Chapter 23 - Scared to Death

"Gideon left everything, except the photographs." Garcia sighed, holding a box outside of Gideon's office.

"Garcia, darling, is there a box under his desk?" Elijah asked.

"There is." Garcia nodded, grabbing another box.

"Good, can I have it?"

Garcia nodded as she handed down the box.

"He always said the photographs were like his family." Reid muttered, staring down at the letters.

"What should we do with all this?" Garcia asked.

"I don't even remember him taking this from me." Elijah rummaged through the box he had.

"Is that my gameboy?" Fleur gasped.

"Oh my god, it is." Elijah took it out,"And the headband Garcia got for my birthday."

Fleur took her console, putting it in her drawer while JJ walked over.

"Guys." JJ nodded to the Conference Room.

"Lovely." Elijah sighed, putting on the pink headband as he walked to the room.

"Okay, we have four victims in Oregon. Two male, two female.." JJ began handing out files once everyone was sat down.

"I've got this." Hotch stepped forward.

"Sure." JJ nodded.

"I know we've all been wondering what this is all about. And, you know I've known Jason for many years and I can tell you, I have no idea. But it doesn't even matter. What matters is we're here and we're gonna continue." Hotch began," mPortland field office uncovered a mass grave with three bodies killed six months ago. Nearby, they found another body. Causes of death range from burning alive to asphyxiation. No sexual assault."

"Well, the torture is clearly sadistic." Morgan shrugged.

"But the lack of a sexual preference is going to make it hard to tell whether the Unsub is male or female." Reid nodded.

"Typically female serial killers stick to the same MO. It looks like this guy is all over the place." Fleur nodded.

"The most recent victim is Jenny Wittman, asphyxiated, discovered yesterday." Hotch told them.

"How long was she missing?" Reid asked.

"She was never reported missing." Hotch shook his head.

"What about the others?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Only one." Hotch answered.

"One of four?"

"Rick Holland was reported missing nine months ago, but the search was called off." JJ showed a picture of the man.

"The family discovered his car at the train station but more importantly, they received at the train station but more importantly, they received e-mails from him saying that he needed time to think things out." Hotch explained.

"And his family bought that?" Morgan blinked.

"I guess the alternative is too hard to accept." Hotch sighed.

"Reaching out could be a sign of remorse." Reid shrugged.

"Psychopaths don't apologize for their behavior, this guy's covering his tracks." Hotch shook his head.

"Well, it's working." Elijah flicked through the file.

"So there's three victims he buried in one grave and then only Jenny Wittman in the other." Emily pointed.

"You thinking it's a pattern?" Morgan raised a brow.

"It's hard to tell." Emily shrugged.

"If there is, it's one down and two to go." Hotch sighed.

*********************************

"Can we go over what Portland found?" Hotch asked.

"One female and two male victims found buried together in the same grave. All twenty-five to thirty. All had been dead six months." JJ handed out the files.

"That sounds like three different MOs." Emily looked up.

"Gary Taylor, the Phantom Sniper, was all over the place, just like this guy. He changed his MO as his need to control the situation changed." Reid explained.

"What about the fresh grave?" Hotch asked.

"A female, twenty-four, dead nearly 48 hours, she was asphyxiated." JJ told him.

"It's a good thing this guys dump sites been compromised." Morgan nodded.

"As soon as the Unsub knows that, he may feel pressure that we're on to him. It could push him to make a mistake." Emily agreed.

"Hey, you. Down here." Garcia whispered through the call.

Elijah chuckled after looking around,"I knew that."

"You're lucky you're handsome, Eli." Garcia hummed,"Attention team members, this killer guy continues to stoop to an all time low of lows by posing as his victims."

"Well, that's messed up." Elijah blinked.

"He's also manipulated two of the families into thinking that everything is okay, even after they were reported missing. One of the fake e-mails was from their daughter. She said she'd met this guy and was taking him to her favourite place, Australia, for a few weeks. The family contacted the Australian authorities after too much time had passed."

"This guy sure knows a lot of personal information about his victims." Morgan crossed his arms.

"How'd he get access to their e-mail accounts?" Fleur asked.

"The screen name was the same but the domain was different. The families never noticed." Garcia sighed,"When I find more pieces of the puzzle, you'll know. Garcia, out."

"This guys creative. Let's review the details one more time just to make sure that he haven't missed anything." Hotch sighed.

*********************************

"You must be the BAU." The officer held his hand out,"Special Agent Bill Calvert."

"Hi, Jennifer Jareau. This is SSA Aaron Hotchner. These are Agents Morgan, Prentiss, Howards, Deans and Dr Reid." JJ introduced them all.

"I appreciate your help on ths case." He nodded.

"So you're from Boston?" Morgan hummed.

"The accents pretty hard to miss in Oregon, right?" Calvert chuckled.

"We'd like to take a look around Jenny Wittmans apartment." Hotch sighed.

"I'd take you myself but I'm waiting to meet her family, so I'll have another agent drive you."

"Thank you." Hotch nodded.

"I'll stay behind and work victimology." Emily told him.

"Great. I could use some extra hands. We'll call you if you find anything." Hotch told the girls as he walked out.

*********************************

"Wittman's place is on the fourth floor." Reid told them as they entered the apartment building, walking up to the elevator with Morgan and Elijah,"Can you get in there?"

"I'll meet you guys up there." Hotch nodded slowly, turning to the stairs.

"Yeah, me too." Fleur tilted her head,"Think of it as a race."

"I like that idea." Elijah hummed as he stepped into the elevator.

"See ya." Fleur waved, chasing after Hotch.

The three others stood in the elevator as it slowly rose... But suddenly, it stopped. Morgan looked around before he jumped up and down.

"Don't do that." Reid pointed.

"Why isn't it moving?" Elijah asked as he bounced as well.

"I don't know." Reid shook his head.

Morgan then turned to the panel of buttons, repeatedly pressing the one for the fourth floor.

"Don't- Stop. Don't!" Reid pointed.

"What? What's the problem?" Morgan asked.

"Because there's six elevator related deaths per year, not to mention 10,000 injuries that require hospitalisation. Chill out." Reid waved his hands.

"They sound like pretty good odds to me." Morgan shrugged,"What, are you scared, Reid?"

"I'm not scared."

"You're scared, aren't you?" Morgan chuckled,"What if I push this? What if I push this-"

"I don't wanna be in an elevator with you, to be honest-" Reid began.

But that's when the elevator fell, maybe down a few floors.

"Woah- Woah.." Elijah clung onto Reid.

"Hit the- Hit the alarm." Reid pointed.

Elijah reached forward and pressed the button. The alarm sounded, but nothing else happened.

"Push it! It's not a pull!" Reid shouted.

"I'm- Push, pull, push, pull." Elijah pressed the button in and out,"I'm doing it! Nothing's happening."

"Pry- Pry the door open!" Reid held onto the wall of the elevator,"Derek!"

Morgan tried pulling the doors open, to no avail,"It's stuck, man!"

The lift then shook again, Morgan falling back to elevator walls.

"No, no, no. Not today." He shook his head.

"You bastard- You aren't taking me today!" Elijah rapidly began pressed the button,"Not then, not now!"

"Hotch.." Reid whimpered, holding onto the elevator still.

"Hotch!" Morgan shouted.

"Fleur, are you there? We're stuck!" Elijah kicked the elevator door.

That's when the door opened and Morgan ran out,"Hallelujah."

"Was that the alarm?" Hotch asked as he walked over,"Are you guys alright?"

"I'll get back to you on that." Reid slowly walked out the elevator.

"And that is why I don't go on elevators." Fleur pointed.

"I think I saw God again." Elijah shook his head.

"Again?" Morgan held his chest.

"Again." Elijah nodded, putting his hand on Reid's shoulder.

"Take a breather everyone." Fleur told them, rubbing Morgan's back.

"We nearly died." Elijah pointed.

"Note to selves. Don't take the lift."

"Ever."

The apartment manager, who was at the apartment, opened the door and walked in,"FBI was already in here two days ago. Didn't find anything."

"We're from the Behavioral Analysis Unit." Reid told him.

"What's that mean?"

"That means we study human behavior, not just evidence." Reid explained,"It helps us to determine why this killer chose this victim."

"The place has a lived in feel to it." Fleur pointed.

"It looks like she spent most of her free time here." Elijah agreed.

"No messages on the answering machine." Reid looked at the phone.

"Hey guys, come look at this." Morgan called them into the bathroom,"There's bath products all around the tub but she never turned on this shower."

"What makes you say that?" The manager asked.

Morgan moved the shower door to reveal cardboard boxes,"It's got nothing but boxes inside. She used it for storage."

"Did anything ever strike you as odd about Jenny?" Fleur turned to the manager.

"You know what? When she moved in here, two months ago, she walked up and down those stairs a hundred times." The manager chuckled,"She wouldn't use the elevator."

"I don't blame her." Morgan scoffed.

Elijah sighed as they walked out of the bathroom,"Okay, so we know Jenny didn't like tight spaces or the elevator. What else do we know?"

"We know that he preys on people that are new to the city, with no strong social ties." Reid added.

"And Jenny fits the model, she's an easy target." Morgan sighed.

"And he's betting that she won't be missed." Hotch crossed his arms.

*********************************

"Okay, we know this guy used Wildwood Trail as his personal graveyard for six months." Morgan began,"That site's been blown for him now, which means he's been forced to change part of his MO."

"Which won't be easy for somebody who thrives on being in control. The reason that he's gotten away with these first three murders is that he's been meticulous at every stage, from how he closes his victims to their torture and their burial." Hotch explained.

"To us, his victims appear to be non-specific. Other than being new to Portland, all they seemed to share was a tortuous death." Emily crossed her arms.

"But you think the UnSub chooses them for another reason, too?" Calvert asked.

"We think so." She nodded.

"The tortures lack a sexual component, which is incredibly rare. I think it's more about, not necessarily about exerting power, but more like overcompensating for a lack of it." Reid spoke.

"This guy craves control. And he's coming from a place of weakness, trying to demonstrate strength." Elijah shook his head,"Now, we see this a lot in Unsubs who have been abused."

"The lack of sexual assault could be as simple as the fact that he's impotent, something that he's trying to hide." Fleur hummed.

"A man this obsessed with control most likely feels powerless in his everyday life, so he would crave stability, security. He's most likely married." Emily explained,"If he is impotent, he could keep up appearances by adopting children."

"And someone this methodical has every moment planned. If he is captured, he'd most likely take his own life rather than give up any sort of control." Reid nodded.

"The victims' lack of defensive wounds suggests that they willingly put themselves in danger. So, someone of authority, or otherwise easily trusted, put them up to this." Morgan added.

"Also the victims families were led to believe their loved ones were alive and well through emails written by this murderer." Fleur sighed.

"He's calculating and he's intelligent. And we're gonna have to do something that he's not expectibg." Hotch told them.

"Like what?" Calvert asked.

"Like warn his potential victims." Elijah nodded.

*********************************

"Local ID'd the body, it's Patrick Walker." Calvert sighed as they walked away from the newest crime scene,"He's got deep abrasions and bruising on the neck and shoulders."

"I'm gonna go see if they found anything else in the water." Morgan nodded as he walked off.

"I know his landlady called you about this guy missing, but what makes you think this is related?" Calvert asked.

"He fits the profile of our victims." Elijah answered,"He's the same age, lives alone, new to the city."

"But he wasn't buried like everyone else."

"No, you found the Unsub's dump site." Emily pointed,"He couldn't go back to the trail, that forced him to do something different."

"They found a rope at the bottom of the river, but that's probably been there for years. A couple feet out they found this. It's a shepherd's crook. Life guards and rescue workers use them." Morgan walked over, holding out the crook.

"I bet he didn't use it for safety." Elijah shook his head.

"No. Officer, thank you." Morgan handed the crook to the Coast Guard Officer.

"We haven't seen any evidence of a struggle with the other bodies. This is the first one." Calvert pointed.

"Do you remember any open cases involving suspicious drownings?" Emily asked.

"Since I've been at Portland, we've had two or three." He nodded,"I can call the office, get the files to your other agents, see if they can find anything."

"Thank you." Emily hummed while Morgan called Hotch.

"Hotchner."

"Hey, that landlady Prentiss spoke to was right to be worried. We just found Patrick Walker dead in a river." Morgan told him.

"And it was exactly what you predicted, he found a new place go dump the body." Emily sighed.

"Fire, hanging, asphyxiation and now we've got a drowning." Hotch walked up to the board.

"I think it's someone who's afraid of drowning." Reid realised.

"What do you mean?" Hotch turned.

"Yeah, it hit me when Morgan and Eli freaked out when we were stuck in the elevator." Reid nodded.

"You got stuck in an elevator?" Emily chuckled.

"Excuse me, we freaked?" Elijah took the phone from Morgan.

"That's not important. Here's what is." Reid waved his hand,"If you look at the MOS of the victims, what do they all have in common? They could all be classified as anxiety disorders. It's right out of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. It lists five subtypes of phobias."

"Most of these are environmental and situational." Hotch crossed his arms.

"Exactly."

"So, it's all about fear." Hotch shook his head,"These people are being killed by their fears."

*********************************

"So, what happened?" Garcia hummed.

"Love, there's nothing to know. I hit a couple of buttons, it got stuck. That's it. What do you want?" Elijah sighed.

"And?"

"Okay, I freaked out. A little bit." Elijah admitted.

Garcia burst out laughing, shaking her head.

"Listen here, you little busy bee. I know you traced that number for me five minutes ago, so hand it over." Elijah pointed.

"Yes, changing the subject. It's listed as the Goodman Institute."

"What the bloody hell is that?" Elijah blinked.

"I have beyond Googled this thing. To the untrained eye it looks totally legit, cause someone went to great lengths to make the website decent. The articles are well-written, but as my brilliant and bespectacled eyes can see they all lead to dead ends." Garcia nodded.

"Then what is it?"

"A bogus business that claims to be the leading researcher in behavioural therapy. There's no tax records, no business license, no evidence it actually exists. It's supposed to be run by a guy named Dr Barry Goodman. It says here he's renowned in curing dear and phobias. And get this? He has an online questionnaire, asks all kinds of things about phobias."

"So, these victims fill it out and he plucks them off the screen." Elijah sighed,"Garcia, get that over to Hotch."

"Way ahead of you, fraidy cat." Garcia hummed.

"Of course you are, darling." Elijah sighed.

*********************************

"Look at this, guys. He calls them phobias instead Anxiety Disorders." Reid pointed.

"Yeah, this guy's either an amateur or he studied psychology in the 80's." Emily nodded.

"His phrasing of the question are clinical. This guys a professional." Fleur sighed.

"He's able to pick the perfect victims. 'Are you close with your family?' 'Easy making friends?'. Answer yes and you're spared the torture." Hotch shook his head.

"We've figured out how he chooses his victims but how does that gets us his real name?" Calvart asked.

"Alright, let's review. JJ, can you get Garcia?" Hotch looked over at her.

JJ leaned over and called Garcia through the main phone.

"I think the guys a real psychiatrist." Morgan nodded.

"Also afraid of being alone, so he's most likely married." Fleur shrugged.

"May have adopted children." Elijah added.

"Why?" Calvert raised a brow.

"Because the tortures lack a sexual component." He shrugged.

"Right, he might be impotent." Calvert sighed.

"Hey, guys." Garcia spoke up.

"Also, if he's desperate for a sense of community, he'd definitely have kids." Reid added.

"Okay, I'm crossing Portland doctors with adoptions."

"And given the obsession to control his victims with torture, he might've been abused." Hotch pointed.

"Okay, juvenile records are gonna be sealed, so you'll need to give me a minute." Garcia told him as she typed.

"He uses antiquated terms, like phobias, so he's most likely in his forties." Emily nodded.

"And the Creep of the Moment award goes to... One forty-three years old, Dr Stanley Howard, psychiatrist." Garcia hummed.

"This guy was killing his own patients?" Calvert blinked.

"No, Stan Howard's smarter than that." Hotch shook his head,"That's why he created Goodman and the research ruse."

"He's married to Jane Howard, has one eight year old daughter, Jessica. He started a centre for abused kids."

"Probably because he could relate." Elijah sighed.

"One good deeds not fortifying his karma sufficiently. It looks like his practice shut down last year." Garcia typed.

"Right about the time the killing started." Hotch nodded.

"He still has a lease on his old office building. City permits were pulled due to renovation, but what do you know it's been delayed. Yikes! His bank records show a seriously depleted savings account." Garcia told them.

"So, he's keeping up appearances. Where's the building?" Hotch asked.

"427 Cedars Avenue."

"That's not far from here." Calvert realized.

"Alright, let's go check the building. You three-" Hotch pointed at the girls.

"Talk to the family. Got it." Emily nodded.

"Thanks Garcia." JJ sighed.

*********************************

"Why do they always have to seem so normal?" Emily sighed as JJ knocked on the door.

"Who are you?" Jessica opened the door

"Hi, I'm Emily and this is Fleur and Jennifer." Emily introduced them.

"Okay- You never open the door unless you know who it is." A woman, Jane, rushed up to the door.

"Hello Ma'am, we're here with the FBI." JJ took out her badge.

"Where's your husband?" Fleur asked as Jane let them inside.

"He's with a patient." Jane told her.

"No, he shut down his practice a year ago." Emily shook her head.

"Excuse me?" Jane blinked,"No, he wouldn't do something like that without taking to me first."

"He referred his patients to other doctors and allowed his license to expire." Fleur sighed.

"What's happening?" Jane asked as they sat down.

"Has Stan been acting strange lately?" Fleur raised a brow.

"He's had some issues since his mother died last year. He never went to her funeral, but they were never close." Jane shook her hesd,"Stan always said it was because of her that he became a psychiatrist."

*********************************

"This is 427 Cedars Avenue, where's the office?" Reid blinked as they walked up to the abandoned site.

"He wasn't luring victims to an empty lot." Calvert shook his head.

Hotch then called Emily,"Prentiss, we're at the office. The building is gone... Right, okay." He signalled for the others to follow him.

"What do you mean it's gone?" Jane questioned.

"We need to figure out where Stan's been going everyday." Emily sighed.

"I don't know." She shook her head.

"Where would he go, Mrs Howard?" Fleur leaned forward.

"My family has commercial property downtown. Maybe.." Jane trailed off.

*********************************

Elijah and Hotch ran up the stairs, chasing after Stan.

"Elijah, slow down. Tell Reid, Morgan and Calvert that we found him." Hotch pointed.

"Reid, it's Elijah. We found him." Elijah spoke into his comms,"Calk the fire department, he's headed to the roof."

"Right, go." Hotch nodded for Elijah to head up.

"Dr Howard, I'm Elijah Deans, I'm with the FBI." Elijah put his gun away.

"Don't ask me to come down." Stan spoke, standing on the edge of the roof.

"We found at least fifteen people dead. It's over." Elijah shook his head.

"They sacrificed themselves for science."

"You know this is the easy way out. If you cone down, we'd like to talk to you." Elijah told him,"You know, you'll never get over your fear by killing yourself or your patients."

"Most people go into law enforcement because they want to help others." Stan sighed.

"Tell us where Missy is."

Stan took his glasses off,"I think your greatest fear is that you can't save everyone. It is worse than I thought."

Stan then turned, leaning to the side and fell off of the building. Landing on the concrete. Elijah stood by the railing, looking down at Stan. He'd tried to save Stan but.. He couldn't.

*********************************

After they had saved the latest victim, the team got on the plane. Fleur had sat down on the couch.

"Hey, babygirl." Morgan hummed, sitting beside her.

"Hey." Fleur hummed, looking at him.

"So, I've got a question for you."

"Lil ole' me?"

"Yes you, sweetcheeks." Morgan winked,"How would you feel if I stayed the night?"

"Just staying?"

"Well, I'm sure we could do.. Other things."

Fleur chuckled,"Maybe."

"Only maybe?" Morgan raised a brow.

Fleur nodded towards Elijah who was watching from afaf.

"What are you looking at, pretty boy?" Morgan asked.

"Nothing." Elijah shook his head.

"Back it up." Fleur pointed.

"Hm." Elijah nodded slowly, turning away.

"We'll talk when we're home." Fleur nodded to Morgan.

"Your home, right?"

"My home." Fleur hummed

"Good." Morgan kissed her cheek.
