fact, you've been separated. Why else hadn't you realised he hasn't had a cigarette in over a month? He has no use for a new lighter." Fleur began.

"Richard and I have been trying to work things out." Susan told her.

"Did you really believe that getting rid of that little girl would take away his sickness?"

Susan bit her lip,"You're not making a bit of sense."

"Did it occur to you last week? After you saw on the news that a little girl was snatched from a local mall and found dead three days later? Did you duct tape her mouth too? You know if you do that to someone that has asthma, they can die? But I guess you already figured that out, didn't you?" Fleur tried to keep her cool.

"This was not supposed to happen to my family." Susan shook her head.

"It didn't just happen, Susan. You took her. A six year old, vulnerable child who trusted you. Who trusted your husband. You need to tell me where she is." Fleur pointed.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Susan looked away.

Fleur walked to the side before coming back with a messed up doll,"This is how Katie sees herself. Self loathing. Dirty. Disgusting. This is what your husband made her feel. Those nights when she'd stay at your house and he would sneak into her room and tell her not to make a sound."

"No, please don't do this."

"Do you have any idea how terrified she must have been? How confused?"

"No."

"While you lay awake protecting an animal who will always have those urges. And always has."

"No, no. Dont, please don't."

"There's nothing left for you to protect, Susan. Instead of shielding her from more pain, you blamed her for your own." Fleur pointed.

"No, no. No, I didn't!" Susan shook her head.

"Yes you did. You have robbed Katie of her childhood. Are you going to steal the rest of her life from her as well?" Fleur scoffed.

"No, enough!" Susan yelled.

"Where is she, Susan?"

*********************************

Susan relented, telling them where Katie was hidden. Luckily, they managed to revive her and she was on her way to the hospital as the others stood outside the mall.

"Is Katie going to be alright?" Jeremy asked the boys.

"She will eventually." Morgan nodded.

"I heard her call my mom's name... That's what I remembered earlier." Jeremy sighed.

"We understand, kid. It's your mother." Elijah patted his shoulder.

"Whats going to happen to me now?" Jeremy looked up.

"I don't know, Jeremy, but we're gonna make sure you're alright. Okay?" Reid assured him.

"Come on." Morgan patted his back.

*********************************

"Another job well done." Elijah hummed as they got on the plane.

"I'm just... In shock that Susan would do that." Fleur sat down.

"Some women will do, well, anything for 'love'." Elijah sighed,"Even if it means protecting a nonce and nearly killing a child."

"Nonce." Reid chuckled,"Funny."

"Excuse me?"

"It's such a funny word." Reid hummed.

"You've got a lot of those." Morgan nodded.

"You both know what a nonce is, right?" Elijah blinked.

"Yeah, totally... Like, a cool guy." Morgan shrugged.

"Okay, does anyone have a different answer?" Elijah sighed.

"Like a mean person?" JJ blinked.

"Closer than Morgan."

"So what does it mean?"

"It's another word for a pedophile." Elijah leaned back in his chair,"You're welcome."

"..Forget what I said." Reid pointed.

"Have you got any fun words, Fleur?" Elijah turned to her.

"Let me think... Soutien-gorge." Fleur hummed.

"What the bloody hell does that mean?"

"Have a guess."

"Cheesecake." Morgan pointed.

"Very far from cheesecake." Fleur laughed.

"Say it again." Elijah shook his head.

"Soutien-gorge." Fleur spoke slower.

"Nope. I've got nothing."

"Em?" Fleur turned to her.

"Boys, it means bra." Emily chuckled.

"Oh- I tried those once. I didn't like it." Elijah shook his head.

"We don't like them either." Fleur sighed.

"Why were you wearing a bra?" Morgan turned to Elijah.

"Oh, a story for another day." He waved him off.

"He lives a secret life." Reid chuckled.

"Hun, you know I don't." Elijah shook his head.

"I bet he does." Emily nodded.

"We'll find out eventually."

"Hey, you're the one that did undercover work." Elijah pointed at Emily.

"I did." Emily chuckled.

"If anyone has a secret life, it's you." Elijah then looked at Fleur,"Or you."

"Me?" Fleur blinked.

"Dont think I forgot that you also did undercover work." Elijah hummed,"You told me on our first day."

"I have secrets you could never get." Fleur hummed.

"I'll find them out one day, dearest." Elijah shrugged.

"I'm sure you will hun." Fleur smiled.
