Chapter 139 - Red Light
"Where's my mother?" Reid asked.
"I missed you." Cat hummed.
"What did you and Lindsey do to her? How did you-" Reid went to move closer.
"No, stop!" Cat pointed,"You don't get to walk in here and hiss at me like I'm a criminal. Now... We do things my way."
Cat then kicked out the chair across from her, Reid catching it and sitting down in front of her. Elijah stood nearby, watching the pair closely.
"Have a seat.. How's prison, did you like it?" She asked.
"No." Reid answered.
"Not fun, is it?" Cat raised a brow.
"Unlike you, I didn't deserve to be there." Reid stated.
"How did you stay sane?" Cat crossed her arms,"A brain like yours needs stimulation in such a..Gray place."
"I worked in the laundry room and I played chess." Reid stated.
"That's about, three, four hours tops. What about the other twenty?" Cat tilted her head.
"I read." He nodded.
"That's still not enough. You have to.. Go someplace, up here." Cat pointed to her head,"Or else you go crazy. Do you wanna see where I go? Come here I'll show you." She motioned for him to come forward.
Reid leaned forward, still silent and Cat reached out to touch his face.
"No touching." Elijah told her.
"Buzzkill." Cat rolled her eyes before smirking and gently closed Reid's eyelids,"Close your eyes. Good, now keep them shut.. Now when you open your eyes. I want you to look at me like I'm the first person you've seen after being in prison for three months. Now, open."
"Hello, Cat." Reid smiled at her as he opened his eyes.
Cat laughed and leaned back,"You're here! You're really here."
"There's nowhere else I would rather be." Reid told her.
"You're good at this." Cat crossed her arms,"So good at this. I almost believe you don't want to kill me."
"I don't want to kill you." Reid nodded.
"No?"
"No."
"What if I let your mother die? Then would you kill me?" She leaned forward and smirked,"Or would you just.. Hurt me? Would you pin me down and leave bruises that don't go away?"
"Is that what you want?" Reid asked, leaning forward.
"I guess I just want to know if you would. If you could." Cat hummed.
"No." He shook his head.
"No?"
"It's not the kind of man I am." Reid told her.
Cat narrowed her eyes and glanced at Elijah,"Do me a favour and tell curls over there to step aside.. Because we're gonna play another game. And this time, we're going to find out exactly what kind of man you are."
Reid looked back at Elijah and nodded, signaling him to leave. Begrudgingly, he did, glaring at Cat as he did so. All while she smirked, waving at him as he walked out.
"Finally some alone time without eyes." Cat hummed.
"Let's play." Reid sighed.
"Let's!" She smiled.
*********************************
"Up until now, Cat Adams has always worked solo. But this is a partnership. We need to figure out how these two hit women were able to work together, when one of them was in solitart." Emily looked around.
"And hit men are driven by profit and self preservation. They don't take a job unless they know all the angles." Luke pointed.
"So, to predict their behavior, we have to ask ourselves a simple question. We know why Cat wanted revenge on Reid. Why does Lindsey?" Tara asked.
"Ten years ago, Reid tried to talk Lindseys father out of one last murder. Cut to last year and she finds out her BFF, Cat has been arrested by the same federal agent who tried to stop her daddy." Rossi explained.
"So Lindsey's emotions trumped her professionalism. She could grab Reid's mother and kill her without a trace, but instead, she waltzed her into his prison because she wanted him and us to know that she was involvd." Luke pointed.
"Look, there's risky and there's reckless. It's kind of hard to buy that Lindsey would commit to doing all of this just because Reid kind of sort of got in her way ten years ago." Fleur shook her head,"We're missing something."
Emily's phone buzzed and she looked down at it, sighing,"Damn. Lindsey's APB didn't turn anything up. Neither did Diana's photo on the national centre for missing adults database."
"Lindsey's too good to get caught in those dragnets. She's probably already changed cars and appearance by now." Luke nodded.
"Okay, I want a full breakdown on Lindsey's life. Aliases, contacts, hits, uh, where she gets her hollow-point rounds." Emily told them.
"Yeah, Walker and I will take that." Tara nodded.
"Okay, then I want a list of everyone who was in Cat's prison in the past year. Cat was communicating with Lindsey through a maximum-security facility. Somewhere, there is a weak link in her chain." Emily pointed.
"We'll find it." Fleur assured her.
*********************************
Elijah sighed, looking at Cat through the window as he called Fleur. Three months pregnant... Cat was three months pregnant and supposedly, it was Reid's..
"Eli?" Fleur walked as she answered.
"Are things okay over there?" Elijah asked her.
"We're finding out as much as we can.. What about you?"
"Cat's pregnant." Elijah told her.
"..What?" Fleur blinked.
"I wish I could say she was lying to manipulate Reid but.. It's on the prison medical records." Elijah shook his head,"Three months along."
"..Who's the father?"
Elijah swallowed,"..Well, we don't know officially. But Cat says it's Reid... And the timelines match up."
"..No, he wouldn't do that." Fleur shook her head.
"Not.. Consensually." Elijah bit his cheek.
"He wasn't in the right mind." Fleur suggested.
"I don't- Emily need to know."
"Okay- I'll take the phone through." Fleur walked towards the Conference Room.
"Thank you." Elijah nodded.
Fleur walked through to the rest of them,"Elijah, you still there?"
"Yeah. Yeah, go ahead." He responded.
"So far we don't have any information on the prison employees. Somebody in there is helping her, but nobody jumps out as an obvious culprit and it doesn't help that they're blocking us at every turn." Luke sighed.
"We have something, but... It's out there." Tara told her
"I'll take out there." Emily nodded.
"The gun store owner was more of a libertarian than you would think. He talked about how he never judged his customers or who eh loved." Stephen began.
"That's.. Weird." Rossi blinked.
"Not as weird as when he mentioned Obergefell." Tara added.
"The Supreme Court decision that legalised gay marriage." Fleur looked up.
"You said we were missing something in the relationship between these two women. What's if it's this?" Stephen suggested.
"The risks that Lindseys taking, the bond she has with Cat, it's not professional. It's romantic." Tara explained.
"Well, this casts a big shadow over Lindsey's next move. By exposing her plan to us, she knows there's no happy ending, no future with Cat." Stephen crossed his arms.
"And she's going to take Reid's mother with her." JJ sighed,"And that's the ultimate act of revenge against the guy who took her lover away."
"Eli, what do you have?" Emily asked him.
"..Will you take me off speaker?" Elijah questioned.
Fleur nodded for Emily to follow her, walking to Emily's office where Elijah explained about the pregnancy.
"Are you kidding me?" Emily practically threw the phone down,"Are you kidding?"
"Well, here's where it gets tricky. Do we believe her or not?" Elijah asked,"On one hand, getting pregnant is a power control move straight out of the female psychopath handbook. On the other hsnd.."
"If her story is true, it meant she sent her lesbian lover down to Mexico to get Reid to.." Emily trailed off.
"..Yeah. Either way, she is pregnant. I just refuse to believe it belongs to Spence." Elijah shook his head.
"It could be the person inside the prison who's been helping her. Getting pregnant serves two purposes, gaslighted Reid and emotional blackmail against that employee." Emily pointed.
"Yeah, but, Emily, we don't know how that guy is yet. And Alvez and Rossi aren't going to in the time they have left." Elijah sighed.
"Eli, we gotta call you back." Fleur looked at her phone.
Elijah sighed, putting his phone away as he turned his attention back over to Reid and Cat.
"Let's pretend you're telling the truth. That means I guessed it, right? The secret, the one I don't want to admit to? It's my child?" Reid tilted his head.
"Is that your guess? You only get one, remember?" Cat leaned her head on the table.
Reid paused before shaking his head,"No, it's too easy."
"Believe me, getting pregnant with your baby was not easy." Cat rolled her eyes.
"You misunderstand, its too easy emotionally. Because I can take your child away from you. The child I had no part in creating, but a child I could take care of better than you." Reid told her, sitting down in front of her.
"That's rude." Cat scoffed.
"It's true. You can't be a mother, Cat. I'm not trying to insult you. It's your psychological makeup, you literally... Do not have the emotional skills to care for another human being. You'd lose interest in your own baby, the way a six year old loses interest in a pet hamster." Reid stated,"This baby is simply a means to an end, which is to keep me playing your game, guessing like a fool, assuming something i never should have assumed in the first place."
"And what would that be?" She tilted her head.
"..My mother's already dead." Reid swallowed,"She was dead before I walked in here."
"She's not dead." Cat shrugged.
"Yes, she is." Reid stood up.
"No! Because that would be cheating and I don't cheat. You cheat." Cat pointed.
"I'm done playing." Reid turned.
"Get back here." She warned.
"Goodbye, Cat." Reid reached for the door.
"I'll let you talk to her!" Cat banged her hand on the table.
Reid turned to look at Elijah, giving him a small nod before going back into the room.
Elijah nodded and quickly called Garcia,"Penny?"
"Yeah?"
"Get ready to trace a call on Spence's phone."
"Fired up, plugged in. Ready to go." Garcia typed.
Reid handed his phone to Cat, letting her dial in the number and holding it up as they listened to it ring... Before she answered.
"You're early." Lindsey spoke.
"Yeah, I know." Cat nodded.
"Did he guess?" She asked.
"No, not yet. We need proof of life." Cat rolled her eyes.
"Alright." Lindsey sighed,"Hold on."
Then... Diana's voice came over the phone,"Spencer!"
"Mom! Mom, are you okay?" Reid grabbed the phone.
"I don't... No-" Diana began... Before being cut off by an explosion.
"Mom?" Reid blinked.
"Gotta go." Lindsey hummed.
"Mom! What the hell was that?" Reid cursed, looking at Cat.
"I don't know." Cat shook her head as Elijah hurried in.
"Lindsey said you were early. Was that a signal? Was that a prearranged signal to kill my mother?!" Reid raised his voice.
"No." Cat answered.
"Tell me the truth!" He demanded.
"I am! You wanna know the truth? Your mom is an Alzheimer-ridden moron who's getting dumber day by day, and if she's dead, it's your fault." Cat snapped.
That was it. Reid just snapped. He jumped up, throwing the table and chair to the side as he pinned Cat to the wall, his hands tightly around her neck.. Strangling her.
"Spence!" Elijah yelled, trying to pull Reid off of her,"Spencer!"
"I'm going to kill you." Reid threatened, not letting go.
"Spence- She's pregnant! She's pregnant!" Elijah reminded him.
"I'm going to kill you." He cursed as Elijah managed to pull him off.
"Come on, baby. Come on." Elijah sighed as he held Reid back.
Cat coughed, rubbing her neck as she watched the two of them. Reid quickly rushed out of the room, going to the hallway and sat down on the floor, his head in his hands. Elijah soon walked over, just off the phone with the team.
"Richmond county police just reported a gas station explosion. One victim, a male. Whatever Lindsey did, we have to assume your mum's alive." Elijah told him, slowly taking a spot beside him,"Hey.."
Reid looked down,"I'm really scared that this is who I am now." He admitted.
"No. Don't say that." Elijah shook his head.
"Eli..Elijah, you don't know.." Не swallowed.
"I do know. I know two inmates, Frazier and Duerson, killed your friend Delgado in front of you. And I know they wanted you to.. Move their heroin, and I know that if you didn't, you would have been next, right?" Elijah tilted his head,"Spence, anyone in your spot would have done the same."
"You wouldn't have." Reid looked at Elijah.
"Yeah. Yeah, I would have, Spence. If someone was threatening my life, you bet your ass I would. It doesn't make you a bad person. 'Cause you know who does think like that? That- That in you doing what you had to do to survive somehow makes you a psychopath?" Elijah glared at the door,"She does. She does.. She does. Because she knows."
"That's the secret. What I don't want to admit about myself." Reid stood up.
"Hold on. Let's play this out, because she will not lose to you twice. She already said that this was not about you two being the same." Elijah stood up too, shaking his head.
"Then she's all about the game. She thinks that I cheated last time because I lied about her dad, so it's integral to her that she beats me by following the rules." Reid realised.
"Yeah, but, Spence, she controls the rules, and she will change them to ensure she wins." Elijah told him.
"Which means that I'm locked in." Reid nodded.
"Like she is." Elijah added.
"And she needs me locked in, playing by her rules, a game I can't win so she.. I got it." Reid looked at Elijah before he went back into the room with Cat.
"Guess that's one way to get you to put your hands on me." Cat shrugged.
"Dance with me." Reid told her.
"Why?" Cat looked up at him.
"Because I don't want the people watching us to hear what I'm going to say next." Reid admitted, holding his hand out to her.
Reid then pulled Cat to her feet, swaying with her close to his chest.. And Elijah had to act completely fine.
"You guys got this up?" Elijah asked over the phone.
"Streaming now." Garcis typed.
"Okay, listen, you're gonna hear a lot of weird stuff like.. Spence saying he is the father of Cat's baby. Don't let that distract you." Elijah told them.
"I'm sorry. Full stop, why would Reid say he's the father-" Garcia stopped.
"Shh." Fleur nudged her.
"You had eyes on me while I was in prison, didn't you?" Reid asked.
"Spencie, don't ruin the moment." Cat hummed as they swayed.
"I don't want to, but I'm on the clock. Answer my question, am I right?" Reid questioned.
Cat leaned her head on his chest,"Yes, you're right. I wanted to make sure things were just as uncomfortable for you as they were for me."
"That's what we missed, the inside man that's been helping them." Luke pointed.
"He didn't just work at Cat's prison, he worked at hers and Reid's." Rossi nodded.
"Garcia, look for any overlap." Emily instructed.
"Compiling now." Garcia typed,"Here's something, Lionel Wilkins. He worked at both Mount Pleasant and the Milburn Correctional Facility."
"Okay, look, this guy could have gotten her pregnant, but there's no way he could've got his hand on Reid's file." Tara shook her head.
"Not directly. He could have called in a favour from a friend at the Bureau." Fleur mentioned.
"So someone must've wanted to screw us this whole time." Luke realized.
"Someone who's not gonna work for the Bureau much longer." Emily scoffed.
"That's how you timed everything so perfectly. Like sending my mom and Lindsey to visit me when I thought.. I was at my lowest." Reid continued.
"Thought?" Cat tilted her head, wrapping her arms around his neck,"You sure you weren't?"
"No, I wasn't. Because I didn't feel bad. I felt scared.. At how much I enjoyed poisoning the other prisoners." Reid admitted,"I had a hundred ways of getting myself out of that situation, and I picked the one that would cause them the most pain."
"Well, look at that. You might end up saving your mother's life after all." Cat hummed.
"Okay, Lionel Wilson's primary residence is in Fall's Church, but I also have a second address. Uh, it's a cabin off the Rappahannock river." Garcia informed them.
"The cabin is in Lindsey's zone based on the gas station." Stephen pointed.
"Helos are forming on the roof. Let's go." Emily nodded.
*********************************
The Team had found Lindsey, they went into the Cabin where she had a detonator in her hands..Diana nowhere to be seen.
"I'm waiting for a phone call." Lindsey shrugged.
"So are we, Lindsey." Fleur nodded.
That's when a phone rang.. The two grabbed their phones and it was Emily's that had rang.
"Woah- Woah. Its okay, here it is." Emily held her phone up for Lindsey.
"If this is a trick, I will kill all of us." Lindsey warned.
"I swear to you, it's not a trick and you'll want to hear what the person on the other end of this line has to say." Emily nodded and answered it.
Then, Lindsey could hear Reid, she could see him and Cat swaying together.
"At first, I was furious, because the secret had to be the baby inside you. I mean, how could it be anything else? But then I realised that somehow..you knew I liked hurting those men. Now I know it's both things." Reid nodded.
"So which is it, Spence. Come on. Don't fumble it now that you're at the one-yard line." Cat hummed.
"You're not pregnant with my child. You got pregnant with Wilkins to put me in as compromised a position as possible. But it should be mine. I wish it were mine. Because you and I..We deserve each other. That is the real secret." Reid told her.
Then, they watched as Cat took out her phone and Lindsey's began to ring. When she answered, there was Cat.
"Kill her." Cat ordered,"Lindsey, I said-"
"You bitch.. You're pregnant?" Lindsey teared up.
"Lindsey, sweetheart. It's complicated, okay?" Cat sighed.
"No, it's not." Emily shook her head.
"Playing a game with Reid was more important than being faithful to you. And if you do this, she wins. Don't let her win." Fleur told her.
Lindsey sighed, hesitating before she put the detonator down and hung up the phone. Luke hurried forward, cuffing Lindsey and leading her out of the cabin.
"We're clear." Elijah told Reid as he walked in.
Reid took the phone from Cat and began walking to his husband,"Is my mom okay?"
"Yeah. She's.. She's fine." Elijah nodded.
"We do deserve each other, by the way, you guessed right." Cat hummed.
"You lied, by the way. You were going to kill my mother regardless." Reid shook his head.
"Yeah, I think you really liked hurting those men. And once you cross that line.. You can't ever go back." Cat pointed.
Reid knelt beside Cat, grabbing her wrist and looking into her eyes,"Watch me."
Cat bit her cheek and looked at the two of them as they left the room, leaning back in the chair.
"Let's go see your mum, yeah?" Elijah took his hand.
"Yeah." Reid smiled.
*********************************
Elijah and Reid soon arrived back at the headquarters, taking the lift up. They were stood together, hand in hand, as they headed to see the rest of the team.. And Diana.
Diana looked at the two of them before Emily leaned over and whispered,"Spencer's here."
It took Diana a second before she teared up and hugged Reid.
"Hi, mom." Reid smiled.
"Oh Spencer.." Diana hummed,"Don't leave me..Ever again." She looked over at Elijah before hugging him too.
"We won't." Elijah assured her as he hugged back.
Everyone left the three of them to have a moment, Fleur going to Morgans old office. She usually always did it after a case, just to spend time alone. But there, waiting for her, was Morgan.
"Hey, babygirl." He hummed.
"Derek?" Fleur chuckled, walking over to him and hugged him.
"Like the surprise?" Morgan asked.
"After what just happened? Yeah." Fleur sighed as she pulled away,"Wait- The kids."
"Are still with your moms." Morgan assured her,"I wouldn't leave them alone."
"Oh, I love you." Fleur leaned up and kissed him.
"I love you too, sweetheart." Morgan smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"Wait- So why are you here?" Fleur tilted her head,"Not that I'm complaining."
"To see you all, see Reid.. But there's also this text I got from Garcia." Morgan told her,"Something about it just.. Didn't feel right."
"Penny texted you?" Fleur looked at him.
"Yeah, she said Reid was out of prisom and he did want to see me. And he was staying in an FBI safe house where he was putting his mother up for the night." Morgan explained.
Fleur blinked,"No, that's not right." She took his phone and looked at the text as some of the others walked in.
"Derek." Emily looked between them,"What are you doing here?"
"Well Flo's been keeping me up to date with everything that's been going on. And I got a text from Garcia." Morgan nodded to Fleur who had his phone.
"I didn't approve that." Emily furrowed her brow as she looked at the phone.
"You don't call, you don't write. I have to hear stories about you from your Mrs." Rossi chuckled.
"Rossi." Morgan laughed and pulled him in for a hug.
"You don't give us a heads up and you decide to pop in at three in the morning?" JJ hummed.
"Oh, Blondie. Come here, come here." Morgan held his arms out.
"Hi." JJ smiled.
"It is so good to see all of you. Look, I wish I could say I was just here to talk but.. We may have bigger problems." Morgan looked to Emily,"You see what I'm saying about that text? It does not sound like Garcia. You do know what it does sound like?"
"A trap." Emily admitted.
*********************************
"I know we're all tired but we may have a new lead on Mr Scratch." Emily told them.
"Somebody did a bang up of cloning my cell phone to send Morgan a fake text luring him to a non existent safe house. And whoever that somebody is has mad skills." Garcia sighed.
"The kind of skills Scratch has." Stephen nodded.
"Were you able to trace where the hack came from?" Luke asked.
"Do you.. Do you see what I have to out up with?" Garcia pointed, looking back at Morgan.
"Alvez, you'll always get a location with this one." Morgan chuckled,"You guys are all good to go."
"Obviously Morgan can't come with us. He's a civilian now." Emily shook her head.
"We'll miss you out there." Fleur hummed.
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it out there in the field with you guys, I think about it every day. But between my old friends and my new friends, you guys are gonna go out there, you're gonna handle your business, you're gonna make people feel safe and then you're gonna come home. And that's all that matters." Morgan pointed.
"Hey, walk me back to my lair." Garcia nudged him.
Morgan nodded, walking off with Garcia as Emily turned to the others.
"Let's saddle up." Emily nodded.
The teams were soon en route to Scratch's location, in two different SUVs. Everyone on comms.
"Okay Voltron, sound off." Garcia hummed.
"Have we dispatched units to the location Scratch tried to lure us to?" Emily asked.
"I coordinated it before we left. They're on their way." Fleur explained.
"SWAT will meet us on site at Scratch's house." Luke added.
"I know we all want this son of a bitch's head on a platter, but SWAT has to clear every single room before we step foot inside." Emily reminded them.
"Have they been briefed? This guys traps have traps." Elijah sighed.
"The house itself could be a setup." Rossi suggested.
"Or a wasre of our time so he can get away." Stephen added.
"Whatever it is, he's gonna try to take us by suprise. We have to be ready for anything." Emily told them.
Just then, as they were driving along, something caught the tires of both SUVs, causing them to spin out. Thankfully, they didn't crash into one another.
"Everyone okay?" Emily cursed.
"Yeah- Yeah, we're good." JJ nodded.
That's when.. A truck came out of nowhere and crashed into both SUVs... Then darkness.
