Chapter 19 - Open Season

"I love ladies night." Elijah hummed, sipping his lemonade.

"We know you do." Fleur chuckled.

"Emily is already talking to a boy." Garcia blinked.

"We've only been here five minutes." Elijah shook his head.

"Yeah, but look at her. She broke away from the group, the guy saw her alone, felt confident and made his move." JJ shrugged.

"She's coming back- With a man." Elijah looked away.

"Must be serious." Fleur muttered.

"Ladies, and Elijah, this is Brad. A real FBI Agebt." Emily hummed as she walked over with their drinks.

"Oh- Really?" JJ hummed.

"Really." Emily nodded.

"That's so exciting." Fleur brought her hands to her cheeks.

"What's it like at Quantico?" Garcia asked, intentionally mispronouncing it.

"It's quite impressive." Brad nodded.

"What department are you in?" JJ raised a brow in?"

"That's classified." He hummed.

Fleur giggled slightly, looking at Brad,"Must be really tough keeping all those secrets."

"Well, you know, it's a skill, like everything else. Carpenters are good at building stuff, measuring. FBI Agents are good at keeping secrets and kicking criminal ass." Brad explained.

"Well, someone has to do it." Elijah smirked,"Oh, do you have to carry your gun?"

"And your badge? Everywhere you go?" Emily pointed.

"Affirmative."

"Can we see it?" JJ asked.

"See what?" Brad turned.

"Your badge." Fleur looked him up and down.

"Please?" Garcia looked up at him.

"You see, I would but that's-" Brad began.

"Classfied." They all spoke at once.

"Tell me Brad, does it look anything like this?" Emily brought out her badge.

"Or this?" JJ pulled out her's.

"Or maybe this?" Garcia held out her's.

"Or maybe even these?" Fleur held up her badge, nudging Elijah to get his.

Elijah smirked, holding up his badge as well,"This must be really embarrassing for you, darling."

Brad looked around at everyone before he silently walked away.

Fleur laughed and shook her head,"I love embarrassing men."

"Criminal ass. It's a tough job." Elijah took a sip of his lemonade as JJ went to answer her phone.

"I am so blogging about this later." Garcia pointed.

"Emily, you are officially in my top three favourite ladies." Elijah told her.

"Why thank you." Emily hummed.

"Sorry, ladies." JJ sighed as she walked back over.

"You're joking." Fleur looked at her. She grabbed her drink and quickly downed it

"I'm not taking off this makeup." Elijah crossed his arms,"Gideon can say what he likes, but I spent an hour on this."

"It looks amazing." Garcia nodded.

"Thank you, darling." Elijah smiled at her.

*********************************

"A year ago, victims and their vehicles disappeared from Washington State. They were found over two hundred miles away in the remote woods of Idaho. Courtney Jacobs, twenty four and Shane Everett, twenty five. Autopsy revealed similar entry and exit wounds through the chest." JJ showed the pictures of the victims on the screen

"Ballistics?" Morgan raised a brow.

"No bullets were found." JJ shook her head.

"It looks like they were out there for a long time before they were killed." Emily pointed out.

"At least six or seven days." JJ nodded.

"Well, what happened in that week?" Elijah asked.

"I do not want to know." Garcia sat down.

"Look at the way they're dressed." Reid walked up to yhe board,"They didn't voluntarily go into the woods like that."

"Yeah, neither did this man." JJ showed a picture of another man,"Found yesterday with similar wounds. There's still no ID."

"Okay, so I'm going to look over missing persons in Washington." Garcia shook her head.

"Look everywhere. We don't know where this victim came from. We only know where he ended up." Gideon sighed.

"Yes, sir." Garcia walked out.

"Kills both males and females.." Reid leaned against the drawers as he thought.

"Victims were found with their clothes on. No degradation, no experimentation. Doesn't look like he's interested in eather." Hotch shook his head as he flicked through the file.

"A serial killer with no secual preference? That'd be a first." Fleur sighed, holding her head.

"Broken nose, and bark embedded in his face." Elijah picked up a photo of the latest victim,"It looks like he ran into a tree."

"Now how do you miss a huge tree?" Morgan asked.

"Too busy looking behind you." Elijah sat the photo down.

"Speaking from experience?" Morgan muttered to Elijah, gaining a brief glare.

"None of these are defensive wounds." Reid shook his head.

"Courtney Jacobs' hands were torn up." Emily sighed.

"Shane Everett's only got one shoe on. It's like he ran right out of the other one." Morgan added.

"He sustained multiple injuries but still kept going." Hotch shook his head.

"Only one thing you run that hard for. Your life." Gideon sighed.

"My head is killing me." Fleur leaned her head on the desk.

"You downed your drink. Of course your head is going to be sore." Elijah shook his head.

Fleur waved him off,"Babe?"

"Yes?"

"Do you have any headache meds?" Fleur sighed.

"I should do, just in case." Morgan nodded,"Do you want me to get them?"

Fleur nodded,"Oui."

"You got it, princess." Morgan stood up, walking out.

"Elijah." Gideon called him over.

"Gideon?" Elijah nodded, his heart sinking.

"Can you maybe lose the eye makeup? It's a little.. Too bright. You get me?"

"With all due respect, sir, nobody else seems to have an issue with it." Elijah tried to keep himself calm.

"It's just flashy, it's not needed-"

"Deans." Hotch looked up,"I think it just needs fixed, the eyeliner is smudged." He got up and left the room.

Elijah smiled softly, walking back to the table.

"I think it looks fine." Reid gave him a small smile.

"Thanks, darling." Elijah hugged him.

Reid hummed and hugged back.

"I love you." Elijah whispered before he left to fix his makeup.

Reid smiled and watched Elijah as he left.

*********************************

"Transporting young, fit victims from Washington to Idaho poses huge risks." Hotch shook his head.

"Must have a good reason to chance getting pulled over or having the victims escape." JJ handed out files.

"It says here a hundred or so people a year go missing in Idaho's wilderness. With millions of acres to cover, a third of them are never found." Reid told them.

"Sounds like the reason as to why this place." Fleur opened her file.

"Well, it offers privacy and the possibility the body will never be discovered." Gideon nodded.

"An area this remote and rugged suggests that the offender is more comfortable in the woods. Something like a second home." Morgan looked up

"My grandfather retired to the French Alps. He lived there until he died. There was a good ten year stretch where he didn't come down from teh mountain." Emily told them,"He had no running water, no electricity and all his food, supplies, everything, it all came from the land."

"You spend a lot of time up there?" Fleur turned.

"Yeah. Whenever we were in France, which was a lot." Emily nodded.

"I'm suprised we never crossed paths before we actually did." Fleur sighed.

"Yeah." Emily nodded slowly.

"Guess who's getting a gold star?" Garcia hummed as she appeared on the computer screen.

"Well that would be you, baby girl, if you've got some good news for us." Morgan nodded.

"Well, I started my missing persons search in Spokane county, and wouldn't you know, there's been ten in the last five years, all in their early 20's." Garcia informed them,"And isn't this interesting? It's always in teh spring, and their cars are never recovered. And don't fret, I'm searching for the cars too."

"Anything else?" Morgan asked.

"Oh, local PD identified the latest victim through dental records. His name is Alex Harrison, he's from Washington." Garcia told him.

"Where was he last seen?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Family statements say he was travelling to work in Spokane, and both victims from last year were travelling outside of Spokane too." Garcia nodded.

"All victims headed to the city." Morgan leaned back in his chair.

"And none of them reached their final destination." Emily sighed.

"Garcia?" Hotch turned to her.

"Already on it. There are four major roadways into Spokane. Highways 395, 195 and Highway 2. There's also Interstate 90." She told him.

"Were there any police reports or roadside assistance calls from those highways?" Emily turned.

"You're gonna know that as soon as I do." Garcia nodded as she signed off.

"Okay we've got two locations." Hotch checked his phone.

"I'm happy to go to Idaho." Gideon shrugged,"The woods is like your second home, right Prentiss?"

"Yes sir." Emily nodded.

"Hey, Reid. How about you go to Spokane?" Morgan suggested,"I could use the fresh air."

"I also need fresh air." Fleur raised her hand.

"I'm sure you do." Elijah hummed.

"It's true." Fleur nodded.

Elijah smiled,"I know. It'll sort that headache out."

"Exactly." Fleur pointed.

"If you'd like you can come with me." Reid looked down at Elijah.

"I was waiting for you to ask." Elijah nodded.

Reid hummed and gently squeezed his hand.

"We'll touch base every couple of hours." Hotch nodded.

"I'll call you when we get on the mountain." Gideon told him.

*********************************

"We've got two male and one female victim. All about the same age but from different socioeconomic backgrounds. The only thing they seem to have in common is they were travelling in the same city." Hotch sighed.

"And broken bones." Elijah pointed,"There's a hairline fracture in the wrist, a sprained ankle and a broken nose."

"Also early autopsy reports show soft clean tissue damage and deep puncture wounds to the major organs." Reid explained.

"Bullets flare out when they hit the body. It's got to be something else." Hotch shook his head.

"Whatever weapon was used cut completely through the front of the chest and went right out the back. It's interesting given the point of entry, that each victim had two wounds." Reid sat down.

"It's always two." Elijah sighed, looking through the file.

"Raymond Schaeffer." The sheriff walked in, holding out his hand,"You must be Agent Jareau."

"Nice to meet you." JJ shook his hand,"This is Special Agent Aaron Hotchner, Special Agent Elijah Deans and Dr Spencer Reid. This is Sheriff Raymond Schaeffer."

"Well, I see you're getting settled." Schaeffer nodded.

"Thank you for the space." Hotch turned to him.

"Thank you for flying out."

"Has Alex Harrison's family been notified yet?" JJ asked.

"Not yet. Parents were divorced, he lived with his father. I was waiting for your unit to arrive." Schaeffer told them,"Could use the company."

"I'm happy to come along. Hotch, I'll let you know what I find." JJ hummed, leaving the room.

"Thanks." Hotch nodded to her.

*********************************

"How was the drive up the mountain?" The ranger asked as they got out of the SUV.

"Before or after the flat tire?" Fleur sighed.

"That good, huh?" She chuckled softly,"I'm Lizzie Evans, the Head Ranger."

"Hi, Agent Prentiss, this is Agent Morgan and Agent Howards. Agent Gideon is still in town." Emily introduced them.

"You must be exhausted from the trip, but we need to keep moving." Lizzie shook her head,"We want to be out of here by nightfall."

"Then by all means, after you." Emily nodded.

Lizzie then lead them all into the woods, walking amongst the trees.

"How long have you been a ranger?" Morgan asked.

"Five years now. But I've lived in these woods my whole life." Lizzie hummed.

"Growing up here help you do your job?"

"Look around. Do you see or hear anything right now?" Lizzie asked.

"No." Fleur shook her head.

"There's a black bear about twenty-five yards to your right." Lizzie nodded.

The trio looked to their right and sure enough, there was the black bear walking past through the shrubbery.

"How long before we're able to do that?" Emily blinked.

"Depends on how well you use your insticts." Lizzie shrugged as they continued walking.

"Well this gives new meaning to the word 'remote'." Hotch sighed.

"Yeah, it would be awfully hard to find this location if you weren't familiar with the area." Emily agreed,"There must only be a handful of people that know the terrain well enough to survive."

"Boot tracks." Lizzie pointed as they arrived at the crime scene,"They're the same tread, but they're different sizes."

"Well, there's at least two people that know this terrain." Morgan crossed his arms.

"Okay so, this is where Alex Harrison's body was found. Derek, from this particular spot, there are areas of higher ground that look down to where the victim died." Fleur pointed up the hill.

"Yeah, I've got a perfect view of you through the trees right here." He nodded.

"Those are basic tactics that hunters use. They use vantage points to watch their prey." Lizzie told them.

"If these are tactics hunters use.." Emily began.

"They were precise enough to cover each other and take out their prey at the same time." Morgan walked back over,"If both victims had two wounds, could be one for each offender."

"I think we know how Alex Harrison died." Emily sighed as she looked out into the forest below.

*********************************

"We're looking for at least two offenders in good physical condition." Hotch began as both groups delivered the profile.

"They'd have to be fit to make it through this terrain." Gideon nodded.

"And nobody would go that deep into the woods without backup." Morgan crossed his arms.

"Killing teams are like most partnerships. One weak, one strong." Gideon shrugged.

"These men haven't exhibited any sexual interest in their victims. So they're either developmentally prepubescent." Hotch told then.

"Or they could be related." Reid continued,"Immediate relatives wouldn't discuss sexual encounters, let alone perform them in front of each other."

"If they are related, they could have an us-versus-them mentality. Their bond will be unbreakable because its all they know." Fleur sighed.

"Most hunters put animals out of there misery." Gideon paced,"The men we're looking for, they don't show any mercy."

"These guys take pleasure in watching their casualties die a slow death." Morgan leaned against a tree.

"Every spring for the past five years, people have gone missing." Elijah sat on a desk,"We think these killers wait for their prey to migrate into the woods."

"Courtney Jacobs, Shane Everett and Alex Harrison were all healthy, smart adults who survived for days by following their instincts." Hotch added.

"They found themselves in the middle of nowhere. They were either approached in a way that wasn't threatening.." Reid started.

"Or the offenders waited for a moment of weakness, the perfect time for an attack." Fleur finished.

"These particular hunters are very seasoned, they're very efficient. It's no surprise that they've chosen a weapon to be a compound bow." Gideon shook his head,"It requires upmost precision and offers them a challenge every time."

"Like the trophy hunter, these men, they plan their killings with care. They decide the type of victims they want, how and where they want to kill them and with what weapon." Morgan nodded.

"Hunting is their sport. Humans are their targets." Emily sighed.

"Use every hunters instinct in your bodies. Good luck." Gideon sighed.

*********************************

"We're standing in the middle of three million acres. She could be anywhere. We've only got two murders, miles aoart." Lizzie sighed,"There's no pattern yet."

"Both sites are low-lying. They can be tracked from above." Morgan lifted up a map.

"Mayhe there are blinds built into the trees, or at least access to them." Fleur suggested.

"With good vantage points, they can see their prey for miles." Gideon sighed.

*********************************

"Do you keep records to document who buys hunting arrows?" Hotch asked the shopkeeper.

"After a week, we only keep receipts if they pay by credit card." The shopkeeper shrugged.

"You get a lot of repeat business up here, don't you?" Schaeffer nodded.

"Every year, people get their ammo and supplies here before heading up to the mountains." She hummed.

"Groups of men? Like fathers and sons?" Elijah raised a brow.

"Sure. Can I ask you, gentlemen, why is this a police matter?" She asked.

"We're looking for two men, possibly related. You might remember them because one always does all the talking and the other would become very uncomfortable if you spoke to him." Hotch explained.

"It'd be worse if that person was a female." Reid added.

"Well, there are these two brothers that have been coming here for years. They got some supplies here a few days ago. The younger ones so painfully shy, its almost sweet." She told them as she took out some papers,"Their uncle was a quiet man, he passed away a few years ago."

"Did you find a receipt?" Schaeffer asked.

"Well, they paid in cash." She sighed, looking at the sheet of paper.

"Let me take a look at that." Hotch held his hand out.

"I'm pretty sure their name's Mulford." She handed him the receipt,"I think their uncle's name was Joe."

"Thank you very much." Hotch nodded.

"I'll call Garcia." Elijah took out his phone and called her,"Garcia, I need everything you have on a man named Joseph Mulford."

"Okay, it says here that Joseph Mulford was convicted of multiple assault and batteries. He owned a service station but it changed hands when he passed away. He gave it to his nephews, Paul and John Mulford."

"I don't have to ask where its located, do I?" Elijah raised a brow.

"No, you don't. But since you did, gorgeous gray matter, I'll have you know that I'm pulling it up right now and the computer says... Whoa." Garcia blinked.

"What is it?" Elijah asked.

"That service station, it's located on Highway 2."

"Oh, let me guess, close to where our victims went missing." Elijah hummed.

"Bullseye." She nodded.

"Thank you, darling."

"I love it when you say that." Garcia hummed and hung up.

*********************************

"No animal did this." Lizzie sighed as they walked up the hill.

"That depends on your definition of animal." Fleur shook her head.

"Looks like someone shredded it with a knife." Morgan gestured to the destroyed tent,"All the supplies have been dumped, not eaten."

"They want to make sure if anyone found their way back here, everything would be worthless." Gideon walked over.

"Blood on the ground. Two spots, here and there." Morgan pointed.

"Hey guys, we've got blood over here, too." Emily called.

"Okay, if I'm standing right up there, this area is wide open and I've got a perfect shot of these victims. It would explain the blood on the ground." Morgan explained.

"What about over here?" Gideon asked.

"That's another clear shot." Emily nodded.

"So what do we think happened here?" Lizzie asked.

"Two pools of blood, I say two victims. It could be campers." Fleur shrugged.

"Well, the question is, where are they now?" Emily sighed as something dripped into her cheek,"What is that?"

Up ontop of the tree were two dead bodies, tied to the trees and were dangling from the top. After bringing the bodies down, Lizzie sighed as she looked at them.

"They've already got two victims in these woods, why attack this couple." Li,zie shook her head.

"Well, maybe they had to. Bobbi Baird's their target. If she ran toward voices, then she had to come through this camp." Gideon looked around.

"These people were in the wrong place at the wrong time." Lizzie crossed her arms,"They weren't supposed to die."

"No, they just got in the way." Fleur sighed.

"Hotch found Bobbi Baird's car at the Mulford's service station." Morgan told them.

"Hiding in plane sight." Emily shook her head.

"It's run by two brothers." Morgan added.

"You heard of the Mulfords?" Gideon turned to Lizzie.

"We go by first name basis around here. But tell me what they're driving and my people will find it." Lizzie nodded.

*********************************

Hotch, Reid and Elijah entered the Mulford's home. Reid opened a cupboard, finding drivers licenses stuck inside.

"Guys, look at this." He turned.

"First one expired in 1980." Reid looked at the others.

"The boys weren't even born yet." Schaeffer shook his head.

"The uncle must've started the killing and the boys continued the tradition." Hotch sighed.

"Garcia, tell me what you've got on those boys." Elijah took out his phone, putting it on speaker.

"Paul and John Mulford, 22 and 26, were both orphaned as toddlers." Garcia told them.

"Abandonment issues." Hotch nodded.

"State kept them together by finding their only living relative, their uncle. He raised his nephews completely off the grid. They never went to school." Garcia shook her head.

"No socialization other than patrons of the station." Reid sighed.

"He was drafted in 1968. He was only eighteen years old." JJ held up a sheet of paper.

"He was relived of his duty two years later. Reports of hallucinations and delusions." Garcia told her.

"The boys were raised with no social compass by the only relative they ever knew." Reid crossed his arms.

"A psychotic possessed with bizarre beliefs who taught them how to hunt and who to kill." Elijah sighed as he picked up a photograph,"Look at this. They've been hunting in these woods their whole lives."

*********************************

"Do you guys see that fire?" Fleur pointed, pointing through the trees,"It's right through those trees."

"There's a man laying next to him." Gideon nodded.

"Could just be a couple of campers." Emily suggested, everyone grabbing their guns.

"Lets be prepared if it isn't." Gideon nodded, as they all drew their weapons.

"FBI." Morgan announced as they walked forward.

"He's covered in blood." Emily shook her head.

"We've got to get him out of here." Gideon crouched down.

"I'll call for Evac." Lizzie walked to the side.

"Son, can you hear me? My name is Jason Gideon, we're with the FBI." He explained, "We're going to get you out of here, okay? Can you hear me? Are you here alone?"

The young man shakily pointed.

"Over there." Gideon pointed.

The girls and Morgan grabbed their guns, pointing them as they walked over to a lower area, a woman, bleeding out.

Morgan bent down, checking her pulse before he sighed,"She's gone."

"It's a woman. She's been shot by an arrow." Fleur walked back over to Gideon.

"There's a compound bow about twenty-five feet away from her body." Emily pointed.

"What?" Morgan asked, seeing Gideon think.

"All the other victims were shot in the chest area. This boy has wounds in his lower abdomen." Gideon pointed.

"You don't think he was shot with an arrow?" Morgan raised a brow.

"Looks like he was stabbed." Emily pointed.

"Son, are the men who did this to you still in these woods?" Gideon knelt beside him.

The boy winced, giving a small nod.

"We have a team of FBI Agents looking for them. It's alright, they've got permission to shoot if necessary." Gideon assured him.

"No! No! Please!" He cried.

"It's okay. It's okay. You are safe. You are safe here!" Gideon told him.

"Don't shoot him. He's all I have." Johnny shook his head.

"Is your brother out there?" Gideon asked.

"Mhm." He nodded.

"What's your name?"

"Johnny." Johnny answered.

"Johnny, you need to tell us where Paul is, before it's too late." Gideon sighed,"Just tell me where he is. Tell me where he is."

"Half a mile, due East." Johnny sighed.

"Let's go." Fleur nodded.

That's when the group heard screaming. Bobbi. So they ran towards the sound, looking for her. Fleur ran up, seeing Bobbi so she put her finger to her lips. Pointing her gun towards Paul as his back was turned.

"Paul Mulford, FBI! Put down the weapon!" Morgan yelled.

Paul raised his bow, pulling back the string. Morgan then shot, firing three bullets into Paul's chest. Paul fell to the ground, Blood coming out his mouth as his eyes closed.

Morgan ripped off Paul's vest,"He's clean."

*********************************

"Have you heard from the catsitter?" Fleur asked Elijah as they walked to the elevator.

"Both of my boys have been behaving." Elijah hummed.

"You need to send me a picture of them. I miss them." Fleur pointed.

"Trust me, I've got plenty." Elijah chuckled.

"Show me." Fleur nodded.

Elijah smiled and took out his phone, loading up a picture of Horatio and Muffin together,"They never sit this close together."

"Oh my goodness, they're so cute." Fleur smiled.

"I know." Elijah giggled,"I love them so much."

"I want to get a pet." Fleur sighed.

"Then get one."

"I don't have a lot of space."

"Cats don't take up a lot of soace." Elijah shrugged.

"If you see any cats, be on the look out then." Fleur hummed.

"Oh, I will." Elijah told her,"Any preferences?"

"Hm... I want a fluffy kitty." Fleur nodded.

"Ragdoll?"

"Ragdoll." Fleur pointed,"They're so soft."

"I'll see what I can do, darling." Elijah smiled.

"I love you, Elijah Deans." Fleur hummed.

"Oh, I know you do, Fleur Howards."
